- support your melons. Cantaloupe, watermelon, honeydew, doesn’t matter, even squash! Supporting them when growing vertically is important and a vital step to ensuring they can be safely grown to completion. Here is a super simple and cheap way to do it. Check out our new clothing line! http:www.freshpickedapparel.com
I re-use the mesh bags produce comes in. Just cut one end to get at the produce and keep the bag intact. Then use s-hooks to link the mesh bag to the trellis. No tying involved and keeps the mesh bags out of the landfill.
Great idea!! I save those bags. Now I have another use for them!
I use those mesh bags too only I’ve been using zip ties, I like your s hook idea better 👍
Me too
Good tip. I'm going to try that. Thanks.
Another good idea.
NEW MI GARDENER T SHIRT LOGO: SUPPORT YOUR MELONS
I will pay money for that!
"You are beautiful melon and I believe in you..." I whisper to my cantaloupe in a bra for extra support. 😁
Barb Jacobs LOL!!! You can never have too much support ❣️
@@dianetucker2711 they will be extra sweet if you are sweet to them haha
I showed my husband the title, we both giggled.
😂
🤣
Ur funny😜

I've never commented on this channel before but I feel the need to do so now. I've been listening to you all summer (usually while gardening) and I've learned many, many things from you, your expertise, and your simple explanations.i live in Ohio, so your growing conditions are very similar to mine.
Just wanted to say thank you MIGardener! 💜🙏🏼
O-H!
@@Maxaldojo I-O!
So happy you’re finally having success with your melons 🍈😆
The irony of a man telling me to support my melons. 😅
Suzanna Poplawski the man just cares about our melon health. 😅😂
As an old guy, I no longer concern myself with that. “Swing low,...”
Very happy your melons are doing so well for you this summer. Quite surprised you got through this video with as little laughter as you did❣️As always, great video, thanks 🥰
I make little hammocks out of old tee shirts for my cantaloupe ✌
You’re my favorite gardening geek. And I mean that with all the love in my heart
I love your humor! I have heard of this but it was very helpful to see it done! Thanks for sharing all your tips! 👏🏻👏🏻👍🏻👍🏻
I'm growing cantaloupe for the first time as well! And I've been using nylons in the same exact way. We just harvested one today and I can't wait to dig into it.
I"m glad someone is getting melons and in Michigan no doubt. Good job sir!
The garden club would be giggling over the use of bras for my melons....which I will do! thank you!
Oh, Luke, you're so silly! Loved it! As usual, very informative.
Are you spying on me? I just finished putting up melon hammocks on our cantaloupe fence this morning. Great video, thanks Luke.
Gardening erotica... Luke is always innovating new methods. Well done!
lol
Luke, I was just looking at 3 nice cantaloupes on trellises and was wondering if and how I should support them! And, here you are with a video... Thank you, very much.
I can’t wait to try this trellis cantaloupe trick next year! This year we planted right in the garden. We have 7-8 from one $1 plant. They’re spreading out everywhere and we have an electric fence around the garden so hopefully we’ll have a few good cantaloupe success. But next year I’ll need to support my melons 😋
Okay, I've definitely always saved my old nylons to use in the garden, but I never thought of using my worn out bras! Maybe I'll give that a try, too :)
Thank you for this. This year is my first time growing melons on a trellis. I hadn't even thought about supporting them until I saw the first good sized one on the vine.
I will be trying this method with my garden this year. Thanks for sharing the video.
Comic relief 😃 Great idea. I've got my first successful melons too. Can't wait. Thanks, Luke 😊
Thank you so much! I needed this. I will definitely get some dollar store pantyhose and stockings for my sugar baby watermelon and cantaloupe. Great idea!!
You may consider using the netting part of bags for produce purchased at the store, such as potatoes, oranges, grapes rather than buy nylons. Ask friends and relatives to save them. Water still drains out, and air circulates. Easy to tie to the trellis as well. Just another idea. New to your channel, and I really like it. Thanks!
I'm doing this next year. First gardener here, and my one watermelon plant has literally taken over the entire back yard.
I feel your pain. First time gardener here and I thought I needed a watermelon and 4 cantaloupes lol. Need a machete to get in there.
I love the care you gave the melons 😄 seriously though, thanks for the info
So funny...i just got the nylons out this morning to prep them for the watermelons 🍉
I started a backyard garden back in 1978, Sacramento, college student years. Smallish land area, had planted the cantaloupe (fortunately) by the rear fence. I used my daughter's diapers to tack the cantaloupe hangers to the fence - worked great! Had no idea what to do, but logic and luck prevailed. Today, 2021, I'm planting in a 5' x 3' raised bed in rural Tulare Co. (now living in the orange & olive groves east of Lindsay, CA) and will make a trellis of 2 x 4 frame w/ furring strip cross bars. Haven't grown cantaloupe since '78, ought to still do fine. Very nice video, and thrift stores for cheap materials is a great idea.
Growing cantaloupe and hope I will be using this trick in a couple of months! Than kyou!
Thanks, great idea. This will be my 1st year growing Cantaloupe.
This will work for Acorn Squash too.
Starting cantaloupe for the first time next season, thanks for the info. Can't wait to support my monster melons 😋
I used a bit of landscape fabric to make hammocks for my cantaloupes, not as stretchy as pantyhose but that's working out well too.
I am really thankful that you took the time to show us. So often I hear that it can be done but
, I couldn't picture how.
great Idea Luke I am growing honey dew myself I well definitely use that tip
Great tips. I have cantaloupe volunteers flowering now that grew from the compost column in my keyhole garden. I'll use a sling for sure.
I crocheted some mesh hammocks but haven’t had do use them yet.
