I remember binge watching tonsillectomy videos before I got mine back in June. This was in my watch later lol. 6 months later and it was the best decision. No more reoccurring sore throats. No more tonsil stones and bad breath. I’m free!😂😂
To everyone that’s just had a tonsillectomy just like myself, we can do it, we are strong and even if swallowing our own saliva feels like swallowing a barrel, we are strong. I’m just excited to eat McDonald’s again 😂
@@sakariyeosman5079 it’s officially been 8 days and I’ve been back in hospital for 2… the pain is unbearable especially at night like rn and I’ve lost 5kg and where I lost that weight and wasn’t able to feed myself for 5 days they hospitalised me. I really hope you are pain free soon! 🤞🏼

Having tonsil stones is a blessing in disguise. I get to have my tonsils removed curing my bad breath, and then I have to go on a strict diet for a few weeks for recovery which will help with my poor diet and my exercise routine so I can lose weight. Life hands you lemons. Make lemonade i guess.
@v if tonsil stones aren't giving you major problems then DON'T get them removed. After my surgery I was in too much pain. I didn't eat anything for 3 weeks . I couldn't drink water or nothin. I lost about 35 pounds. I was depressed for about a week. Worst thing I ever went through. And to top it off. Tonsil stones wasn't the only problem giving me bad breath. It has something to do with my digestive system so I take probiotics and that helps
@v lol you're still feeling the numbing medicine they give you. When you go home starting tomorrow just be prepared and always know that pain is temporary. Don't lose your mind through the process
When I had my tonsils removed, I ate pudding, Jell-O, lukewarm (not hot) soup, lukewarm mashed potatoes, and ice cream (occasionally). I drank water like it was a miracle cure. To be honest, the recovery wasn’t as bad as I thought it would be. Of course my experience wouldn’t be the same as someone else’s. Every person is different. The only time I suffered was at night because I didn’t have a humidifier to make my breathing easier. If you are getting your tonsils removed, have a humidifier nearby for nighttime. The pain does get worse at night because you’re laying down. Other than that, the recovery should be smooth sailing.
@Kafilat Amuda the cold water helped. If there was pain or if I ate something that hurt my throat. Is ibuprofen an option? The pain from the ears went away after 10 days.
@@genna_analogsorry for the late response I just got my surgery today and they said taking any medication with aspirin is bad because it could make ur throat bleed bad
@@lewismacias8847 who you telling. My mom has a 2 year old and couldn’t be in the room with me so naturally I woke up crying for her and pitched a fit when I couldn’t find her😂
Guys don't be afraid to do the surgery, It's really worth it after all! Just don't eat solid things in just 2 weeks and your throat will be healthy than ever! I removed mine last week , And I am not doing good, but i'm faithful it will be worth it in just 1 more week.
Gene Liu, MD, MMM my mouth is stinky every tame is that why or if I open my mouth I can’t see something but I know that some wrong with my mouth it’s not my teeth I think it’s in my throat?
If you look at the mirror, You just see white at the back of your throat, That makes it stinky because of the foods smell or something, Don't worry after a while it will begin to vanish, And your moth wont be stinky anymore. Happened with me.
Update: I was in extreme pain, specially when the doctors don’t give anyone pain medication anymore. I got severely dehydrated and develop blood clots in my throat. I couldn’t eat for about 3 weeks because the blood clots set me back. I went from 120 pounds to 97 pounds because of this surgery. But I do not regret it at the end of all this because I don’t get sick anymore, I can breathe better now, no more snoring and I look good 💁🏻♀️.
Hi there 😍the Dr said I shd wait for 6 months bt it's 3 months nw and it's coming back I can nw taste tea, fruits except meat bt it's so much better nw so I guess tht Dr was right....
You need to use an ice collar, ice chips and lidocaine lollipops and then eat. World of difference if you do those three steps before eating. Let me guess, your surgical care team never properly prepped you with the appropriate post operative care that is required, right? So many little tips and tricks after this surgery that can either make it bearable or turn it into a nightmare.
@@sophierodriguez2851 You need to ask your doctor for a prescription for Tetracaine lollipops. Get it over to a compounding pharmacy and have them make you some. Dilute it in a quarter cup of water, drink that, it will give you about 30-40 minutes of numbing relief to drink some water and get some soft food down. Example: clearspringrx.com/blog/tetracaine-lollipops/
@@monbhujel7236 Yes. I’m sure I had bad breath. I had very big and ugly scabs in my mouth. That’s okay. It will all clear up after some time (10 - 15 days or so). Hang in there!
I was told to eat toast same day as the surgery. It hurt like hell but I was told it helps clear the gunk. I was also told to stay well away from dairy. Day 3. In agony. Let's get through this!
As someone who just had it done this is no joke. Listen to the good doctor. My problem was anything sweet like ice cream, and popsicle would cause a thick gooey philm build to up. Sucking on ice chips and spitting out the philm helped as well. It’s going to be tough and I’m not going the lie the pain is horrendous but take the meds on schedule and keep drinking the fluids.
