I was that 1 patient who bled an insane amount at home the next day. I woke up choking on my blood (I apologize for the graphic image). I was 26 at the time. My roommate drove me to the Emergency Room and there was just so much blood gushing out of my mouth. I asked the nurse at the hospital to fetch me a priest to come and pray with me because I genuinely thought I would die. Then the anesthesiologist came in and he held my hand and said (with a _very thick_ Russian accent): "Son, you're going to be just fine. Just breathe and try to imagine your Mom is holding you" (I had been asking for my Mom who lived in a different country at the time). He was so sweet and thoughtful. He got me relaxed and kept holding my hand as they wheeled me in the operating room. The recovery was beyond painful. But I'm SO HAPPY I did the surgery, despite the nightmare I endured. I was getting Strep Throat every other week and was genuinely and physically sick from antibiotics. The surgeon told me than less than 1% of patients experience the kind of bleeding I had. Oh well. At least it's behind me now :D
I am getting my surgery October 2nd. I am terrified but I have been on antibiotics since June for strep throat and it is taking a physical and mental toll on me. I am scared of the procedure but I cannot feel like this anymore
Just got mine out 5 days ago…just brace yourself. It’s some of the worst pain I’ve ever experienced. Lost 10 pounds in 5 days yooo🤕. Good luck, I was also dealing with tonsil stones and stuff like that my whole lifr
omg, i am 15 years old and i got real bad strep in 5th grade, and i am currently in 10th grade and i just went to the doctors yesterday and the doctor told me i had reoccuring tonsillitis, i have tried so hard to find someone that has dealt with it and it has been so hard, i have to go in 2 days to an ENT, i am so scared i have real bad anxiety and have had panic attacks before, hopefully i get my tonsils out i am so tired of dealing with this, 5 years ago it started as bad strep, then after week i told my mom that i wasnt feeling any better and she said "your fine its all in your head" during the first two years i had to take a drink as soon as i swallowed but the last five years i have to actually chew my food AND drink at the same time, it has sucked and about a week ago it got really bad, my throat was so sore and tonsil stones were covering the back of my throat and yet i was still told "it is all in your head" i havent had any medical attention because i have always been told that it is just in my head, and i have had my phone took and been yelled at because they think i am just seeking attention, when actually i have been dealing with reocurring tonsilities, if yo see this could you please tell me if you went to an ENT, and if so how did it go? im sorry im so nervous/scared
Cant tell you how much I wish we had an NHS here in the US with compassionate doctors and surgeons rather than the Top Gun ego types I run into so often here. You truly seem genuinely compassionate.
I'm on my 5th day after a complete tonsillectomy and my 2nd day at home. Though I had a wonderful surgeon and doctors, they seem to be more on a "classic approach" side, so noone told me about the possible muscle cram and that you actually need to chew and swallow a lot and eat normal foods to reduce the pain, which sounds counter intuitive. After trying that for just one day and having a darn pizza instead of mushed potatoes, all I can say is wow - this really works like a magic trick, I have a lot less less pain while swallowing now, all thanks to you and your great advice. Thank you so much, Vik!
So good to know! I’m so nervous about it. I was given the same advice after a c-section, to keep moving because that actually lessons the pain. It totally worked! So I’ll definitely try to eat after the surgery. Thanks!
My enlarged tonsils blocked my breathing. I would sleep up to 12 hours and still wanted to sleep all day. After removal, I can't sleep more than 6 hours and 4 hours of sleep is enough for the day. More oxygen, better rest. The pain is from swelling and soreness. I had zero bleeding but my doctor said no food for 10 days. Only smoothies. So I never provoked the scabs. The scabs are super smooth and they melt like ice cream. You won't feel any rough scabs like an outer scab on your arm or leg. Swallowing and talking cause pain. Don't talk and spit your saliva to avoid swallowing. Save your swallowing for pills and water. 3rd day was the worst, day 4 got better. Day 6 I cut pain meds 75% and got my thirst and appetite back. Just sucked not eating till day 10. I lost 18 pounds.
I'm 25, I've lost 12lb so far which is nice cause I've been meaning to lose 20-30lb, and I've barely even been hungry, whether that's from the opioids or just the throat pain making me not wanna eat idk. I'm on day 8. Day 5- 6 was actually the most painful thing I've ever felt, it was intense ear and jaw pressure. Thankfully I was prescribed a lot of liquid oxycodone and that fixed me up quick. I breathe so much better now, but my voice is a little lighter/less nasally(not necessarily a bad thing, but noticable).
From a patient perspective I can endorse everything on this video - I'm 10 days out from having had my tonsils out along with some other work in the same area. The pain for the first few days was easily bearable but it ramped up to really very severe pain at around day 7. I'm now experiencing slightly less pain with each passing day. I'm using CPAP whilst I'm waiting for my UPPP surgery swelling to subside, and having anyalyzed last night's data in Sleepyhead, the evidence shows my sleep apnea to have been cured. I have plenty of central apneas, which are being caused by the pain killers and oral morphine that I'm on, but once I'm off the pain relief I'll have a brand new life to enjoy without the constant fatigue. I'm already far happier and healthier despite the post operative pain, and I'm counting the days until I'm pain and fatigue free.
Doc said using cpap would be annoying and painful during healing and to lose weight to not use it.. how much do u weigh etc...I'm 377 doc says go to 325 to lower risk of breathing problems after surgery that was 3 years ago I have a cpap struggling to lose weight my tonsils flop in the wind from the mask if I flex my throat a certain way
I’ve been extremely hesitant over the last 8 years to get this surgery for my sleep apnea. Seeing your positive comment about your results gives me hope and I hope I can get this done soon.
I am planning to have this surgery this coming month. Had my sleep disorder check up 11yrs ago and the doctor advise me to undergo tonsilectomy, but hesitant to do so. Now that I have a partner, I decided to have this surgery done soon. Thanks for the advise.
I'm from Slovenia and I had my tonsillectomy a week ago and when I was dismissed from the hospital at the end of the week, they specifically gave instructions to eat ONLY soft foods for the next two weeks, so learning that the new guidelines state that it is okay (and even better) to eat normal food was actually a surprise. Also the painkiller scheduled given as the example in the video is really helpful and helps me a lot with the pain, since my hospital just gave me metamizole with the instruction to take 1 (500mg) every 12h, which actually left me in loads of pain. I'm now taking paracetamol (1g every 9h), metamizole (750mg every 9h) and ketoprofen (50mg every 9h) - meaning I take one of these every 3h or so - and it has made even swallowing much easier. Also as nice as you are, the surgeons around the world are probably more likely to be arrogant and mean, not even taking enough time to discuss things with their patients. Also just to clarify: I had my tonsillectomy under local anasthaesia, because they stated the healing process would be faster and I would have less pain, however I also needed electrocoagulation of a blood vessel on the left side about 4h after my tonsillectomy, s oI don't know how that complicated healing.
I would not follow the 12 hours regime. Remember your body is yours to take care of. If it hurts, the healing gets much slower (too much inflammation causes excess pain, and slowing on recovery).
May I know why did u remove ur tonsils? My doc suggested me to remove mine, I am scared, I don’t have much visible symptoms like throat pain, difficulty in eating bla bla bla,. I would like to know how r u rn? And do u have recurring infections?
Thank you so much for explaining why I need to persevere with eating normal foods and the importance of regular painkillers and staying hydrated. I am 24 hrs post-tonsillectomy and at 44 have been terrified by the horror stories out there so it's been very reassuring to watch your post 😊
This is a really great video I’m currently on day seven, boy has been rough. I had to go back to the doctors and get stronger painkillers and thankfully I’m now able to eat.

