How to Grow Large Watermelons on a Trellis? 🍉 🍉 🍉

- In this video I gave 7 tips on how to grow Large Watermelons on a trellis. Everything you need to know is in this video. I demonstrated how I have trained the vines up the trellis. I talked about how I fertilize my melon plants. The biggest issue will be how to support the Large melons. I was did show one way to support the melons if they are 22 lbs or less. The melons are doing well on the trellis for now. I hope growers will try this challenge with me. Growing melons on a trellis is fun and it's challenging.
In the 1970s my grandfather grew a giant field of watermelons to give to the churches. I remember them talking about him saving seeds from 75 pound melons. My mom loved the yellow meated melons. I would get up early in the morning while they were still cool from the night air and bust one open in the field and eat it for breakfast. There were so many of them it didn`t matter and the yellow ones are sweet long before official ripening time. I`m trying cantaloupe this year in a 5 gallon bucket with a six inch grow basket lid filled with expanded clay pebbles in hydro nutrient solution but I`m also planting some in my yard. My hydro nutrients will be used to water them since I bought a bulk package of it during the fertilizer shortage scare. I`m on disability living in a camper in the boondocks with no car so I have to grow fresh food or do without so in Winter I grow lettuce, peppers, basil, bok choy, and a few radishes inside in little hydro gardens. Bunnies ate my lettuce I planted outside this year so next Fall I`m planting the bunnies some lettuce and rye grass and growing mine in a greenhouse. I talk to them when I see them so they don`t run from me. I like the animals to be around because I can`t afford a pet.
Hello Ban Everything, I bet those watermelon tasted great when you split them open in the morning. That's sounds like a good sweet breakfast. Those rabbits will do that, I saw one pulling up my carrots 2 weeks ago. Let me know how the cantaloupes grow in the buckets. If u can get my hands on more buckets, I may join you. I went to a bakery Saturday, and they were out. They charge me 2 per bucket.
Bunnies also love clover.
Rabbit is delicious. Try it in a mustard cream sauce. Get a good Dijon mustard. Will be friendly to your food bill
The Louisiana heat wave ruined everything this year. I have to start earlier next year. Only my okra, cucumbers, and cow peas produced and even that was a struggle. @@GrowSomethingTasty
I bought two prepping tools. Look up 22 caliber Airtact and Zada. I got the 25 caliber Zada because maybe they updated it at least slightly to correct minor problems and decided to try the larger size pellet. Wow are these things powerful for the low price. Had a serious armadillo infestation and had to stop them. I`m letting the bunnies populate my area. Made friends with one. It`s interesting to be able to watch it up close. That`s rare. Enjoyed your video, great tips. You might wish to use tomato clips instead of zip ties as they are a little less stressful on the vines and they can be removed and placed at another location as needed.

Next season I will surely grow on a trellis. I just let the watermelon run wild this year and I love it, yet I'm sure it would do much better with good air flow and pruning! Thanks for another great video!

It was something I wanted to try but after yesterday's storm my big melon are on the ground, I'm at the store now looking for stronger material to support melons. At least I got other melons growing on the ground 😃.

I have a suggestion for you. When you snip off those suckers, you can try rooting them, and planting them into new spots. This can amplify your yield, if it works right. Good luck, and thanks for sharing!

@@GrowSomethingTasty I have not grown them until just now, this year... my first try. I am doing that with tomato plants, though, and although I have faced headwinds, I do feel optimistic about the process. If you can't get them to root, try using a rooting agent, perhaps, and keep that water clean... also, maybe let the cut area scab over, before dunking it into water, to keep germs from getting pulled into the stem.
I've tried it with tomatoes and have been successful. I even took an Accidentally broken stem From a tomato plant and stuck it in the ground and had it grow
For fertilizer, I catch a couple fish, cut em up, dig a small hole next to plants, then put in the fresh fish and cover up.

