Yes!! We want to see the 2 person MRE. Not sure why no one else is saying it. As far as finding places, you're going to run out unless you travel. I would like to see a "grey man" episode where you have to find a place to cook/eat that isnt going to draw attwntion. Maybe do a lost hiker idea. Put the MRE to the test in the field. Shouldn't be long for 15k. Also, i didn't figure you for someone who would drink the Kool-Aid......
The two person one is coming. Hopefully soon depending on subs! I am considering a video much like you described. That should be fun. And that’s not “the” Koolaid. 😂
Congratulations on the channel growth. Your MRE content is both unique and thought provoking. I believe you now possess the skill and experience to face the Homemade MRE challenge of all Homemade MRE challenges. You must confront the beaver. Yes Dad you are called to Buckees. May God have mercy on your stomach. Good news, they have a LOT of toilets
I’ve heard that there are powdered milk sachet packs out there but haven’t seen them yet. That would help. I think mostly I need to cut back the water in the mix.
My grandma used to serve leftover chili over rice or mashed potatoes. If there was a large group, she would add elbow macaroni to help stretch the batch. I was thinking powdered milk or creamer for the instant breakfast drink. I love the smell of blueberries, but not the taste😂
Brilliant to include the Carnation packet. Cheap, ultra lightweight. Nice cold or hot. I think the Carnation is 8 ounces prepared. Looks like you doubled it. But if still palatable at double, then that is just added hydration!! Good if water source is tasting a little off. The milk definitely adds protein, but it still has 5 grams on its own. Still loaded with vitamins. Think I will start adding this into my preps. Thanks!! Rice and chili or pasta (elbows!) and chili. Never ever considered it until a few years ago when I just wanted more texture, especially if it is all I am eating. Then once I paired the two together, it became a norm for me. I make up it up on the side so anyone else can decide if they want it or not. If not that stuff then usually smashed up saltine crackers and/or corn bread. Maybe it is too out there but what about a convenience store MRE. Ok, so no one is going to make that their first choice to put together a meal, but more than once in my life I have put together a "meal" from a small, overpriced, limited selection gas station. Whether from lack of a work lunch, impromptu camp out, or wanting to top off my car emergency supplies (some storms having kept people stranded on highway for a night-- and one time I absolutely did stop at a convenience store and create an MRE of the sort to get me through just in case. Forgot about that until now). Thinking if depending on what they have/dont have, then letting nutrition and texture, overall belly filling satisfaction be the guide. I love the rules, and I like the creativity of coming up with something out of what is available at a specific location, or creating something out of nothing. Great to see your subscriber numbers creeping up!
Thank you! I’m looking into doing a truck stop MRE soon if I can find what I need. I might have to do some creative thinking with that one but then that’s half the fun. Funny you mention being stranded in your car because that is one of the most likely scenarios for needing a stick of food and supplies. I don’t want to have to live a couple days in my car on Taco Bell sauce packs and half a bottle of water my kid left under the seat last year.
It's nice to see your channel growing. 😃 I'd love to see your video at 15,000! As a child of the sixties/seventies your Kool Aid love is awesome. I grew up drinking this stuff.
This is some of my favorite YT content! Keep up the great work! P.S. I would love to see you collaborate with “Camping with Steve”……it would be the ultimate mix of stealth camping fueled by homemade MRE adventures!
@@dadbudgetadventures Yeah I definitely think it would be an awesome and entertaining collaboration if it were to come to fruition! Regardless, what the future holds…..I thoroughly enjoy your content! 🙌🏼
Great video and a lot better cooking option. I use the sterno stove quite often. I appreciate that it’s inexpensive and fits into a day pack for a day long hunting trip. Because I always pack extra food just in case. Thank you
I have a fold-flat stainless steel stove that will take alcohol, esbit fuel tablets, wood pellets, or even just small pieces of wood in a pinch. For more money you can get a lighter weight titanium stove with the same sort of design. Even the stainless steel one only weighs a couple of ounces but the titanium one is less than an ounce. That's what I carry in my day pack.
I dont see a problem with repeating places or going to similar places again, so long as you avoid duplicates. Also same place but avoiding the obvious choices you got elsewhere, so finding new items to show.
I think it would be really fun to make an "MVP MRE Challenge"! Maybe even a 24 hr version to get more items in it? Rules: 1) Normal Rules Apply 2) Each item must be the "best of" for its class. 3) All items must conform to a single criteria Ex - "Best Price Challenge", "Best Taste Challenge", "Easiest to Eat", "Best Nutrition Profile".... ect
Hello, I have a suggestion for you, in a form of a question. That Carnation instant breakfast drink that you mixed with water and said that it wasn't that creamy. What about adding a couple of those individual packets of powdered coffee creamers to it to make it creamier.
