Awesome video, I tried my hand at growing watermelons this year in my back yard. I've never seen my kids so happy and focus on gardening until they popped out the ground,
I talked to you last year about growing watermelons and yes I have to agree less is more and the size of the watermelon is more satisfying. Thanks for all your advice Bear Brown 👍
@@GrowSomethingTasty I found a new package of watermelon seeds so I planted 12-14 of them around the property and while I was at it I planted some pumpkin seeds I will let you know how things work out later this year.
I tried something new this year..instead of planting them in my garden, I used my tiller and spaced 12 big holes at the end of my garden, made hills and planted 3 per hole. Theyre looking great in the virgin soil and i know they'll appreciate all the free space
I dont know why but UA-cam sent me here. I think they did it for the watermelons but I am admiring the woodchips covering the ground and making sure no ground goes exposed to the sun. 👍
Garlic , mint , lavender and some others are good for keeping pest away. Also if you can get an abundance of ladybugs, or praying mantis. They will do a clean sweep on pest.👍
If I may add something u wanna add that won’t take things over, marigold & basil. Marigold releases a scent in the soil that drives pest away. I never liked the look of marigolds but they have a ton of varieties. I got a BEAUTIFUL sugar & spice variety & another called Kilimanjaro white.. their heirloom varieties (which means no GmOs) I get em from baker creek!!
I just got my garden planted this weekend. Trying again to grow some melons this year. Doing the 2 per plant this time. Can’t wait. Thank you for the video. 🙏
I planted sugar babies and sugar pumpkins for the first time this year. So far they look good. I used garden soil and home made compost to get them going. I love your pest control system! Thank you for sharing your knowledge with us.
HELLO Jessie, that is great to hear. Let me know how your melon and pumpkins turn out. I'm working on a video showing how I make it from start to finish, so look out for it in a couple of weeks. Hey, I love to share this information. Thanks for watching and commenting.
It is so nice to see African American gardner’s, I’m new to this garden life and planted watermelon. I see about 8 so far and now after listening to you I may have to cut them?? I don’t want huge melons 🍉 but I want them to thrive and taste delicious
@teatalkwithyagyrl HELLO Teatalkwithagyrl, you're new to gardening. That's great. I try to get more of my friends and family to do it. They think they will kill all the plants. Keep growing, and you might as well start pruning the vines. Hey, you can try it on one plant and compare the difference. Let me know how it grows. Thanks for watching and commenting.
I hope you enjoyed your days off! Nothing like garden time. I’m excited to grow some watermelons again here in Minnesota zone 4. I grew small varieties last year. But this year I’m trying some big varieties! Now I know to expect one per vine. Thanks for the info!
Greetings from Minnesota also! I’m growing a watermelon plant right now. Started it indoors in March. It’s outside in a 5 gallon pot and has both male and female flowers on it already 🙌🏼
HELLO Jasmine, that's great. I'm glad you are going to try it next year. I'll be here to help. Thanks for watching and commenting. Have a great day, Jasmine.
I just stumbled across your channel. I have 5 watermelon plants growing. Can't wait to see how they do. I'm also about to binge all of your melon growing videos from last year. Fingers crossed that this Mississippi heat gives me some good melons!
I, too, am trying my hand at growing melons. My husband just found this video for me, and we watched it. I am new at this and have multiple plants in one pot, about 4-7 inches tall. My challenge will be getting them all out without damaging the roots and plants, then transferring them to the ground. Any suggestions?
@patrese1hopkins451 I think some of the roots will get damaged. The roots are mostly likely entangled. You can try taking the entire soil out of the container and get the water hose, and wash the soil away gently until the soil is gone and remove them that way. The other option is just to grab the soil and break them up that way.
First time I grew the Crimson Sweet variety, ( those are 35 lb melons on average) I didn't know you had to prune them. I used chicken manure for fertilizer, and man! I had vines for 2 blocks. The vines were growing up my fence into the neighbor's yard.... I had a lot of watermelons but they were smaller and the flavor and sweetness was lacking. Watermelons are heavy feeders, and I fertilize them every two weeks..Going for the sugar babies this year...Thanks Bear.
Michael, you don't have too but they vines are going to run like you said. You will have more melons, but they will be smaller because there are so many. I prune for size now and to stop the jungle of vines, lol. Thanks for commenting and watching.
Really good advice right on time thank you, my family and i love us some melons we buy so much each year now we have space to grow and will be trying to grow our own.
