  • You've seen them riding, now here's rare heavy horse breed half-brothers Rocket and Ryan out on the county lanes driving.
They were an interesting pair to train to say the least! In this video Barry explains what they were like at the beginning of their training, what we have been doing with them so far, what issues we have come across and what methods and equipment we have put in place to help solve them.

I have watched many trainers of horses and I think you are the best. Kindness and slow progress is the best way to develop a horse with a heart to do his work and to please his trainer. So many trainers are rough handlers and that makes a horse (or any animal) not trusting of the humans. You have the heart and spirit to give these horses their best start on their journey and they are so fortunate that their humans invest in training of your caliber. ❤️

So glad you said that about a good horse being a good horse no matter what height, Barry.

I knew someone with a Highland Pony, she made it to 15 hands at the age of 4 year's, everyone said she's too big to enter any shows, just because she was too big for a highland breed, but she was an amazing mare, such a strong good work horse. But me and the owner can I enter her in shows still.

Standing still, quietly, is a skill that a lot of horses of any discipline are never taught. It should be.

Over a century ago, Suffolk punches used to be 16.2hh but now they are bred bigger, our family had a 19hh Suffolk stallion

Yeah, I remember reading in one of the horse breed books that a Suffolk punch held the record for having the largest girth. The book was probably published in the 1980s.

The way that I secure the bridle on my draft horses is by running the throat latch through the ring on their halter. I leave halters on under the bridle so that I can safely tie them up when working. A friend uses a bit of string to tie the part of the bridle and the part of the halter that goes over the horses pole together. I have also seen bridles that incorporate a halter type of feature so that you can tie up the horse without using the bit. I think they are based on bridles from endurance riding that were then adapted to driving. The head rubbing when resting is very annoying. I try to discourage it by making them go back to work. This works with the horses that want more rest time but not with the fidgety horse that would prefer to move even when very tired. I never seem to be be able to verbally correct the head rubbing without generating confusion in the horse about what I am correcting (they try to move off then then get frustrated about being stopped). Great video, nice to see you working the Suffolks!

Their owner is abroad a lot for work, so for now they're just driving single and as a pair at home.

No, we always where 'buffs' when it's winter. It's because it's generally close to or below zero degrees Celsius standing still and when you're going along on the carriages in the wind it can get down to a 'real feel' of minus 15, which although is tame for some countries is very cold for us here in the UK. We always wrap up warm for heading out in the cold. It's a long time to be chilly when you're out all day.

@barryhook2 yeah it gets freezing 🥶 cold in the UK, expecially if you live close to the shore, and standing still and not moving in any form of way. I know that feeling when outside for hours.
