Just had my tonsillectomy two weeks ago and I finally felt back to normal on day 9-10. Here are some of my top tips for an easier/quicker recovery: - Sleep with your head elevated for a week after the surgery, this is gonna prevent/ease earaches. - Make a pain meds schedule and organise the times you take them, and do not skip! (if you feel nauseous or vomit from pain meds, ask your doctor to prescribe you something to ease nausea, trust me it helps) - Try your best to stay hydrated and eat even if it hurts, without food and liquids you will slow your recovery. I forced soft food and water/sports drinks down even though it hurt, and keeping the throat moist with drinking frequently helps your scabs stay soft and come off better/less painful. - if you feel a bit better by day 4, try to do some light activity like going on a walk, it is going to get your mind off the pain for a little while and I noticed that moving my body and getting my blood flowing a bit helped with pain.
Thank youuuuuu. I'm on day 9 currently of my tonsillectomy recovery and I do feel normal. What has been helping me a bunch when eating and drinking is hard are popsicles made by minute made. They are both delicious and very soothing. Kinda addicting tho if I'll be honest. Never loved popsicles more in my life as a teenage boy.
I’m on day 2 and all of this is very helpful. Even though I haven’t really gotten into the thick of recovery, I’ve been getting out walking my dog a few times each day, staying on top of pain meds, lots and lots of water along with popsicles and ice cream. I haven’t braved any solid foods yet, but I’m thinking of giving it a go in the next day or so.
Thank you so much for taking the time to post videos like these, I've the weekend and Day 3 for me Post surgery and my uvula has finally started to reduce in swelling. the Pain is still ridiculous but these videos reassure me there's hope.
@@nenadristic2695 Hang in there. little by little it improves. the more you elevate your head, the more cold/ice you put in your mouth, the faster the swelling goes down.
@@youngfresh85 since the last update here, I am having all other difficulties unfortunately. My throat space completly dropped. My soft palate is lower and making my air space much smaller. I dont know what is Happening. I went to ENT he said Nothing is wrong...
Thank you for posting this. I'm having a tonsillectomy tomorrow. I feel optimistic that it will be painful for a short while then improve the quality of my health and life in the long run.
Had mine taken out this past Thursday 11/7/2019. It really does hurt, but you have to stay ahead of the pain with the medicine they give you and follow a good diet.
Street Skolla soups and lots of water/Gatorade. A lot of ice pops! Stock your freezer with them! Get you a lot of chicken noodle soup! Don’t eat anything you have to chew on to eat. And make sure they give you the sucker to suck on before you eat cause it numbs your throat so it won’t hurt as much.
Street Skolla it’s been 8 days now and I’m starting to slowly eat more of the regular food, but my throat still hurts after I’m done eating so taking it slow. Keep up with the pain meds also, it really helps. Just keep that mouth wet all the time, it hurts more if you let it dry.
Doc is ABSOLUTELY RIGHT, stay AHEAD of the pain or you’re screwed! I had the surgery 20 days ago and I made the rookie mistake on day 5 telling myself; “Oh I can survive on paracetamol and ibuprofen”🤦🏼♀️🙅🏼♀️ NOPE! Keep taking pain meds(opioids and narcotics) even if the pain hasn’t hit yet, because once it does, you’re gonna be in A LOT of pain for up to 10 days straight, and NO pain meds are gonna help you! I couldn’t eat for days because I needed pain meds to eat, and you need food in your stomach to take the pain meds! If you’re an adult having this surgery, please learn from my mistake! I see lots of post op videos on here where everybody made the same mistake! You’re welcome, and I wish you a speedy recovery!💖 Ps: Buy the ice blocks that’s used for coolers/chilly bins and wrap it up in a towel(for your cheeks/neck/ears) and eat ice cream/ice chips, it helps a lot!
Thank you! I shall do as I’m told. Mine are coming out in next couple of weeks. Hopefully all goes well... but nope not looking forward to any type of pain to be honest.
Just had mine done i'm over 50 ..Day 4,5,6 the worst .Crazy pain can't sleep. Perks only helped a little im on day 7 I thought it was getting better I got some sleep..then another degree of pain started that won't stop. If anyone could go back to work after a week God bless them...
@@thelethalones This is me right now I'm a week in and I can barely sleep much😐 I feel like I'm kinda screwed regardless because the pain meds I was prescribed aren't strong enough (no narcoz at all literally)
Hey guys, my journey so far (today is D5): - D0/D1: admitted to ICU post op as I had sleep apnea due to chronically enlarged tonsils. Went quite well, pain not too bad, was actually eating porridge next day with minimal issues - D2: pain a bit worse but still not bad, trying to maintain hydration + having jello/ice cream - D3: pain was 6-7/10 on waking, felt like someone took a veggie peeler to my throat and painful to swallow. I was discharged on an NSAID, TXA, and strong opioid breakthru med (Take them and don't try to be a hero). Also had minor bleed - I tend to notice it happens when I wake up, probably due to my throat being super dry and maybe the scabs breaking up but minor bleeding which resolved on its own - D4: pretty bad pain again on waking, taking the strong opioid medication more regularly - allows me to stay on top of the pain + easier to eat (although the only solid thing I have had so far was chicken/corn soup) - D5: today....its a bit up and down, pain tends to be worse in morning settles throughout day if I stay hydrated and medicated. Got a bad taste in my mouth as well... Advice: - maintain hydration, ice chips/popsicles, watermelon smoothie - I noted more saliva after eating dairy so just something to be mindful of - don't be a hero, take the pain meds and stay on top of it rather than reacting to the pain - mobilize as tolerated - just short walks around the neighborhood will do wonders - you'll get there - everyone does
I’m on day 5 and I am absolutely miserable!! I’m 38 and I feel like this is a living nightmare and my doctor isn’t handling my pain good at all! It’s sad! I’m hardly able to drink and eating is a task I’ve not ate much at all my pain is off the charts!