HELLO Sunshine Garden, I'm glad the video was helpful and informative. Thank you for watching and commenting. I appreciate it. Good luck growing those watermelons.
Thanks Bear ! Your a great teacher. It's my first year growing watermelons. Your tips should give me great success. Enjoy the summer in your garden my friend !

I am binge-watching everything you’ve posted about watermelons bc it is my FAVORITE fruit and I miss the delicious melons from when I was growing up in Mississippi bc the ones in the store are sad, watery, and always disappointing. Thank you thank you!!!!
Enjoyed your video. Keep up the good work. I believe I watched one of your vids last year on pruning watermelon plants to limit how many and the size. That two was very helpful in my first year of gardening. Need to rewatch it as I’m starting to see some female flowers pop up
HELLO Gary, thanks! I will try my best to keep up the good work. Yes, that pruning video was very helpful to a lot of people. I'm glad it was helpful to you. I get a few people who don't like what I said. You can't please everyone, and I'm cool with that.
Great information! I just found your channel and have watched about 5 of your videos. I've struggled growing watermelons over the last couple of years. I'm in zone 6 and thought that maybe my climate wasn't suitable. But after seeing some of your techniques I'm going to try this thing again. A quick tip that you might want to use in your garden...ad some flowers. Flowers or pollinators will help attract beneficial insects that will help control the insect pests and your wife will appreciate the beauty they bring to garden. Keep growing something tasty.
HELLO Jamaal!!! Yes, try it again!!! If you have a shorter growing season, pick some varieties that grow sooner. Thanks for the tip. I am going to try to plant flowers. Most of my flowers did not come up. I should have bought some. Let me know how your melon season goes. Thanks for watching and responding.
HELLO Yeshl2581, thanks for watching and commenting. I appreciate it. I hope you have great success with your melons. We just came back from vacation, and the melon patch has issues.
Also depends on particular seedling. Have had one produce around 8 decent sized melons, averaging around 20lbs off a species that can produce more than one flush before the stem gets too old.
HEY Steve, yes, some can handle more. The ones I grew in the past stated small, so I noticed it was best for me to prune . What varieties did you grow just in case someone asked about melons like that. I'll try it, too.
Nice presentation. Rough growin season in southeast Louisiana this year, or atleast for me. Had a couple melons crack because of the heat. My cantaloupe and honey dews are growing good now that the temp has come down to manageable levels. Now i have fruits growing everywhere and i was lookin for options. Thanks for your time and sharing some knowledge.

HELLO, Sandra, welcome welcome!!!! That must be a sign to plant watermelons, LOL. Thanks for subscribing, viewing, commenting, and thinking it's a great video. You are too kind.
In northern Illinois...planted water melons this year. My first attempt. Have 10 or melons on the vines. Should you prune to reduce number per vine or per plant? I planted 2 plants this spring and many vines running out from each plant. Largest two melons are 10-15 pounds..the rest are 5-6 pounds. Should I get rid of smaller ones? And how large or small can they be and still ripen and be edible?
HEY Rod!!! You are welcome. That's great, 4 or 5 or 6!!!!!! I have to go pull another one because of all this rain. I hope the rain does not bust my competition melon. I am covering the base of the plant and the melon. We will see. If it keeps growing I will win, I can feel it.
HELLO @ stephlang, I'm glad you started gardening. I'm glad you love the info. I have lots, especially on melons. Thanks for watching and commenting. I appreciate it.
Only pests i had to deal with on mine this year was deer, they trimmed my leaves up pretty good on few different vines. You are growing some nice melons and spreading good knowledge!
HELLO Andre, wow, deer will definitely trim your plants. I saw that on my ring camera in my front yard. I did not really plant in my raised bed this year. Thanks, I did not know if I was going to get melons due to the animals. Did you see my melon harvest video yesterday? That melon I cut into shocked me, man it looked good. Thanks again for watching and commenting.
Appreciate you sharing with the info. I been staying with your vidz on the channel. Good content , good tips and good energy! Im fixing to put down an acre of melons after a few years of experimenting with a smaller patch on my soil. Im in central flroida and have this ole surgar sand soli here but these melons love it. I use fish fertilizer and water that in by hand. Ive found it safe enough to fertilize over the leaves if i water the crop directly after basically washing off the leaves. My 1 acre crop im using drip hose to the main stock vine. Basically your advice has got me to the point im at now and everything is going smooth. For pest im raking up all this spearment that grows on the south side of my property and spreading it around. No worms.
