amzn.to/43NMgxl Boogie Brew Compost Tea (3lbs Makes 50 gallon of Tea)
In this video I demonstrate how to care for watermelon plants during the Grow Season. One Game Changer tip is to prune the vines of the plant. This means to take the suckers off the vine. The sucker is a secondary vine that branches off from the main vine. When there are more that one watermelon on a vine it's best to prune one melon off. This will cause the plant to place more energy into the watermelon that is left on the vine. Increasing the side of the watermelon is the side effect of pruning. Fertilizing throughout the growing season is also a critical element in producing a giant. I use compost as well as compost tea. The tea stretches a long way. This is an organic fertilizer that can be applied as much as the grower desires. The plant will not burn because of the tea. Checking the leaves for bugs will help identify problems. Bugs can suck the sap out of the plants causing major problems if not dealt with. Remember to water the plants at the base because by doing so decreases the chance of diseases. Fungus on the plant may stop the production of the fruit. When harvesting the watermelons make sure the tendrils are dried out and cut back on watering to insure the watermelons are sweet. Lastly using mulch will help you with watering. The chances of irregular watering decreases.
I use Boogie Brew compost tea and the Amazon Affiliate Link for it: amzn.to/49g6VM6 This is what I used in the video. I am not sponsored by this product. It just works for me.
Can you practical show how it's done
Thanks! I watched about 4 watermelon videos and you get to the point. We are growing them in hidden patches… we just started doing it with melons but now we are trying watermelons
@@rachealfields2851 HEY Racheal!!! I do my best to get to the point. Let me know how your watermelons do.
@@GrowSomethingTasty we don’t have experience doing it in hidden patches… we want to plant caches everywhere around our city… LIKE a community garden but just in the neglected areas of our city… my husband is a land surveyor that knows a lot of abandoned land.
We want to do this to give more to the people in need. The community gardens suck here and people are more takers than caretakers of the plants. Is there an email I could send u when we start transplanting?
@@GrowSomethingTasty thank you!
TY. I'm in my 5th season of melons. My soil type grows them. I spent $1.44 for seeds and $3.88 for Expert Gardener water soluble fertilizer. I yielded 40 Crimson Sweet melons and shared with my neighbors. God bless you.
HELLO TexasAmericaUSA, come on now. That is SUPER AWESOME. The most I have grown is 25 or 26, definitely not this year. I have got to look up Expert Gardener fertilizer. I know your neighbors were happy that's mad cool. Thanks for sharing this great news.
Where did u find fertilizer so cheep? I seeing like 39dollars for small bag of fertilizer. Never seen any that cheep
First year and with Crimson .I have 2 now and am waiting for more.
This is a true city girl (Chicago) having her first go at gardening anything 😂. I love watermelon and its extremely expensive now ($15+) so that motivated me to try at it. Your videos have been very helpful. I started with the products you had in your planting video (ground worms and mychro- something). This pruning video is helpful because they are getting out of hand and I didnt know to prune back. I'll keep you posted. Thanks again
HEY, @redone!!! It's great that this is your first time gardening. Watermelons are awesome. 15 dollars a watermelon, what??? I see why you are gardening, LOL. Yes, let me know how it goes for you.
@@GrowSomethingTasty well they didn't do well at all. I did get 5 that bothered to grow at all. I planted 5/27/24. Idk if thats late but I was waiting on it to warm up. They didn't grow bigger than a cantaloupe or smaller, but I didn't learn about pruning until late and my neighbor thinks I may not have watered them enough. I'm hopeful for next year and will be watching your videos prior to trying it again. Thank you so much!
I am so glad I watched your video. For years I have been watching so called Watermellon Experts, and never once did they show what the Suckers were or where to cut it vines back. I have been taking care of Crimson Sweets For 18 years now, that came in volunteers. and not once did anyone explain and show it but you. Great teaching video..
HEY Curtis!!! I'm glad you liked the video. Someone messaged me a few weeks ago (an expert) told me it's not a sucker but a secondary vine. I am not a trained expert, but I'm still calling it a sucker. I'm not a commercial grower, so I use what I learn through trial and error. Thanks for your comment, I appreciate it.
Cutting off the small watermelon does reroute energy back into the remaining watermelon, but you could have left the leaves, because not only do they not take energy away from the fruit, but they actually add more energy through photosynthesis.