My 4-year old sons are coming out this week. I’m so nervous for him but you have helped me by explaining everything! Thank you for this video, I will be ready for him to recover ❤
Your information was bang on. I’m from Australia and my husband just got his tonsils outs 10 days ago. My turn is in one week so watching him has made me more anxious, but he has assured me that it’s manageable. I’ve been looking through UA-cam and found this vid to be the most informative and accurate. Probably since the UK is similar to Australia. Thank you!!
Thank you so much for this video! I‘ve had my tonsils out this week and have watched this video at least 5 times at this point. It‘s very reassuring to hear that the alteration in taste usually goes away after a few days/weeks.
I will be 40 in a few months and can remember having throat problems since at least kindergarten. After a particularly painful and severe episode of strep a few years ago (I was sick for 3 months!), I want to have my tonsils removed, but I am so scared! Scared and scarred!!
To everyone who is scared or nervous, today was the surgery and i watched this video too. The most important is, drink a lot!! Like every five mins drink a few sips, also if you dont feel like eating dont eat too much because you might throw up. I barely ate and i didnt have nausea or anything. I personally experienced it very lightly so far, of course im full of painkillers etc, but it was actually kind of fun, i was worried but doctors and nurses comforted me and took good care of me. I am going to sleep at the hospital today, but i will update after I've recovered. Also, ask every question you want to, don't be shy, and ask for painkillers the moment it starts getting worse!! dont eat dry things and dont lean forward. After you're done with the operation, you will feel very strange and high. After a while you will be able to drink, and eat. When you already drank you can go and take a little walk or use the toilet, it will help a lot. Swallow very frequently because it helps with the pain and the recovery. I wish all of you good luck and smooth recovery!
Today is the second day, i could barely sleep and it hurt a lot, but it isn't that hard really. It's not terrible and the pain is manageable with medications.
Day 3, absolutely the worst so far. Got a fever even with medications and my throat is filled with mucus. Eating a few "solid foods" like carrot from a soup and some mug cake soaked in milk, but it's pretty hard to eat. Also i coughed and my lungs and trachea burns because of the breathing tube. However i didn't hemorrhage and i hopefully won't. Honestly, i still believe that it was worth it and the pain for me is still pretty bearable, but maybe its because i have a pretty high pain tolerance.
Day 4, today i only woke up once around 4am to pretty extreme pain, i immediately took medicine and then the whole day i was okay. Honestly it's only bad in the morning, but i personally think the hunger and the lack of normal food is way worse than enduring the pain. I also think my scabs are starting to fall but I'm not sure.
Well day 5 was pretty rough, it's 2am and i can't sleep because of the pain. I just took my meds because they make the pain go from a 10/1000 to a 10/2, i am kinda suffering but i know it is gonna be worth it, so i try to motivate myself and be positive.
day 7 and today i feel amazing. I can last longer without meds and also i can speak. I could sleep without waking up to coughing and pain. Also, yesterday was the absolute worse. The ear pain is excruciating. I still have the ear pain but when i take my meds it goes away too, also my scabs fell down or at least most of it, however it's still uncomfortable and ugly. I can brush my teeth too finally.
What a great and informative video. Thank you. Im 2 days post op and this was so useful. Wish my own surgeon had taken the time to explain things the way you have
My 8 year old had her tonsils out. We are on day 4 of recovery. So far so good. Better than I thought. She is doing great! Tylenol, soft foods and popcycles
How was the blood test, my son will have his remove on June but he scary kid and so afraid of the blood test, any advise for when I have to take him for
@@bhajnikbhangoo1712 We started off with soup, pop cycles, Tylenol for pain, and smoothies. Then gradually a few days later she ate Mac and cheese. We are on day 11.. I think. There was blood that came out of her mouth on day 9 and 10. Because the scabs came off.
getting my tonsils out in early may the day before my birthday :| ent told me today my tonsils weren't looking too hot at all and that i've had chronic tonsillitis for over a month. this video helped wake me up to the reality that recovery will be a bit strenuous, and helped me prepare myself a little more on the mental side of things for this operation (as short as it seems it may be). thanks for the lovely video! you've helped a lot of us out here with our worries for our tonsils.
May I know y did u remove ur tonsils ? What were ur symptoms? How r u now? Do u have any reccurring infections? My doc suggested me to remove them, I am scared and I don’t have much visible symptoms like pain in throat or difficulty in eating etc. just that my tonsils r big and have recurring tonsil stones.
I just got my tonsils out a day ago. Thank you for mentioning that I can eat a normal diet! I think that people saying that getting tonsils out as an adult is worse than taking them out as a kid is a myth. Yes, it's painful. But it's really not that bad. So for all the adults getting them out (I'm late 20's) it's truly not that bad. I guess it depends on how much pain you can tolerate.
I'm 42. I removed my tonsils yesterday...... the pain is something else. Its huge..... I gave a birth to my child WITHOUT EPIDURAL.... so I consider myself as a person with tolerance on pain... But still.. all I can say is that I'm suffering since yesterday. 😥
20 yo, youre still a baby. Im 37, and it hurts as hell. The tissue grows deeper the older you get. When youre young they dont have to cut so deep its still more to the surface. Just had it done 3 days ago. Its torture
This is a very useful video. Thank you. I had my tonsils removed on Monday 11/04/22 and the journey has been extremely painful. The pain is actually unbearable. When people/Drs say tonsillectomy is more painful for adults, it's an understatement. It's so true when you say we should stay on-top of the pain by taking pain relief regularly and not wait till the pain is so bad and, we find ourselves trying to quickly take too many different pain relief. It's a little too late by then, and I'm afraid you will feel the pain to the fullest. I was crushing my Endone and putting it in some yoghurt and took it along with some liquid Nurofen so it wasn't so painful to swallow. It's day four today, I just drop my pills in some yoghurt now, I don't crush them anymore. Stay on-top of your pain relief and try and eat and stay hydrated as well no matter how much it hurts to swallow.
@Justin Williams i also had both wisdom teeth surgically removed, and believe me, tonsillectomy hurted 3x more. But that don't have to be same with you, everyone is different.
I want to get mine out soon. I'm scared that I'm going to feel hellfire in he back of my throat and God won't answer my prayers to end the pain. I'm terrified but the headaches and trouble breathing makes me want to do it. Hopefully I don't die tho.
