I totally agree also!! Another good example is how our country including all Americans pulled together in the days that followed 9/11. You couldn't go down a residential street without seeing the American flag hanging everywhere. Unfortunately most dwell on our differences rather than all that we have in common. After 9/11 you could just feel it, the love and pride that we all felt for our country and our democracy. These days it is quite the opposite which is heartbreaking, also this makes us a weaker nation IMO. This concert was a gift to the Russian people from Gorbachev, a free all day concert that included five bands. I wonder how one would ever find their car after the show lol
I worked as a doorman for a friend's club in 1994 to 1996. The owner grew up with one of the band. It was the surprise of my life when Metallica performed in his 250 seat night club in Fairbanks, Alaska as a birthday gift for the club owner. Over a 3 year period when I worked there we had Quiet Riot, Blue Oyster Cult, Iron Maiden, Whitesnake, Motley Crew, Charlie Daniels, Confederate Railroad, and a dozen other big name bands of the era. He would sell tickets for 2 shows and the ticket prices were determined by taking the hotel, (which he owns), meals, and payment for the band and divide the cost by 250. The average ticket price was around $30 dollars. I have 2 signed guitars from shows there. One was signed by Bruce Dickinson, and the other one signed by the entire group Blue Oyster Cult.

Furthermore, not everyone has to Google lyrics. Some of us actually know them. He had the lyrics wrong. In this case, it was an important distinction.
I heard a formerly Soviet man say that before the Soviet Union fell that western music like this was forbidden. They very quietly listened to it via Voice of America in their teenage and similar bedrooms and made copies on old medical x-rays. If caught it would have gone very bad for them. So this pure joy in the audience was one of their first real tastes of freedom. I read that the bands did the concert for free. It was a singular amazing thing!
North Korean people are killed for listening to K Pop from the South K. It is still happening in socialist countries, and It simply amazes my old balls that some naive dumb kids without proper history education still falls for communism.