Thank you so much for making this video. I’m a grandmother helping out my daughter while her and hubby work. I just didn’t expect the smell on day six. I’m from Australia 🇦🇺 and once again THANK YOU for taking the time to make this post. May God bless you and your family.🙏💕
Thank you for taking the time to make this clear and informative video. I’m 34 years old and in day 2 and can’t believe how painful it is. So scared of risk of bleeding after all the stories. The worst part is this mucus! It makes it so hard not to cough. Wasn’t expecting that part. Ahh.
Thanks Doc! Just got this surgery done. It’s hasn’t been easy but we are recovering promptly and very well! Just 4/5 days out and feeling way better with less & less pills or meds :)
Had mine out at 35yoa. My doc said, “it’s gonna be brutal”. He wasn’t lying. Tylenol and Motrin didn’t do anything. It it was totally worth it. I haven’t been sick since then.
Dr. Liu I thank you greatly for all of the teaching you have put together for us here. You have the perfect tempo and stance for this, especially for people who didn't get the teaching before the procedure. (people like me) I had them out just this morning, thinking we were only doing biopsies and my doctor decided to do a tongue biopsy and a tonsillectomy once he got in there. I did tell him before surgery to do whatever he felt inclined to do, as we are ruling out cancer. Finally managed to eat a banana and skipped dinner because I refused to go through that again. A tall glass of oatmilk and a gummy vitamin was me going above and beyond! I can't say it enough! Thanks Dr. Liu, from a patient you didn't know you had. Much love from Georgia, U.S.A.!
Thank you Dr Liu for these videos. I'm currently recovering from my surgery(day 6) and you have answered many questions that I've been wanting to know. Pain is terrible but at least I now know I'm in the right path.
Thank you soo much. This helped me a lot. I just got my tonsils out yesterday and boy is it rough. The tip about staying ahead of the pain is game changer because I'm really bad with pain.
when will the hyper salivation end ? I can’t even sleep or do anything with out having to spit every 3 seconds .... I’m on day 8 I have been like this for 3 days now ,,, thank you !
It's less that you are making saliva. It's more that we don't fully appreciate how much we normally swallow reflexively during the course of a normal day. And when your throat hurts after surgery, adn you don't as often, or as effectively, swallow through the course of the day, it all puddles and collects.
@@Theelaceceo it wasn’t all that bad honestly, the first week i didn’t eat much, but slowly i started having popsicles and jello. By the end of my second week my diet was back to normal. I didn’t have any bleeding at all surprisingly even though i had gotten sick and was vomiting from the medicine. I’d say the worst part is the feeling and smell of the scabs, but i’m lucky enough to have not coughed any up. I swallowed them while eating without even noticing.
Thank you. I'm so INFLAMED. My throats almost swollen shut! Water stings! Every time I manage to swallow a large amount if phlegm comes up and gets stuck.
When I got mine removed they gave me a anti-inflammatory and anti-swelling drug in one. It was liquid. Didn’t look very good. Didn’t have to use it thoughZ
how did it turn out? i coughed n it felt like a big ass ball or string of flem came up but then got stuck and went back down, will i be ok? i’m worried
I am a twelve year old girl who has had their tonsillectomy today and here are my thoughts. Eating and drinking and even swallowing your spit is horrible. The pain is quite bad but hydrating is most important. If you dont hydrate, the scabs in your mouth will crack from dryness which will lead to bleeding which indicates your mouth is extremely dry. Have some liquids to hydrate but if bleeding doesn’t stop, head to the hospital that you had the procedure done. It is most important to keep hydrated overnight so I recommend you have a bottle of water with you at all times.
Just had a tonsillectomy and uvulectomy this past afternoon. I am so sleepy. Thank you for this video. I've watched a couple times. Now that the surgery is done, I'm feeling lucky. So far so good except I can't relax enough to sleep. The need to swallow is strong, but when I swallow, the pain is there waving with an evil smile, and all the spitting is annoying. But those are mild symptoms, for which I'm grateful. One thing I will say is that warm tea and warm water are helping more than all these popsicles. Hopefully that info is helpful to someone.
I’m in my second week post op Also had my uvula removed 35yo male Day 1-3 pain is so high 10/10 when attempting to swallow, which makes taking the many medications very difficult. Didn’t even think about eating, just sleep when you can to ease the pain. Waking up with horrible taste in mouth and pain is even worse when waking up Day 4 - admitted to hospital emergency as i was not taking in any fluids. Received an IV drip for dehydration Day 5-7- feeling a little better, pain when swallowing is now around 6-7/10 but at this point I’ve already lost about 6kgs of body weight from not being able to eat/drink properly Day 8 - admitted to hospital once more this time for hyperventilation and loss of balance. Once again received IV drip Day 9-now (15) - pain has largely subsided but an even worse issue has been present; constant saliva production of the wound is spilling into my sinus and causing me to vomit on a daily basis which if you are like me and hate vomitting, it’s worse than the pain.
Ugh, watching these videos a couple days before my surgery is giving me so much anxiety. I'm scared of the pain making me dehydrated but I'm even more anxious about nausea. It's the worst
Hey everyone! Had this! I have to admit swallowing was a little hard but not extremely painful, just kinda weird feeling. There was one day where my whole mouth hurt for a few hours. But overall it was a week to recover to about 80percent and then 3 weeks to get full 100 percent recovery. I recommend drinking tons of water as weird and painful as it feels. It helps the healing :)