HEY, John!!! I really appreciate your support. I'm glad you like the content and that it is helpful. Wow, you are planting an acre of melons. That is nice. What are you going to do with all those melons? If you sell some you can make a nice profit. I love using fish fertilizer as well as compost tea. Let me know how the acre of melons goes.
Thank you so much! I’m growing miniature melons and large melons…we will see how it plays out but I am going try to keep one melon to a vine and only keep five vines.
HELLO Jamie, yes, it's painful. It took me years to do this. Hey, you can compare your plants and see if it's a difference. You can prune a plant and leave a plant to see what happens. Thanks for watching and commenting.
HELLO SIX figure bookkeeper, no problem. I get that question a lot, so I made a video. It was a great question. Thanks for watching and commenting. I appreciate it.
I don't know how you came up on my feed but I'm happy you did thank you very much for your tip I'm so looking forward to when I can start growing just a quick question though what part are you in zone wise?
HELLO cintie45, I'm glad I came up in your feed as well. I'm in zone 8A. What is your zone? When can you start growing? Thanks for watching and commenting!!!!
@@meka5163 how are yours coming along? I’ve attempted a garden 3 times “in ground” but our soil if ya can call it that is mostly sand. So couldn’t grow anything. And we have no shade so everything withered up. This year I’ve discovered “smart pots”. Who knew! And my tomatoes, potatoes, cucumbers, watermelons and honeydew are doing fantastic.
A vacuum cleaner works for squash bugs. Also soap spray will kill them. Removes the protective oil from their bodies and causes them to drown from the water. Use the extra strength (extra degreasing kind) like Dawn 4X. And mix it fairly strong.
Thanks for the information. I use the dawn spray. I have never tried a vacuum. I'm going to have to add that to my list of tactics. I appreciate you watching and commenting.
HELLO Gardening Today. I'm glad you that it was Awesome information. Thanks for watching and commenting. HEY, I did a little gardening today. Well, it was morning, but it's still today, lol
@Gardening with Bear Brown I got out and checked on things. So far things are looking ok. I got to put up my trellis for my tomatoes hopefully today or tomorrow. I don't want to wait like I did last year.
HEY, Dustin!!! I don't grow them. I keep saying I'm going to grow them. I have read that pruning the vines can help them get bigger and bury the cut end of the vine. I have not done it but have seen it. Hey, thanks, Dustin.
Ants got mine last year. I have some natural remedies I'm trying this year. Borax and sugar. Baking soda and powdered sugar. Both thinly laid by the anthill.
I love your videos. It would be nice if you would go live and we all plant watermelon together at the same next time year. I know we all live in different zones. We can all chime in every other week and talk about our progress. I think it would be fun. Just a suggestion
HELLO C-dub, thanks for the support. I'm glad you love the videos. Here you go with the going LIVE Suggestions. Yeah, I was going to do it, I got nervous, I guess. Thanks, I will put that on my list to do for sure next year. It might be a possibility this year. The first couple of runs will be rough. I'm glad I have people like you give suggestions because it pushes me to grow just like the garden. I appreciate it.
HELLO Neosho River Boy, I'm glad you like the videos. Yes, I try to keep them down and dirty. Thanks for the commenting and watching. I appreciate the support!!!
Hello Mr Brown, I’m glad to hear you had a couple of days off, I hope you got some well deserved rest. As usual I have a question; do you think it’s ok to plant those green onions in with the watermelon versus in the bottle?
I think it's okay, I have never done it. This is my first time with the bottle. I'm just not afraid to try new things. Some subscribers said to plant radishes around them to fight against the squash bugs
Ive heard guineas will eat squash bugs as well as ticks and dont bother the garden. My chickens ate the squash bugs , unless the neem/ hemp peppermint soap killed them? But they also ate my cherry tomatoes. Seen something I've never seen before this year. Sqaush bug eggs on a tomato leaf, Course I cut it off and threw it into a cup of dawn soap.
HEY, I don't have an update, but some have asked. I did not see bug pressure on that plant, but the plant died with a 70 lb melon on it. The onions did not stop field rats and rabbits. I did not know I had them. I have onions near my melons again. I'll see hiw it goes, but 2 plants were taken by voles. I was mad and nervous at the same time. Just new challenges I will conquer
HELLO Jason, hey, you got this. Let me know how it goes this season. Cool, when I started growing, I did a few plants as well. Thanks for viewing and commenting.