33 years old at day 5 after tonsilectomy. Besides the fact i feel like I'm swallowing a bunch of thumb tacks everytime i swallow my own saliva, I get terrible headaches throughout the day. I could barely speak right after surgery but I got through eating plain vanilla ice cream and bread 12 hours after surgery. I only allowed myself to be discharged from the hospital at day 3 and throughout the time I was on I.V and paracetamol as pain killers. Day 4 and day 5 is when I'm attacked with terrible headache and pain in the throat, I was mainly on some gargling liquid and deflam for the throat, no pain killers. I forced myself with some spiced porridge (hurts after), fishball soup (best choice with zero pain and some chewing exercise), chocolate sundae (routine from day 2 onwards, chocolate helps improve appetite and sorta coats the throat for more solid food afterwards like bread making swallowing more bearable, I find chocolate drink to work just aswell). Today my headache got so bad I took some paracetamol and within minutes I felt a whole lot better. No more headaches and much more bearable pain at the throat. Some positives after day 5, I start noticing everytime I was my mouth( like gargling with tap water and brushing without toothpaste), scabs start to come off. The more I wash off the scabs, I notice I can open my mouth bigger and feel my jaws alittle bit more relaxed after, talking gets better as well. Other positives to note, my sleep quality is alot better as I feel I get enough oxygen into my body when I sleep (no more sleep apnea and I actually get my REM sleep). I'm back to light workouts (chinups only but I keep it before I reached my push limit). In a nutshell, take ice cream before any solids to numb the throat, wash your mouth all the time, talk less and take some panels if you gave bad headaches. Hope this helps
I’m on day 10 after my tonsillectomy in the U.K. - over here the latest best practice for post-surgery diet is simply to resume normal eating as soon as you wake up. On day 1 the doctor and nurses had me eating a tuna sandwich - literally 2 hours after I woke up from surgery. I had toast for breakfast on the morning of day 2. And yeah it hurt like hell! But I ate normal foods this last week and a half…. The scabs in my throat are being sloughed away quite fast. Agonising but I’m recovering really quickly, with no bleeding so far!
I'm on recovery day 4 going on 5 I can eat soft foods and drinking is ok water is good lost 9 pounds in 4 days due to not eating I guess can happen.... pain medication works wonders
Had my tonsils removed as well as other tissue in my throat and nose. Recovery is tough. It’s been a week now. Starting to be able to eat some foods and drink liquids without much difficulty. Thank you for this information. It has been really helpful
Honestly, the soar throat does not hurt that much, currently i eat very, and i mean very little amount of food a day, but thats just me, taking medication helps a lot, dont be afraid to take it, i did not talk for about 3 days, and thats what the doctors told me, and may tell you, but even chewing hurts, but, like we all say, we can push through, and just hang in there! Edit: also the 4-5 day is supposed to be the worst, the doctors say.
And one more thing, if you cannot take the pain , something that really helped me was asking my doctor to prescribe me prednisone (a steroid to reduce swelling). That has helped me tremendously because my pain was a 10/10 for a while. I promise it makes it a lot better.
Agreed, I’m in my early 30s and from day 3 post tonsillectomy my throat pain radiating to my ears started worsening. This is psychologically very difficult, because you think you should be improving but peak at day 3-5; today on day 6 I decided to see my doctor and he prescribed IV dexamethasone and acetaminophen because I just couldn’t handle the pain or tolerate oral intake. The steroids helped SO much in relieving the pain. Hoping it’s a smooth recovery from here.
I’m about two weeks after my tonsil it to me and honestly it was pretty easy. I didn’t really eat anything cold but I just drunk a lot of water and eat hard food. The only days that it was immense pain was about day 7 to 8 and it healed in about 11 days.
I had my tonsilectomy surgery 12 days ago (2nd of July). I was very strict with my hydration, drinking somewhere between 3-6 litres a day. I worried that it was too much, but I REALLY like water! I would set alarms every 2-3 hours throughout the night to re-hydrate. Those were some of the worst times because it felt like drinking acid, but I forced myself to stick with it. I was told to eat a semi normal diet from the very beginning. My favourite foods were toast with butter and soft veggie based foods. For me, worst part was the ear ache, but I found the best relief was to eat. The oxycodon didn't seem to help the ears, but it would numb my throat well enough to tolerate food. As a result, I only lost 1kg (2ish pounds) in weight. I think I have been quite lucky, but discipline seems to have been the key. At 28 years old, I no longer snore, and actually need less sleep for the first time ever :).