Thank you for this outstanding video. I almost did not watch it as ai have already watched about 10 on the subject. I am so glad I did as your was the only video that discussed infections and strategies for eating post surgery. Cheers
Thank you doc. I am getting my tonsils removed in 6 days. I am 35, been fighting with strep my whole life. I have enlarged tonsils on the right side. I have have 6 streps in 10 months. I am tired of being sick all the time. This video helped me relax a bit, because i am scared about the surgery.
Superb advice, I suffered for years with tonsil stones and tonsil infections. My GP was reluctant to entertain any reason to remove them until I saw a locum who looked at my history of throat infections and decided I should see a consultant who removed my tonsils. It was agony for two weeks and I had a bleed half way through but it stopped on its own. I have no problems with throat infections at all and the only problem I notice still after 25 years is an excess of mucus on the back of the throat especially after a cold drink.
I had mine removed 3 days ago as treatment for my sleep apnea. The pain is horrible and unimaginable. But if you just listen to your doctor, then the pain management could be easy. As for me, the only 3 issues I'm having while trying to recover are difficulty swallowing food and fluids, having the urge to spit saliva from time to time, and the tingling sensation in my throat that's tempting me to cough or clear throat (but my doctor said do not do so as it may cause bleeding and the suture could fall off which may result in ugly healing of your tissues). I hope to see great result in my sleeping after all these pain and restless nights.
Thanks for another great video. One thing I really wanted to know post-surgery is the intensity of pain over the next two weeks. Most videos on UA-cam suggest that day1/2 is pretty bearable. Day 4/5/6 is when it gets severe, and thereafter it gets bearable again. In my case, it was pretty low for the first 7 days. I was taking my medications regularly without a miss, and eating rough as advised. On day 8, however, the pain got severe and I found it difficult to swallow. Then on day 9, it was so excruciating I could no longer eat, even the Difflam Spray didn't work, so all I had for one day was heavy painkillers and no food. Naturally, In the early hours of day 10, I started vomiting incessantly and ended up in A&E where they put me on a drip and gave me anti-nausea medication. After about half a day when I was rehydrated and managed to eat without vomiting, they let me go. From then on, the pain gradually subsided. Interesting for me was that on day 8 I thought the worst is over because in most people's experience it's around day 5 the pain reaches its climax, but I couldn't have been more wrong.
I think you were doing all the right things but unfortunately on day 7 you got an infection and it all went pear shaped. everyone is different and that's what makes it difficult to give out advice. glad you are feeling better!
The 'eat normal foods' thing definitely seems to be a UK/US difference. Here in the US, they tell you to eat soft foods. I really think the reason I healed so well (without any 'breaking off' of scabs or pain associated with the scabs going away) is because I babied those scabs with mostly liquids and only extremely soft (mashed up) food so that they didn't get scraped away and expose the unhealed tissue underneath prematurely. They stayed moist and undisturbed until they were ready to gradually dissolve painlessly away on their own. Just my personal experience, of course, but the ides of telling people to eat rough foods to disturb the scabs kind of freaks me out. That just sounds awful. (I also don't think I would have been able to eat normal foods early on even if I'd wanted to--even getting fluids down was a challenge for a while--but that's probably a separate issue related to swelling.) I also had zero bleeding during my whole recovery; none whatsoever. Again, just a personal anecdote, but that was my experience. (I also ate raw honey from days 3 - 9 or so. I don't see enough people talking about this as a potentially beneficial thing to do, but it looks like they've done some recent studies showing that it helps.)
I'm from Poland and 4 days post-OP. Here, doctors also recommend soft food. For me it's almost impossible to swallow soup, not even talking about 'normal' food. Hope I will heal as well as you.
I’m also from the US & my 17 y.o. daughter is having a tonsillectomy in 2 days. The solid food advice alarmed me too. I’m glad you shared your experience. I’m going to play things by ear, but I don’t think I’m gonna have my daughter eat solid food right away. I appreciate your advice about the raw honey. I can see how that helps since honey has healing properties.
I’m getting mine removed on Friday. This video has been quite informative. I’ve been so anxious about it, the pain I felt 3weeks ago in hospital when my tonsils reacted was quite unbearable. And I’m so anxious
I am getting mine removed on Friday, and I am extremely nervous. I get strep multiple times out of the year, and it's so painful, but just going on the knife along with the recovery pain is scaring me
Apparently the older you are the worse the experience, so I’m somewhat nervous but not really. Those childhood infections really built up my hatred for them.
Thank you so much for this! I really appreciate it. I'm going to get Tonsillectomy operation along with getting my uvula removed. This video helped me a lot I hope you keep you the good work! 👊🙆🏾
Cannot thank you enough for this fantastic video. So so helpful. I'm 7 days post tonsillectomy and this video has helped so much. Thank you for taking the time out to make such an informative video.
6 days post-op right now. The 2-3 days after were the WORST days. The pain killers dont work and i was in so much pain. Every 3 hours. Including at night. It was miserable.
Is the pain more than when you get tonsilitihis ? Iam 40 and was told to take them out when I was 10 but never did I have sore throats 5-6 times a year. Scared of the pain from the operation specially after he said it’s very very painful.
@@TheMuslimChannel1 I can answer that. The pain from a tonsillectomy is far worse than the one from a tonsillitis. But if you need it to get less infections, I’d say go for it. Think of it as the last freaking time your tonsils make you sufferz
I’m on day 4 of recovery, first couple of days were terrible and wouldn’t wish it upon anyone however… taking paracetamol/ibuprofen on intervals, drinking water and eating tiny squares of bread with butter has helped speed up the healing process 110% for me. Don’t get me wrong attempting to eat the first couple days will always be rough but it’s good to push yourself a little bit (swallowing movement helps keep the area clean and healthy). It still hurts now but I’m doing so much better mentally and physically than I was day 1, 2 and 3. Slowly getting there!! P.s. if you’ve ever dealt with tonsillitis and quinsy’s back to back I’m so sorry. My surgeon checked up on me after the procedure, telling me that it was a good job I had them removed when I did because I was forming yet another quinsy… Hopefully never have to hear those god forbidden words again hahahah.

