this is ridiculous. Just imagine the size of the 5090. At this point, engineers over at Nvidia are going to have to find a way to get more performance out of a smaller GPU, as GPUs literally cant get any larger.

They can and have. The actual GPU of the 4090 is smaller than the 3090, 3080 and the 2080. The card itself is huge because of cooling requirements, not for processing power

My 1070 is splitting the scene just like day 1 still
...and nVidia must've really hated it. The whole 20 series after it seemed a bit...ehh? with the 1080ti still around. A barely cut Titan with higher clocks, and often faster than the big sister? Just crazy. It was an overzealous answer to the Vega threat, which didn't turn out to be much of anything after all. But that move left us with this beautiful beast of a card. I don't think they'll repeat that brilliant "mistake" anytime soon, they don't like their customers that much. Or at all, really. It really is a shame. The 1080ti was one for the ages, easily on the same page as Radeon 9700/9800, 8800 GTX or the Voodoo 2 for me.
I just started buying parts for my newly bluprinted rig and I'm putting an Asus 1080ti 11GB OC into. Went for the highest performance model. Still solid
The RTX 5090 will be used as a PC case. There is going to be enough space inside to install mother board, and all the components. :D

This is pretty wild. Going bigger and bigger kind of just leads me to believe that Nvidia isn't dropping all that much better of cards or making jumps like they did with the initial 10 series introducing the Pascal architecture.

They're probably hitting performance envelop limit within the power so no longer seeing huge jumps at the same wattage so as you said they have no choice but to dump more power.
They are stucked at some point with today silicon chips and also 32bit apps are a massive brake. If we want more effective HW, we have to bury entire PC standard and bring something new, something more similar to ARM or mobile Apple CPUs and also switch to carbon chips is needed. But that would mean 0 compatibility with older software and games.
ARM isn't innovating since it as well uses 32bit/ 64bit , ARM mainly uses 32bit. The ARM are however smaller and uses less energy and reached 2 nanometer scale.

Wow! That's really a smart design choice for the 4090. It's a 3-in-1 device; a GPU, a personal space heater in the winter, and a window exhaust fan for the summer!
Right now nighttime, 23c outside and while I'm typing this it's 27c inside. Haven't played anything all day yet. Cpu is at 34c, guess from watching youtube.

I am have the feeling that some of these cards will just break. They only hold on the PCIe and 2 slots. I often had the feeling that my 2080ti doesn't hold that well and my 2080ti is tiny in comparison.
This is why I'm actually looking forward to 2 slot hybrid cooler cards. I usually think they're expensive for more potential problems. But man, open air cooling like this is just ridiculous with these high tdp cards.

that actually brings up a rather cool point, what if we could do things like swap the ram on a card? or even coolers (without it being janky)? Being able to buy a chip from nvidia and put it into a card made by an aib would be pointless, but cool imo. You could customize a gpu like the rest of the system.

Before we know it, we'll need a completely separate case to house the GPU and its cooling system. Future market: GPU Cases! 😅 Side note: anyone know why Asus opted to go with the 2-slot brackets? Looks like everyone else went w the 3-ish slots. That's especially weird considering the ROG STRIX looks to have the biggest cooler of the AIBs. That thing's a beast!

A wobbly 600-watt POWER DELIVERY connector. This is where you can skimp on build quality, right Nvidia ? Probably the first card I wouldn't put into my system even if I got it for free.

1) Screws but two slot,
2) No screws, but 3 slot

If it is meant to be waterblocked then it is a waste to sell a gigantic cooler with it. Also water blocks are expensive enough that they can include their own custom bracket (like the EK 4090 founders one)

Based on this, the rtx5090 will have a novel convector heater form factor with a motherboard slot. You would plug it directly into the wall and it would power all the other peripherals like the CPU :D

See I think by 6090, if they don't rethink what they are doing, it'll be mid tower size and a panel will open up for you to snap the motherboard, cpu, ram and power supply in.. case manufacturers riot in the streets.