@@mer5826 its the first day that its fine again!! Pain started after day 3/4. Day 5-6-7 were heavy with nearly no food and many pain drugs aprox 3h apart. 9 days later now it feels as good as over. Pain maybe 15% left from peak! Good luck to you! 💪
Outstanding and informative video! You have a relaxing and calming voice! ASMR-like!! 👍👍 I had mine removed at 34 due to chronic strep and a chronic abscessed tonsil that required draining (always the left tonsil - that pain was always excruciating). My recovery was very tough as my dr had to remove more tissue than usual due to lots of scar tissue due to my chronically abscessed tonsil. I can’t reiterate enough as to how important staying hydrated was for me. I literally kept bottles and bottles of water on both night stands and forced myself to drink water, despite the intense pain. Hydrocodone didn’t touch my pain. I couldn’t eat either, but forcing the liquids helped in the long run. Also, my dr at the time suggested chewing chewing gum as a way to both stimulate saliva (which stimulated swallowing sensations to aid in recovery) and it also helped relax my tense jaw muscles. You rarely see this suggestion, but I always tell others! 😀. Chew gum!! It helps👍👍. Also, as others have stated, while the recovery was tough me for, I don’t regret it at all!! My life has been so much better having very few throat problems after the surgery. I should have done it sooner.
Day 5 after radical tonsillectomy and probably the worst so far - pain meds can hold it down but eating is so painful and feels like food gets stuck and then causes incredible pressure and discomfort - literally so painful I can't handle eating - really hoping this is going to get easier
The surgery is totally worth it. I'm going through recovery now. I had also had a deviated septum and turbinates trimmed/reduction at the same time so I had a double punch. What they don't tell you is the swollen uvula. That really affects the ability to sleep laying down or even sitting up. You're sleeping for a week more like hunched over because the swollen uvula can cause airway compromise and result in you choking in your sleep and waking up in a panic attack. I think I have about only 10 mm range of movement in my head where there is the perfect spot where I can also exhale without the uvula bothering me.
Packetattack yes I’m going through the same thing and I swear that uvula is preventing me from sleeping. I just found out if I sleep on my side I can breathe normal but if i try any other position I can breathe. I’m on day 6 recovery
@@Tousanx Day 10 recovery and my surgeon said it could be another 2 weeks till the uvula fully decreases in size. That's really the worst part of the surgery. I did fine with the liquid diet etc. And I've been off the Percocets for 48+ hours now.
I’m on day 8 and yea the swollen uvula rlly sucks smh have to sleep upright still .. felt like a gummy word getting stuck in my grist when u tried to sleep on my back🤒
Im day 12 post op. Hurts in the morning but I’m okay for the most part. I don’t like eating anything cold anymore. For me, the ear pain is what hurt the most throughout day 1-6. I dropped 10lbs the first week for lack of eating. I ate bread with tomato soup yesterday so I’m getting somewhere as far as solids go.
I'm 46 and I had them removed 3 weeks ago plus I had an my adenoids shave down. It wasn't as bad as I thought, heard, watched, or read. I had oxy with tylenol combo for pain, some magic syrup to numb my throat. If I took the pain meds every 4 hours or 6, I had little to no pain only discomfort. I really just drank Glucerna and drinkable yogurt for 4 days after surgery and room temperature water. The ice cold water, popsicles, ice chips made me feel worse. Week 3 and a couple of days I just feel some discomfort with certain foods like peanut butter it gets stuck and I have to drink something to wash it down. I stopped taking the pain meds about a week after surgery. My doctor gave me Prednisone liquid, a steroid for swelling. That was the worst the liquid tasted horrible, get the tablet it's small and doesn't hurt. All and all I'm happy I did it. Having chronic tonsillitis was so bad to the point that I went to emergency 3 times in one day I also had a panic attack the 2nd time, it felt like I was drowning in saliva and I started vomiting I could not keep fluids down at all. They kept sending me home with antibiotics until the 3rd emergency room doctor gave me prednisone.

Man. I just got my tonsils and adenoids removed on the 9th of this month… Also had a turbinate reduction the same day as well. This video helps out sooo much because I literally feel my body getting weak, as I couldn’t eat the day before the surgery and these first 4 days of recovery been harshly painful. The cold water bottles just been running through me 😭😭😭 I can barely open my mouth or move my tongue around as much. Not to mention to horrible horse sounding voice I currently have. Anyways , thank for the video Doc ! 🥲
Dude i had all that done as well too. I needed a second surgery because the area of healing ripped or something and I was coughing up blood from the area. It got so bad that I started throwing up blood clots the size of slugs. Now that they have done the cauterization my healing process is backed up another 3 weeks. I'm so fucking miserable.
Day 9 and I'm still on protein shake (premier protein) and ice water and ice (sonic). Around day 4 or 5 i started drinking warm bone broth with real butter to get some nutrients. Ate a lot of ice the first 4 or 5 days. The tetracaine suckers help. Yogurt is still too thick. If you are on vicodin, be sure to take muralax on a daily basis. I had really bad constipation from lack of fats in my diet and drinking only shakes.
i got my tonsils out yesterday and honestly, i’m feeling a lot better than i thought i would. drinking gatorade and apple sauce help A LOT and definitely keeping up with liquid medicine that they give you, and liquid pain killers. keep drinking liquids!! they will be a live saver and in the end will make your live so much better!! just keep thinking about all the solid food you can eat at the end of recovery 🤩😃
Thank you so much for this information! I just got my tonsils removed today. Thankfully the medicine is working and it seems I am a fast healer. I'm taking my time and sticking to fluids + baby food. I am counting down the days to eat solids again!
