when I was younger, I understood the intention of the scene right away, Tidus is creating a forced laugh, he knows it. and he knows it sounds stupid. and he was told, stop" and kept going because he then found it really funny to gauge a response. Then Yuna joins in as everyone cringes. and then they laughed genially after it. It's strange how people can call that laugh poor acting, then somehow ignore the well executed laugh that happend straight after? It was one of the most humanizing scenes all game. and it set up the whole concept of the future whistle Yuna does. It was probably the most important scene all game.

Honestly, I think it's less about "misunderstanding" the game but more about being malicious and taking scenes out of context because they don't like the game. I played this as a kid and I'm not even an English speaker and even I know what it meant. It was so weird seeing so many memes making fun of this scene but I just assumed those people were doing those videos in bad faith. Gotta produce content!

Break all your electronics shit if you think so.

Even as somebody who didn't like FFX, I understood it instantly: it's a sarcastic, almost malicious, deliberately bad effort laugh because laughing is the absolute last thing he feels like doing at this moment in time but somebody's trying to make him. The bit where Yuna, understanding where he's coming from, joins in out of solidarity is _awesome._
The fact most of the game's own fans didn't get this speaks to the average intelligence of somebody who likes FFX (I jest, but all the same it needs a remake bad because the cutscenes, which cannot be skipped, are so poorly executed.) At least those who only have it out of context have said lack of context as an excuse.
I am utterly stunned that so few people got it. It seemed obvious to me.

Yeah, I feel like the persistent reaction to this scene is largely due to the fact that this game was largely initially played by pre-teens who both couldn't comprehend the emotional nuance leading up to it, coupled with the the fact that English dubs of Japanese properties at the time were notorious for being of poor quality, so people latched on to the idea that any "weird" take in an English dub was just due to bad acting. Almost nobody bothered to listen to the original Japanese dub to see that it played out the EXACT SAME WAY.

    • @Vulgarth1
      @Vulgarth1 Рік тому

This is absolutely the case. When this game came out, we were watching stuff like the 4Kids YuGiOh dub, Digimon, Pokémon. Bleach and Detective Conan also had pretty bad dubs at the time. A few years after FFX came out, Naruto began showing up on Cartoon Network and boy, that really did not have a good dub at the time. Guys and gals older than me probably remember stuff like the infamous Megaman X4 cutscene of Zero narming at the sky. "What am I fighting foooooaoaaaaarrrrrrrgh."
Hell, it wasn't even really just down to import or localised games. Y'gotta remember that the best we had in the West 'til' then was Metal Gear Solid and Legacy of Kain. Most everything else was taking the cartoon approach to voice acting. It was either Biker Mice From Mars or Shakespearean theatre and basically no in-between.

It's the opposite of bad acting... there are so many nuances within his acting in this scene (and the whole game) that make up for some of the best voice acting I've ever heard. To name just a couple: before he starts the fake laugh, he takes a deep breath in, sighs, and then takes another deep breath in before beginning the fake laugh. You can hear a bit of skepticism and defeat in that sigh, as if he's almost saying "this is crazy....well, here goes nothing, I guess". Another nuance is the last "HA" on the last "row" of fake laugh right before Yuna joins in; you can hear in that last "HA" a sense of relief. Almost like if you screamed or vent out to someone about something big in your life, which starts giving you that release and making you feel better-- you almost do a bit of an "AAAAH" in relief of letting it all out.
All that subtext from just "HA HA HA HA HA". It's crazy.

My personal take: Yuna was trying to be Tidus' "Shining light" or "Ray of light," (per se) in his dark times, when he's down deep in thought, or has nothing else to do when he's "powerless." after what tidus has gone through during their journey in FFX. Yuna acknowledges that Tidus' troubled times are indeed a struggle, but tries to force Tidus to just LET IT ALL OUT. Let al that negativity out and bring in that positivity in. Which is why Yuna said she wanted her life to be full of laughter. Which is healthy. No one wants to carry a burden for the rest of the lives, right? WE'RE HUMANS, DAMNIT. (That's what I personally took from this laughing scene by comparing my own life! Feel free to point out any errors!) I'd be utterly glad to have someone force me to do the laughing scene too, haha! :D Tbh, FFX was my one and only favorite FF game, and I'm just starting a new save file on my PS4! I've beaten Seymour Natus and now heading to Mt. Gagazet!

@@AndysTake Yeah Critizim is certainly welcomed and I my self write quite a few reviews on games so i know full well how to actively analyize a paticular game. How ever most memes these days are created for the sole purpose of throwing nagative hate towards something where people either don't understand or even worse, they do it just for the sheer attention of intentionally sabotaging a popular product or over rated title. That isn't fair critiszm, that is taking a piece of art and tearing it apart just because people can. The worst part about it is some of these memes explode in popularity and other people that review the product, don't even realize their notion against the game is missconveyed because of the negative conation of the meme. Back in the era before social media, this was never really an issue i think because gamers could take something of negativity and exploit it or popularize in such a way that the whole world knows.