Hey all you beautiful people. I just wanted to add some things right here that have helped me and hopefully can help you too. Hang in there! It gets so much better. It really is a heck of an experience. I thought the 4 wisdom teeth holes they left me with in high school was messy and painful and aggravating. This is the absolute most debilitated I've ever been as far as my dietary ability. Like, I'm actually on a liquid diet. Bananas, muffins, pancake, all too rough. Before I begin, I'll qualify as a health care professional. I'm an RN with ACLS certification, so cardiac is my specialty, but health is my profession. As a side note, absolutely follow all instructions in regards to your post-op meds. I write down what meds I take and when on a piece of paper taped to my wall so there is not a question of whether I've already taken the pain pill that I really feel like I need right now. . .do not go up on your pain pill dose or frequency. If pain is out of control contact your physician and follow instructions. I supplement with 200-400mg of Ibuprofen between opiate doses with noticeable improvement in symptoms. Pro tips I've learned so far: 1. Keep twice a day mouth hygeine plan. Brush very carefully and slowly. Take as long as you need, and stay away from the surgical area. Include 2x daily flossing also. I use 0.25 - 0.5 strength Listerine mixed with water when I rinse after flossing. I get a little back there with a half-assed gargle, but don't focus on that as much. If whatever you're rinsing with burns, spit it OUT. Nothing should be burning during hygeine time in MY routine personally because it needs to be a time that has all the possible attraction to you as possible because its the one thing you can do really well to expedite your unfortunate situation right now. 2. DO NOT try to eat thicker foods than you are ready for. Best things I've come up with? Oatmilk - BEST, Almond Milk - SECOND BEST. Cream of mushroom soup with Oatmilk to thin it out more. Experimenting with adding turmeric for the antioxidative and anti-inflammatory properties of the spice. Doesn't seem to cause burning during eating the way the powdered garlic did. Boost / Ensure nutritional drinks are like heaven poured over ice. And guess what? These things are available on EBT/SNAP!! Eating foods that remove the newly formed scabs that your good doctor burned into the most sensitive areas of your throat is a BAD IDEA and you will be made aware of this fact soon enough unless your doc has you on one HELL of a pain pill regimen. You may get through a meal of powdered oatmeal like I did only to find that now your throat is on fire because you just weren't ready for that. 3. Matcha. Matcha is a type of green tea higly prized for its potent effects as a medicine for inflammatory illness, but it also boasts large amounts of epigallocatechin-3-gallate (EGCG) www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/articles/PMC4082721/#:~:text=EGCG%20is%20the%20major%20catechin,obesity%20%5B4%2D6%5D. So matcha is green tea that is powdered very finely so that you actually consume the whole tea leaf when you drink it. It takes very little powder to make a lot of tea. My Matcha Method: Cut about a tablespoon of mutter and melt in microwave.. Add matcha to plant milk Add melted butter Add a little sugar, honey of you have it. Remember, we're trying to make this 'pleasant' :) Shake up your beverage quite well and serve over ice, Enjoy knowing that you are packing an herbal and medicinal superpower to your immune system. I really hope this helps someone :)
I'm on day 6 and my experience is nowhere near as bad as some people have described. 1/ Start eating solid food from day 1 2/ Use ice packs for your neck and jaw 3/ Keep up with your medication
I’m on day 6 of my recovery. I feel perfectly fine right now. The first few days were the worse, but weren’t bad at all. I was just a uncomfortable. Not necessarily in pain. I took my pain meds like clock work, and drank so much water.
24 YEARS OLD HERE 2022. Hi guys! So not sure if everyone’s experience is different, but I’m 24 years old and got my tonsils out 5 days ago on May 16th, 2022. I was told it was going to be awful, especially being an adult. I’m on day 5 and have only taken the liquid hydro 3 times and no pills. The pain is more in my swollen tongue and uvula than my actual throat. My throat looks identical to the photos of Day 4 and 5 in the vid so I’m assuming I’m on track. Definitely a rough experience but I don’t think my pain has ever gone higher than a 6 or 7 out of 10. This is not to act like I’m tough, believe me, it hurts and is really rough trying to eat and swallow…but it is not world ending like people say. I’m guessing people have different pain thresholds because my friend got her tonsils out at 21 and said it was the worst thing she’s ever done. I believe that If you take as little medicine as possible from the start, (as taking a lot early on leads to severe nausea on the first few days since you can’t eat or drink to balance out the medicine) I would take the liquid medicine once a day and if you absolutely need to, take Tylenol. People say stick to popsicles and ice cream, but Cold water helps more than anything. Also, ice cream being dairy can really up your mucus production making it even harder to swallow. I think you just have to accept that eating anything (even popsicles) just won’t be possible and yes, you can survive without food for the first few days! Stick to water, cold broth if your real hungry, and then a popsicle if absolutely necessary. As I said I’m only on day 4 but it hasn’t been too bad. I hope this helps and I pray everyone going through this has a safe and successful surgery and recovery! Concentrated list 1. Drink water 2. Stay away from ice cream 3. When attempting to swallow, let the water basically start going down your throat and then swallow (you’ll know what I mean when you can actually feel the pain) 4. Avoid taking a ton of medicine. I’d try once or twice a day and seeing if you can survive. Can always take more, can’t take less after the fact. 5. Sleep and if you cough or sneeze, make sure to immediately drink water.
I'm on day 7 and I'm absolutely miserable. The scabs are starting to fall off and it stings worse than anything I've ever felt. I haven't been able to eat anything all day.
@@cienna5144 the thing that saved me was those gas station icys or whatever they call them. I got two large ones stuck them in the freezer and it was all I ate for two days but they made my throat feel so much better.
So I literally just had my tonsils and adenoids out today, and I didn’t do any research prior because I have been so afraid of the side effects, so I guess now is the best time to check in and learn about it!
Do people get their tonsils removed due to tonsil stones? I haven’t had strep throat before but they cause difficulty swallowing, my doctor just gave me antibiotics but I’m getting so annoyed with the difficulty swallowing and bad breath. Do you think I can find a doctor who will preform it based solely on the tonsil stones?