Very helpful. My 12 yr old daughter's been diagnosed with quinsy and currently on iv antibiotics. Hopefully she will get better but doctor told us about aspiration, incision and finally tonsillectomy. Hoping for a quick uncomplicated recovery.
I’m on day 4 and the pain is terrible. So glad my doc gave me pain meds. I coughed up a staple yesterday surrounded by a scab so my f/u is 7 days instead of 14.
Hi Gene i had my tonsils removed last month (November 15th) for the first 8 days the pain was unbearable i couldn’t eat or drink or swallow properly or even sleep. On the 8th night i had a bleed and was rushed to hospital by ambulance after calling the ENT ward they recommended to call 999, the hospital kept me in for 3 days and the 2nd day i had another really bad bleed worst than the first time which lasted an hour with really huge clots coming up every 10 minutes, a surgeon came in and rushed me straight to surgery after looking in my throat mid bleed and said “this is a mess”. I had my throat re-cauterised on November 24th and the next morning in hospital was completely back to normal no pain and eating drinking and swallowing fine for the first time in 9 days. Now my scabs have come off and pretty much healed, i have seen that there’s still large fragments of my tonsils left on my right side but my left side is perfect. Can my tonsil grow back overtime due to this?
Sorry to hear that you had such a tough recovery. This should not affect whether or not you have any remaining tonsil tissue or if any grows back. It really depends on what type of tonsil procedure you had...tonsillectomy = remove the entire tonsil, or tonsillotomy = remove most of the tonsil. You can check with your surgeon re: which was performed.
Hey guys. Just got mine 3 days ago. Best decision of my life. In pain but I can breathe again. I had: Tonsillectomy, Adenoidectomy, Septoplasty, and Turbinate reduction.
I'm 27, and I'm going for my pre-op for my tonsillectomy on the 31st. I'll most likely have the surgery a few days after. Watching these videos, so I can buy some things ahead of time the next time I go grocery shopping.
It's already my day 5, the inside of my ear hurts like hell and I can't even drink anything... swallowing even my saliva hurts so much...I don't wanna eat even though I'm really hungry
Day 4 after removal of tonsils. Not yet had any painkillers (my choice, although I'm expecting to take them around day 7 if the pain is as really bad as they say). I'm making sure I'm drinking lot's of water. And yes it's uncomfortable, but no pain no gain. And it helps with the healing progress. Living off frozen yoghurt, frozen bananas, frozen grapes and of course ice cream. It does hurt to do these things, but the pain will be 10 fold if you don't and you dehydrate. Good luck to all those having it done or going through recovery. You've got this xx
It's my day 2. Swallowing is so difficult, my ears hurt with the pain and I wake up because of the pain. I'm so glad I came across your comment. I'm going to start drinking water.
Day 6 post op and I regret everything. I should have never gotten this operation. Water feels like razors and acid if it can even get past my tongue. My whole face and neck are locked up in aching pain. I have to pry open my jaw with both hands just to sip. Both ears hurt worse than any ear infection I've ever had. They gave me less than a 5 day supply of hydrocodone, not that it was strong enough to help anyways (liquid hydrocodone touching the scar area is the worst pain I've felt since I had a heart infection). So Tylenol and throat spray are all I have, and those don't feel any better than a placebo. Plus the spray tastes like formaldehyde. Don't get me started on the hiccups and coughing. I can't talk. I can't scream. The only thing I can do is cry.
@@nonamenoname448 I regret it still. It wasn't worth it. I can't breathe without choking on my saliva. It got even worse after I posted this message last year. By day 12 I was far past ready to end it all. To be fair, I was unlucky
I’m having mine out in 12 hours. I’m apprehensive about the surgery and recovery, but looking forward to a healthier throat and fewer days of work that I have to call out sick.
Throat pain and grogginess. But it's not the word throat pain I've ever had. I kinda just wish I could sleep through the recovery and not have to worry about meds and feeding myself
@@indieh9 I live alone so I can relate to those worries. I'm going to get tests tomorrow so I'm right behind you. It's going to be so worth it in the end! Keep us posted! :)
Hi, I just removed my tonsils the day before yesterday in Afghanistan, and the surgeon did an outstanding job. I still have some issues swallowing, but my main course of food is fudding, firni, milk and started to take some fresh fruit juice. Hopefully, it does not bother me after a while. However, I was in the hell last night from it which was very dry and painful.
Seriously a lifesaver. I just had my tonsils removed 6 days ago and I am in absolute hell, can't swallow or talk, nothing and have ear ache. Since the surgery I've been getting hiccups a lot. Someone advised that I should close my nose and then try to drink water at the same time. I try it and noticed that I can swallow better with 50% less pain. I immediately started eating a bit and drank water because I was so dehydrated at that point and I held my nose like that for 20 minutes just to get a break from the pain, even after releasing my nose, swallowing was much better for the next 30 min. I am not a doctor so I can't say at all why this maybe works but I advise that some of you maybe try it. No harm in trying. Ps. Does not really work for hiccups tho, only sometimes🤣
This is funny because after my tonsillectomy whenever I used to drink water(which used to pain like ANYTHING) it would go to my nose for some reason and doctor said this can happen after surgery for few weeks, but I found a trick that if drink with my nose pinched then the water won't go into my nose anymore while drinking.