I will never get tired of saying I sold my 2070 super to buy a 3080 FE with money left over. I also saw that the 12g 4080 is performing only 18% more than the 3080 without DLSS 3, so I am happy for now.
@@flexplodin I didn't quite do that well but a little over a year ago got a 3080ti at MSRP. Threw my 1080ti up on Ebay and it went for $900 😳. Lol a card that I'd been using for nearly 3 years just about paid for my upgrade.

I got an extra large full tower case a couple years back with the intention of eventually doing a custom water cooling loop in it. Little did I know that I could need the space for an air cooling build.
When I built a PC last year I accidentally ordered a case one size bigger than I wanted. Had no idea I'd need it for my next upgrade.

My biggest fear with these cards is that if that stupid trend keeps up there is no way current cases are gonna be able to withstand their weight. Sooner or later something's gonna juggle a bit too much or tear down and they'll take the whole rig with them :/

There are supports nowadays that help support the weight of the floating corner.
To be fair. Current cases are outdated since 10 years. The GPU is the hottest part of a pc. But we still use the same cases which where used when CPUs where the hottest part. Instead the air flow should be directed completely on to the GPU nowadays. It's about time to change this.
Well this is for the 4090 so far and clearly there are smaller versions of it. Normall i think ppl will go for the cheapest version then water cool it so it will not be an issue. If you dont want water cool and still want good temp then yeah its quite suck
@@sofieberger8851 I've always been a firm believer of horizontal rigs. and even more now. Not only it would really relieve the stress on the motherboard, having all fans blowing all heat straight-up would improve management a whole lot instead of what we have now. And since nowadays screens are paper-thin, you could very well use "the tower" as a support unit all-together instead of having a gigantic un-efficient block put next to it.
I've been saying this for weeks, people really don't realise how WIDE these cards are. Cases like the 4000D and such are so narrow. People won't be able to put their side panels on lol.

I had no idea how huge it was till you busted out the PS5. Having one myself I now know that graphics card is monstrous
The sad thing is the design with CPUs and GPUs in the past years is performance through power. When still being able to shrink the design and place more transistors on a chip, it was like same die size and power consumption, but higher performance. Nowadays, all you get is more performance for incredibly high costs, bigger dies and a lot more TDP / power consumption.
It is like the pinnacle of design is already in the past and we just throw more power into the system. Like with combustion engine cars - you can easily tune them to have more power - but at the cost of bigger fuel pumps and an equivalent amount of higher fuel consumption.
I am a bit worried, cases will have to grow bigger and bigger to accommodate the insanely huge cards and power supplies.
This trend is not nearly as "green" as nvidias trademark is.
Edit: Okay, nVidia put something nice off here. But the price is non-negotiable and way too high.
Shit take. Yeah you can buy an 800 hp V8 now, but you can also buy a 200hp 1.5 because the tech scales. When I was in high school a stock 1.5 made 70 hp.
@@shane864 it's a bit different than that. You can buy a V8 with 600 hp from BMW for 100.000€ and awesome performance or a V8 with 550 hp from Pagani - for 2 Mio. €. We actually do not have this choice right now, you only get the Pagani without the bling-bling but they even wanted to sell a 4 cylinder for a top price. At least they found out THAT was actually too much. But nVidia just does it. They charge you because they want to test how much they can charge before people stop buying their stuff for absurdly overpriced prices. The owner even said this is the way to go and it will become worse in the future (not for him, for us of course).

The issue isn't the size of the card - cause the PCB is pretty small - but of the cooler. They've overdesigned the cooler as they have thought about the 8nm chips from Samsung. Now they're using the 4nm chips from TSMC which are more efficient.
I Doubt it's even possible anymore. The companies would have to use some league leading technology in order to decrease the size, which would be extremely costly. It's not like a console where someone gets the ah-ha moment and can magically decrease it's size by 40% like with the PS2. Even now when they make the upgraded changes to the console it's not by leaps and bounds.
I'm probably going for the beefiest this generation lol, all depends on which has the best cooling. (Good thing I expected something like this and had bought a Corsair Obsidian 750D airflow)
*Not too many people remember the 1080ti Zotac AMP extreme. (At the time that thing was ridiculously massive lol)

You could also get a lower tier model with more modest power draw and a regular size cooler. AMD and NVIDIA reference designs are usually pretty decent and stylish.
When I built my first PC, I went with a Thermaltake Core X9 case because I had no idea how big the parts were and I wanted to be sure they fit. It was extreme overkill at the time, but with how things are going, it might be just right for modern hardware.
Everyone called me crazy for picking fractal design for their massive R4 case and then saying i wanted the R7 XL later. Well, now it seems that the XL may be required to even consider a monster like this.