Hello Malleus, Thanks for the information. So when I cut the vine, the melon got bigger because there was no more melons on that vine. I will try to pull the small melons off the vine and compare the results.
Can u replant the watermelon u cut off
@@dariuswhite3002 No, that doesn't work with watermelons. You can pick suckers off of tomatoes and plant those if you want. It's a good way to guarantee the genetics of a certain plant that has characteristics you like.
@@dariuswhite3002 Too much work.
Thank you I appreciate your information.
I would suggest getting a jump on cutting suckers and extra fruit as soon as you can because if you let them go too long, it'll be a spaghetti bowl of vines and it's a pain in the ass to try and trace the main stem to cut suckers etc. Next year I'll have to stay on top of it. My vines got out of control and it's a painstaking process to clean them up. Thanks for sharing!
HELLO Trilldan, yes, the vines will go all over the place. It can be a big mess. Thanks for watching and commenting.

Who doesn’t like watermelon. I’m retired and grow many cucurbits. Out in my little garden every day scouting for squash bugs borers and eggs. Limiting vegetation by removing suckers helps and allowing vines on bark mulch keep’s fruit off dirt growing healthy. Great content and great presentation skills.

Hey Bear, Another new viewer here. Nice work both in the garden and on the video channel! I'm a northern neighbour - Okanagan Valley BC. We get to well over 100 in the summer (your temp scale) but down to -30 in the winter! I'm trying watermelons for the first time and this video will help. I shared your pruning advice to my Facebook gardening page. I have a long storage watermelon I developed that is having smaller watermelons each successive season and I think this will help.
HELLO, Robert, sounds good. I hope this will work for you. Thanks for sharing the pruning advice and watching the video.
Wound up here by chance. Nice video, lots of info. Thanks for the suggestions...
HEY Craig!!! Thanks, I'm glad you like the video and the information. It's great that you made it to my channel by chance.
Fantastic tutorial 👌 Thank you! This is my first time ever starting all from seed. What tips can you or any of you with green thumbs give me on soil, feeding, honestly anything 😊 If I get just one, I will be a happy lady! 🍉 🍉 🍉 🍉 🍉 🍉 🍉 🍉
HELLO Nan's Fam, thank you for the wonderful comment. Are you starting from seed inside? If so, don't forget to harden off your plants. Make sure to feed the plants when they are in the ground. I give them fish fertilizer for nitrogen until they start to bloom. Then, I use compost tea. Everyone asks how often to water, but that's hard to say because everyone climate is different. You might try to mulch your plants. I would mulch some and not mulch some to see if it makes a difference. I can get away with not watering for a long time. Also, monitor your plants for bugs, especially that squash bug. You will get some melons. If you have any questions throughout the process, just let me know. If I know the answer, I will definitely give it. Grow Something Tasty and have fun doing it.
@@GrowSomethingTasty I am going to direct sow. Hope it's not too early. Growing the Crimson watermelon. I have never seen a squash bug! Would neem oil work for this? Regular potting soil ammendment? Thank you so much!
@Nan's Fam Okay, direct sowing is good. I think I can get started in another week or so. I may start hardening my seedlings off soon. I use blood meal and garden tone fertilizer for soil amendments. Good, you have not seen a squashbug. They love squash and watermelon plants. I would check under leaves to make sure they lay bronzes colored eggs in clusters. The adult bug looks like a stink bug.
Thank you for the tips. Those trees look nice in the backround. Lol. Look's like your climate has good weather .
HELLO Jacob's, no problem, you are welcome. My trees are growing, thanks, but this year, I had issues with fireblight with 3 pear trees. I might pull 2 out, but my other trees are resistant to it, they say. Yes, the weather is good and hot. How about your weather? Thanks for watching and commenting.
Awesome…very informative…Thanks for sharing…just connected…Salute!!!🍃🍃🍃
HELLO Black guns and gardens, I appreciate it. Thanks for watching and commenting.
Gotta say man: Those vines and melons look wonderful. I'm going to try and follow some of your advice. Directions on my plants called for Mounding. I am not sure they need to be mounded. Yours sure look wonderful I must say. Definitely a thumbs up..
Thanks, again Craig. Yes, it says to mound the watermelons on all seed packets. I'm sure it works but I have stopped doing it. You are not the first person to talk to me about mounding. I'm thinking about doing a video on that topic. I know you said you are new to my channel, I'm having a mole and vole issue this year. They are messing up my garden, especially my melon plans. I'm going mad but this Wednesday I have a video coming out where I did something a little crazy to protect my melon plant. I think it might work.