Thanks for the epic idea! I got tons of yarn left over from different projects that I could use!
Ester Loeve welcome!! There’s also some really cool crochet ideas here on UA-cam for indoor hanging plant hangers!😊🌱🌼
cute!
I made some macrame hammocks. Haven had to use it. The highest ones are about a foot teeterring above a bed of straw.
i bet they will be so cute like the melons have a blanket or a sweater !
We had our first cantaloupe this week in northen Indiana weighed in at 10lbs 2ounces.
Thanks for all the great tips all the time we did ours on a traditional large mound style.
Add to this we've had 3 more molons at 10lbs one was just over 11lbs so fun!
Wow. 10 lbs. Impressive. I had a 20 lb Zucchini last year that was 2 ft long and hardly had any seeds which surprised me. It was hidden and almost scared me when I found it. Lol. Made like 10 loaves of bread from it. Good stuff.
@@anthonyskinner3338 It was so big it almost maxed out my 11 pound kitchen scale
I had great cantaloupes that crawled up my chain link fence. They were volunteers and the best with abundance crop. I used old lace netting and that worked great. And that was Midwest Kansas.
That's a great idea I am growing my small Water melons on the same type trellis.
This made alot of since compared to what I've seen on other channels. Thanks 😁
Found a melon growing among the cucumber vines because I had put home made compost in the garden.
Just in time for the nylon hammock supporter you suggested!
Whoa, your melons are doing amazing! So happy for you!
I have my first two cantaloupes and I also have one melon on the vine watermelon. 🤗
Wow, those melons and the plants look so healthy. You did a great job growing them. I've never grown melons before, maybe in a not-to-distant future garden. Love the cattle panels as trellises. You know, I was looking for seeds on your site. As with other seed sellers, a lot are out of stock. I hope they'll be coming back into stock soon. See you next video!
Very good , I am impressed and will give this a try. Thanks
This is a great idea. Mine arent ready yet but I cant wait to try this. Thank you so much. Blessings
Shalom sis he is so informative, I've learned so much about planting from him.
Great tutorial.
I’m going to play around with netting vs cattle panel/trellis. Think the ability to hang and have it flow is going to offer up some cool possibilities
Wow - Congrats on growing these ! Happy for you : )
Also, what a Great TIP (using nylons) - Thank-you !!
i have done this for ages with melons. i just wish i could use the same support technique for my melons...!
LOL!
Beautiful sunflowers in the background!
Great idea I'm going to have to try that one thanks man
That is the craziest thing I have ever seen. Love it
We need a MIGardner shirt with “Support your melons” on it picture of a cantaloupe would be a plus.
Thank you for this very helpful and informative video.
Thanks for the laugh and the great advice!
Love this channel 👍
Middle school humor 🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣 I’m so glad I decided to buy some cantaloupe seeds and thus found your video!
Nice idea, good job! I like it!!
Thanks, this is absolutely great an idea! The giggling continues 🤣🤣🤣🤣
Doing this with my winter squash! I saved a bunch of mesh onion bags but don't remember where I put them lol!
Thank you very much . I am growing melons. Very good
I used mesh fabric and zip ties. It works very well for me. I just got my first 2 kajari melons today and they smell amazing. I’m saving them for dessert tonight.
I like the mesh because it is reusable as well. I will probably make full hammocks out of it.
I just did this with one if my acorn squash plants and need to do it with another still. I grew them upwards to try and keep them out of my way but the squash this year are huge! Hopefully I can get them to maturity this way!
Wonderful idea, ty!
Great idea!
😂🤣 Hilarious and informative! I love it!
Lol🤣😂🤣 I'm growing cantaloupe, water melons, and various squash on our trellis and I put mine in a plus size nylon and tie it to the trellis. Your method maybe easier though. Love your channel!
I built a trellis using wood to make a frame similar to a folding room divider, and put plastic netting on it. I made hammocks out of the same netting material and it is very strong and allows a lot of air flow.
Cut nylons 8 in knot end slide over melon use tomatoe clip to hold up works real well
Great idea! Ty
Great idea. Thank you.
Genius! Thank you!
Really good video. Thanks!
😂 this made me laugh. Thanks for the info Luke!
Aloha so really funny Bless your heart and family 🌺🤗🏖🦎
Thank you for this video!!!
Great information!
Now I know what to do with my old bras 😆, neighbors will think I've gone cuckoo 🤣
I save and use the bags I buy my Onions in and use those with S hooks
thats a good tip! thanks!
Gonna probably need this information I'm going to attempt to grow cantaloupe too. 👍
Thank you, great idea🍈
Use a face mask we all have them now lol
Oh wow that would be perfect!
Love that idea! Thanks!!
Great job
Thank you for this timely tip! You have an amazing crop, Luke!
A few weeks ago I followed your previous “nylons” advice and supported several of my cantaloupes by putting them inside knee-high stockings and tying them to the trellis. Is that a bad thing? I do have several more to do & planned to do the same bc I like the protection from critters & pests the stocking provides.
This is my second try this year with Cantaloupe. Last time was not very good. Looking better this year.
Just what I needed
3:44 i had to stop the video so i could catch my breath. You funny
Support those melons ladies! Jokes aside, great video!
you have me dying from the beginning w middle school humor regarding melons...im 36 and still belong in middle school...#supportyourmelons
I put a bucket of water under a couple cantaloupe last year. I have watermelon this year so I got some mesh hangers from Amazon .
Very nice!
Good advice. 👍
Thank you!
I do this with pumpkins. I grow mine on a trellis same as my watermelon.
Good video. Good comedy too.
great info
Hey .. everyone Moniee-Mon, is listening thanks for the info vedios keep doing what'cha do best God bless ya!.