Great tip for foods in regards of fluids and calories: make smoothies with full fat milk, smooth peanut butter, lots of ice cream, bananas and couple of scoops of protein powder if u have any. That's gonna come out as an ice cold smoothie packed with calories, carbs, fats and proteins. Also minerals and vitamins from milk and peanut butter. Stay strong
Had mine out on Tuesday. Its Thursday now and going OK. Taking pain meds 30 to 40 mins before I'm due to have food really helps me to be able to eat small amounts. Ice water and ice pops are great. My tongue is nearly as sore as back of my throat. The saliva production is never ending once I stop eating that's pretty annoying but its working the muscles when I swallow it. Early days but hoping it won't get too bad as it heals and hopefully no bleeding. 🤞 night time is worst as I get a tickle and coughing hurts so much.
on day 2 morning the pain is pretty bad, day 1 night had to call 911 because how swollen my throat was and had made me choke on water 4 times that day and 1 time on my medicine. not looking forward to the next week or 2 😂🙏🏼✝️

Hi Gene, it's Jacques here. My wife had her tonsels removed because of bad breath. It was about a month ago. Her breath smells a bit different but still smells bad. Is it normal for her breath to still smell bad a month after the surgery before the bad breath goes away?
Jaques, bad breath can be caused by a dry mouth... make sure she drinks a lot of liquids and eats the kind of candy that supposed to lubricate the mouth.... if she has teeth infections, that can cause bad breath too. have her go to a dentist