My 8 year old had her tonsils out. We are on day 4 of recovery. So far so good. Better than I thought. She is doing great! Tylenol, soft foods and popcycles. 🥰
I'm so glad she is recovering well and it's great that you got it done when she's young. I just got mine yesterday. I'm on day 2 of recovery and it is really difficult. Swallowing is a task. I wake up suddenly due to pain and can't sleep well. I can't wait for 3 weeks to end. Blessings for your lil one ❤️
@@thegorgeousgeek hope you feel better asap. We knew eventually she would need them out. They were so large since she was a toddler and she got strept throat. Feel better soon 💞
@@thegorgeousgeek I forgot to mention she is on 7 days of antibiotics just in case And we use a humidifier in the bedroom while she is asleep so the air is not so dry. She is on day 7 and she complained about her throat burning today so I gave her Tylenol. The doctor is only allowing Tylenol.
I was in the hospital for 2 weeks because my wound got infected after they took my tonsils out. I couldn't eat anything for 4-5 days. I was only able to drink water (this did hurt as well) and eat vanilla ice cream in tiny bits... I think i couldn't really eat for 4-6 weeks. Couldn't eat salt & my main dish was vanilla ice cream, vanilla pudding & mash potatos without salt 😭 To this day (5 years later) i get sick to my somach if i even see vanilla ice cream. Haha!! But i am so happy now. I never had tonsilitis ever again and i'm almost never sick! Plus i can finally breathe and take pills without being scared to suffocate
Day 5 post surgery: 22 years old, still hurts when I first wake up, after pain meds I’m pretty good to gingerly eat soft things. Mainly been eating popsicles and ice cream and sleeping all the time. I’m starving 24/7 lol and have lost some weight. The gyms gonna be rough when I get back into it
Cold liquids / food sent the pain level to a 15 for me.. luke warm room temp water worked better .. even the liquid pain med sent it into a painful swallow ... if you could just put people in a 9 day coma .. that would be the best
I’ve have had the absolute worst tonsillectomy, Technically day 12 but I’ve been back to the OR 3 times after the initial tonsillectomy so I’ve had 3 re cauterizations, I’m day 3 after restarting my healing process I’ve had to deal with constant re bleeding, I’m now on a clotting acid even though hematology tested me for multiple blood clotting disorders or bleeding problems so I’m praying after 4 surgery’s I have no more bleeding and I can actually heal this has been absolute HELL for me.
Kelly Borup i was too! it was completely awful. Dairy free icecream was my go to! i took one bite of pudding and i felt like i was suffocating with mucous for days and i felt like drinking water made it worse so i had to spit
Kelly is here. Idk if I’ll have that problem but I’m scared to try to see! I don’t have a fair problem but rn my spit/saliva feels thicker but it’s saliva
Jacob Thompson when did you get yours removed? Recently or like a week ago? I got mine 4 days ago if a week or more could u drink fizzy drinks such as coke,dr. Pepper, sprite, sparkling water?
Elizabeth.its been over a month now. But during the recovery I did not drink any soda only water and Gatorade. I read that you can drink soda but I don’t see how? When I got my wisdom teeth out the forbid me to drink any soda??? Well now that I’m better I don’t even enjoy soda anymore
I’m on Day 6 & today is the only day that I didn’t want to die. Yesterday was HORRIBLE. I cried and all…I wouldn’t recommend waiting until 35 to do this!
I’m vegan so I’ve been having coconut ice cream which is WAY better for you anyways! Of course I’m in awful pain, but it’s not much worse than what I’m used to when I used to get strep throat. It’s honestly worth it! This is my 4th day of healing & I’m still in pain of course but I am making sure to drink water. If you guys can’t eat anything like me, try drinking non dairy (or vegan) protein drinks! I’m normally 130, now down to 120 and might lose more weight ): But as long as you get your calories up & are drinking water & resting you should be okay. Also using nasal spray to keep everything moist, I’ve noticed I sleep with my mouth open now so it can get dry easily so I keep a humidifier in my room too. Best of luck to those who are still looking to get the procedure done or who are healing along with me!
Gene Liu, MD, MMM wow, thank you! That’s so nice of you to comment back. I’m doing good, taking it easy I don’t want to go backwards with my recovery. Thanks for a great video! (:
I just got mine out about 5 days ago and it really hurts and emotional but I am feeling better and better everyday and know I am looking at video so I know when I can eat chick fla chicken sandwich and Popeyes chicken sandwich so yeah 😂
Thank you very much for what you have said. I go in to have a tonsil taken out in a couple days. My doctor said the same thing you are saying but he did not explain it like you have explained it and I really do appreciate that.