You can get it in quart packets. If you do a 24 hour MRE could use it in 2 meals. Hardly anyone only drinks an 8 ounce drink. My thermos holds 24 ounces
I've put a scoop of my high protein meal shake mix in coffee. I use Orgain. Either the chocolate or vanilla work pretty well, but I prefer them shaken with either cows milk or soy milk. Soy adds lots of protein.
Name suggestion: T.O.N. MRE’s…This Or Nothing 😁 Store suggestion: There are 27 Piggly Wiggly stores in Tennessee. I’m not sure if you are near any of them. I drive 20 minutes to get to one (the one in my town closed and I missed shopping there) because it has very unique (not fancy) local products. This is generally a low end/budget friendly, local items, type grocery store. *You might want to include appropriate sized binder clips in your MRE’s that have the 2 serving size drink powder and/or any other foil packet type item that might be opened and then saved for later. Can you amend the rules (I have) to allow individual sized (take out) condiments that were purchased or “obtained” in bulk?
I bought a bag with a large selection of 30+ different flavors/types/brands (60 packets in all) of sauces (mostly hot sauces, but chili sauce, hoisin, more) from Amazon for $20... Mostly to try before I commit to a full bottle of that flavor or a big box of packets for other storage/prep.
I think there might be a Pig within reasonable distance so I will look for that. Adding condiments isn’t necessarily against the rules, I just try to only include things I get at that same spot just for the videos. For a regular MRE I would add them.
With dollar tree becoming $1.25 Tree, many of the "deals" aren't any more. Some are... But I was shocked at how many I could beat in Walmart or other stores.
Always enjoy the videos, this one did not disappoint! Yes, definitely want to see the 2 person MRE so best of luck adding to your subscribers. Finally, back in the day, Kool-Aid, a bologna sandwich, some Fritos, and Twinkies for lunch and you were good to go for an afternoon on your bike, in the creek, or a ball game. Kool-Aid fueled a whole generation of us!
If you need an idea. A non hiking meal might be a C-rations. This was a military staple for years and there is more variety of products available with a longer shelf life.
Great video DBV, I really enjoyed it. My wife and I were Full Time RVers for just over 2 1/2 years. I really miss camping and hope to be able to get back to it someday. Have a great week. JT
I was watching one of my favorite camping video's from Ontario Canada "TheWildYam" She went for a hike up a mountain and at the top made lunch. Mountainhouse freeze dried beef stew. She had one serving in a ziplock bag (container $48 serves 8). She heated it with a bit of water and thought it was very good in flavor.
The stove and Fuel is in the price range of most of your viewers. Dollar tree carries the fuel. Walmart has the folding stove. The Expensive cooking items are not practical with r budgets. Great job today
I have a small "stove" that packs up into a small box. You can use twigs and paper, etc, to start it. You can use fuel as well, but it's a great little "stove"
With chili we eat it so many different ways...plain topped with onions, cheese, & sour cream - over rice especially if it is more beany than meaty - or a chili mac. Would like to see how you make a multi-person kit. It shouldn't be too long before you reach 15k.
I think if i took the carnation packs on the road and used water, i would probably use a smaller amount of water if thats all i had to mix it with, that way im still getting the nutrients from it, but, if its not as palatable, i can get it down quickly. But, in a shtf scenerio, im sure that would taste amazing even without the milk and just water. My family loves them for a quick breakfast drink before work or school. I really like this mre pouch. I still have to make a few for our camping trip coming up. My son said he wants us to be in the woods and thats it. Live off what we bring and thats it. No going close to civilization or anything. Almost like a bug out pre run lol. Im excited for it. I have lots of freeze dried meals that ive stored, so, i may pack those plus some ideas that you've given me, however, i wanna make sure i bring comfort stuff as well. I cant wait to do it. We're planning on a whole week out, alone in the woods with just what we bring. 😊
Great video today. My wife always gets me that same Minute Rice for my lunches for work. I always take the Dinty Moore Beef Stew and rice at least once a week. I also add one or two of those rice cups to homade Chicken Soup. Uncle Ben's rice in a pouch would be a great choice in a 24 hour ration. Speaking of items from a new place. If you have a Bucees in your area do a 24 hour ration from there. I live in Northern Ohio we don't have a Bucees here unfortunately. We are getting one in Southern Ohio sometime this year. Film the MRE for two so we can see it when you hit 15k subscriber's.
Another good vid DBA. Let's get you to 15k. I'm okay with most of the Hormel compleats, but not the family, and not in our prepper pantry anymore. The chili, and spaghetti are the most palatable to me.
Why does a single meal have to provide 15k calories? That's more than what I eat in a day. These aren't battle rations. They are meals for when the power is out or you're camping. I suppose you could double the portions or just take 2 pouches if you really want that many calories.