It really depends on how severe your migraines normally are and what you typically take for them, as well as what other medical conditions you have. You should ask your doctor for what you can take.
@@VIVIANANOROCEA I have lupus that's attacking my central nervous system and I have severe migraines almost weekly. Often leaving me in the bed for days. But, Frova 2mg is really a great medicine. And, I'm 54 and facing an upcoming tonsillectomy. I'm used to being in constant pain, but this sounds horrible.
If the meds aren't helping, try ice right at the back of your neck, where the top of your spine meets the base of your skull. Also, ask for phenegren suppositories. They'll help you fall asleep.
When I got my tonsils and adenoids removed it was absolute hell for 2+ weeks. I had the pleasure of doing it during CHRISTMAS BREAK. So I was in terrible pain for Christmas. But at least I didn’t have to exercise.

Great video, Doc strait to the point. I am 3 days shy from my 2 weeks recovery time. All I can say is that it definitely gets worst before it gets better. It's a slow painful process. That's why for me it was very annoying. Sleepless nights, headaches, even though I did drink alot of fluids and did eat soft food, and took my opioid medicine very serious. I still had alot of misconfort. This surgery sucks but it's a times necessary. Good luck to the patients in the future.

@@GeneLiuMD it will be 2 weeks as or tomorrow, yesterday was the first day I could drink a cuppa tea without a straw, also started to eat solids 2days ago, I've lost 11lbs in total. The pain is getting bare able, when I was taking tablets they were only working for 2hours and sleep was none existance. Most of the scabs have gone still have a lot of green yellow mucus foaming looking we're the scaring we're. Still can't eat fruit which I love it's stings
I had tonsillectomy surgery yesterday. Today I woke up with phlegm, I don't know what to do, I'm scared to hack it out. It makes me want to clear my throat often and it also makes swallowing a bit uncomfortable. Also I have had the need to push while urinating, before I got discharged I told the nurse, she said it's the anesthesia. I still have this issue where I get the urge but only a little bit comes out and I have to push the rest... considering I'm keeping well hydrated, I find myself doing this at least 3 times an hour.
I've had 2 surgeries and, yes, the anesthesia makes some people like us not able to pee. It puts those muscles to sleep. Running the sink, deep breathing, thinking of waterfalls, trying to "talk" to the muscles to get them working again. I am pee shy anyway, it didn't help having a nurse hovering over me. But it eventually comes back. The more you work the muscles on the toilet, the better they wake up. It's one of the most miserable parts for me after surgery. This is an old comment, so you're hopefully fully recovered, but if your bladder gets really distended, the nurses can use a catheter. Good to be aware of if you ever have another surgery.
Day 1 and 2 were really easy for me. 2am on day 3 I started bleeding. Went to the ER at 5am. Swallowed blood for over 3 hours. I puked up most of the blood after that, maybe 5 different puke sessions of pure blood/bloodclots. After that I had diarrhea which was black for 2 days. Day 3 pain was a 9/10 per swallow. Thankfully days 4 and 5 went pretty well except for the fact that I can’t sleep. My mouth winds up open and my tonsils and tongue turn dry as bone. This is probably what caused me to bleed, and it’s also very painful on the tonsils. 4th night I couldn’t sleep because I was producing too much saliva. Swallowing all of it was making me nauseous. Had maybe 2 hours of sleep total. Now I’m on night 5, doubt I’ll get much sleep. I know if I try to sleep it’s not going to work out well, and I’ll just end up in a lot more pain the next morning. This has been the hardest thing I’ve ever had to do, can’t even sleep through it like I do most of my problems. The sleep I do get is mostly nightmares that I’m constantly waking up from. Feels like I’ve been sleeping for hours but turns out it’s only been 1. I just happened to wake up and fall asleep about 15 times within that 1 hour. It’s torture. After day 3 I really regretted getting the surgery. I just want it to be over. The hunger is probably the easiest thing to deal with. Lost 12 pounds in 5 days, crave for anything I see. But my priorities are set, and hunger is last on the list, followed by sleep.
i’m on day 7... i’ve barely eaten anything since i’ve gotten surgery which worries me. also, i still can’t talk and can barely open my mouth. should I be trying to talk through the pain or is it better to just not talk at all while going through this recovery??
Jordyn Mitchell I’ve had surgery 3 days ago , & the swelling is not as bad , I haven’t had any real pain since day 1post-op, I talked to my doctor & he said tht for me that it was ok that I took my hydrocodone & then take ibuprofen around 3-4hrs after and then take my medicine again 3-4hrs after.. it’s helped a lot with the pain & swelling. Also for food Campbell’s drinkable soup is a god. My mom blended chicken into mine & let it sat and got soft it was very easy to get down, also ice cream is really good.
Lakeirya Lee i’ve been taking the ibuprofen as well! i might try the drinkable soup, but at the same time i’ve been trying to eat soup, ice cream, applesauce etc.. i’m just over it because my throat always ends up burning. i’ve been drinking a lot of water though and keeping it easy. i’m ready for this pain to go away so i can finally eat actual meals again!
I have the appetite to eat it’s just when I swallow and the food goes in where my tonsils used to be it feels uncomfortable and I can’t eat and my dad gets so mad at me but he don’t understand
I'm on day 8 gagged real hard popped a scab bleed a bit I seriously cant wait to get over this and be fully healed this is hell iv lost 16lbs from not eating
I'm on day 11 now and the pain is still constantly there but not as severe as the other days! I get to eat more stuff but the main concern is that my tongue from the middle toward the back still feels a little numb and my food taste has become BAD :( I'm not able to taste foods at this point.. it started ever since my surgery... and I'm so scared it might never come back :( anyone had this kind of experience? or having the same issue as me????
Has anybody had problems with their tongue? It's day 9 and from the beginning I've had more pain on my tongue (side, close to the back) than in my throat... There's a red-gray spot. I can swallow quite easily now but I can't talk or chew at all.. Doctors said it is normal but I find it absolutely annoying and have no clue of how long it will take to heal.
I’m 7 days post and I’m having that same issue that no one seems to talk about. During the surgery, the surgeon used a tool that looks like a clamp to hold the tongue firmly so that they could remove the tonsils. Please tell me if you totally recovered. Also I’ve lost my sense of taste and smell.
@@michellejones8144 I totally recovered after 15-20 days. A bit longer than the tonsils recovery. I used a spray for aphtae to soothe it a bit, under my doctor’s advise.
I'm tired of feeling like I have dementia every day from being so exhausted due to an obstructed airway and a severley deviated septum. went to ENT today and guess what tonsillectomy and spetoplasty for me. but after reading the comments I'm terrified. damn it man this sucks
Im in 4th day post-op .. i saw that white yellow plaques in the back of my throat i was scared about it especially I’m suffering from bad smell I thought it an infection
Can you use a straw after this procedure or is that a not to do thing? Also suggestions for food afterwards as i'm lactose intolerant and only like lactose-free stuff, not a fan of LF ice-cream and most online suggestions are dairy, ice, water, but I have issues staying hydrated and really wanna know if straws can be used so less likely? to irritate the area where tonsils were removed. Scheduled on the wait list for surgery in Australia and haven't got a date scheduled yet but keep getting tonsillitis and having to use antibiotics and it's happened too often. Any advice and tips on my comment muchly appreciated, Thanks heaps!