I breezed through it all. I did not find it painful at all. I drank cranberry juice, fruit punch, hello, applesauce, mac and cheese. I drank a 30 pack of water plus juices, lukewarm tea and a ton of popsicles all flavors. I really did not have any problems my surgeon was very impressed.
I’m here in recovery with my daughter and she hates it …in absolute pain.. and then the other kids I hear crying breaks my heart… but I know this will help all the ailments that she currently have.
I had my tonsils removed two weeks ago and I have a disgusting taste when it comes to sweets but other foods have a dull or metallic taste? How long will this last or what can I do to fix it?
Two weeks ago is still well within the healing process. The open, raw areas can take up to 3 weeks to really heal. The alterations in taste can happen from a long list of possible explanations. Most resolve in the first few weeks, but it's also possible that some of the issues linger for weeks longer. That having been said, it almost always resolves relatively quickly. There's usually not much to be done other than be patient. Definitely call your doctor, though, for what they would recommend as I can only give general information and you may have particular nuances to your individual case.
Hey Doc. Greetings from south of Brazil. I'm getting them removed this Friday. Thanks for the tips and I'll comeback to tell you how it went. Thank you, sir.
I'm on the night of day 5 and holy crap is this the worst pain I've ever been in in my life. I scream when I take my pain meds and I have lost 10lbs in 5 days. This is literally the worst experience of my life and I wouldn't wish it on even my worst enemy. I feel weak and I am in a ton of pain. It is worse than literally getting stabbed (I've been stabbed in the hand with a huge kitchen knife before and that is not too pleasant either.)
This is an interesting an informative video. Been working two years in an ear nose throat ward as a nurse, and I removed my tonsils three days ago. I thought I knew most of the information and precautions to take, but I have been mistanken. Yesterday I tried tomato soup with melted cheese. Didnt turn out so good, haha. I have eaten lots of yoghurt, soups, porridge, and mashed potatoes. The pain has actually been incereased each day, and now om day four I feel that its om its peek. Tomorrow i will try to eat meatballs, eggs and macaroni. Regarding the pain it isnt worse than my previous tonsilitts, tbh.
Honestly that's how my pain is, I had mine yesterday morning. And when I got home ate warm mashed potatoes and gravy with almost no issues. Since then I've had potato soup and bunch of water. It hurts like a sore throat but I've gotten by without taking any of the hydrocodne they game me. I'm tmjust taking liquid tylenol and it hasn't been that bad
I had my tonsillectomy on 30th December 2019 and today is January 1st 2020. I started speaking immediately when I woke up from general anesthesia and I can already drink and eat soft and liquid food. I think I’m doing pretty well and I’m hoping for a speedy recovery :)
I had mine 2 weeks ago. Didn't eat for 8 days. Didn't drink anything for 3. Couldn't even swallow my spit. Pain killers Inc tramadol did feck all to help. I'm still not 100% now but at least I can eat again
I’m on my 6th day post surgery recovery and it is very painful to swallow first thing in the morning.. I’m having issues with the buildup of applesauce in the back of my throat and I’m not too sure how to remove it without causing any bleeding or having the scabs come off early:( It has been very painful so far, but I believe I’m at the turning point now and it can only get better from this point out!
I literally haven't eaten in like 5 days and i dont know what to do, the only thing I eat is Ice and even that hurts. Popsicles and Ice Cream make my phlegm thinker, so does jello. Soup gets stuck in my throat and is about impossible to swallow. I know that me barely eating would be bad for recovery but i dont know what to do 😭
Sprite Slurpee, jello, orange sorbet, water, pudding, lukewarm mashed potatoes, rocket pops, baby food, apple sauce and lukewarm sodium free broth is what I had lived during my post tonsillectomy. Yes it is hurt to eat. It was back in 2000.
I am in my 4th day and i feel horrible + no one speak about the sudden electric shocks like in the neck that make u cough like crazy I don’t know how to deal with it
Today is the 8th day since i got my tonsils and adenoids removed. First day i felt like dying but i'm doing really well now and can eat semi solid food too. I believe it was my best decision yet.
So for me cold was absolute hell I couldn't even drink room temp water I couldn't eat any thing cold like applesauce or really anything for the first 3 days and on the 7.5 day(now) I'm eating basically normal food like sandwiches and stuff now my throat only really bothers me when I don't swallow for a while and it's gets dry and after I wake up it's pretty bad but then I'm fine in 20-30 mins but I only ate and drank hot stuff like coffee and soups like miso and egg drop soup the only semi cold thing I can bare was pudding and I think that's because it covers my throats and I was fine with things like grits that had pepper in it but one thing I can not stand is chocolate and I don't know why like I got a milk shake and I let it warm up enough to where I could drink it but chocolate burned so bad and I have no idea why (16 400lbs tonsils and adenoids removed for sleep apnea) and I've lost like 20lbs so I guess this is a good start
I would not advocate or recommend this. Yes, things may work out fine, but I would be surprised if any ENT is happy about that plan. Just because you can do something, does not always mean that you should. Good luck!