@@lskazalskiThe 15k was the number of subscribers DBA was hoping to get. Sorry if came out confusing. For a larger adult roughly 2200 kca per day 1800-2000 kcal/day for a smaller adult. Military MRE's designed for that amt. of calories.
@jbeachbob58 That makes more sense. I'm glad to see his channel building, too. I understand military MREs. Again, this is one meal, not a full day, and it's not designed for the kind of exertion a military MRE is.
Awesome video! While in the military on many occasions I've eaten C rations, K Rations and two generations of MREs. I really enjoyed the C ration. Now I don't know if it was the fog of time or they were really better but occasionally I crave the spaghetti and peach cobbler from the C ration. MREs caused me some intestinal distress after a few days of it. I enjoy beans and rice so chili and rice is good for me. I have 3 or 4 little stoves I've found at garage sales and thrift shops... Not instantly available but the deals are out there. Thank you for the video I appreciate you doing that you're doing.
If I tried the same thing in Australia, I'd fail hard. It astounds me the range of items you can buy in the US and the lower prices than Australia. A lot of stuff, our chocolate bars for example don't have anywhere near the shelf life of the US varieties. Most of our stuff is like 3-9 months of shelf life. I'm not sure if it's a food safety standards difference, difference of ingredients or preparation method but canned goods are about the only thing I've seen over here that definitely have that sort of shelf life. Another great video, always happy to see a new one.
@@dadbudgetadventures yes and no. It doesn't help for long term food storage of ready to eat food however. We can buy a lot of the camping dehydrated meals and long term storage ones at camping and outdoor stores but as far as making one's own, nowhere near the range and certainly not as long shelf life. I suspect some of the range difference may also be attributed to lower population. This tends to allow for more of a monopoly buy the bigger manufacturers reducing competition and this range however that's speculation on my behalf. One of the first things I'd do if I ever went to the US is go into a grocery store just to see what's there.
There is no 'Superlo' in my part of Tennessee as far as I know but it sounds a lot like Save A Lot. A few ideas to consider if you wanted to recreate this MRE just for your use - all the items may or may not be at Superlo.: 1. There is a brand of ready cooked rice called Vee Tee. It comes in a tray with a clear, plastic cover. I suggest it because, unlike the Minute Rice cups (I use those sometimes, too) the rice is not hard and dry right out of the package - would be much preferable if you had to eat it cold. There is a little more rice in the package (it says two servings but I wouldn't go that far) and it is a little more expensive (I caught them on a pretty good sale) but, again, would be a lot more pleasant if you had to eat it cold. 2. Most grocery stores, usually in the juice aisle where the juice boxes are, will have single-serving boxes of shelf stable milk. Sometimes they will only have Hershey's chocolate milk (imagine the chocolate kick putting THAT in the Carnation) but some will have white milk. 3. I saw someone (can't remember the channel or I would give credit) using this trick so it isn't my idea. If you can't get a hold of powdered milk or the individual shelf stable milk boxes you could use powdered coffee creamer to give the mix more of a 'creamy' flavor. Keep these videos coming, please. It is always fun to see what you are going to pull out of the bag next. Oh, and I don't generally eat rice with my chili. I don't eat it 'Cincinnati' or 'Skyline' style over spaghetti, either. I prefer fried cornbread (for those who haven't had that it is just like it sounds - make cornbread but then fry it in butter in portions, like pancakes).
These videos (really all of your videos) never get boring! I love your thoughts and ideas for these MREs. I'm not sure what stores you have in your area, but maybe try to do a "non grocery store" MRE. Like a large chain gas station, or a home improvement store (We have Menards and I love to buy groceries there). Congratulations on your channel growth!
Thank you so much. I plan to try a large truck stop soon. We don’t have Menards here but there’s one where my folks live. Planning to hit it next time I go see them.
have a couple of these sterno stoves. made a bottom grate for 1 out of a steamer plate a few years ago. then cut up a grate for a smaller spaced bars for a cross grate on top. this is my normal bbq grill these days. i can get 6 or 9 briquets in this for a hour of heating time. good for hot dogs an burgers. along with the odd lobster tail. compleats are a good item. the draw back with the mashed potatoes is they are 'instant' made with the full amount of water. a good recipe with instant mashed potatoes is to use from 2/3 to 3.4 the amount of water specified.
I live in the land of spaghetti in chili which I still have no use for. Rice in chili, in an emergency situation to add some calories, yes. At home when one has easy access to cheese, sour cream and picante sauce, no. I'm not a big fan of the Hormel ready meals, but used to keep a couple in my desk. they came in handy during 2020 when rioters made it impossible to get anything to eat in the downtown area where our office was at the time. I gave them to co-workers who always seemed to forget that it wasn't safe to leave the office and were hungry.