despite we're beyond endemic here in Malaysia I am still concerned of going to hospitals. but I am 27 now and tonsilitis is always the reason for my fever.
I suffered as a child for years with tonsillitis. British army doctors kept me on a drug called Triominic in th 1970’s. A very sweet liquid from memory. Never needed to have them removed.
Thank you Mr Veer for your informative video. I’m a new Ent resident and I found your video extremely helpful in tonsillectomy management, a lot of info from experience and not found in textbooks
Glad you found it useful. Much of medicine isn't in the books. You'll develop your own consenting style with time, and it'll be better than mine i'm sure. Good luck!

I’m in my 30s and just had my tonsils out yesterday (US) and have been counseled to eat soft foods. I’ve also lived in London and am familiar with differences in guidance on many procedures between the US and UK. Is there any published research in any scientific journal in which your findings on proper diet post-surgery are presented?
I am in Canada and they never removed my tonsils because my blood pressure was very high as a child due to kidney failure (230/180 .. ya .. as a kid!). So I still have my tonsils and they have holes in them now. I started back on CPAP but this time I actually got tonsillitis which is odd because I hadn't gotten that since my 20's.
I was given the green light on my tonsillectomy yesterday. Since the age of 16 I get tonsillitis at least every year and sometimes 3 or 4 times a year (I’m now 42). I have also had quinsy on numerous occasions. I have never been so happy and worried about this operation. I know how much tonsillitis hurts and I can only assume a tonsillectomy hurts even more. However I can’t keep on getting unwell and having time off work. I had a sinus operation about 5 years ago and I wasn’t worried about that (I ended up with an infection which spread to my eye and my brain following the operation). I know the waiting list will be long and I will have to wait ages. I’m really hoping to see some positive news about this operation.
Thanks a lot for all your information I no longer fear to do this operation and turbinectomy now. Thanks for easing my long life fear. Will do it this year
My issue is it’s 2024 why don’t we have less invasive options to help tonsils? I’ve been trying to look into natural remedies to shrink tonsils but never found anything. I’m terrified of surgery I can’t even handle getting my blood taken so I really don’t want to do it
Try meditating. My pain tolerance increased dramatically when I learned to control of the psychological aspect of it. That feeling of, "Oh no, this is gonna hurt". I used to psych myself out and things were far more painful. I just had blood drawn for pre surgical testing. I stayed loose and relaxed. By not tensing up, it made the blood draw a breeze. I get my cavities filled without novocaine, too.
@@thatpoeticthug Hey Mate, I'm 32 and 3 days post-op. Look it's not fun, but I was eating 'normal' food an hour after I woke up. Just keep up the painkillers and keep up the fluids.