This concert happened before the Soviet Union collapsed , President Mikhail Gorbachev had been arrested. Boris Yeltsin was President of Russia he ensured officials would make it happen. He needed as much support as he could get as he was trying to stop the old guard taking over. Metallica were called in at short notice, they were on a European tour. A few months later the Soviet Union collapsed.
I wish I was just a few years older so I could have appreciate that time fully. But, I was just in my late teens. So many things I should have appreciated but didn't. Thank you for your explanation.
The Berlin Wall came down in 1989 this concert was in September 1991 the Soviet Union could have carried on, the old guard were trying to do that and arrested Gorbachev, President Boris Yeltsin stood in front of the Russian Whitehouse and personally convinced the tanks and troops to stay with him, about twenty people were killed but the troops agreed and gave loyalty to Yeltsin. If not the Soviet Union would have carried on. If you watch the full movie of this concert it shows ACDC on a tour of the area and they are shown where the troops halted their advance. ua-cam.com/video/3PJuIVIZ72k/v-deo.html @@joshua43214
When you go to amazing bands you can FEEL it in your chest and I'm not just talking about the drums and base! I had so much emotions swell up I had tears in my eyes while feeling electric! I've seen Ozzy, Killswtich Engaged, Job for a Cowboy, Marylyn Mansion, In This Moment, Devil Driver, Hatebreed, Cannibal Corpse, and Lamb of God to name a few... Rock on!
My first Metallica concert was 1990 and Justice for all tour. They're so loud back then that your ears would ring for a week. But it would make Me smile because I knew I just went and seen.the Baddest MotherFuckers on the planet. But I have only seen them 11 Times I need more 🤘🤘
I’ve been to over 14 Metallica concerts and every single one was amazing. The best was still the Damaged Justice tour in 1989, it was my second Metallica concert (First was when they opened for Ozzy in 1986, only time I saw Cliff live). The energy was just insane and the air was electric. I got to meet the band in 2009 on the Death Magnetic tour, which was a lifetime dream come true. James is the reason I learned how to play guitar as a teenager and finally, 20+ years later I got to meet him. Their music and playing guitar saved my life as a teenager. High School was a really bad time for me, as I was bullied mercilessly for being “fat” even though I really wasn’t that fat. It destroyed my self esteem and made HS a living hell for me. Being able to come home, throw on any Metallica album at the time, and play through it start to finish was my way of getting those emotions and frustrations out. Without that outlet, I doubt I make it out of my teenage years.
Let's take a moment to appreciate how virtually impossible it is in an outdoor venue to get that kind of sound quality and clarity. Hats off to their sound engineer and crew and the guy working the sound board
One of my favorite musical history moments. They stopped counting at 1.6 million so who really knows how many were there? The crowd with the helicopters and military guard around the stage is awesome!
And thinking from the history of the biggest live crowds this event is on 5 th or 6 position, Rod Stewart concert was the biggest with 4.2 million in Brazil on first spot then electronic musician Jean Michele Jare on 2-3 spots [one in France (Paris) and the other concert elsewhere] but as heavy rock-metal live event yeah this was the biggest festival live but Metallica was not the single band (like record holder Rod Stewart) because on same event with them was also AC/DC, Pantera & Black Crows and people were not just Russians were from other countries from Europe too.. but yeah.. hell of atmosphere and just imagine if one is right in the middle and needs to use the toilet.. what it will do ?!!!
@@иваниванов-ъ5ц8ь Если бы мы рассказывали сказки, то концерта уже не было, все певцы были иностранцами, а по случаю концерта приехали другие люди из Европы, которые приехали посмотреть концерт. To think that there were 1.6mil people is ludicrous. 1. nobody counted people 2. there were no tickets, and anybody could enter the airfield. if there were 400.000 people on this concert it would still be epic number, but people have to exaggerated everything like children.
The Berlin Wall came down in 1989. We witnessed it live on television. It was an amazing thing. My Dad had been part of the Berlin Air Lift at the end of WW2. He cried as he watched the wall come down. I was 18 & it was the 1st time I ever saw him shed a tear. This was the 1st taste of freedom for these people in Moscow/the former Soviet Union. Western music was illegal before the fall of the USSR. This is an amazing performance. Your reaction is quite fitting for this historical moment.
So I never went to concerts because I’m an introvert and hate crowds. However, I attended Louder Than Life in 2022 and it changed my life! Everyone, rich, poor, black, white, etc was rocking out to NIN, Kiss, Alice Cooper, Ministry, Evanescence, RHCP. It was humanity brought together by music. Since then I’ve seen Toto, Duran Duran, Bruno Mars, Blondie, The Killers, Depeche Mode, Bastille, Journey, etc. Every time I’m humbled by the way we collectively enjoy something as simple as music. ❤
I was 16 years old in 1991. I started to listen to Metallica, Ozzy and Megadeth. I grew up with the threat of the Soviets sending nuclear misslies against my country (Denmark). When the wall fell in Berlin and the Soviets wanted to become friends, it was the best feeling ever for me. I was a young teenager. But then it just went downhill again.. God dammit :( And this was done by moneypeople of the west and the east. So sad for the ordinary people.
The Soviets were a threat when I was a young girl. At school we used to have drills and get under our desks to protect ourselves from I'm guessing if we were ever bombed. I wish our world could come together and we could all love and help each other. Eliminate food & water shortages, poverty, having a home, etc...etc ...
I was 11, and remember watching the Berlin wall going down. I will never forget seeing my father almost shedding a tear of Joy when he explained how big this was. Miss those times of optimism
Exit light. Imagine being there, the energy of the band and the crowd feeding off of each other, soldiers rocking out, helicopters to cool the crowd, the national flags, a veritable sea of people around the stage - a once-in-a-lifetime experience.