I'm on day 5 and I had a sandwich (most of it- it started to hurt towards the end). Yesterday, I had half a slice of pizza and some cake. As long as I drink a lot of water with it and chew it really small, I'm not having any difficulty. Granted, I have heavy duty pain killers, but I'm really not feeling very bad at all. My constant body aches and fatigue are gone (i'm tired and sore from surgery, but that is explainable). I actually feel so much better than I did before surgery. I had my tonsils removed for tonsil stones, but they turned out to be extremely infected according to the pathology report. Guess I was just used to the pain. I think it was a great move and to those preparing for surgery- you may get lucky and have things go like my surgery. (When they woke me up, I remember talking about how spacious things were in my mouth- and I still find it to be true. This is going to be life changing!) I have a special needs kid who can't handle changes to his routine, so I was up taking him to his activities a day later. I am more tired and weak, but I just sleep when he is at school and crash at night.
Noodle soups have been my go to! Soft noodles easy to slurp down and a nice nutritious vege broth, let it cool down to room temperature! Food + Hydration 💪 Shoutout to all the tonsillectomy warriors getting through the tough times, drink that water!
Thanks Doc I am just getting mine taken out at 35 and I feel horrible. Girts sound good I never thought of that but of course I would like mine hot. I even bought a blender by Halmition Beach boy have I been play it does nothing like what i expected, so I will be returning it as soon as I get well.
I remember binge watching tonsillectomy videos before I got mine back in June. This was in my watch later lol. 6 months later and it was the best decision. No more reoccurring sore throats. No more tonsil stones and bad breath. I’m free!😂😂

@v yeah that helps. Even tho it hurts like hell to drink anything but you have to force it. I suggest a lot of popsicles
How long did it take for u to talk without it hurting
Thank you. For the idea of using humidifier at night. This was never suggested in after care. 😊
I had mine on Friday, should I stop taking cold water? Oh my ear.is paining
@Kafilat Amuda the cold water helped. If there was pain or if I ate something that hurt my throat. Is ibuprofen an option? The pain from the ears went away after 10 days.

My daughter had hers a few days ago. And when he says tough recovery, believe me, be ready. My daughter has been in pain for days. Breaks my heart.
8-9 days after my tonsillectomy! So happy to be able to eat solid foods again. Hang in there guys!

@@ImLuckyB how are you?
Does it feels empty or liquid moves on it the gap gap first n then on throat??
I think i am not controlling my swallowing
How do you feel?
Hi ..My surgery scheduled on 16 th May .. plz share some tips .. I’m freaking out
I had my tonsilectomy surgery 12 days ago (2nd of July).
I'm glad to hear you benefitted from the procedure. Short term misery for long term gain.

Hi so mind if you tell me when it started to get easier? And overall the whole experience?
I’m getting my tonsils out on June 22, 22. The video has prepared me!!

What did you eat? What was given for pain?

This is my saMe situtation.. wat to do?
@@falakshahid3318 it's okay, it will get better in few days, it took me 2 weeks personally
@@falakshahid3318 for now only eat liquid stuff like soup and avoid solid food
Heyy,What was your age at the time you got your tonsils out ?
@@syedadanmehdi3790 I was at the last stage of 17
Day 4 after removal of tonsils.
All the best for your recovery 🙏❤️
I was literally having wicked anxiety and panic attack’s before I started watching all your videos on tonsillitis😁😁
My six year old made me subscribe, because he says you're brilliant. He just had a tonsillectomy and adenoidectomy this morning.
I just got my surgery done 4days back n drinking water also stings I just misss feeling normal in my throat
I just finish my surgery and im under recovery , hope everythink will get well . Al hamdulilah 🤲
I've read so many horrible recoveries but this one was a real ride. Curious to know, 1 year on would you do it again for better health?
@@nonamenoname448 I regret it still. It wasn't worth it. I can't breathe without choking on my saliva. It got even worse after I posted this message last year. By day 12 I was far past ready to end it all.
To be fair, I was unlucky
So i just got mine yesterday and it truly is painful swallowing food. So im sticking to icecream for 2-3 weeks. Thanks for the video!
I’m having mine out in 12 hours. I’m apprehensive about the surgery and recovery, but looking forward to a healthier throat and fewer days of work that I have to call out sick.
How you holding up?
Hiccups are a magnesium deficiency! Probably from not eating.. magnesium depleted .. your body is or was telling you !
@@angiep10 thanks a bunch 🙌
@@thegorgeousgeek I forgot to mention she is on 7 days of antibiotics just in case
And we use a humidifier in the bedroom while she is asleep so the air is not so dry.
She is on day 7 and she complained about her throat burning today so I gave her Tylenol. The doctor is only allowing Tylenol.