We've literally got to the point where putting a graphics card in your pc case has become a feature you put on the front of the box.
We’re about to see a renaissance in individuals and enthusiasts going back to full size tower formats just to fit the 40 series card onto their build.

I hope it also means the return of metal side panels with fan mounts, and 5.25" bays (useful for well more than just optical drives). They'll have the space to include them again, so let's see it! Thank you for posting this, I had no idea how much bigger the 4090 was over all the other generations. I know it is the most powerful, but the issues with having to get an ATX 3.0 PSU (and replace my EVGA 1000W) plus its overall size makes me think I'll join the ranks of second-hand 3080/3090 buyers.

I still love the look of the 10xx series cards, they look pretty slick. I also love the look of the founders 30/40 series cards.

I totally wasn't into new hardware for more than twelve years and at a certain point, it was plain to build a new system from scratch. So last year, I looked up for the latest sh*t and got me a new top notch 'everything' (hopefully for the next 12 years). I was amazed and shocked how pricey things went, how just everything lights up like a christmas tree, how silent and fast everything is and also totally accepted that nowadays a card with NVIDIA chip is large. As I found out now, it was just a ROG Strix thing :D Still I love it!
It's not just a ROG Strix thing, i have a Gigabyte AORUS and it also an absolute chonker, it's actually bigger than the ROG
I finally dumped my GTX 770 build, and got a 3080 build and still pushing Windows 10 pro. After watching this I don't know what's going to happen in another 10 years.
Here's a crazy idea. Make the strix bigger and integrate the mobo functions and cpu socket and have a chassis around it with minimum cabling (like gigabyte) and you now have a chungus GPU that also becomes your pc..
or maybe just maybe actually keep improving the card instead of dropping them as soon they make them a lil better

The founder's edition is just slightly bigger than an Xbox Sieres S console by a few millimeters. So if you can fit a XBSS in your case than you can fit a Founder's Edition.

I've been pulling up all the specs to see what would fit in my case, the Founders card is by far the SMALLEST of the 4090s. It's wild.
That's cuz subvendors had the information they needed to make cooling solution for a 600watt tdp card when in fact it's 450.

@@zzzpoma9961 4090 with a solid OC has shown around 666 watts of power. So it can for sure get up there if you want it to. And that's if no one is crazy enough to shunt mod one of these monsters under water cooling.
Here's hoping a 90-degree adapter is released to not only alleviate the strain of that cable coming out of the power socket, but to also make hiding it behind the card a little easier.
Just what I was thinking when I saw him plug it in. That straight plug doesn't seem like it's going to work without putting a huge bend in it.
@@justinreschke3642 Same reason I picked up one of those 90 adapters for the USB 3.0 19-pin header on my motherboard. With that obnoxious thick cable coming from the front panel of my O11D XL, I had a hard time getting the cable run to sit properly without it looking like it was about to tear the entire header right off the board.
Adapter just sits in between cable and header, no alarming sag, cable hides nice and clean behind the lower radiator.
A 180 adapter would be ideal. No bends near the connectors at all that way
at this point they can place connector on the other side of the card, clearly it overhangs further than motherboard and there will be no interference with it.
A lot of this cards logistics seem halfbaked.
I remember when my grandfather used to joke about my old EVGA 1070 would "dim the lights" and I took that as a joke but now there's actually a GPU that could do that and he thought it was huge and this thing makes it look like a toy in front of it
Your grand father should no the size and performance of old pcs...so the 1070 is pretty energy safeing compaired to those pcs and totally destroys them.