Funny side story, and I'm going to be paraphrasing from memory, but some interviewer was giving Angus grief about their stuff sounding the same... stating something like, you've made 11 albums that people say all sound the same. Angus replied, rubbish! we've made 12 albums that all sound the same... :)
“Dreams of wars, dreams of liars, dreams of dragon fire and of the things that will bite.”…. This song is about nightmares! Metallica is badass! I absolutely love them!
я думаю это самое легендарное их выступление за всю историю рока в принципе :) думаю их еще долго ни кто не сможет обогнать по количеству людей одновременно на концерте :)
This song is about all the childhood fears when the lights go out. And sometimes we bring those fears with us into adulthood. The best song from this performance in Moscow is Creeping Death. Its one of the rare songs that is better in this live performance than the album version. Please , please do that one!! Rock on, Kelly
This song was originally written by James hetfield about infant crib death. But was told by producer bob rock at the time that the lyrics were to harsh and he switched the lyrics to what they are known now. Still as powerful
Bonamassa says he offers a two and a half hour escape from reality, describing his concerts. This is what max . Volume stadium rock and roll does. Turn it UP 🎉
Here's another band that you might like to give a listen, if interested. "Scorpions - Winds Of Change (Official Music Video)" --The Scorpions is a German hard rock band and was formed in Hanover, Germany in 1965. This song was written by lead singer Klaus Miene and produced by Keith Olsen and the band. Winds of Change is a rock ballad that celebrates the fall of the Soviet Union and the end of the Cold war. And the destruction of the Berlin Wall. The song became the unofficial anthem for the German Reunification of October 3, 1990. I enjoyed rocking with you two. Thanks for sharing.
It was actually the song that propelled them to fame, they were doing so terribly before that, that they actually considered packing it all in. The Winds of Change was their swan song. Then it exploded, then their back catalogue exploded because of it.
"The Sandman is a mythical character in European folklore who puts people to sleep and encourages and inspires beautiful dreams by sprinkling magical sand onto their eyes."
LOOOVED THIS!! So cool to see y'all appreciate an understand the magnitude of that show. And I love to see BP let loose, right on! Every show I've seen of Metallica has been phenomenal 🤟🤘🤟🤘🤟🤘🤟🤘🤟🤘🤟
No comparison. 1.6 people > 1.6 views! No youtuber could ever draw 1.6 million people in attendance anywhere. Nobody walking the face of the earth today could tbh. Think about it. You’d need The Second Coming of Jesus Christ dated and scheduled to come close.
Also...imagine BEING in 1.6 million people...outside in grass! Amazing and also "dude let's not sink into this mud somehow!" 😂 I've been to rock/country festivals with 10's of thousands but...wow..this is epic.
So the Sandman is popular in many cultures around the world. He is said to sprinkle sand over the eyes of children at night to help them get to sleep and dream. Initially the song was supposed to be about SIDS (Sudden Infant Death Syndrome) but as it was being written they changed it. Usually the sandman helps you go to sleep and have good dreams, but in the song, as you see if you watch their video, it's about nightmares. Their video for this is a must see, in my opinion.