Why did my doctor tell me to only eat liquid/soft foods for the next 14 days? And to avoid solid foods? I am now very concerned about becoming the 1 - 25.
You seem like a great Dr. This video was really helpful. I’m on day 7 and the pain is so bad 10/10. Day 1-2 was super bearable then gradually got worse. Today by far the worst. Trying to keep my game face on and power through!
Appreciate the video - great information for patients. However, why isn't pain managed better? As a retired RN, this really seems to be one of the few surgeries where pain is not managed to the same standard as other procedures. I understand the concerns around opioids, but leaving patients in pain seems counter intuitive and cruel. What about at least T3s? Some of us cannot take Ibuprofen and Tylenol alone has never addressed any pain for me. I am on a wait list for a tonsillectomy ... Personally I will not consent to the procedure without a better pain management option than OTC meds. Would like to hear the rational for such a conservative approach to pain management in this procedure.
@@VikVeerENTSurgeon I was wondering specifically about Tylenol with codeine (T3s) as an option. I have found it very helpful when the tonsillitis pain gets particularly bad, so thinking that it would maybe also work for tonsillectomy. Thoughts?
Super informative video. I am 7 days post tonsillectomy, turbinate reduction, shaving my uvula and deviated septum surgery. The pain ramped up to unbearable yesterday but today seems a bit better. After watching this as well as some other videos my fear is post op. Bleeding around this time. I am trying to be super careful and eat only cold soft stuff but your video says differently. I’d love a slice of pizza but not sure I could do it because the throat pain is intense.
Is a breathing tube necessary? My kids are supposed to get their tonsils removed over the next month. I’m terrified. The hospital has terrible reviews and it’s not pediatric based.
My son (16) is having his out next week and I’m worried sick about the pain he will be in! They say since he’s a child, he will only need Tylenol and ibuprofen, I don’t understand what would change in the next 2 years that would make his pain worse, and I worry his pain will be uncontrolled!
@@JenLongtin I wouldn't worry too much, its a low risk surgery and the younger you are the faster you recover. Did your son already do it or is it still planned?
I had mine removed at age 62. I needed them out! However… if you’re having yours out, drink Warm or hot water! NOT COLD! I was getting dehydrated but couldn’t eat ice or anything cold, so I finally took a sip of my boyfriend’s coffee with MCT oil in it, and it went down SO EASILY!!! I told my doctor and she was going to tell her patients! Saved me a trip to the ER!
Good to know. I am 47 and having mine out in a few months. I am a coffee drinker (all day long) and find warm drinks help me during strep and tonsillitis so was thinking that cold might not be the thing for me. Hope you are on the mend and healing well.
I have literally just had mine taken out - same day. The surgeon, anesthesia and nurse all said do not have anything too hot as it can soften the wound and cause a bleed or infection.
honestly thank you so much :) I was supposed to get a Tonsillectomy in august for my chronic tonsil stones but it got pushed back to October cause of all the lockdowns in Australia, so now im stressing about it in preparation again. Kinda scared at the amount of pain I'm going to experience but this and the surgery video really helped mentally prepare me for it (especially the tip about the pain killers). Also didn't know I should also eat harder foods, I guess it depends on how much it hurts though lol. Thanks!!!
Hi,I live in Australia and I’m also getting my tonsils removed in a few weeks and I’m super nervous haha, if you’ve already had your surgery and are removing are there any tips that could help me??
@@Lily-bz8ld hey! I totally the nervousness haha. I'm 13 days post tonsil surgery and I can finally eat normal food again (although still no hard stuff like chips). A big tip for me was eating yoghurt from those squeezy pouches because sometimes I couldn't open my mouth wide enough to get a spoon in lol (I was pretty much living off of custard and Milo yoghurt pouches for a week and a half), also drank alot of the berry boost juice and had these little hazelnut sorbet ice cream from Aldi. I could eat some really soft foods like pasta or a heated up ham/cheese croissant after a few days but the act of swallowing hurt like heck (take pain killers before food) but I was somehow able to eat a potato cake the day after surgery. Also for the first few mornings i woke up with a lot of pain because it had been like 9 hours since I had pain killers so make sure to drink alot of water before bed to help reduce that morning pain/dryness (usually couldnt talk till pain killers kicked in). For the first week it also hurt to say certain words or vowels I guess and I had to talk softly. When your neck gets sore it helped ease the pain to use moisturizer to massage the area. If/when your tongue starts to hurt try eat foods that dont need a lot of chewing so you dont move your tongue as much. Anyway, sorry for the long comment that's just some things I did that helped me. Hope everything goes well for you! You'll figure out little things that help you along the way. Trust me, it may hurt like hell but it'll be worth it in the long run :)
@@ranjanashukla3046 Hey! I'm 13 post tonsillectomy now, I'm doing alot better than I was a few days ago, I can actually eat real food now without paint killers. I got the coblation method where they cauterize the wound as they cut it out, it's much better/safer and it all went perfectly. I definitely recommend if you get tonsil stones all the time like I used to. It's definitely worth the week and a half of severe pain to never have to deal with the stones again :)
Hello Dr. Veer! I've needed to have my tonsils removed for the past 20 years and I've been too afraid to do it and I've heard so many horror stories from friends who've had it done. Can you tell me about Coblation Tonsillectomy or if you've got a video on it?
