Suffolks were bred to work the heavy, clay soils of East Anglia (Suffolk and neighbouring counties), so they are clean-legged, lacking the feathers of other heavy breeds, so it didn't take so long to clean them after work.

LOL I just posted that in response to another person's comment before reading yours. I love that channel. I wish Jim would acquire a couple of Suffolk mares too and breed them, but I don't think he wants to get back into the breeding business. Suffolks are my favorite draft breed.

The Kentucky Horse Park in Lexington featured one in their Draft Breeds barn that people could pet and get their pictures made with. I think there's a UA-cam video out there of the staff talking about their draft Breeds to the park visitors.

Honestly I love Suffolk Punches for their natural beauty, characteristics, personality wise and joyful riding. This is exactly why I prefer riding Heavy horses rather than the light/regular horses as they're such Joyful but dearing companions I have ever seen.
Honestly I have never ridden a Suffolk punch, seen some from Cotsworld but it's one of my dream horse breeds to ride as they're so rare to find in the UK as they're such beautiful horses to set your eyes towards them for their strength, hardworking effort, muscle contraction, deep composure, deep diposition, rhythm balance, great personality and fantastic body structure. (It would be a dream come true to own one or two sometime)
Love this breed so much as this was a great video of you riding Nemo as I adore these majestic but beautiful gentle giants! (Very Horsome) 🐎❤

It is great that more and more popularity of the big breed horses is happening. I have always had Quarter horses or Morgans. I am not very tall and the Morgans suit me well and I look for the smaller quarter horses for the same reason. I get better prices when I find small Quarter horses as most are looking for barrel racers or some other talent of the Quarter horses and so breeders are happy to sell the smaller stock at a substantially reduced price. I have only ridden a big breed a few times. A friend had a big breed back when I was a teenager. Not sure what breed it was, and I think it was a mix of two large breeds. It was awesome and riding it I felt like I was traveling in a luxurious vehicle not feeling any rough terrain. Amazing horses with friendly personalities most of the time. Big gentle giants.

I LOVE that there was a tiny bit of education in this video about breeding when discussing rare breeds. Too often rare horses are glamourised, and as a result people buy them but do not breed. Ask yourself before you buy a rare horse, if it is ethical to own a rare species without breeding it. Many rare breed horses are the genetic equivalent of a polar bear. Many rare breeds are facing what is called an "extinction vortex", where fewer breeders results in fewer horses, which results in loss of genetics, then inbreeding, which results in lower fertility, poorer health, and poorer quality of life for the animals. The costs of breeding horses, (veterinary bills, land, feed, and time/attention make it difficult for breeders to maintain businesses over generations). Unfortunately, most horse owners (myself included) are not equipped for stallions, so the majority of the male horses are gelded. This is fine for a common breed, but with a rare breed it vastly bottlenecks the genetics. This castration problem is a unique challenge for rare large animals (keeping a tom cat or dog that is not neutered is far more accessible to us). Some European countries are doing an excellent job establishing stud farms and semen banks for their rare horses to counteract this castration problem, but it is not yet commonplace. The only way to protect these breeds is by promoting breeding owners, and breed societies that empbrace and promote science-based progressive conservation methods to limit inbreeding. The absolute most important item is protecting their genetic diversity and preventing inbreeding, and this can only be accomplished through increasing numbers, and careful record keeping. For more information look to the RBST (Rare Breeds Survival Trust), The Livestock Conservancy, and the Equis Survival Trust. Horses do not exist only for our consumption and pleasure. They are endangered animals that need our help, but are not protected the way wild animals are because they are considered livestock. This is a giant gap, that we must bridge to ensure our children and grandchildren also have these incredible animals to love.

Here is a little thing I found on Allison's Book Bag blog about her and the illustrator Wesley Dennis: Henry suggested to Dennis that it ought to include the English-bred Suffolk Punch. She reports that he got a faraway look and worked in a fever. When he finished the painting, Dennis brought it to the Rand McNally himself. After a long silence, the editor declared that he wanted to hang the painting over his desk where he could see it every day.

There are Suffolk breeders in the US, and the population here is larger than in the UK. The US has their own registry. Many of them are used for logging because it's more ecological to the forests to use horses rather than machinery. A family in upstate New York farms and logs with horses and has their own UA-cam channel called Working Horses with Jim. He has a pair of Belgians and a pair of Percherons, and last year bought two Suffolk colts that he plans to train in the future. This year he acquired a three-year old Suffolk stallion that was breeding mares at another farm. This horse is a full brother to one of his younger colts. Jim plans to keep him a stallion. He doesn't feature the Suffolks all the time in his videos because he's busy working with the others, but he has done videos about them and sometimes shows the Suffolks. I love this breed.

Envy, as followed this amazing place for a while now. I owned a Shire x Welsh Cob, who was chestnut and looked like a suffolk. It looks great fun to gallop on the beaches on one of these magnificent heavies.

I have Breton draft horses, and Suffolk horses are an ancien part of breton breed. My dream since childhood is to have one of them one day. Thank you for this video, it melt my heart. (And sorry for my english...)

Well I have to admit that after watching several of your videos with draft horses, it is now my quest to ride at least one draft breed. I only hope my little quarter horse doesn't get jealous if he sees me on top of a horse that's twice his size! 😅

Yay!😁 That is wonderful. You'll have to let me know what you think when you ride one! Hahaha, well my little Icelandic seems to put up with it, so I think your QH will be okay as long as you bribe him with a few carrots. 😉

If you ever find yourself back in the lake district/Cumbria, you have to check out The Friesian Experience with Tracey Alexander (I know you already did a Friesian horse visit).. She runs a Friesian sanctuary and has many fabulous programs you can do with her horses!