100% agree. We need to figure out how to get us ALL back together. Our leaders all over the world are at fault for our divide! I am completely down with your reactions and love your open heart and mind.
When asked in an interview what it felt like walking onto that stage James Hetfield said it was like stepping out of a swimming pool and walking straight into a wall of electricity.
Here’s another treat from Metallica…. There’s an old Irish folk song called Whiskey In The Jar - the song dates back to the 17th century. Metallic released a metal/rock version of Whiskey In The Jar in 1999…. It’s really great!
The most people I have ever played for is around 300. I would get nervous / stage fright at first but after the fist few bars of musin it vanished. I would get goosebumps from the feedback of the audiance. 300 aint a big number unless you are a Spartan warrior lol. I cannot begin to imagine the power they must feel playing for over a million. That is insane!!
There were actually much fewer people. But it was the biggest gig before the Soviet Union fell. People were craving to see their idols. It was their FIRST time to see them live. It was a free gig. It was quite violent, wild, but full of energy and excitement!
Metallica was the 1st concert my oldest son went to. He was only 13 or 14 and I let him go with a friend and his big brother. He had a great time and returned home safely. He'll be 40 this summer 😊
In old folklore the sandman comes at night and sprinkles sand in your eyes to keep them shut and make you sleep and dream that's why he says "grain of sand"...."take my hand, off to never neverland".
The sound of freedom! I grew up listening to The Kinks, The Beatles, etc. That was my introduction to 'bad' music. And I loved it. I'm 71 and I still listen and love this song, Stevie Ray Vaughn, Santana, the list goes on and so many others. You should listen to Santana's Soul Sacrifice, at Woodstock. They took a hit of acid because they weren't supposed to go on for several hours. Less than an hour later they came and told them they are up because the band that was slotted to go on was running late. Funny story but true. You should read what Carlos said about it. :)
I only was able to see them once but I was blown away! I’m a headbanger from way back, graduated in ‘75, and I thank God I grew up in the era of the best music! Rock on sister! ❤️😃
I remember as a kid they played different bits and pieces from this concert on MTV and being 8-9 years old and staying up late on a Saturday night with some popcorn and a Pepsi to watch this was mind blowing to say the least.
really? i have the original moscow peace festival VHS (2 cassettes because it was so long) and they are not on there. or on the line up list. maybe it was another concert you are thinking about?
I wasn’t there, and I didn’t own the dvd but recalled friends talking about this concert and AC/DC was there… but I googled and maybe your video didn’t include AC/DC? I noticed on wiki that AC/DC’s set might have been included in their Live at Donington concert dvd? So maybe a licensing thing why your vhs didn’t have it?
This was the Monsters of Rock tour Metallica, AC/DC. Pantera and The Black Crows. Also, thanks for your beautiful message about humanity. We're all from the same planet, just trying to survive.
"Exit Light" (not "life") "Enter Night" "Take my hand" "We're off to Never-Never Land." it's about dealing with nightmares. The Sandman is a folklore faerie tale and brings us dreams - but just as likely to bring us nightmares.
Back in 1989 there was a history making festival that also took place in Moscow. It was The Moscow Music Peace Festival which played on Aug. 12 ans 13. It included bands like Skid Row, Cinderella, Scorpions, Ozzy Osborne Bon Jovi, Motley Crue and Gorky Park. Well worth checking out.
In the spring of 1991, Hetfield brought the band his lyrics for "Enter Sandman" and, of all topics, it was about crib death - "y'know, baby suddenly dies, the sandman killed it," the Metallica frontman described it in 2007 - and it's destructive effect on the family unit.
The actual music video To enter sandman, that's what you gotta watch it's like a mac truck! It will give you a very different vibe than this live crowd.
That was the biggest concert ever in the World. I watched AC/D/D and Rolling Stones plus 10 to 15 bands back in Canada in 2002 Sars in Toronto and I thought it was big
It was indeed a historical moment. As you are discovering heavy metal I would suggest a very unique band Living Color " Cult of Personality" great lyrics.
Here's the thing no one talks about, Russian police had to deal with thousands upon thousands of reports of R. that were committed against young women by young Russian men during the show. Some absolutely brutal fights broke out as the band played. When Hatfield was asked about what went on, he responded that everyone who attended temporarily lost their minds. That they simply weren't used to THAT level of Freedom, and didn't know how to deal with it. Financially it was a huge success for the band.... In every other way, it was a disaster!
