Hello. Few things hopefully helpful; 1. That whine from the front is the electrohydraulic power steering pump. 2. On many cars going between 2 panels going from front to back the front one is slightly over flush to prevent whistling and buffeting as air flows over it at speed. (Probs not your case though as that's quite bad) 3. The door window won't go up on its own when lockin if previously open in case you want to leave a dog or a child inside or disconnect the battery. Same in any car really. 4. You can clean your alcantara with a brush a suitable product & wipe off first with a wet then a dry towel. What seems like wear is just dirt and oils from your hand clogging and compacting the fibers. It's very hard wearing actually. You'll clean it and it will be like new (for a short while, not a great option for a daily 🙃) Enjoy!
All great points! Very true about the alcantara. Most people have no clue about detaling. I once saw a video where the son of a 100M+ guy in California had been told by his father to wash his Hyuara with dish soap in direct sunlight. Point is that, just because you have an expensive car it dosen't mean you know how to take care of it.
The whine is definitely the accumulators, so you called it correctly in your vid (although you called them actuators). They fail on almost all 720s, seals leak, hydraulic pressure reduces, which leads to a harsher ride, stiffer steering and eventually issues with the rear wing not functioning correctly. Mclaren saying it's "normal" is BS, they don't make any noise when they are in good shape. Also be aware that Mclaren removed accumulator replacement from their extended warranty a couple of years back and it's a 5-6k job to have them replaced :( I had to do this on my 675LT and they refused the warranty claim, stating accumulators are no longer considered a mechanical component. Good old Mclaren, love em...hate em!!! Enjoyed the content...
Thanks for the info, especially on the warranty, you can still hear the accumulators over the exhaust now, and the exhaust is ridiculously loud! 😂 Also, the windscreen has cracked (another common known issue), but that isn't covered under the warranty either (£4k to replace) 😂
@@EVILGT Sheesh, sorry mate, yes windscreens are def another issue on the Spiders. Also get some Sonax Alcantara foam cleaner for the steering wheel, it's magic and with a little patience you'll get it looking brand new. A lot cheaper than 3k for a new wheel!!! ;)
I can't tell the McLarens apart. However, the more you walk round the car the more curves you see and realise its a really good looking car despite some of the panel gaps being a bit " TVR ". As you say though Lee, you forgive it all the quirks as soon as you drive it
Engines are shyte too. Many corners cut....like despicable stuff. Theres compnaoes make a fortune tearing mclaren blocks apart and rebuilding them so they just work.
In my experience, it seems some cars are so much better put together than others (and I believe it's more a case of who was on shift at the time rather than the year the car was built 😂). My 720 has been faultless and there's nothing out there for the price that can give me that bonkers performance! 🤪
Would love to see you both start a Warrington Wheeler Dealers. Put a ramp in Lee's Garage and do all the work yourselves. Buy something that needs loads of work like a BMW M3. Lee on mechanical and Ben on bodywork. Learn us all how to fix cars
Body panel gaps are inherent traits from a very rigid carbon tub chassis car with super light weight parts. Mine were adjusted in a few minutes by the dealer. High pitch is from the suspension pump. It’s getting all the fluids ready to circulate through the accumulators and steering box. Maybe try a 488, it’s quieter and more “plush” This is what you get when you buy a super light weight super car with best performance in its class.
If you want a mini supercar experience but for less money then consider an Alfa 4C, it turns heads as much as these supercars for a fraction of the cost, around £50k now but worth it. They sound nice too, and I'm getting 42 mpg on longer journeys, easy to maintain, services aren't too expensive and they are pretty rare. I do like Mclarens though, just can't stretch to it yet.
These problems are common on 720s'. The earlier mclarens are built with a lot more attention to detail. All of the parts you point out are normally aligned as part of the factory compliance checks when the car certificate is issued. You will never see a 12c, 650s, 675lt with these problems.
Steering wheel is a easy clean and I bought a pack of disposable covers to keep it clean and wash my hands if I have too move the car out for a wash. Good banter guys!
I'll tell you another thing I hate about that McLaren 720S, the fact I can't afford one. I see this car as something you would only buy if you really loved it. I love it personally, but if I was buying something this expensive with my sensible head on, and not my emotional head, I would simply have to buy a 911 Turbo S. The usability, reliability, practicality, just stands above anything else in it's price range. But you don't buy cars like this with a sensible head on do you :-))
A neighbour of mine had one. He drove it 3 or 4 times before it got collected by McLaren on a truck and I never saw it again. Reliability would be my concern.
Great video lads👍I think when you’ve got a super car like that, I think you have to live with a few imperfections! But I’m sure the performance makes up for it 👍

I have a 600lt spider with not a single panel gap issue they all line up perfectly. It does however rattle and squeak , the mirror shakes like mad . But that all goes away when your on the open road great cars indeed
Are the rattles and squeaks from the top mechanism? Because Mclaren Carbon Tub construction is super rigid, most cars that have creaks and rattles (particularly open topped cars) is primarily because of body flex
When it comes to panel gaps you can get them adjusted so they align properly. Just don't go to Mclaren because they'll take a month and charge you a small fortune for something they should have done right in the first place.
I've seen two 720s parked next to each other one with bad door panel gaps and the other they were horrendous , literally 3/4 inch on top 1/4 inch on the bottom... They make old Teslas look like Swiss watches
