The reason IGA declared COTM non-canon is apparently because it was the only one of those Metroidvanias that he wasn't involved in. Plus, COTM is a great but pretty difficult game.

Mario Land sucked. It was such a bait and switch. Mario Land 2 however....amazing. Warioland...OMG and so forth