And in ten more years it will be millions upon millions were raped and then years later it will be shown that it wasn't that big a deal but you guys are just gonna keep making the fish story bigger and the fish keeps getting bigger and the fish keeps getting bigger
When this song by Disturbed came out, my daughter played it for us. We were singing it word for word. She said this just came out, how do you know it. She was shocked to hear that this is the Simon and Garfunkel song. She walked around dazed for days😂
The fact that I've lived through most of ... any bright, beautiful eras :_) and I'm making my kids live them too! They know this video and many others hahaha MJ, Iron Maiden, Metallica, Aerosmith... throw it to them!!!
This song can help you overcome your own fears and anxieties... There is so much here to explore, it's inspired me in many ways....opened new doors to understanding my own mind!
1.6 million people, no fights, no deaths, very few injuries yet Travis Scott does a 50,000 concert and 10 people die and there are over 300 injured. Hmmm
I think this video brought me the most joy of all the others, i was smiling and Laughing the whole time, i even teared up just seeing yall rock out together and the joy on your faces...music could heal world in my opinion.
Gave me Goosebumps as well; you are right; MUSIC UNITES us. And, looking at 1.6 Million people together, SHOWS how strong WE are; the people. The past 3 years has shown us MANY times where should have exercised that strength…
Whilst this is one of my favourites, it is only #6 on the list of biggest attended. #1 is Rod Stewart on New Years Eve 1994, in Rio and had 4.2 million.
I’ve watched this three times. I’m so stoked to watch the evolution of people that really don’t like her or her music and then actually watching her perform and slowly come to love it, and holy crap has this been a fun evolution with you!! I’ve seen it all, and bless you Jamie for turning him on to this shit. This whole Eras Tour is INCREDIBLE, and as someone who went and had the best time of my life, you can’t even BELIEVE how insane it was. She literally performed for 3 1/2 hours straight, with just a couple quick changes and she kept up *this energy* THE ENTIRE TIME!!! You would be so fucking impressed, and if you get the chance to see it live, DO IT!!!! 😂❤
This a free concert called the Monsters of Rock Festival which included bands such as AC/DC, The Black Crowes, Pantera, & E.S.T. The show was on September 28, 1991 & the Soviet Union had not collapsed, per say, yet. The Soviet Union flag came down on December 25, 1991. I'd say comprehending the dynamics of the Soviet Union & Western music should also be absorbed into the context of this event. During the Soviet Union government's rule of authority, Western music was band. To get Western music, it predominantly had to be bootlegged into Russia & its republics. Western musicians were prohibited from playing in the Soviet Union. Elton John was one of the few major artists to play live in the Soviet Union in 1979. With the Perestroika reforms initiating in the mid-1980s, the Soviet Union began to open a bit towards Western musicians playing live shows. Billy Joel was the biggest artist to play in the Soviet Union in 1987 since Elton John in 1979. The following artists also played in Russia in 1987: The Doobie Brothers, Carlos Santana, James Taylor & Bonnie Raitt. The Scorpions played in the Soviet Union in 1988 & then in 1989, the Moscow Music Peace Festival had the following bands: Bon Jovi, Mötley Crüe, Ozzy Osbourne, Cinderella, Skid Row, Gorky Park & the Scorpions once again perform live in Russia. Pink Floyd aslo played five shows in Moscow in 1989. You didn't have a free market of Western bands touring Russia & its republics during the Soviet Union era. And despite acts such as Billy Joel starting to play live shows in 1987 until the Monsters of Rock Festival in 1991, this was a rare & limited (Western music) commodity. And when Metallica was playing live in Moscow at this show, Russia was still a communist country & controlled by the Kremlin as the Soviet Union.
4 am in Washington and I’m listening to Enter Sandman 😂 Edit: Yes. The energy! I love humans! The power of music! Love from the Uni (one) Verse (song). We are all connected ❤ 🌎 ✌️
I went to work and live in Moscow in 1993, I stayed for 13 yrs, and this concert was legend, every market was selling All the heavy metal bands memorobilia. My to be wife was at this concert, it was free which is why so many people, normally the government would have restricted the numbers, but it was at the time of HUGE change in Russia, the 90's in Moscow reminded me of the 60's in London, that new freedom and taking it to full advantage. Now they are back in the 80's Shame !

