I really recommend watching the movie. There is SO much meaning being missed by almost every review I’ve seen, and Arianna has said that while she’s gonna make more music videos, this music video and the concepts of the film represent the whole album.
This isn’t a happy ending, they didn’t move on, they wiped their memories of each other because they could not bear the pain of the loss. In the end they didn’t recognize each other. It’s called Eternal Sunshine because you’re removing the hurt and anguish… kind of like ignorance is (false) bliss. While the memories are erased using meaningful objects that the brain react to, the main character travels through the moments associated with the items and see the relationship from outside themselves and start to erase, cope, and process the trauma. They value the wisdom and lessons and change their mind not wanting to go through with the experiment and desperately beg to keep certain memories (for her the necklace) but it’s too late. Even after erasing each other, they’re twin flames doomed to repeat history over and over again. Including falling in love, having a horrific break up (bc no lessons were learned due to the deletions), deleting each other, and finding each other as a strangers again. Rinse repeat. It’s actually tragic. Some lyrics in several other songs reference this doomed cycle in the album.

Ariana has been so resilient through her music and life in general and we had a hint of it through sweetener (my comfort album) but eternal sunshine specifically this song we could see how vulnerable and real she gotten. This music video might be her best to date 😢