My ears are what hurts the most
Omg yes
Same and head
same! I’m on day 11 today n it only my ears hurt when I swallow and it absolutely sucks. Any tips for the pain? :(
When i woke up after that i couldn't even hear
The gyms gonna be rough when I get back into it
Hopefully you're almost back to normal
Great info Doc. My child goes in tomorrow. This is super informative and helpful.
Cold liquids / food sent the pain level to a 15 for me.. luke warm room temp water worked better .. even the liquid pain med sent it into a painful swallow ... if you could just put people in a 9 day coma .. that would be the best
Best idea….. self induced coma
I’m one of the people who gets thicker mucous from dairy 😖 why is that for some people it happens that way?
Kelly Borup i was too! it was completely awful. Dairy free icecream was my go to! i took one bite of pudding and i felt like i was suffocating with mucous for days and i felt like drinking water made it worse so i had to spit
Kelly is here. Idk if I’ll have that problem but I’m scared to try to see! I don’t have a fair problem but rn my spit/saliva feels thicker but it’s saliva
@@em20231 uh, the spitting is the worst part for me!!!
I waited to over 50 🤦🏽♀️. This is a whole mess
Dr. Liu, what do you typically recommend to help with constipation from the pain meds?
In general, making sure you are well hydrated (drink plenty of fluids) and taking over-the-counter stool softeners such as colace may be sufficient.
Gene Liu, MD, MMM thank you.
I’m normally 130, now down to 120 and might lose more weight ):
But as long as you get your calories up & are drinking water & resting you should be okay. Also using nasal spray to keep everything moist, I’ve noticed I sleep with my mouth open now so it can get dry easily so I keep a humidifier in my room too. Best of luck to those who are still looking to get the procedure done or who are healing along with me!
Keep it up! You should be rounding the corner any day now for the easier part of the recovery process.
How are you now u are on day 7 right and pls explain me about pain.. I'm getting coblation tonsillectomy
Great! Every once in a while, someone has a recovery like yours. Most people, unfortunately, have a much more difficult time.
Lucky...
Best of luck to you, too, it is scary in the beginning, but will definitely be worth it. 👍🏻
your so nice to have don this!
I’m here in recovery with my daughter and she hates it …in absolute pain.. and then the other kids I hear crying breaks my heart… but I know this will help all the ailments that she currently have.
thanks for all the info! got mine out today
How are you holding up? Hopefully you are turning the corner...
Very helpful! Thank you! I got mine out 3 days ago. So far so good thank heavens. I got septorhinoplasty as well as tonsillectomy 😅
I know I’m 2 years late, but how’d it go? Seen any improvements?
Cleopatra Selene I’m getting my tonsillectomy in a few weeks I’m scared
Thanks so much. My daughter is getting hers removed tomorrow. Valuable information.
How’s she doing? Is she currently okay?
@@yungrydr Yes she is doing great. Day 5-7 were the hardest. She had to take liquid Motrin that worked best. Thanks so much for asking. Blessings!
"avoid dairy"
*me even though Im a lactose in tolerant*
oh this is gonna be hard
Ikr I'm allergic to milk entirely 🤣
You're almost at the turning point. Hang in there! Improvement is just around the corner.
Thank you for this video! I’ll be having my tonsils removed in a month. Im extremely worried about the pain and postoperative bleeding as I’m 38.
I removed mines 4 days ago ...I'm still worried about the bleeding even though I haven't bled so far
I literally haven't eaten in like 5 days and i dont know what to do, the only thing I eat is Ice and even that hurts. Popsicles and Ice Cream make my phlegm thinker, so does jello. Soup gets stuck in my throat and is about impossible to swallow. I know that me barely eating would be bad for recovery but i dont know what to do 😭
Unfortunately, They really should have prescribed you stong pain medicine that would have helped with that
Sprite Slurpee, jello, orange sorbet, water, pudding, lukewarm mashed potatoes, rocket pops, baby food, apple sauce and lukewarm sodium free broth is what I had lived during my post tonsillectomy. Yes it is hurt to eat. It was back in 2000.
I am in my 4th day and i feel horrible + no one speak about the sudden electric shocks like in the neck that make u cough like crazy I don’t know how to deal with it
Me too
Hopefully you're out of the woods now and doing ok?
Gene Liu, MD, MMM i am three weeks now ifeel much much better but it was hell journey, thanks dr
Have a nice day Doc.ahm What are the fruits that Available to eat after a tonsilectomy surgery except for ice cream??
Avoid fruits high in acid or red ones, banana is the best option and if you can tolerate dairy then drink shakes of milk, ice cream and banana.
About 5 or 6 hours after my surgery I had a burger and fries and ate it over a course of 2 hours
Wtf you're wild lmao. Restrictions? What are those, never heard of them 💀
I would not advocate or recommend this.
This is going to be life changing!)
I have a special needs kid who can't handle changes to his routine, so I was up taking him to his activities a day later.
I'm dying right now and it's day 7. It's getting worse and worse. They say the pain will get worse as its healing
its my 2nd dayy 😭😭😭
@@maheeheI know your probably healed but I’m on day 10 and it’s starting to tone down but it hurts