I have a surgery planned at the end of this month and I'm still in doubt if I want to have them removed. Yes I have had some bad inflammations 3/5 times a year since puberty (I'm 23 now). And the surgeon said I had tiny 'holes' in my tonsils which makes them prone to bad bacteria. I am super nervous for my surgery and I don't know what to feel or think. I just hope when I do the surgery I won't have any infections and high fevers anymore..
Hi, I am here because my son had a tonsillectomy and adenoidectomy today. He is 9 years old , So far he is good he eats well. I am worried about days 4,5 I hope the pain doesn’t grow bad before he heals completely.
Hey doc. Since I was a kid I've gotten intermittent tonsillitis. It got really bad in my later teens then seemed to subside for a few years. Now (I'm 27) I've had a sore throat for a year. My lymph nodes on the front of my neck are incredibly painful and swollen as of several months ago. My WBC has been high for several months as well. I've recently gotten ear problems (pain, pressure changes, crunching noises, ringing) as well. I genuinely think my tonsils are causing this, and I want them out. They're huge and they look absolutely terrible. My PCP is extremely dismissive and the furthest I've gotten is a refferal to an infectious disease specialist. I'm hoping they'll refer to me an ENT. Do my symptoms sound typical of someone who'd quality for a tonsillectomy? I'd go through any amount of pain for what I've been going through to end.
Make an appointment. Those symptoms hit me as a teen. I haven't gotten them taken out, but I plan to set a date tomorrow. My tonsils now never stop hurting and the headaches and couching makes me puke and really gets me in a bad mood. I also cough up blood and have tonsil stones. I finally decided I want out. Every possible remedy never works.
Not to scare you but you need to see an ENT (if you haven't already). What you're experiencing could be symptoms of lymphoma. My ENT is watching my tonsils for this same reason and wants to see me again in a few months. If my tonsils don't look better by then he said I'd likely need them out. They have no way of biopsying a tonsil to check for lymphoma. Idk if theres blood work to check specifically, but because you mentioned you WBC being elevated it's worth pursuing. Praying all works out for you 🙏
Thanks for posting this! I have the same issue. Tonsil stones are ruining my life. I'm 47 and a bit scared but I think I will push for the surgery. How long did it take you to heal?@AUCEDELAMMAS
I ve had for a year before the op, high fevers, not rheumatic, but had a bout of Peliosis, and my tonsils were full of streptococcus emoliticus type A.
@@VikVeerENTSurgeon Yes much better Doc, very kind of you, unfortunately after the operation i developed a chronic catharral rhino faringitis. Cant stay in smoky rooms, sea air is very good for me, I love the steam bath and sauna they open up a lot.
This last year I've had several throat infections and the last 6 months my throat feels extremely tight and like I'm being suffocated and super tight at night and day and feels like my air way is being blocked and super swollen... my surgery is in 4 days for tonsils to be removed. Feel super nervous that my throat will be swollen worse then they are now/won't be able to breathe. Went to hospital 2 weeks ago because I felt like I couldn't breath and found out I had sleep apnea on top of that, oxygen went down to 70% and felt like I was going to passout and die.
I've had the worst cases on tonsillitis and tonsil stones, I've also pulled out of 3 appointments to have it removed. I'm extremely scared of having it removed I could pass out just thinking about it. I'd really love to have no tonsil problems but not via surgery. I might just be that 0.1 %. I came across this video Considering removing them but I always think about the worse case scenario
Not the same, but I had an adenoidectomy when I was about 4. I remember my surgeon was amazing. He kept me calm and gave me a little lamb stuffed animal- I still have it
Hi please to answer my question..can patanase be used everyday or it has similar effects as the otrivine in the sense of depriving the nasal membrane of oxygen? Please to answer
I had to take childrens calpol for a day or 2 but it made me ill so i stopped taking it, i got through the pain with just ice packs on constantly, by day 7 didnt need any ice packs on, just had ear pain until day 10 but im now on day 12 and im ok barely any pain
I had my tonsils removed at 22. It was absolutely the worst experience of my life. I was given oral liquid morphine as a pain killer and it barely touched the pain. The recovery lasted 14 days and during that time I couldn’t even swallow my own spit and eating was out of the question. The best I could manage was letting ice chips melt in my mouth. I ended up losing 39lbs. I didn’t have any major bleeds, just horrible pain. My tonsils had been infected for 1 full year before removal. I’d still go through it all again to have them gone. Any insight into my recovery? Would this experience be considered uncommon?
Chronic inflammation (which you were treating with surgery, by removing them), larger than normal blood supply, person dependent immune system response to localised injury.... all kinds of possibilities, perhaps even low pain threshold.
I had my tonsils removed about 20 years ago. I was told of everything to expect but I wasn't ready for what happened on day 8th. I was cooking breakfast and I smelled the Steam of the potatoes I just had season. I started feeling this warm felling in the back of my throat than I tasted blood. I ran over to the garbage can opened my mouth and blood just started pouring out of my mouth. I was 15 years old and my sister was 14 years old and we were home alone. My sister called 911 and they stopped the blood before taking me to the hospital to get checked out.
i've written a book on this. simple answer there is no truth / evidence / proof that removing tonsils has an effect on your ability to fight infections.
Hi Vick, thanks for your quick reply. Im mainly worried about long term problems of these surgeries that my NHS ENT doctor has recommended: Tonsilectomy, Adenoidectomy and Sub Mucosal Diathermy of Inferior Turbinates. ESPECIALLY ADENOIDECTOMY Please let me know if you know of any