I am trying to grow watermelons for the 2023 gardening season. Last year I got vines but know watermelon. I found you during my search on how to achieve this. Yes, I would have thought to keep the small one on the vine without cutting it thinking I would have more. So that was a good tip. My question is how to get it to grow a watermelon from the flower? I had flowers but it never grew a watermelon. I was thinking I needed to perhaps have pollinating flowers around in order for the bees to come and pollinate the flower of the watermelon (which I plan to do). I would love to see how you make your compost tea. Thanks for the tips.
HELLO RB the Garden Nanny, you answered your own question. You should plant flowers to bring the bees to pollinate the flowers. If you don' see any bees you can hand pollinate the flowers by picking the male flower and rub it inside the female flower. I'll do a compost tea video for you. I will check to see if I have a video on that (I might not have one). Thank viewing and leaving a comment. You will get some watermelons this year!!! Take Care, RB
@@GrowSomethingTastythanks so much. I've been researching and the pollination part is where I have been going wrong. I just plant it and forget it. Even though my garden is full of flowers I guess it's not close enough to the watermelon. Yes, I think I will do both. I'm determined this year. I do have a compost tumbler and at the bottom the juices run down in the bottom and collect there. That's the only compost tea that I get but I would love to know how to make it other than just that. Thanks again for replying.
@RB the Garden Nanny, LLC Hey, I do have a video on making it. If you search how to make compost tea and type bear brown, the video will come up.
in my case there is no bees in my area so I pollinated the flowers, there are many videos that shows how to do manually
Dang I didn’t know I was supposed to cut them back but I’ve had good luck just watering and feeding them regularly
Thanks for the information I’m going to try it next year 😊
HEY Philliphall!!! You don't have too but I like how big they get after cutting them. I like to manage my area somewhat.
Thanks for the tips! This is my first year trying to grow watermelons and I was sad there are only 3 but my vines went crazy so tonight I went out and found so many of those suckers and got rid of them. It IS painful but I'd rather have a few really good watermelons than a dozen duds. Such great information!! Thank you again!!
Hey no problem Mojo's Feisty Flock, glad you can use the info. Let me know how your melons turn out.
Watermelon season baby🎉🎉
HEY, Youngincooley!!! You got that right!!!!! My favorite time.
My grandfather always grew a huge patch of very large watermelons in the 1970s. I remember them talking about some of them growing to 75 pounds. My mom loved the yellow meated watermelons and the good thing about those is they were almost always sweet long before official picking time. I`d get up early in the mornings while the melons were still chilled by the cool nighttime air and eat some smaller ones right in the field. I should have bought seeds for that type this year. I have some Sugar Baby seeds so I guess I`ll just try those.
I need to start a couple of rows of pole beans and some various cucumbers I`ve never tried and pick a good spot for a few types of heirloom corn seeds that came in a variety pack, plus I have a lot of weird seeds I`ve never tried before like Sorghum, buckwheat, lentils, and more. Trying new things and hoping to get some high quality food cheap.
I have Clemson Spineless okra, bush snap beans, yellow squash, radishes, Sugar Snap Peas, and some Spacemaster cucumbers planted right now, and later today I`m doing a row of Red Burgundy and Jambalaya okra and planting the few Mississippi Purple Hull peas I have to get more seeds.
I planted some Sun Choke tubers around here for a future emergency food supply and got a Brown Turkey Fig tree planted last month plus I tossed some Amaranth seeds around and planted Jicama and Moringa tree seeds. I`m waiting on some soil for some planters I just got to put some Tiny Tim cherry tomatoes in and more radishes.
Hello Ban, Everything, moringa seeds, I just did the same thing. I had them last year and did not plant them. Yes, the yellow watermelons are great. I have seeds but did not plant any. Now you are making change my mind to plant them. I can't have watermelons everywhere, or can I. It seems like you have a plan in place. I thought about okra, but I'll have to see. Do you have problems with my enemy, the squash bug? I hope all your seeds and plants do well.
@@GrowSomethingTasty Vine borers are the ones I hate. Gonna try again this year to grow squash and wrap foil around their stems. We have bad infestations of squash bugs too. They gave my cucumbers a disease one year. There were hundreds all over the vines. Japanese beetles are terrible here too. They eat my greens at night. Even in Winter because I think they live in the soil to stay unfrozen.