Is there science to back up that it’s harder for adults to get our tonsils than kids? I just got mine out at 25 & it’s not been fun. One of my friends goes, “I got mine out as a kid and it wasn’t that bad” -.- made me feel pretty crappy. I’ve heard it’s worse, but why? Is it really? Or maybe as a child we don’t remember the pain as much?
Kelly Borup the size of tonsils gets larger when you grow up, and recurrent infection that you will experienced with time is more than the children in each time you got sick the healing will left thick fibrous tissue around the tonsils that make it difficult to remove it and left large area of damaged tissue that will be cauterized later, but in the children the tonsils still soft small occupying a small area in the throat
I'm a amoker... and I was wondering what would happen if you started smoking after surgery? Send people tell me I'll be in too much pain to even think about smoking. What is your opinion? Please reply.....
I bled out of my mind to the point of passing out and ending up in the emergency room and getting an emergency surgery to stitch my walls. I was in the hospital for two weeks, i should’ve never had this surgery
I had my Tonsillectomy on 10days before. Everything is ok now but ear pain on left side in last few days is incredible. Can't move the neck in left side. If I do, the ear pain starts. Can't even drink anything and I barely eat. Please let me know is this normal or I have to see the Dr. Asap,. TIA
It _might_ be that the scab just came off on that side and thus everything is more sensitive on that side...which is not unusual. But there really is no way to know without you going in and being seen in order to make sure it isn't anything else. There are so many possibilities that I won't list them and can't possibly explain them all here. And more importantly, there is no way for me to know over the internet what is going on in your individual situation.
I had a tonsillectomy 11 days ago...this is my concern. First I have lost 15 pounds because every time I try to eat my tongue burns, throat swells and it feels like stinging and stabbing pain. It’s almost as if I’m allergic to actual food itself now 😔😩. The only thing I can drink is tea and ice ...And absolutely no food. The back of my tongue has big red dots and I’m very nervous. Is this normal? Also I tried to sip Gatorade and my entire mouth felt like it was on fire, I tried to eat bake fish, chocolate protein bar, vegetables, fruits...same results. I even tried a veggie burger and my last option is tofu because I’m literally just starving and I’m wondering if this surgery caused another complication.🤔 the pain goes away after pain medicine and only comes if I try to physically eat.
How is it going now? Most people never get the burning. The symptoms are not super common, but also not unheard of. Things should improve slowly. Most adults take close to 3 full weeks to get back to some semblance of "normal"
Gene Liu, MD, MMM omg you actually responded. 🥰 I found out I had an infection in my throat. The paper at the hospital said pharyngitis. I was given a penicillin shot and currently taking antibiotics called amox-clav. I have to take 1 every 12 hours. Thank you for caring ❤️
Hi Dr i am on day 13 and my left throat is burning when i drink water n eat something it was so painful. Is it normal during recovery process or i have to show my ENT DR. pls rply n sorry for my bad english.
Jesus ... having this done on the 21st of this month (September) and as much as I need it done as it has really stated to affect my breathing. I’m really bricking it now owing to the pain on top of that ... I’m not overjoyed about going into hospital whilst this COVID-19 Pandemic is still about.
Guurl , I had the same concern but ent suggested I get them done immediately since I couldn’t even breathe anymore , so I got mine removed about a week ago, I am now in full pain! How are you doing?
This may seem like an straightforward question, it is actually very nuanced and complex. It depends on how bad the apnea is. It depends on the patient's individual anatomy. It depends on the overall health, anesthetic and surgical risk, and many other factors. For many people, surgery is absolutely worth it. And for others, it isn't.
you mentioned the Uvula swelling.. mine is already large (touches my tongue and still curls) and stays swollen will this make it harder to breathe after getting my tonsils out? my doctor has considered shortening it while taking my tonsils out but i have not heard much of this procedure
I’m on day 5 and last night was awful. The doctors aren’t even sure why but I was throwing up the entire night. It was miserable. I had to go in and get help but they said they couldn’t do much because they didn’t know why I was throwing up. I had stayed hydrated and everything. I’m really nervous for the days my scabs fall off.😅
Okay doctor serious question. I got my tonsils out 8 days ago and it hasn't been that bad. But I have two problems. I and coughing up so much brown and green mucus. I can feel the brown mucus in the back of my mouth and it tastes so bad and smells like garbage. Today my right scab fell off. But I can't with the hard swallowing and the icky brown stuff. I'm worried because I hope I don't have to deal with this in the future. Please respond. feel weak
Had mine taken out yesterday. The pain is mild, and it gets worse while swallowing. I’ve been drinking gatorade and eating popsicles and that makes it a little better.
What's funny is that right now I'm going through similar symptoms but have not even gotten he surgery yet to to I assume tonsillitis messing with my ability to swallow. If post op is this level of pain I'm good, I can barely swallow and sleep but its not too bad
Day 8 today.. scab is filled with blood and has a blood clot.. second time in 2 days, went to ER first time and they said all was fine, and to gargle salt water.
Hello Dr. Liu! Good day :) I just want to ask you about tonsillectomy happened last feb. 27 of my son. He is 8 years of age. And after 5 days staying in the hospital, when we went home the doctor advice him to take a antibiotic co amoxiclav after 1 week of taking it , a weeks after, I've notice that his nails are cracking and after its cracked, it has a new nails to begin to grow. We went to dermatology to find out what was wrong about his nails I am so nervous about it. Then, the dermatology wants to have him a lab. Test ( cbc and aso titer ) it happened last march 29 his lab test result was on april 5- cbc is normal values but aso titer is positive but its not too high it just the dermatology said that it can be treated and not be treated because it is just only a small amount of bacteria it can go away on its own. But I am a bit nervous about aso titer result. His tonsil was removed and now his aso titer was positive. Again, the doctor give him an antibiotic and he is hoping the bacteria will go away. 200 iu levels of aso titer .
Best of luck to you and your doctors in solving the puzzle of what is going on. There really isn't any good way to get the whole story and come up with the answer in the comments section.
Hi doctor, I get tonsil stones on both sides here and there but recently my left side burns when I eat spicy food and when I drink hot or cold beverages is this because the stones irritates my left tonsil?
Just had my tonsillectomy two weeks ago and I finally felt back to normal on day 9-10. Here are some of my top tips for an easier/quicker recovery:
- Sleep with your head elevated for a week after the surgery, this is gonna prevent/ease earaches.
- Make a pain meds schedule and organise the times you take them, and do not skip! (if you feel nauseous or vomit from pain meds, ask your doctor to prescribe you something to ease nausea, trust me it helps)
- Try your best to stay hydrated and eat even if it hurts, without food and liquids you will slow your recovery.
Thank you so much for taking the time to post videos like these, I've the weekend and Day 3 for me Post surgery and my uvula has finally started to reduce in swelling. the Pain is still ridiculous but these videos reassure me there's hope.
pal4evrandevr hope you had a good recovery. Going to get mine removed soon, how long until you were okay and began to enjoy food again?
Hey, I am in day 6 and my uvula is stil touching the tounge, its the worst feeling ever. So scared its not going do reduce or something
@@nenadristic2695 Hang in there. little by little it improves. the more you elevate your head, the more cold/ice you put in your mouth, the faster the swelling goes down.