What kind of pain do you feel on the first day and 1 week? What should we pay attention to in order to avoid bleeding? How many doses of ibuprofen did you use?
hey! so i got it a week age and my tips: swallow a lot!! also drink every two minutes even if it hurts, eat!! but don't eat hot spicy or very cold, also don't eat solid because these can worsen the pain and the bleeding. I didn't lose a single drop of blood during recovery(i am still recovering tho), also, take ur meds the moment you feel pain! if you have to take it at 2 am then set an alarm. Also prepare for waking up a lot at night in the first days. The pain is like, sometimes it's worse sometimes it's better; your tongue and jaw will hurt, your ears will be probably the worst, and it's a sharp pain like when you burn your finger during cooking. But don't worry just distract yourself all the time and rest, don't do absolutely anything, not even small walks or cleaning.
also, morning will be the worst. But don't lose hope it gets better after a while. Sleep while sitting up. If you don't know what to eat, i ate these: soup without anything in it, bananas(hurts so don't try it in the first days), baby food, puding, yogurts, i tried ice cream but didn't make it better, popsicles, pasta with a lot of sauce, a little mug cake soaked in milk. Your doctor will tell you everything you need to know, so don't worry. Be aware of bleeding because it's very dangerous.
Regarding treatment of OSA/UARS with cocentric collapse, does a tonsilectomy usually improve ones sleep? Can removing the tonsils cause a large tongue to collapse further back than prior to surgery? I know its not a one size fits all, but just trying to navigate this complex space.
Dr Vik Veers, I appreciate you may not be able to respond, but I was wondering if it's possible for a patient to request a local rather than a general anaesthetic for maxillofacial surgery involving the removal of a small portion of bone to enable the removal of a wisdom tooth? Thank you
My 10 year old son is due to have his adenoids and tonsils removed soon. I'm absolutely terrified of a bad bleed as I have heard horror stories of this! My son has autism aswell so I'm really worried about how he will cope. He has sleep apnea and recurrent strep throat so he has to have it done but I'm losing sleep over it. Any advice for a child with special needs who has limited understanding. Thanks.
I had to have an tonsil abscess drained 6 days ago. It came right back 2 days later and had to have emergency tonsilectomy. I am 52 years old and that was the worst pain ever. Im really scared as I keep hearing tgat the worst pain comes around the 7th day. Its only been 36 hours since my surgery. I am having difficulty swallowing liquids and am aspirating some. Im not sure if this is normal or not. I have stitches on both sides and was not told about this before surgery or after. I have no idea if there are different recommendations for if you have stitches. I do have to say that your voice is so calming. I was literally in tearss and shaking when I came across your video and just your calming voice has helped me. Do you have any advise for seniors who have tonsilectomy with stitches. Im also vwry afraid of the bleeding post 10 days
Hi doc i have tonsilitis since 2009, i t happenes every 1-2x a year the dr said its not necessary to remove yet, but now 2022 i found my tonsil in right side getting bigger, most of my concern is also i feel a painless mass or lymph on my right lower jaw is this might be related and serious?
I am planning to do a Wisdom Tooth Removal and Tonsillectomy both. How shall I approach that? Both together or one after another and if then after how many days and which order? I have 12 days of time to plan both. Can you help me and guide?
Thank you for this. I’m about to have a check up with an ENT on Friday bc I already know that I have enlarged tonsils and I also know that I’ll be needing a tonsillectomy. Hopefully the ENT is as kind as you are. I’ve been suffering tonsilitis ever since I was a kid. Now i’m 27yrs old and it got really bad to a point that i now have sleep apnea that causes rapid weight gain. I’m so ready for thissss 😂
Has anybody had problems with their tongue? It's day 9 and from the beginning I've had more pain on my tongue (side, close to the back) than in my throat... There's a red-gray spot. I can swallow quite easily now but I can't talk or chew at all.. Doctors said it is normal but I find it absolutely annoying and have no clue of how long it will take to heal.
Just had mine done I'm 3 days post op. My tongue is very swollen on one side where it has been clamped down. The worst for me though is the uvula has swollen to unimaginable size they gave me steroids in hospital but it did nothing they did try and use steroids to reduce my permanently inflammed tonsils and that never worked. So am a bit concerned that the uvula will not shrink back down. It looks like it's going to burst.
I have a bad breath no matter how much I brush, floss, mouth wash. 5 years ago I learned the nasty yellow crystal things are popping out from my tonsils. Went to the doctors office told the doctor and gave me a second appointment. Then I lost my health insurance coverage. It is my dream to get rid of the tonsils. I even day dream of the life after that. If those things were outside like fingers, I won't hesitate to chopp them off by myself. I'm about to start a job with health insurance coverage. Hopefully it may cover the overall process. Otherwise I have to find a way to end this misery.
Bad breath was one the problems I was facing along with tonsil infections, I always had to carry gums to make sure my breath was fresh, the problems got worse like 3 years ago and my tonsils were getting bigger I'm 29 and I finally got them removed 2 days ago after so long and honestly the pain isn't that bad, I haven't healed just yet but I can tell my breath doesn't stink anymore. I really hope you get yours removed too. Cause I know how it feels to know you have a bad breath
Damn what a nice doctor, he talks to people like they’re children and I like it!