Lord.. I remember my TNT2, Geforce MX400, Geforce 4400ti, Radeon 9600XT (Which lasted me a bit) e.t.c. These new cards are just insane in size and price. But here I am, waiting for the Strix 4090 to drop so I can snag one for my new build.. like an idiot.

I bought the black version of that exact Lian Li case earlier this year specifically because I wanted to have room to upgrade my GPU. I legitimately did not even consider the possibility of a GPU being too large for this case.

I think case manufacturers will start including vertical mounts as standard just for the weight concern. Unless a separate case for your GPU becomes a thing...

Between the tech channels they've crammed so many large cards and AIOs into shoebox sized cases, but considering the zero-wasted space cases like that and the sheer size of these cards, its almost self-defeating because the overall case will need to be relatively large anyway, might as well step up to a larger easier to use case.
I just upgraded from a GTX 1070 to an rx 6700 xt, and just that was enough to make me think "man, that cooler's quite a bit bigger, I hope it fits"

I just upgraded to the XFX Swift 309 6700XT from a MSI 5700, and yeah, it was considerably bigger. I have a Lancool II, and with the 6700XT I still have about 4-5 inches of additional clearance.
I had to remove one of my front case fans to fit my 6700XT. Hopefully this trend will reverse in a generation or two and cards will get smaller

@@heroicsquirrel3195 cause I caught the 6700xt at a really good time pricing wise. Got an ASRock Challenger D for 370 bucks, which is a total steal for the performance it delivers. I think they were still under 400 last time I looked, but prices aren't the most stable. If it was closer to MSRP, or anywhere near what comparable Nvidia cards cost, then yeah I probably would have held off.
But I was making the switch from 1080p to 1440 at the same time and I couldn't be happier. Everything's so crispy.
Truly a necessary upgrade for my TF2, ULTRAKILL, and Morrowind gaming needs.

Going to stick with my 3090 FE for a while since the 4090 is 2000€ here. 😅. But that GTX1080ti, that was a real special card! Still able to run some modern games at 1080p/1440p! Can remember I tried to run Battlefield 3 at 4k back then with my 1080ti
My 2ghz OC'd 1080ti runs a 1440p ultrawide easily... As well as my Vive pro... I might get a 3080 some day.... some day 🤷♂️

I have an EVGA 3090ti and it looks like an aircraft carrier in my case. It dwarfs all the other components around it, and the 4090 would dwarf that. This is insanity.

I never thought in my 30+years of building PCs that my ATX case would now be considered micro ATX. My first graphics card didn't even have a heatsink or cooler. Now you buy a nice big cooler and get a graphics card as a bonus.

The thing is, I always thought it will be the motherboard that'll take up too much space. But, nope! You can just use a micro ATX. The mobo is now smaller than the expansion card that goes on it. GPU sold in a case, with support for CPU/RAM/M.2 add on cards, when? Alternately, USB4/Thunderbolt 4 to external GPU housed in a separate box with it's own power supply, and it's own circuit from the house mains.

Large cases will always have their place as some people just need the expandability for large add-on cards or storage bays or cooling. I personally wouldn't use a case with any less than 4-5 HDD bays since I have a number of HDDs for bulk storage, currently using a CoolerMaster COSMOS SE "mid tower" that I got in 2017 that's bigger than some "full towers" with 4 HDDs in 5 bays for bulk storage (can go 8 3.5" bays but removed the middle 3 to make room for my 290 mm 1080 Ti and it should, in theory, fit this 4090 not that I'd get it anyway).

I used STRIX GTX 1080 for 6 years, just upgraded to the White STRIX 3090 that is in this video
Let's not forget, that the 40xx series also requires DDR 5 RAM for most efficient use, meaning you will also have to upgrade your MoBo anyway. And with the new DDR 5 MoBos also come new Socket Types so you might end up needing a new CPU as well. Given that I am correctly informed and have not made some mistakes when I looked into this out of personal curiousity. So if all that is assumed to be correct, getting a new case should be the cheapest among those 4 trouble makers... just saying...
Oh yeah and let's not forget, that with with large cases, you need to completely overhaul your cooling system and adapt it to the much larger space, meaning you also need different fans and fan setups and have to do additional math and shit for optimal airflow and to avoid hot air pockets, which are far more likely to happen in larger spaces..

