    I have the suprim which I run with 3 connectors as I don't feel there is any need to overclock since performance gains are about 3% max while using a large increase in power. Mine runs the same as any other card at stock. Each power connector is capable of 250W so you are well within the safety limits.

      Aha! Good to know. When I was testing out both Suprim models, I hadn't considering running it with 3 or 4 8pin connectors. I assumed it wouldn't work at all. It wasn't until someone mentioned that it was possible in my comments and had to test it out. Thanks for the info!

    I'm glad I bought this card I had originally ordered the ASUS TUF card, the 3 week shipping arrival date gave me some time to research a bit more. Ended up grabbing a 4090 Gaming trio instead at $1650 still a bit too much but saved me $250. I did want to spend a bit more just for the look of the Suprim but I'm glad I didn't as this card I have has given me 0 problems and no coil whine especially not enough for anyone to point it out.

    Hi John. In Canada I'm seeing cheaper prices in the Gigabyte gaming OC across the board on all 40 series cards. I've been hearing some concerns about the Gigabyte cards not traditionally being dependable and that many die. Do you concur with this? I've never owned a Gigabyte, always going with MSI or Asus but I also don't like coil whine. I'll be pairing my card with an I9 13900k, Asus Z790e and 32g DDR5. We are starting to see deals in Canada so I'm trying to make a decision so I can jump on one. Also any word on the 4080ti ? Thanks.

    • @JohnLCharette

      Hey John! Solid name ;) I'm in Canada as well. Just north of the GTA. And yes, you are absolutely correct. I was not a fan of the 3000 series Gigabyte Gaming OC cards, similar to the Zotac's and MSI Gaming X Trio cards. They were all horrible. That being said, I've only heard good things about the 4000 series (minus all the coil whine). I personally haven't tested the Gigabyte Gaming OC, but I have heard good things about it.
      It sounds like you're building a killer system very similar to what I'm using (except I'm still on Z690). If you can get a deal on a Gigabyte Gaming OC, it's great. Not a lot of RGB on it, but if you're looking for a workhorse card, it'll do the job.
      As for the 4080 Ti's, no word from NVIDIA yet. The next card coming out is the 4070. After that, we'll see either 4060/4060 Ti and/or 4080 Ti. There's also talk of a 4090 Ti. Not sure when they'll come out though. Are you looking to buy a GPU within the next month?

      @@JohnLCharette Thanks for the reply. No I don’t have to buy in the next month, I can wait. It’s the last piece of the puzzle for me but my 2080ti is still holding up well for 2k gaming. In fact the only reason I’m really considering the 4090 is due to my flight sim gaming. The 4090 is going to be overkill for most everything else unless UE5 games start really pushing things or I really want to crank up that ray tracing. I even considered the 4070ti as I’ve seen Gigabyte gaming OC cards as low as 999 Canadian at Canada Computers. (You have to check their prices every day). I just saw a string of videos from people like JayzTwoCents slamming Gigabyte so I’ve held off.

    • @JohnLCharette

      Oh no! I walked into BestBuy and told them the card was defective. That it makes a loud noise when using it. I didn't use any fancy terms like 'coil whine'. I was outside of the return window, but my shipping took forever so they took it back. If the store retailer doesn't accept it back, you might be able to submit to MSI for an RMA.

    Just picked up a Gaming X Trio yesterday for my new build. It does have coil whine, but the only way I can hear it is to remove the side panel and put my ear to it. Since my PC is hooked up to my LG C1 the case sits far enough away that I can't hear it at all from any regular seating positions. My PSU is an MSI A1000G with a dedicated 16 pin. I played a few games last night and it was rock solid with a minor OC. Great video!

  • @salamand3r-
    @salamand3r- Рік тому +1

    Trio X owner here. Also noticed the coil whine. Since most Microcenters seem to have a lot of this and the TUF model in Open Box form, that helps indicate it might be systemic for those cards.
    All that said, it doesn't bug me much personally. My R9 290s were far worse back in the day, and as a now over-the-hill human, my hearing has naturally degraded to the point where the whine falls in large part outside of my audible range.
    Whether or not anyone else cares about coil whine will vary, but what doesn't vary much is the performance.

    Thanks for the video! I just finished my set up with the gaming x trio 4090 and I found one weird thing is that there was no protective film on the card while I unboxing it. I thought I probably got an used one, but this video showed it clearly.

      Lucky you about the coil whine. It's so hit and miss. Yeah, that's weird about the protective film. With most GPUs, as long as they haven't been beat up for years mining crypto, they are usually rock solid.. even if they've been used a bit. I wouldn't be too worried, especially if it's working well without coil whine.

    I have the same card. I am very satisfied temperature 60-68C. I have a poorly ventilated room. But almost no coil whine! Mostly when playing max, I can hear the whisper of the fans in the case when I turn off the sound of the game. OC is also fine, but 2000MHz is somewhat standard for memories. Unfortunately, don't expect any significant change in games.