Oh yes, I had to perform surgery on my plants to get those vine bores. I have used the foil, and it helps, but I did not do it last year, and I got the bores. I have not figured out a way to beat the squash bugs. Who every makes something to deal with them, will become a billionaire.
@Gardening with Bear Brown
I would recommend getting Jerusalem Artichokes to make an all natural pesticide. Check out the channel Garden Like A Viking to see the process of brewing the concentration for use. You can also grow and eat them. There's 2 other plants that are also basically a universal repellant but I think the artichokes will be best for the US and what you'll prefer. Some herbs may be helpful as well but I'm not sure how they compete and might affect the growth of watermelons. (mint, thyme, basil, etc). Marigolds are also a pretty good repellant for many types of insects.
Thank you . I was wondering why my watermelon were growing small even now they should have gotten bigger. I will start on this today. Thanks so much ❤ 🍉
HELLO Tonya, you are welcome. Let me know when you see some noticeable growth. Or if you don't see any. I hope it works out for you . Thanks for watching and commenting.
Have you ever thought about using a tree trimmer to cut the suckers off on the vines you can't reach without distruring the plant?

I appreciate your info. Just a question: After doing what you have to do, how many fruits do you allow per plant so as to get big fruits such as the one you are showing?
Hey Brother Lee, thanks. Hey, I would leave 2 melons per plant on different vines if you trying to get them big as possible. If you grow a lot of plants, you can try to have just one on. You can also make compost tea and use that to water the plants. You don't have to do that but if your soil is not the best I would. Also buy watermelon seeds that grow to be a decent sized. I'm going to by the Carolina Cross melons to see how big I can get one of those.

HELLO Roger, you are welcome. I hope it goes well for you. Let me know how it goes. I'm releasing a watermelon video later today.
NEW SUBSCRIBER. My watermelon crop is out of control. Almost waist high and pushing vines everywhere. My melons are forming on the vine. I've got a 140' by 140' area these monsters totally overwhelmed me near Fort Worth. I had dug out a trench to fill my raised garden beds. Our summer has been 100 degrees plus with no rain. Lost my other garden stuff due to stress.
The trench was about shovel deep. So I made some hills in the trench. I threw some mulch around them after they came up. Like grass clippings. I threw some fertilizer in the trench. I have thrown lime on them and coffee grounds. About 3 in the afternoon the tall oak tree shade hits the vines. I fill the trench up with water about every 2 days. Best to ya partner. Eaglegards...
They grow out of control. Do you have problems with Squash bugs on your melon plants? Sorry to hear about other garden plants not making it. That mulch helps a lot. I am going to get some more sometime this year. Hope you get lots of melons. Best to you.

HELLO @sshumakaer, scorching is not good. I think if there is fungus on plants, watering could spread it. Thanks for watching and commenting.
New sub. And like many other commenters, 1st yr growing. Brought seeslings after many failed attempts to germinate 🤞🏾🙏🏾🤞🏾🙏🏾🙌🏾
HELLO Reggie, welcome to the channel. Thanks for watching and subscribing. I appreciate it. I want to know how your first year goes. Since your seeds did not germinate next time, try soaking them in water for 3 hrs and see if that helps. The seeds could have been a bad batch.
Thanks these tips really help, New here supporting & learning from zone5 👏🏽Great job Soil Brother 😎👍🏽 awesome set up
HELLO, thanks for watching and commenting. I'm glad it helps. I really appreciate your comment Soil Sister, the day was a rough one. It really helped.

Hello Andy Parker, I'm glad it helps let me know how it goes for you.
Great video I love and needed the details. What zone are you in? Those melons are gorgeous.

I just played twister with my watermelon plants clipping vines and suckers. It hurts but I want the biggun 😄
HELLO Kristan, yes, it hurts at first, but when you get a biggun, it is easy to do from then on. Hopefully, I'll have a melon harvest video out today. I was shocked on the video. It was a special watermelon.
thank you o much ......learned a lot..Hey ....from far out farm. I can't wait to watch more.
HELLO Maria, thanks for watching. I glad you learned something. Cool, I'm glad you want to watch more. I have a video coming out later today.
Thanks my man!
HELLO Tha2nd, no problem. You are welcome. Thanks for watching!!!
@@GrowSomethingTasty does this apply to cantaloupe & other melons when it comes to chop extra vine off to revert energy to the melon location?