Hopefully you've essentially recovered by now.
@@frantheman7060 thanks for the tip. did u ever had dry mouth and bad breath because of the tonsils. I just got surgery today feel good so far.
You’re welcome, and I wish you a speedy recovery!💖
Ps: Buy the ice blocks that’s used for coolers/chilly bins and wrap it up in a towel(for your cheeks/neck/ears) and eat ice cream/ice chips, it helps a lot!

-3 days post op
@@thelethalones This is me right now I'm a week in and I can barely sleep much😐 I feel like I'm kinda screwed regardless because the pain meds I was prescribed aren't strong enough (no narcoz at all literally)
Hey guys, my journey so far (today is D5):
- D0/D1: admitted to ICU post op as I had sleep apnea due to chronically enlarged tonsils. Went quite well, pain not too bad, was actually eating porridge next day with minimal issues
- D2: pain a bit worse but still not bad, trying to maintain hydration + having jello/ice cream
- D3: pain was 6-7/10 on waking, felt like someone took a veggie peeler to my throat and painful to swallow. I was discharged on an NSAID, TXA, and strong opioid breakthru med (Take them and don't try to be a hero). Also had minor bleed - I tend to notice it happens when I wake up, probably due to my throat being super dry and maybe the scabs breaking up but minor bleeding which resolved on its own
- D4: pretty bad pain again on waking, taking the strong opioid medication more regularly - allows me to stay on top of the pain + easier to eat (although the only solid thing I have had so far was chicken/corn soup)
- D5: today....its a bit up and down, pain tends to be worse in morning settles throughout day if I stay hydrated and medicated. Got a bad taste in my mouth as well...
Advice:
- maintain hydration, ice chips/popsicles, watermelon smoothie - I noted more saliva after eating dairy so just something to be mindful of
- don't be a hero, take the pain meds and stay on top of it rather than reacting to the pain
- mobilize as tolerated - just short walks around the neighborhood will do wonders
- you'll get there - everyone does
Anyone figured pain is at its worst when you wake up in the morning?
YES! I'm at day 4 now. I guess it's because your throat gets so dry from sleeping.. but I'm not sure.
M. Lusyne how are you doing now? I’m currently on day 3! Not a lot of pain, but the taste in my mouth is not good.
Pain is definitely worse in the morning
Yes!
I’m on day 5 and I am absolutely miserable!! I’m 38 and I feel like this is a living nightmare and my doctor isn’t handling my pain good at all! It’s sad! I’m hardly able to drink and eating is a task I’ve not ate much at all my pain is off the charts!

Dr. Liu I thank you greatly for all of the teaching you have put together for us here. You have the perfect tempo and stance for this, especially for people who didn't get the teaching before the procedure. (people like me)
I had them out just this morning, thinking we were only doing biopsies and my doctor decided to do a tongue biopsy and a tonsillectomy once he got in there.
You're welcome. It is really my hope that these videos are helpful to people who are considering, or are in the process of going through, surgery.
Thank you soo much. This helped me a lot. I just got my tonsils out yesterday and boy is it rough. The tip about staying ahead of the pain is game changer because I'm really bad with pain.
Thank you for your in depth post op instructions and videos! I’m day 3 post op and really appreciate the info refresh!
when will the hyper salivation end ? I can’t even sleep or do anything with out having to spit every 3 seconds .... I’m on day 8 I have been like this for 3 days now ,,, thank you !
It's less that you are making saliva. It's more that we don't fully appreciate how much we normally swallow reflexively during the course of a normal day. And when your throat hurts after surgery, adn you don't as often, or as effectively, swallow through the course of the day, it all puddles and collects.
Nancy M I feel your pain on that I’ve had it for 2 days now and I’ve at least filled up a bottle with it absolutely horrible
Same. That's the worst part for me. Swallow ice, then having to spit
Yes I wake up and my pillow is COVERED in drool

@@Theelaceceo it wasn’t all that bad honestly, the first week i didn’t eat much, but slowly i started having popsicles and jello. By the end of my second week my diet was back to normal.

I can’t wait to have mine removed. I am tired and walking around like a zombie every single day from lack of good sleep.
You shouldnt eat or drink warm stuff
Shahana ----- why did you have a uvulalectomy ?
I’m in my second week post op

Day 1-3 pain is so high 10/10 when attempting to swallow, which makes taking the many medications very difficult. Didn’t even think about eating, just sleep when you can to ease the pain. Waking up with horrible taste in mouth and pain is even worse when waking up
Day 4 - admitted to hospital emergency as i was not taking in any fluids. Received an IV drip for dehydration
Day 5-7- feeling a little better, pain when swallowing is now around 6-7/10 but at this point I’ve already lost about 6kgs of body weight from not being able to eat/drink properly
Day 8 - admitted to hospital once more this time for hyperventilation and loss of balance. Once again received IV drip
Day 9-now (15) - pain has largely subsided but an even worse issue has been present; constant saliva production of the wound is spilling into my sinus and causing me to vomit on a daily basis which if you are like me and hate vomitting, it’s worse than the pain.
Ugh, watching these videos a couple days before my surgery is giving me so much anxiety. I'm scared of the pain making me dehydrated but I'm even more anxious about nausea. It's the worst
I did my surgery yesterday, what's your recovery process like?
Mine is next month and these comments have me cringing.😢
Thank you made my thought process a lot better, specially about the uvula.
And are not supposed to brush ? Or brush a tad bit?
Pro tips I've learned so far:
3. Matcha. Matcha is a type of green tea higly prized for its potent effects as a medicine for inflammatory illness, but it also boasts large amounts of epigallocatechin-3-gallate (EGCG)
www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/articles/PMC4082721/#:~:text=EGCG%20is%20the%20major%20catechin,obesity%20%5B4%2D6%5D.
So matcha is green tea that is powdered very finely so that you actually consume the whole tea leaf when you drink it. It takes very little powder to make a lot of tea.
My Matcha Method:
Cut about a tablespoon of mutter and melt in microwave..
Add matcha to plant milk
Add melted butter
Add a little sugar, honey of you have it. Remember, we're trying to make this 'pleasant' :)
Shake up your beverage quite well and serve over ice,
Enjoy knowing that you are packing an herbal and medicinal superpower to your immune system. I really hope this helps someone :)
I'm on day 6 and my experience is nowhere near as bad as some people have described.
1/ Start eating solid food from day 1
2/ Use ice packs for your neck and jaw
3/ Keep up with your medication
Concentrated list
1. Drink water
2. Stay away from ice cream
3. When attempting to swallow, let the water basically start going down your throat and then swallow (you’ll know what I mean when you can actually feel the pain)
4. Avoid taking a ton of medicine. I’d try once or twice a day and seeing if you can survive. Can always take more, can’t take less after the fact.
5. Sleep and if you cough or sneeze, make sure to immediately drink water.
I’m In the recovery phase right now. I threw up once but I think I was my medicine was making me nauseous and dizzy. Thank you fir the video man😎