      Greetings Rafael! Thank you so much. That's very exciting about getting this card today. Yes, it is possible to reduce coil whine by undervolting. I haven't done it much myself, but the theory is that coil whine is current travelling through the inductors. If you reduce the amount of current, it can reduce the whine. I've heard many people undervolting their 4090s and saving lots on electricity costs while maintaining 90-95% of the performance. Let me know how it goes and if you card experiences much coil whine.

    John, I took back my Asus Tuf 4080, and bought the MSI Gaming Trio non X 4090 variant based off your review, and there is literally 0 coil whine. Very happy with it. Only thing I don't like - 480w power limit. Never understood MSI limiting their cards like that, when the build quality can certainly handle it.

      @JohnLCharette  Рік тому +3

      Awww, that's amazing to hear. So glad one of my videos helped out. That's why I'm making this content. 4000 series Gaming X Trio is far superior to the TUF line - at least in my opinion. #sorryasus
      Yeah, not sure why MSI is limiting their power draw. I mean, their 4090 Gaming X Trio does the same thing @ 480w, which leads me to believe it's related to the 3x8pin power adapter they send with the card vs their Suprim limits it @ 520w, but requires 4x8pin connectors. Still, 520w isn't anywhere near the 600w that the 4090 FE can do. That being said, according to my tests.. the additional power doesn't really do much for performance. MSI may realize that and just cap it.

      @@JohnLCharette Your videos on the 40 series really did help me make my decision! I hope your channel grows even more man. I agreed with you that the gaming x also looks better than the suprim. I actually bought the suprim and didn't even make it home - immediately drove back to microceter and returned it because of guilt and buyers remorse. Overpaid for a card with the exact same PCB as the gaming x, just a higher/stronger power phases and capacitors at 70a compared to the gaming x at 50a. Which is STILL overkill. Not sure if I touched on that last comment but just reiterating anyways lol.
      And exactly what you said, the gains are minimal past 450 watts tbh, and the Most I've seen a 4090 consistently draw OC'd consistently was like 530w or something, which is absolute ludicrous. Absolutely no reason for that! Some people just aren't happy with the best. Even De8auer said the 600w power target on the 4090 makes NO sense, and I had thought the same thing. Nvidia locked the chips down so much anyways, I see all these guys shunt modding and all that and it's like why?? For a potential 10% increase? Go overclock your DDR5 and try for 8200mhz or something yaknow? So far for the most part I've ran it stock - I overclocked for a few hours with the slider set to 106% Max and I got plus 1900mhz on the memory clock stable and 2.9 ghz on the core. Marginal gains. Like plus 8-13 fps in warzone. So today I'm going to be undervolting and limiting the power - while increasing the memory clock say around plus 1000. I found plus 800 to be the sweet spot on the asus tuf 4070ti I originally had. And I found sweet spots on the 4080 and those gave me better gains then maxing out. I found with personal experience with both the 40 series AND ddr5 it's more about the sweet spot instead or maxing out, have you had the same experience? I'm actually running a msi a1000g pcie5 psu with the native 12vhpwr, but with the tuf 4080, the window wouldn't close in my lancool II case, so I removed the ridiculously tight cable sleeve and heat shrink wrap from the cable and much more flexible! I hate those all cable sleeve wraps anyways, they make cable management impossible lol, or ugly!
      Seems msi probably saw the power target for 600w was ridiculous and obviously saw it wasn't a necessity
      But either way historically they've power limited their cards
      With the 4090 it might have actually been a smarter move. Like I said the tuf was my original favorite in the 40 series, but they all had AWFUL coil whine, and while it matched my build a bit better, I have a new favorite, and I'm very happy
      Thanks for your help friend. #sorryasus

      I'm very similar with my cards and rarely overclock them. I only do it in my reviews because people ask for it. And yeah, it really seems to depend on the card.. but for me a 5-8% increase isn't worth it. I'd rather just run it stock.
      That's a beauty power supply you're running. I still haven't purchased a newer PSU with it's own dedicated 12v yet. I've purchased a couple 12v cables, but the PCIe5 PSU are still pretty pricey. My next one ;)
      I loved the 3000 series TUF cards. No frills, but some of the best VRAM on the market. I was very disappointed with the coil while with the 4090 TUF I picked up.
      Appreciate the conversation! Better than some of these one word comments or nothing at all :)

      @@JohnLCharette Well you gotta do it for the reviews lol 😂 I had to OC myself just to see how far the clocks would go!
      And I appreciate that! I was skeptical about it at first, previously I had an Asus ROG Thor 850w Platinum PSU that had already came with cable mod cables and you already probably know that it comes with an OLED that tells you how much power you are drawing from the wall. I loved that PSU but for 10 dollars more I was able to get ATX 3.0 with the native cable, I highly recommend! In my experience the psu plays a role in coil whine as well, but I'm not sure ours are so different, considering they are both made by channel well technology as the OEM. Corsairs cable seems to be more than capable! The size of the MSI would surprise you, its so tiny for a 1000 watt! But it definitely is 1000 watts lol.
      The 3000 Tuf series were my absolute favorite cards at the time, but I could never get my hands on them, and the prices seemed to always be premium compared to other cards.. :( Seems it's just a capacitor issue with the new 40 series.. the 4070ti and 4080 both were LOUD from what I experienced and now your experience with the 4090.
      And I agree! Thanks for the knowledge! Have a good one, I'll be watching.