Good news and bad news if anybody wants to grow watermelons. Watermelons are arguably the hardest crop to grow. The good new is that if you accomplish it, you can give yourself a a pat on the back and consider it a major accomplishment. The biggest Carolina cross I grew was a paltry 80. A big watermelon, but small for a CC. I had much better luck growing cantaloupe which is a cake walk compared to watermelons. They can all but grow by themselves. BTW, the mites are there. You can see the squiggly lines snaking across a few of the leaves near the base of the plant. You can use all natural pest killers such as insecticidal soap so long as you do it early. If you have a bad infestation, you might have to use chemical pesticides. If you must so, do it as early in the growing season, before the fruit starts to grown. Unfortunately, that's typically when the pests come. You really need to check the plants every single day for pests since if they get a chance to multiply, you will likely lose your entire crop. When it comes to melons, most of the evil bugger live underneath the leave.
HEY, Krane!!! It is awesome that you grew an 80-pound melon. I want to grow one of those. The rabbits ate the melon plant. I check the leaves bout when thru grow all over. I can't check all of them. I'm worried I might break some vines.
I really enjoyed your video. Trying to grow watermelon for the first time ever… I loved ur idea with the onions!! I wonder if u can do that with garlic too or will it affect the watermelon flavor?
HELLO Victoria, I believe you can do it, and it's not an issue. I had garlic in pots around my plants this year. That's great you are growing watermelons for the first time. Thanks for watching and commenting.

Thank you for the info sir. I'm trying to grow a melon or two or three.
HEY Rod!!! You are welcome. That's great, 4 or 5 or 6!!!!!! I have to go pull another one because of all this rain. I hope the rain does not bust my competition melon. I am covering the base of the plant and the melon. We will see. If it keeps growing I will win, I can feel it.
First year gardener here ❤❤❤ love the info 🎉❤🎉
HELLO @ stephlang, I'm glad you started gardening. I'm glad you love the info. I have lots, especially on melons. Thanks for watching and commenting. I appreciate it.
@@GrowSomethingTasty absolutely ♥️
Only pests i had to deal with on mine this year was deer, they trimmed my leaves up pretty good on few different vines. You are growing some nice melons and spreading good knowledge!
HELLO Andre, wow, deer will definitely trim your plants. I saw that on my ring camera in my front yard. I did not really plant in my raised bed this year. Thanks, I did not know if I was going to get melons due to the animals. Did you see my melon harvest video yesterday? That melon I cut into shocked me, man it looked good. Thanks again for watching and commenting.
@@GrowSomethingTasty Def going that video out
Very informative videos! Thank you Bear!
HEY Carson!!! I'm glad you like the video, you are welcome.
Yes sir they will be up for sell. Not trying to get rich , but they grow well and dont cost me much to put in.
Thank you so much! I’m growing miniature melons and large melons…we will see how it plays out but I am going try to keep one melon to a vine and only keep five vines.
HELLO Patricia, you are welcome. Let me know how it turns out. I can't wait to hear how it goes. Thanks for watching and commenting.
Thank you 🙏🏿
HELLO plenti4u, no problem. Thank you for watching and commenting!
This was very helpful! Thank you!
HELLO Julie, I'm glad that it was helpful. Thanks for watching and commenting. I appreciate it.
Thanks for the tips! I've got sugar baby melons setting right now, so looks like I need to get pruning (so painful tho!)😅
HELLO Jamie, yes, it's painful. It took me years to do this. Hey, you can compare your plants and see if it's a difference. You can prune a plant and leave a plant to see what happens. Thanks for watching and commenting.
Thank you for answering this question!
👏👏👌👍👋🇬🇷I WAS SURPRISED A W/MELON GREW PROM MY FLOWER POT. I THREW SEEDS. GREAT GREEN ONIONS PEST CONTROL!!
HELLO Anne, wow, that is awesome! Thanks, I like making the green onion bottle. I appreciate you watching and commenting.
Keep on keeping on Bear. Fabulous tip.
HEY Micheal!!!! Thanks for your comment. I really appreciate it.
Fantastic information. This is the first year I’m attempting watermelons 😅
HELLO Connie, thank you so much. Let me know how your 1st year growing watermelons goes. I definitely remember my first year!!
