Andy of Off Grid Garage, in Australia, has posted a recent video about this very phenomenon in his large, year old multi-cell storage bank. The bulging occurs parallel to the anodes, as do yours. He wasn't alarmed, nor interested in compression. Regards.

Thank you sir, great review. I don't mind concave, vs bloated! I am not that experienced with balancing but that balance (before balancing) seems terrible, suggesting low quality cells. I think I'll go with SOK due to the modular construction.

In a solar land where power thrives,
    Eco-worthy LifePO4 takes the dive,
With volts and amps, and cells of twelve,
We take a look at this tech delve.
    The batteries, assembled with care,
Strip easy, like butter, so beware,
    Sticky tape holds them tight,
    But disassembly's now in sight.
    For top balancing, cells separate,
    Bloating check, don't underestimate,
Some bulging, slight, but all intact,
A straight edge, though, reveals the fact.
Concave cells, it's hard to see,
But after a year, they seem to be,
    No oxidization, voltage check,
We write them down, what the heck!
Top balance, now, with power supply,
Bus bars from Halfords, my oh my,
Attach the leads, and set the stage,
    The desired voltage, we engage.
The amps drop, the hours fly,
    Battery charged, we say goodbye,
    Reassemble pack and BMS,
    Replace, upgrade, no more stress.
And so, our solar tale concludes,
    This eco-worthy tech eludes,
    With LifePO4 and solar power,
We're off-grid, for many an hour.

In order to not have a chance of runaway voltage, you should set the power supply voltage you want to "Top Balance" at before you hook the leads to the battery. Then increase the current after you connect the leads to the battery. This way you know what the maximum input voltage will be. Otherwise you have no idea what your max voltage is set at. (When the leads are connected, the voltage readout on the power supply will show the present battery voltage, not the supply's set voltage.) If you arent babysitting the charging for when the current drops, you can overcharge your cells and damage them.
At least that is my understanding. Seems everyone has an opinion...

A lot of these bench power supplies are annoying that way, but you can get a bench supply that allows you to actually set the current and voltage digitally whether on or off, as well as adjust it on the fly while the unit is connected to something... and have the numbers actually show up on the display properly.
An example would be something like a HANMATEK HM310 for a good bench switching supply, or a KORAD for a good bench linear supply. Those take all the guesswork out.

I'm a little confused by that 3.54V cell... a cell that has been sitting a couple of days should not be anywhere near 3.54V. Even without a BMS vampiring. You might need to blow off a little charge for a minute or two on all the cells to get a proper voltage reading. But still... 3.54V after a few days seems really high. Well, too late now 🙂

Hi Bill, I expect your a dab hand at opening the Eco's now. I've decide to keep the remaining one I have. I was wondering if you have any tips on how to open one, while keeping any casing damage minimal? I'd like to be able to reuse the case if I can. It's Den btw, changed my screen name a while ago. Looking forward to seeing how the upgraded bms works out, thanks for the video, interesting stuff!

    • @DCGUY

The lids are glued on, not very well I may add. Its a case of separating. You'll see where the lids sits on the battery case. Find something thin and flat e.g a paint scraper or knife. Tap under the lip to get a start, then continue to tap the blade with a hammer along the sides to break the glue bond. Hope that makes sense and the new bms is a bit of a challenge for fitment but I've 2 up and running and it's good to see the cells data etc.

@@DCGUY Yes makes perfect sense. I’ll give it a go at some point. Happy to hear you managed to fit the JBDs, amongst other things it’s great to have Bluetooth data on each battery. Of my 4 batteries only the Eco is without it. I may upgrade its bms too

Hi! nice video. I'm planing to install this battery in a Car. But I have not much space to fit it. Could you please tell me the dimensions without the case (minut 0:54)?

    • @DCGUY
      @DCGUY  2 місяці тому

You will find the cell dimensions here www.evlithium.com/hot-lithium-battery/ganfeng-gfb-100ah-lifepo4-battery-cell.html
But if your battery is more recent the cells used may differ. When you say for a car I'm assuming it's to run DC or an inverter? Placement is important when it comes to potential movement/ vibration or heat. Maybe a LiTime mini 12v 100ah would meet your space requirements better?

    • @josepsalord6601
      @josepsalord6601 2 місяці тому

@@DCGUY Yes, it's just as auxiliary battery (12v fridge, lights, usb, etc). I'm wondering if it is possible to install it modifying the plastic case or without it, as a way to fit it well. I don't know what a LiTime is... Thank you!