      Great question! It changes which VBIOS is used on the card. You need to switch it with your computer off, then boot up with the new VBIOS. Every manufacturer is a bit different with how they configure their VBIOS'. In this case, it sounds like it doesn't affect the performance (clock speeds) at all, but only adjusts the fan curves so that the fans don't spin as fast, making it more silent.
      Another huge bonus is the ability to flash the VBIOS. You could, in theory, flash it with a Surpim VBIOS and attempt to get similar performance. By having the switch, if you flash it wrong or mess something up. You can always fall back on the old VBIOS.

    FYI starting at the 30 series cards, the VRAM is ECC memory, so you can push it as far as the slider will go, but you wont get any more performance and in some cases less because the ECC correction is stopping it from freaking out like previous cards. So you would need to nudge the VRAM speed up until it stops gaining performance to really see what it should OC to. In short, its not going to crash or show artifacts because the VRAM is ECC memory.

    Coil whine is the real issue of this 4090 gen, whichever the brand is. Manufacturers should invest in better components rather than adding leds and marketing bullshit. The card you showed has an horrible coil whine. I sent back my TUF for that reason but it was more like a buzzing, this squealing noise is even worst. I hope my Strix in replacement will have less issue on that end.

    • @JohnLCharette
      @JohnLCharette  Рік тому +1

      Yeah, I agree with you. I was even using that 4080 Eagle OC recently and it had a minor buzz. Nothing as bad as this MSI 4090 Gaming X Trio though. That being said, the TUF 4090 was almost as bad as this. I would also hope that the Strix has none as well. The 4080 Strix I tested was rock solid without any coil whine. Let me know when you get it and test it out.

    • @Bluemanta69
      @Bluemanta69 Рік тому +1

      I should get my Strix OC by the end of next week at the latest. I will let you know whether it’s similar, hopefully better, or even worst than the TUF OC (which I loved except that bad coil whine).

    • @Bluemanta69
      @Bluemanta69 Рік тому +1

      I've received my Strix OC today and no miracle happened unfortunately, it's pretty the exact same coil whine as the TUF OC. Maybe it's slighlty less noisy but I'm not even sure that I could differentiate them if I did a blind test. That's disappoiting but at least I got the Strix OC for the price of the TUF OC. I also expect to get an additional gesture from my merchant but at the end of the day, I'll have to live with a non-silent GPU. In some game, there is no coil whine at all but in others (like FS2020), there is a constant buzz sound. I read on Reddit that some guy tested not less than 7x 4090 in a row (different brands, different models, with different PSUs), he never managed to put his hands on a silent one... At this level, it's not even a lucky draw, it's like winning the lottery when you get one with no coil whine at all! Anyway, I'll stick with this one.

    • @JohnLCharette
      @JohnLCharette  Рік тому +1

      Oh wow, thank you so much for the update. I feel like I was experiencing the same inconsistency of coil whine with the 4080 Eagle OC. That's amazing that you were able to get a Strix for the price of a TUF. Sounds like even though you have a bit of noise, it's not too bad. Enjoy it, it's a beautiful card.

    • @Bluemanta69
      @Bluemanta69 Рік тому +1

      @@JohnLCharette With the current shortage of 4090, I couldn't reasonably ask my vendor to change it again for a 3rd card without being sure at all that it would solve the coil whine issue. They accepted to upgrade me from TUF OC to Strix OC because I ordered a 6K$ PC, they wouldn't have done it if I only bought the sole GPU. ;) I managed to grab a 75€ voucher in addition, I think I negotiated the problem not too bad given they are not even compelled to exchange graphic cards for coil whine issues normally. I will learn to accommodate with some noise annoyances from time to time. :)

      #soundpolice - haha. I was trying to explain to my wife what it means by the mic is clipping. She asked 'does that mean the sound is cutting out?!', I said no. It means that there's too much noise going into the mic and it can't capture the whole wave length, therefor some audio is being cut off. I hope I am right. That being said, I don't really know how to fix it. Is my mic too close to my mouth? Or is it just a crappy mic? As I mentioned myself, not an audio guy ;)

I've done it that way in the past before but it's a pain. I'd rather just plug in my microphone and record ;)