@@GrowSomethingTasty so far my little transplants look great. I’m building a trellis for them this weekend. Growing in pots
@connieserrano3947 What type of melons are you growing?
Me too
@@meka5163 how are yours coming along? I’ve attempted a garden 3 times “in ground” but our soil if ya can call it that is mostly sand. So couldn’t grow anything. And we have no shade so everything withered up. This year I’ve discovered “smart pots”. Who knew! And my tomatoes, potatoes, cucumbers, watermelons and honeydew are doing fantastic.
I learned something new today thanks for sharing
HELLO Maureenchavis, I'm glad you learned something new. That is awesome. Thanks for watching and commenting.
Thank you for answering my questions. I'm out to the garden to do two sugar babies per vine.
HEY Laurie!!! Anytime my friend. That's great it's good to be in the garden. Let me know how the sugar babies grow.
Thank you for sharing your very much guided video
HELLO Arshad, anytime, my friend. Thanks for watching and commenting. I appreciate it.
Great idea with the onion bottle
HELLO Homer, thanks for the comment and for watching. Hope it keeps the pest away.
Thank you.
HELLO Dora, you are welcome. Thanks for watching and commenting.
Thanks
HEY, RCThomas!!! Anytime.
Awesome information.Thanks for sharing.
Absolutely DOPE video💪🏽💪🏽🙏🏽
HEY Larry!!! Thanks, I appreciate it. I'm glad you like the video.
Great tips .. thanks , man . Ive had a tough time with them up here in the N. Ga mountains
HEY Ruffinogold!!! Thanks, I'm glad you liked the tips. I hope they grow well for you this season. Is the weather too rough on thr plants?
@@GrowSomethingTasty ... Its the powdery mildew thing and I think the clay soil doesn't help . Ill try the less is more approach 👍
Great video! Thanks for the advice
HEY Matt!! I appreciate it. Thanks.
Thank you
HELLO Richard, anytime. Thanks for watching and commenting.
Would pumpkins be the same? Just came across your video. You my friend are very informative!
HEY, DanlowMusic!!! I hope the natural remedies work for you. Ants can be a pain. They were all in my compost pile last year.
@@GrowSomethingTasty yeah we have 5 anthills on our 4 1/4 acres. They really are a pain.
I love your onion trick! I hope it works for you.
HELLO Sowingback, thanks. I hope it works as well. I appreciate your comment and for watching!!!!

HELLO FJAnews, thanks for the comment and for watching. I really appreciate it.
I’m going try it out thanks for sharing
HELLO Rio's yard, let me know how it works for you. Thanks for watching.
@@GrowSomethingTasty lol
We harvested four different watermelon varities from our Toronto backyard garden.
HELLO Hobby_bay, that is awesome. Harvest time is the best time. Are you planting the same varieties next time?
Yes, will try to find more varities next year@@GrowSomethingTasty
Ive watched a lot of watermelon videos, and your definitely my favorite. Good info, down and dirty. Thanks for sharing your experience
Ok thank you
Ive heard guineas will eat squash bugs as well as ticks and dont bother the garden.
Wow awesome video thanks for sharing 👍
HELLO Donna, thank you. I'm glad you liked the video. I appreciate it.
Yes twin, grow a competition sized watermelon!
I have been looking at doing that
Great video thank you🍉🍉
HELLO Tonetra's Garden, thank you. I appreciate it.
Love the onion idea man! is there an update to see if it worked>
This is my first year growing watermelons. Wish me luck! I'm only doing 3 plants and I was thinking I'd be fine with just a couple melons per plant.
HELLO Jason, hey, you got this. Let me know how it goes this season. Cool, when I started growing, I did a few plants as well. Thanks for viewing and commenting.
Best of luck to you 😊
Thank you for this wonderful video
Great idea!

Right on man thanks 😊
HELLO JOSHUA, thanks, man. I appreciate it.

It's great to have days off, enjoy. Yes, happy gardening. Let's get them in the ground. Thanks for commenting and leaving a comment.
Thanks for your video 😊
HELLO @gogobergie, anytime. Thank you for watching and commenting. I appreciate it.
I found out that cinnamon keeps all the bugs away. I put it on my plant and surrounding areas of my plants and it actually works.
HEY, Daughterofsarah!!! Cool, that is awesome. I wish it work for voles because they are killing me. I might try and see.
Voles are why I'm trying to plant most things in containers.
Thanks for sharing this 😎👍🏽
You are welcome. Glad to share.