Nice information,, to share with you, what you called sucker on melon plant was not. The vine at about 90 degrees is a productive vine, the one between the main vine, and the one in discussion at about 45 degrees, that is the "sucker" .... Just sharing.. Many are changing their philosophy on removal of "suckers" One thing to know, cut suckers, overall, production will also cut......... Def not being argumentative, been gardening for about 50 plus years and farming........ Nice Job...... on your video..Enjoy those melons.

Hi Bear I grew 40 pounders on trellis this year i do not think I’ll do it again I had them growing into the wires I had hidden ones when I pruned and I had them falling of even after putting nets around them for support. Don’t use wood chips squash bugs love it .

I work for a large grocery retailer. When the ferns arrive early spring they are wrapped in large plastic netting, similar to Christmas trees. I think they just throw it away, just ask for it. Wouldn't that netting be strong enough to support the watermelons by hanging like a pouch off the trellis?

I had moon and stars that grew to about 20 lbs and oblong green striped melons that grew to about 50 or 60 lbs. I cut a small hole about an inch below the ribbed waist line on each side (on the side above where each panty hose leg is positioned), when melons grew to a size requiring support I placed it inside the panty area then took the legs then tide each on the cow panel steel rail that was located higher than where the melon hung. Does really well if you tie it secure e ough to hold the weight but not so tight where you cant untie for periodic adjustments because the hose stretch as the melons grow. They did very well. I just made sure all was well by checking periodically...

Brown I use bird netting cut into six or so inch long strips 6 x 15 inches or so I cross two pieces on the bottom of the water melon and tie to the trellis. When they are small I loosely put them on the melon then check them to make sure they aren’t to tight on the melon periodically.

Hello Jacquie R, I used a cattle panel trellis from tractor supply, and I bought t-post. I will get that from tractor supply they are more sturdy. I used black zip ties so they don't Crack in the sun. If you youtube how to make an arch trellis Bear Brown, my video will come up. Thanks for watching!!! If you have any questions, let me know. How you doing, things looking good? have you transplanted many young maturing watermelon plants and it worked fine? is it a matter of digging enoug of the dirt under and around the root ball to not effect the plant? thanks
Doing great, how about you. I have not transplanted melons once I plant them. If you are doing that, yes, you want to dig under them getting the root ball. If you damage the root ball, it could cause some problems. I did it with corn plants weeks ago, and it worked. Water it in after transplanting

I live in 8b zone here in Florida….I live in the Panhandle of Florida and rains all the time it seems, but it also gets dry as well! What is your take on how much I should water my melons?
I don't know the answer to that because every climate is different. I will say that mulching my melon plants was a game changer. It holds in moisture. Before I used mulch, I watered twice a week, but every one area is different.
Bear Brown sir....so for the mesh to hold the melon, what did you do when they began to be too big? You said it supposed to hold 22lbs. Did you use 2?
HELLO @dwells I did not anticipate heavy wind storm, that knocked most of my bags off. I would suggest getting a heavy-duty mesh netting and using that. If I can't find that for my next time doing it, use heavy bamboo as a shelf to hold the melons. I won't be able to walk through the tunnel, but I think that will stop them from falling off in a bad wind storm.
How did this work long term I have a plant I’m growing in a pot it’s super happy but it’s time to plant it the seeds I used are from a super big melon so I know they will be big and heavy but I don’t have yard space to grow if
HELLO Beautiful Family, it worked great most of the season until we had a bad windy storm. I only had 2 to make it, and my cantaloupes. With those bigger melons, i needed support other than the bags I was using. I needed that heavy green netting. Unless I did not tied them up wrong.

HELLO Lawrence, yes. I'm in South Carolina. Michigan, I visited there once. I came during the cherry festival. I for got the city. I hear up north you have to grow smaller varieties. Your grow season is a lot shorter. If I live there, I would start my plants inside to help get a jump start. Especially if I wanted to grow larger melons l.
You have to grow short season melons. They are small but tasty.
Might try pantyhose. I’ve seen some fat bottoms held in place with it.