So I literally just had my tonsils and adenoids out today, and I didn’t do any research prior because I have been so afraid of the side effects, so I guess now is the best time to check in and learn about it!
B I’m on day 10. Make sure you stay hydrated and stay on top of pain meds. You’ll be fine. 😊
A Baker thank you 💜💜
How are you doing today?
A Baker so much better! Pain is at mostly a 0-2 depending on the time of day, and I’m able to eat more/ different foods! Thanks for checking in 🥰
Another week down, how are you this week? I’m week three and I can finally eat what I want 😊
Do people get their tonsils removed due to tonsil stones? I haven’t had strep throat before but they cause difficulty swallowing, my doctor just gave me antibiotics but I’m getting so annoyed with the difficulty swallowing and bad breath. Do you think I can find a doctor who will preform it based solely on the tonsil stones?
cheyenne neighbors yes, my ent said tonsil stones that cause bad breath is enough of a reason to have this procedure done

this is why i got mine out!
@@MasterYourOwnDestiny I'd rather have bad breath then a tremendous pain for 3 weeks 😩😩 after seeing comment section dang I'll never going to have this removal treatment 🥺🥺

Appreciate the information doc. My kids both 4 and 7 years old had their tonsils and Addenoids removed a week ago. It's been rough! They have the yellow patches and really bad breath. Eating food has been a struggle too!
They’ve prescribed narcotics for me but I want to do Tylenol unless it’s bad. Is that okay?
Trust me you need something strong
Thank you so much
on day 2 morning the pain is pretty bad, day 1 night had to call 911 because how swollen my throat was and had made me choke on water 4 times that day and 1 time on my medicine. not looking forward to the next week or 2 😂🙏🏼✝️

Mine was a longer recovery. It took me 8 months to make a full recovery. I was 37 when i had mine removed. The first day of surgery i was great after that some how i contracted strep throat. I could not sleep or eat. I had no bleeding. I was serverly dehydrated i went to the e.r 4 times for iv treatment. I had my uvulas removed as well. Its been 2 years since surgery. Im doing very well. I took 8 months of work . When i went through my surgery
Did you have a dry throat feeling??
Nik why did you have your uvula removed too ?
Hi Gene, it's Jacques here. My wife had her tonsels removed because of bad breath. It was about a month ago. Her breath smells a bit different but still smells bad. Is it normal for her breath to still smell bad a month after the surgery before the bad breath goes away?
Did it go away? Was she getting tonsil stones?
Jaques, bad breath can be caused by a dry mouth... make sure she drinks a lot of liquids and eats the kind of candy that supposed to lubricate the mouth.... if she has teeth infections, that can cause bad breath too. have her go to a dentist

I suffer from migraines and now I’m on the 3rd day after the surgery and my head hurts so bad I can’t even sleep because of the pain😢 what can I do?
It really depends on how severe your migraines normally are and what you typically take for them, as well as what other medical conditions you have. You should ask your doctor for what you can take.

@@VIVIANANOROCEA I have lupus that's attacking my central nervous system and I have severe migraines almost weekly. Often leaving me in the bed for days. But, Frova 2mg is really a great medicine. If the meds aren't helping, try ice right at the back of your neck, where the top of your spine meets the base of your skull. Also, ask for phenegren suppositories. They'll help you fall asleep.

Swollen lymph nodes
Sore sinus glands
Struggle/difficulty breathing

Great video, Doc strait to the point. I am 3 days shy from my 2 weeks recovery time. All I can say is that it definitely gets worst before it gets better. It's a slow painful process. That's why for me it was very annoying. Sleepless nights, headaches, even though I did drink alot of fluids and did eat soft food, and took my opioid medicine very serious. I still had alot of misconfort. This surgery sucks but it's a times necessary. Good luck to the patients in the future.

How are you doing now? Hopefully no more bleeding and the pain improved. Some oral care products and toothpastes can be really uncomfortable. And you definitely don't want to bump the healing area with a toothbrush.

When does bad breath after tonsillectomy goes away?

Tabassum anika Do you remember for how many days you had the pain and how many days it took you to get back to normal?

Guurl , I had the same concern but ent suggested I get them done immediately since I couldn’t even breathe anymore , so I got mine removed about a week ago, I am now in full pain! How are you doing?
Just want to know...is the surgery worth it for sleep apnea?
This may seem like an straightforward question, it is actually very nuanced and complex. It depends on how bad the apnea is. It depends on the patient's individual anatomy. It depends on the overall health, anesthetic and surgical risk, and many other factors. For many people, surgery is absolutely worth it. And for others, it isn't.
you mentioned the Uvula swelling.. mine is already large (touches my tongue and still curls) and stays swollen will this make it harder to breathe after getting my tonsils out? my doctor has considered shortening it while taking my tonsils out but i have not heard much of this procedure
Most of the time, we leave the uvula alone. And there are other times that we snip or remove the uvula entirely for snoring or apnea.

Its been 12days after surgey..it bleeds sometimes..about 3 tablespoon of blood then stops after i chew ice chips
What's funny is that right now I'm going through similar symptoms but have not even gotten he surgery yet to to I assume tonsillitis messing with my ability to swallow. If post op is this level of pain I'm good, I can barely swallow and sleep but its not too bad
There are definitely people who get severe enough tonsil issues that the recovery from surgery is well worth it.

Hello Dr.