Do you have a cowbell signed by Bruce?
Wow!! That's a super cool experience!! That must have been really cool to hang with all those guys just talkin about life over a beer.

It was a singular amazing thing!
same thing is happening in north korea right now - people go to jail for playing western music. absolute madness.
Music from the Soviet Union was also banned in the United States for propaganda reasons. So both worlds are stuck in a song between 2 blocks.
It was illegal to own a typewriter under Soviet slavery. Communism will always be evil.

Well summed up. Sadly they got a lot wrong re the time frames in the video. I've seen the whole concert and researched the whole background. Cheers.
I wish I was just a few years older so I could have appreciate that time fully. But, I was just in my late teens. So many things I should have appreciated but didn't. Thank you for your explanation.
One could argue that the USSR collapsed when the Berlin Wall came down, the rest was just death throws.

Metallica live is a singular experience. That level of hype is what rock music can do to you.
But I have only seen them 11 Times I need more 🤘🤘
Just took in the double Detroit concerts and they still got it.
There really is no comparison to being there when a band plays live, sure you have their album, but but no it is not the same.

Here’s another treat from Metallica…. There’s an old Irish folk song called Whiskey In The Jar - the song dates back to the 17th century.
Metallic released a metal/rock version of Whiskey In The Jar in 1999…. It’s really great!
Nazareth did "Whiskey in the Jar" in the 70s, but I don't think it was actually released in the States. If you haven't heard it, check it out.

it's about dealing with nightmares. The Sandman is a folklore faerie tale and brings us dreams - but just as likely to bring us nightmares.

So true! Great comment!
In the spring of 1991, Hetfield brought the band his lyrics for "Enter Sandman" and, of all topics, it was about crib death - "y'know, baby suddenly dies, the sandman killed it," the Metallica frontman described it in 2007 - and it's destructive effect on the family unit.

The concert was not a financial success as it was free .

Been very proud
Also very homesick. They should’ve had a good chef on tour
1.6 million people, no fights, no deaths, very few injuries yet Travis Scott does a 50,000 concert and 10 people die and there are over 300 injured. Hmmm
Definitely a different mindset for sure😢
Exactly
I think that was a ritual
Wow
6 people did die at this concert.... but when you think of the chaos and massive numbers of people in attendance.... that's a low number
Yeah, they were one of the most popular bands in the USSR in the 80s and the 90s. Everyone knew them there.
I think this video brought me the most joy of all the others, i was smiling and Laughing the whole time, i even teared up just seeing yall rock out together and the joy on your faces...music could heal world in my opinion.
In 1991, the Soviets really needed this. Gathering for a performance like this was a breath of fresh air.
Check out The Thing That Should Not Be from 1989 Seattle! ....or anything else from that show. Crème de la crème!
OMG.. in 1991 I was 24 and I'm 57 now.. I've never seen this.. I'm blown away.. First time ever even hearing of this concert.. dang
Do you maths i was 21 in 91 am now 54
I love russians and i'm puerto rican which makes me american
With how torn apart the world is now, this is definitely an inspiration for hope
They were like kids who were locked in a closet for a long time. Then let out and given a brand new toy. ❤️
That’s what celebrating FREEDOM looks like!!!!!
I remember watching this on MTV when this happened in 1991! My senior year in high school. I was a metal head and this was absolute history!!!
Gave me Goosebumps as well; you are right; MUSIC UNITES us. And, looking at 1.6 Million people together, SHOWS how strong WE are; the people. The past 3 years has shown us MANY times where should have exercised that strength…
No one has ever beaten Metallica in their 1.65 million in attendance. Not even the Beatles.
And when Metallica was playing live in Moscow at this show, Russia was still a communist country & controlled by the Kremlin as the Soviet Union.
... you meant, this is what a good music does to people, not the shitty one that we hear so often everywhere
Imagine this being your first taste of real freedom. ❤❤❤