The thing that the commenter doesn't understand is that most motherboards for at least the last couple of years allow for pcie *4.0* and no current gpu can fully saturate the max speed of 4.0. You *don't* need pcie 5.0 to run a 4090 at full speed

@@tclemens96 I guess we need a new standard to have mounting brackets on both ends of the GPU. Putting everyting vertically or messing with custom supports is ridiculous and inconvenient for PC builders.
I just lay my case flat on it's side on my desk. I find it more convenient that way, and because I have steel side-panels, I can stack stuff on top of it, no problem, so no effective desk space lost.
I remember having my HD 5970, and it was a long card even in my HAF 932 case. These cards are insane.

Lian-Li 011 Air Mini can house it (362MM) - but it's not exactly a small, small case. With a microATX board, a 280MM AIO with a reasonable radiator - it works. Just built one.

To me I feel like AiO 4090/4080s are preferable now. The size of the card is way WAY smaller, and Iv already got 2 fans at the top of my case where I can put the radiator.

@@pgmasterson1163 there's been AiO water cooled graphics cards for a while, but as long as I can remember they've never been popular. I'm guessing that's because cards haven't been this massive and produce this much heat before though.
Asus and EVGA both had AiO "hybrid" cards. From the reviews I've seen, they keep temps much lower than on air, and ran quiet. The trade-off is they were quite a bit more expensive than their air cooled counterparts most of the time.
@@Nareimooncatt thanks guys for responses, if the cards are getting stupid big on air cooled alone, I'd go for an AIO solution, seeing the size of this and comparing how I have a 3090FE card that already is quite chonky and it's going to be dwarfed by these new ones, it maybe time to utilize the space.
I wish more reviewers got their hands on the AORUS Master 4090 like Der8auer did. It really dwarfs the rest of the cards.

People that to not already own a large full-tower case are beginners. I only buy full-tower cases because of how good easy they are to build within and the airflow is excellent. I also only buy full-tower cases with wheels to not cripple the case because of how heavy they are.
Considering recent technical advances from Nvidia and AMD I bet we're about to see graphics cards as external boxes (connected via Thunderbolt) with dedicated PSUs starting from 1000Watt for future equivalents of 3060 RTX.

By the time I'm ready to upgrade the decently beefy Sapphire Radeon 5700XT Nitro+ in my current system, I'll probably be able to get a similar dual slot card that walks all over this hyper-compensator monstrosity, cost and power wise it's about as practical as 4 way SLI back when that was a thing for a few years, and barely saw any support or uptake

And here I was wondering if I did the right thing ordering a 3070 a couple months ago. This makes me feel better about my purchase.
I did the same thing with an Asus tuf gaming rtx 3070 when the price dropped. Upgrade from a gtx 1060 6gb. The expected 4000 series TDP was going to mean I need a new 1000w psu and 1200w ups. That's adding like 4 to 5 hundred bucks.
I am not buying any psu now. Let the atx 3.0 stuff come out first and prove itself. Otherwise you'll need to buy one again next year.
My define R6 full tower won't fit a 4090 in default config (300mm max) Need to move the drive panel back for max 440mm length. It's ridiculous that a tower this big might not fit the next gen.
Worst case scenario, in 4 or 5 years you'll have to start playing modern titles in 1080p.

Seeing Jay try fitting that into a case reminded me of playing Tetris with an MSI 3070 Gaming Z Trio and a Corsair 280X. It'd fit, if it went in at an angle, and you then slid the front fans into place after the GPU was installed 😂
That is freaking bonkers. I have a vert mount GPU in an open air case, so it can "fit" anything really, but I still don't think I want a card that huge. Water cooling is the way to go, but with the price of the card, and then the price of all the water cooling components... Just doesn't seem worth it to me.
Considering the performance doesn't look particularly eye-popping, yeah... Let's wait for them to come up with something looking less like a prop out of a cartoon and packing noticeably more punch (also, at least with 32GBs).

It has the same power draws as 30 series under load. The size you're seeing is just the heatsink.