I've seen people use nylon stockings in place of the bag from Amazon.
HELLO can Jews, yes they do. The melons I have seen with the stocking were smaller melons.
How many pounds do you think a pantyhose stocking would hold? I looked up the netting on Amazon….I am going to try that as well! I am defiantly going to try out a trellis this year!
I think pantyhose stockings will hold melons like the size of cantaloupes or small melons like that. My problem came when we had heavy wind.

Also you have to be careful the melon doesn’t get in between the bars of the trellis I’ve had them grow in between and get stuck so make sure your checking to see if they are growing freely. It’s better if you can get them to drop down on the underside in the middle of the arch so they hang freely so move them as the vine grows longer . If you can. Do not twist your vines around the metal tie underneath the arch . Do not wrap any vibes around or you can’t move the vine if you have too.
Yes, having them grow in between the bar is a mess. I hate to see it
Do you cut the low melons off to help the upper melons?
HEY Craig!!! I cut melons to increase the size of them. I have kept some melons down low. I just don't want a lot of melons coming off one plant unless they are smaller melons like the golden midget ( it's a personal size melon)

Hi, it looks like you cut a vine, not the actual sucker. I saw another post trying to tell you, but you said you were just trying to grow bigger melons. True, but you kept the sucker on. It may be why you weren't able to root the clipping. It also works on other plants like peppers too. Hope this helps.
HEY GardenMama!!! Thanks for the information. I cut the vines, too. I called the secondary vine that comes off the main vine. That's what I call a sucker. Is there a different one? Just curious.
How far apart are you spacing each plant on the trellis when you plant them?!

HELLO, TheOprynce, I look for suckers all the time in order to put more energy into the melons. I'm with you. I have to replace a raised bed. I'm looking at a tin raised bed because I'm getting tired of making wood raised beds. Do you grow honeydew as well? Thanks for watching and commenting.
@@GrowSomethingTasty I feel you. I'm in the humid Southeast so unless I'm using pressure treated, I can hope for no more than about 4 years per bed. This time though I'm going to try using the fence panels as lumber and see how they hold up.
I've only ever grown sugar babies and they're not worth it. My 4-year-old grows cantaloupes the last few years, and this year I did grow a type of honeydew. It didn't even have a proper name, it came labeled "New Japanese melon". It's pretty prolific, but the fruits are about the size of the softball.

I really would supprt the weight immediately when they start to have any kind of size. You dont want them to cause damage to the vine. I am doing this this summer,!

Looks nice man. Ground uo shells from shrimp, mussels, clams and crawdad all make for a good fertilizer to add. The hard shells add calcium and other minerals as well and the shrimps shells ans the like add chiten and other goood micros and biology to the soil. My soilnis high in chiten because i compost with ivory head roaches instead of worms. I keep some large bins with these roaches(they cannot climbsmooth plastic) and i throw food andyard waste in them as well asnlayers of cardboard for them to live within and its an awesome system. Roaches are way better composters than worms plus you get the added chiten and their frass is speculated to also trigger plant defenses against insects as it senses the dead bug carcasses as predators. This has potential natural pest management benefits. Ideally worm and roach compost qould be ideal, but i find the worms just dont easily fit into what i have going on atm plus my soil is full of them i dint really need to add their casting or isw them to compost my waste.
Added binus of roaches is poultry likes to eat wm as a treat and they are an excellent protien suppliment for poultry. Even if your chickens dont like em alive you can geound em up and put wm in the feed, but they seem to love live ones. I have swen vids tho where otuer peoples chcikens were not into the roaches alive so much. Id argue thise are very domesticated almost pet like chickens tho because chickens are ruthless and will attack and eat anything in their coup. Wver see a chicken gonafter rodents? Lol. If ao then you see how they could be related to dinasaurs
Fyi, i forgot to mention you are spot on with the nitrogen in fkower but castongs while less soluble nitrogen is available a better idea may be to add potash from your grill or any wood burning you did over winter or in spring. Potash is what plants need when flowering and its very water soluble so do it in separate applications dont just dump all the potash on there at once. Also dont lwt potash get wet before you use it. People dont understand that if it rains for example on their ash pile it has washed all the soluble potassium out of the ash. Its almost impossible to feed a plant too much potassium and its one of the hardest nutrients to keep in the soil so addung it qhen they need it most during flower awt is the way to go