Effortless shit for cheap laugh with no purpose served to all of it!" and it just destroyed beloved characters that was once cool. Sonic shouldn't act cool, because he IS cool. He is a rebel who get shit done for what's right no matter what, he cracks jokes but when it get's serious he step up to the plate, he's cocky but he don't underestimate his opponents and abilities. This video deserves way more views. I remember hearing a bunch of memes of a "badly voice acted laugh" for years. When I first played FFX, which was about a year or two ago now (still one of my top favorite games ever), I had no idea the laugh was in this game at all. I had seen the laugh with absolutely zero context before, both in gif form and in short videos, completely cutting out the conversation before and after. Just the "HA HA HA HA HA HA HA HA" part and that's it.
So I was shocked to see the laugh in this scene when it came up. But at the same time, I knew immediately what the scene was trying to tell me. Now, could the model's face animations be done a little better to make it more obvious? Of course, it's an old game after all. But through the voice acting and the writing of the scene, and the previous one, I understood what was happening and I loved the laugh because of how cute it was. I found it even more adoreable when Yuna tries mimicking him! Then they start laughing for real, and you can just tell that it was Tidus just being Tidus in a very hard situation. I loved this scene from the moment I saw it, and I wish people didn't always lump it completely out of context with the rest of the scene. People do the same thing with Kingdom Hearts, and other FF games sometimes too. It's really dumb.

This did not require a video. Definitely didn't need to show the laugh 4 times. He's 3 things to REALLY get out of it.
1 (most important): Yuna is basically getting Tidus to "lie". This reflects the sad lie that Yuna (and the rest of the guardians) have been telling Tidus all along: Yuna is going to die.
    2. Tidus again says "What are you looking at Wakka?" in the good ending of X2.
    3. Tidus briefly does a fake sad smile, which can be seen on Yuna in the regular ending of X2 while she's riding in the sky.

Tidus is depressed because his dad is a whale. Yuna, who understands depression due to her ongoing self-sacrificial campaign, tries to teach Tidus her coping mechanism. Tidus, a person that wears his emotions on his sleeves, does not take well to these practices and instead grossly exaggerates the fake emotions he's meant to be portraying. Yuna is initially shocked, but eventually decides to join in in cutting loose and actually getting to vent some of her stress as well. They both then laugh at the absurdity of what they're doing.

This scene really got an unfair treatment, and it's really sad because we all know the gaming industry won't be able to replicate the quality of a scene like this in the future, and people won't be able to comprehend it anyway because of a lack of subtlety and empathy.
FFX was probably the last FF game that would respect the player enough to have nuanced and human content like this, and not that kind of anime-style writing for braindeads that needs everything to be explained for them as it happens on the screen.

Bad voice acting??? Actually I beg to differ...It is excellent voice acting. Why? Just listen to the incredulous tone of disbelief when Tidus said "what?" when he was asked to just laugh it out. It is the silent non-verbalised cues that the audience has to keep in mind that if they were in this situation, they would think it is crazy to do that (since it might their first time). Then, Tidus takes a deep breath and notice how forceful and stuttering (mechanical even) his initial few seconds of his laugh. Then, it became a little long and montonous but by then second try it become louder and more you can feel he really got into the forced laughter. No one at the sides were stopping him though, which I think it might be a Japanese thing or a polite thing to do (being courteous or they knew that laughing is also a way of healing and letting go of that pressure inside). To me, I think it was at that point in time, Tidus begins to realise it helped (that's why it was louder, forceful), he knew it was working/good for him if that make sense? Afterwards, of course, they realised it was all too funny too that his laugh ended up like that..So you get the voice actors actually laughing at the silliness of it all (you can hear it afterwards). Many people have also felt that it was quite a slow scene too and awkward, because it is!! It is! There's a lot of hesitation and tension between the two.
By the way, I never had this feeling when I was a kid playing this game. It was when I played it again when I was much older, then all these hit me like a truck.

I get it, tidus was trying to get Yuna to "let go" , don't take everything so seriously. To Laugh even when things appear bad.

Final fantasy x is a fantastic game Imo the story, character, visuals, gameplay, music, content and way of its time. This games scene and story was misunderstood and people finding ways to nit pock it to death and hate on it. The voice acting is a little awarkard but not as bad people say and at times it can be good. The mini games are a mixed some I don't mind but others are not good. But everything else makes up for it and the good outweighs the bad.

I just think it's the meme effect. Most people who criticizes this scene haven't played the game. Even if they did, they either bought the game because of the meme. Or just weren't paying attention. Final Fantasy has long cutscenes & people tend to stopped paying attention anyway. To me, the scene was funny & cute. But I just hate Tidus. He's way too whiny for me. I also hate how he kept saying "This is my story". Like, what an inconsiderate ass. His friends were literally around him. This is your story? Screw you!

I'm not even a native speaker and I understood this scene right away when I played this game many years ago, really sad this scene and game is STILL the punching bag of "bad acting"

Honestly this is pretentious. Idk how people can say "so few understand this scene!" - it's all pretty explicit and we get it, but It just sounds silly. It's bad even with understanding the context, lol.
When you force/fake laugh, it's still supposed to sound like a laugh lol idk what the hell that was that came from the VA's mouth.

The problem with the scene is the soft, tender, emotional music in the background, as he laughs. It sets it up more as a bad-things-just-happened-and-now-I'm-cathartically-letting-it-out scene, as opposed to Tidus just being goofy with Yuna.

@@AndysTake Because Yuna knows that she is going to die. Tidus does not. Yuna's tragedy is immesurable, yet she finds the strenght to cheer up Tidus, even through her whole journey is leading up to her death. It's bittersweet at best, but you only get it in hindsight. This might be the most heart breaking scene in the game, but only on your second playthrough.

@@AndysTake yes its actually a sad scene. because they trying to laugh and smile in front of people (they're ray of light that people put their hope) despite their journey and fate is going to be tragic. I wouldn't even said that was a fake laugh, its more like screaming for help