Glad you’re ok. Thank you for sharing your experience

Thanks!

So the ENT wanted you to start chewing solid foods on the 5th day?
I am going to have tonsillectomy soon. Please let me know. Thank you.
How soon should you start eating normal food
@@realmseer6875 did u get constipated during the first 10 days?
I'm 25, I've lost 12lb so far which is nice cause I've been meaning to lose 20-30lb, and I've barely even been hungry, whether that's from the opioids or just the throat pain making me not wanna eat idk. I'm on day 8. Day 5- 6 was actually the most painful thing I've ever felt, it was intense ear and jaw pressure. Thankfully I was prescribed a lot of liquid oxycodone and that fixed me up quick. I breathe so much better now, but my voice is a little lighter/less nasally(not necessarily a bad thing, but noticable).
Hi! How do you feel now? I know it's years, but it's good to know!
Thank you so very much. Best video on UA-cam for this procedure.

Instead of uppp , you could have made an orthodontist make a custom oral appliance that lift the palate at nights while sleeping
I'm doing a video on oral appliances - so you'll see the pros and cons of that as well.
Was it painful?
I'm sorry, taking pain meds every 12 hours must have been a nightmare 😢
I would not follow the 12 hours regime. Remember your body is yours to take care of. If it hurts, the healing gets much slower (too much inflammation causes excess pain, and slowing on recovery).
Ketoprofine 50mg or 500 mg ?

This Doctor is a wealth of knowledge, Thanks for making such an informative video Dr. Veer.

How is your pain on day 7? By guess is that you spoke out way too soon.
where did you get it removed and how
I'm 42. I removed my tonsils yesterday...... the pain is something else. Its huge.....
I gave a birth to my child WITHOUT EPIDURAL.... so I consider myself as a person with tolerance on pain...
But still.. all I can say is that I'm suffering since yesterday. 😥

Are you cured from pain today! ?

I did it for sleep apnea also my ahi is 34 which is severe, did the surgery help ur sleeping?
Hey. how’s your sleep today? I’m planning to get my tonsil removed because of my sleep apnea.
I had my Tonsillectomy last week and this video helped me so much. Thank you for everything!
Glad it helped!
Me too I still got pains 🤕🤕
Always keep a glass of water in your hand to sip on! Hurts so unnecessarily bad when it’s dry
hello how are you
The 'eat normal foods' thing definitely seems to be a UK/US difference.

How long did your pain end up lasting?
Apparently the older you are the worse the experience, so I’m somewhat nervous but not really. Those childhood infections really built up my hatred for them.

I am on post op 3 rd day today and is suffering a lot with pain. Watching this gives me a little bit of relief..
Thanks

What pain medication can you take that won't interfere with levothyroxine?

How’s it going man?
Such a soothing yet informative video. I'm on day 1 and I'm already struggling
Would like to hear the rational for such a conservative approach to pain management in this procedure.
what analgesia would you suggest? opiates are very poor at dealing with this pain. it's a difficult situation.
@@VikVeerENTSurgeon I was wondering specifically about Tylenol with codeine (T3s) as an option. I have found it very helpful when the tonsillitis pain gets particularly bad, so thinking that it would maybe also work for tonsillectomy. Thoughts?
Perhaps Cannabis products might help?
Super informative video. I am 7 days post tonsillectomy, turbinate reduction, shaving my uvula and deviated septum surgery. The pain ramped up to unbearable yesterday but today seems a bit better.

Thanks!!!

Hi .. are u done with the surgery.. how are u now also mode of surgery?? Plz reply.. I’m too fed up of chronic tonsils stones
It's definitely worth the week and a half of severe pain to never have to deal with the stones again :)
hey thanks for replying to these questions, I was wondering the same things. got my op in 2 weeks and i'm shitting it 😬 lol - best
Hello Dr. Veer! I've needed to have my tonsils removed for the past 20 years and I've been too afraid to do it and I've heard so many horror stories from friends who've had it done. Can you tell me about Coblation Tonsillectomy or if you've got a video on it?
Dr you didn't talk about sutures. I'm on 8 days post operation and the sutures haven't fallen off. It really burns anytime I drink.
Not all patients have sutures. The electrocautery method of tonsil removal does not require sutures, for example.
How did your son do? My brother is going through this soon.
Hey, did you get to the bottom of your symptoms? i have the same and suspect its also my tonsils causing it, or a nerve, not sure.

Feel super nervous that my throat will be swollen worse then they are now/won't be able to breathe. Went to hospital 2 weeks ago because I felt like I couldn't breath and found out I had sleep apnea on top of that, oxygen went down to 70% and felt like I was going to passout and die.
I've had the worst cases on tonsillitis and tonsil stones, I've also pulled out of 3 appointments to have it removed. how are you now? fully recovered??
I'm glad they were able to stop it and you were okay❤️

Hi Vick, thanks for your quick reply. Im mainly worried about long term problems of these surgeries that my NHS ENT doctor has recommended: Tonsilectomy, Adenoidectomy and Sub Mucosal Diathermy of Inferior Turbinates. ESPECIALLY ADENOIDECTOMY

Thanks.
Try this?

After you completely heal from surgery. Will you have holes in your mouth ? Like will you check on food ??
I hope you’re doing fine and the pain went away🫶
I got a prescription lidocaine lollipop after my operation and it helped so much to numb the throat pain!
Thanks
I have a scheduled tonsillectomy in few days
Thank you for this video. I am day 6 and need abit of reassurance especially with pain management. I will continue on. Cheers D
I would leave 6 weeks between the two. you run the risk of the tonsil infecting the jaw.
@@VikVeerENTSurgeon Thanks a lot. That means Dental Surgery takes the first priority and then later Tonsillectomy.
thank you so much for this information. im having a surgery soon.
Same experience I guess it's normal
How about preventing vomiting after the operation?
When can I resume normal eating? What day after surgery I'm still on first day??
Just had mine done I'm 3 days post op. My tongue is very swollen on one side where it has been clamped down. The worst for me though is the uvula has swollen to unimaginable size they gave me steroids in hospital but it did nothing they did try and use steroids to reduce my permanently inflammed tonsils and that never worked. So am a bit concerned that the uvula will not shrink back down. It looks like it's going to burst.
This is what I'm struggling with to my uvula is massive! I'm on day 2 post op
How are both of you doing now? I just got mine removed 1 week ago and the pain is awful but I’m hopeful that my breath will start being better soon!