I hate them, but cool to learn that. I wish I could get chickens, but I can't. The HOA would have a fit my neighbors too, lol. Yes, I heard about the ash, but I never burn anything. @@GrowSomethingTasty I’m sorry!! I also saw a video today about a fabric called tulle. It can be purchased at a fabric store, or maybe they sell it by the yard on Amazon. It is a see through fabric, you can tie a few corners in the trellis. Not sure if it would hold up. It’s like a bridal veil see through. I put it over my tomatoes this year because I have fruit worms eating green tomatoes. Plus I have blossom end rot on big peppers. Hopefully you will have more pollinated fruit on your vines. I grew some mini cantaloupes , kijari and Beni nomads watermelons . I was scared they would be too heavy, but I will try bigger melons next year. I hope you do well with the melons.

Perhaps I have failed to make my question clear. I am wondering about a number of leaves left by you beyond the watermelon (in other words, upwards from the watermelon fruit not downwards or along the whole vine)
I'm also curious to know how many leaves each vine has from the root/soil to the top of the vine.

Hi M, sorry I can't spell your name. I don't know how many leaves are left after cutting the vines. I never count them, the only thing I worry about is cutting the vine after the watermelon. Hope this helps.
How tall of a trellising system would you say is needed for one watermelon plant?
HEY, BeingBrandy!!! I have heard that 6 to 7 feet high is good, so the vines can roam. My trellis is 6 feet tall.

Pine mulch good?
Hey Tom, I don't use it but it falls in my garden and I don't move it. It has not done anything to my garden. So I think it can be used as a mulch. I see gardeners who use it, and they love it. As long as the mulch is not mixed into the soil. I made that mistake with leaves as a beginning gardener.
How wide is the trellis?

Everytime I fertilize my watermelons the plants die.... This happened twice. What could be the issue?
HELLO Tyrone, hey man, sorry to hear that. Well, that's hard to say since I see what's happening, but let's see. Could be you are over fertilizing. What fertilizer are you using? If you are using fertilizer that can burn the plants, that could be a reason why they are dying. If you are using fresh manure, that could burn your plants. Are you having pest issues? I hope you can figure it out. Are your plants turning colors.
@@GrowSomethingTasty I didn't use that much fertilizer this time, that's why I'm not understanding why they are dying. It's over 100° in Houston Tx....... Not sure the exact name of the fertilizer however I know it was a low nitrogen all-purpose vegetable and fruit fertilizer..... This is the second time this has happened, do you think I should go without fertilizing my watermelons?
No plants are not turning colors
@tyronegillum3218 Yes, you can try that for one plant and try using a different fertilizer for another. I use fish fertilizer for the nitrogen for my plants. They love it. Maybe try that for another plant and compare the difference. I would also try planting one plant in a different area of the garden to see if one does better. I did all that in my beginning stages of growing melons to learn things about my soil. I did not get melons when I started years ago. Man, I hope this works for you. Keep me posted. If I think of something else, I will let you know. Man, my patch looks great, but I got animals tearing it up. I'm on the lookout, and I set traps out yesterday. It's always something.

I had 2 per plant if I remember correctly. I normally like to have 1 melon per vine unless I'm trying to grow a very large melon
how often do you fertilize my friend and at what dilution per gallon? i grow in bags but im trying to get a better understanding for how soon plants start needing in between feedings (i have started growing in Pro mix soil this year without added ferts)
HEY @Blltz!!! When I plant my seedlings I use tomato tone. I fertilize with 2 tablespoons per gallon of fish fertilizer. I also use compost tea, I use 2 cups per gallon. I fertilize once every 10 days but sometimes I fertilize 2 times a week with compost tea.