@TimmerTheChipper I have not tried with cantaloupes because they are a lot smaller, and I'm greedy with them. I bet it's the same.
Your evidence is so clear ❤
HELLO Prophet Etta Jephthah, I appreciate it. Thanks for your comment and watching.
Thank you for the tips. This is my first year growing watermelons.
HELLO, MC-qb1jg, you are welcome. I hope you get some nice watermelons. They taste so good especially from your backyard. Let me know how it goes or grows I should say.
Very interesting stuff. Keep up the great posts
HELLO Raywil98, thanks for the support. I will try my best to keep it up. I appreciate you watching and commenting.
This is my first year my wife and I are trying watermelons in our garden!. We put 2 plants in but only 1 plant sprouted 1 melon so far. Im hoping that changes!
HEY Bobby!!! I hope you get me as well. If you are getting flowers, it could be the lack of pollinators. If you are not getting flowers, it could be too much nitrogen.
You can use those cutting to produce more vine
HEY Cash!!! What's the secret? I have tried it, and it did not work for me. I will keep trying until I get it.
So... New here. Grew my first watermelons after watching the videos here. They were great.! However, after I cut off my two watermelons.... The plant started growing like crazy! New flowers and fruit everywhere. Now I have more growing. Can get a second Harvest????
HEY @AJTundra!!!! I'm glad they were great melons. Yes, you can get another harvest if you still have warm weather.
I just cut a strawberry watermelon vine. Let's see how this works!!
HELLO Karla, a strawberry watermelon. Say what? I got to look that up and get some seeds for next year. Let me know how it goes.
Thank you for sharing your experience❤
HELLO AnnaN, anytime. Thank you for watching and commenting.
Good morning.i had planted 🍉 2 years ago and it was so Good now I am trying canlope and watermelon in the same patch is that a good idea this is my first time planting canlope and planting them together.
HEY, BARBARA!!! I plant in rows, and one of my watermelon rows is right beside my cantaloupe row. I have never had a problem yet, so I think you are OK.
Slugo slug and snail plus kills squash bugs. I don’t have slugs or snails but I use it. Also phosphorus kills them too
Thanks for the info, Denise. You don't have slugs, that is great. They ate up my strawberries last year.
@@GrowSomethingTasty we moved from the western part of Washington where we had many slugs and snails. We then moved last year to eastern Washington state where it’s hot and dry. We have grass hoppers but not bad. No snails or slugs maybe tiny black slugs in the spring but it gets to hot for them here. It is in the 100 degree mark in summer. It doesn’t rain here is it does it’s only for a minute or so. I learned about the Slugo slug and snail plus from living on the west side of the state. They were bad there and also earwigs were awful. We also have them here terribly. They eat my dahlias like they are the last thing on earth. But Slugo to the rescue. I swear by it. They also make Slugo max but I can’t get it mailed here for some reason. But all that is is phosphorus triple phosphorus works to kill Beatles too . That’s what the max has in it plus all the other ingredients for Slugo plus. So I use that and add phosphorus. I found many dead squash Beatles the day before after using that . Try it you will be hooked . No more Beatle bugs or slugs to speak of. By the way they used to call me the slug lady lol. Id be out at night with my light on my head and my hand held spear killing slugs. The neighbors thought I was nuts lol 😂. That’s at my old house. I’m safe from the insane asylum here 😂 lol . Good times my friend good times. ❤️
Nice ! Juice Juice...thanks for the tips and all hard work you put in your videos man.
THANKS, MAN!!! I try my best to put out good information and try to get to the point as fast as I can. I looked at some of my first videos, and it was hard to watch, lol. Thanks again for the support.
Can you please put out a video telling us how to start growing water mellows from scratch please
Urceline, if you mean how I plant them, I have a video called "How to plant watermelons?" Type that and Bear Brown it will come up. I think I did a playlist for my melons. I will update it again. I have a watermelon video coming out tomorrow. Something new, I'm trying. I forgot in my other response to you, I have a video on why watermelons are splitting. If that is your problem, type that and my name. It will come up.
Oh man, I wish I saw this earlier. The vines have taken over and I can't even find the melons at this point. 😂
HEY @tomaittoe!!! You will still get some nice-sized melons like that. When too many melons are on a vine, the size will get smaller. If your soil is rich in nutrients it's going to be good. I do use pruning to keep them organized as well.