Cool video, I never heard of SuperLow but they sound nice. Hormel has plenty of menu options so it's nice to see more from them this time it looked much better.
Good video. Congrats on finding a new store. Most places you are left with only a few stores who have a stranglehold on the market. Finding alternatives is a challenge. Glad the spork worked out. I am going to try a local Hispanic store.
I love your channel. Thanks so everything you show us. You are the coolest. I love your tactical sport. Personally I think chili and rice is weird but do you. 😅
on your carnation breakfast -- one of these Nestle La Lecherita Lowfat Sweetened Condensed Milk, 3.5 Ounce will turn that into a superlative portable meal.
Going through a pack I put together last year I tried a drink mix I made up with chocolate milk mix and powdered milk so I can just mix it with water. It tasted way better than the chocolate mix with fresh milk. I was pleasantly surprised and will absolutely put this in every future pack. Note that I put it in a heat sealed pack with an oxygen absorber to keep it fresh.
It’s fine if people want to do that. I’m just using the rules as a parameter to keep me from getting lazy and adding dehydrated food because I didn’t want to look for something else.
Being a natural born Texan, I do not put rice or beans in my chili. My wife is from East Texas and her family does put rice in their chili. Another chili idea would be chili, Velveta single and Fritos for Frito Pie!
Also, Hormel and Armor both have chili that comes in retort pouches. Pace also makes Compleat style meals that come in retort pouches. They are called Ready Meals.
I like the rules, but I would like the idea of seeing an "Ultimate DIY MRE" video that pulls in from any and all sources to get some really quality MREs. The current format gives me TONS of ideas, which is good, my shopping list is already two pages long and will take me on a tour of like 10 stores around town. 🤣
@@dadbudgetadventures As I am building my own MRE ideas, I am looking very closely as accessory items, like spice packs, wet wipes, sweeteners... etc. In a pinch, even if I dont need them for this meal, who knows what the next meal might be, some salt and pepper might just make the different between life and starvation. (and yes, I am looking to build kits for those potential "ohh shit" moments we might be faced with.)
My dad had one of those Sterno stoves. I was absolutely fascinated with it as a kid. It seemed very high-tech... in 1975. Still good for car camping or a disaster. I picked one up recently for the nostalgia. Speaking of a disaster, "This MRE is good for camping... or a disaster." I see that you've been on one of my camping trips. LOL Can you post a link to the Teemu mess kit you have there? I wasn't able to find it. I will have to try that Carnation instant breakfast. Walmart has the quart pouches of powdered milk, should be interesting to test them out together. (It might be easier to portion this in an MRE-for-two or a family MRE.)
Great video Would like to see you make an MRE from Safeway or albertsons That's in my location in Washington state You may have it where you are Thank you again for the video You're great
You probably have one of the other subbrands... Albertsons Companies is one of the largest food and drug retailers in the United States, with over 2,200 stores in 34 states and the District of Columbia. That include Albertsons, Safeway, Vons, Jewel-Osco, Shaw's, Acme, Tom Thumb, Randalls, United Supermarkets, Pavilions, Star Market, Haggen, Carrs, Kings Food Markets, and Balducci's Food Lovers Market.
Your show is inspiring. I love Kool aid, however, I noticed that there is something in Kool aid that seems to make me thirsty. I don't know what it is. I get this kind of sticky, dry mouth feeling after drinking some Kool aid. I'm wondering if you get that feeling in your mouth?? Putting warm/hot water with the instant breakfast is genius! I had never thought of doing that!...Just thought of this one; What about mixing the instant breakfast with coffee??? (You see? You're inspiring!😀) A couple of things to add... Ritz crackers, snack size. Peanut butter packets...Maybe some kind of shelf stable cheese packets...(Is that even a thing?) I'd be running to the store right now, but I don't get paid until tomorrow! This was fun! Thank you!
I love the idea of doing instant breakfast with coffee. I think it would be a perfect addition. As far as the Kool Aid issue I’m betting it is the sugar content. Sugary drinks tend to leave me more thirsty than satisfied.
Hey Koolaide! How 'bout a nice Hawaiian Punch? 😂 2 person mre could be a add water only segment. (Casserole vibe or burrito bowl) It's time for another camping adventure and firepit cooking 🔥 Let's go 15k 👏 💪
Lower than some stuff! anything shelf stable is going to be loaded with salt. Some of these products will also have a good amount of potassium to help offset it/balance sodium. Ultimately if in a heavy labor, heavy physical effort scenario or just sweating a lot, the sodium will really help. Just water alone doesnt hydrate (can further deplete electrolytes). But yeh, I hate even looking at cans of soup, jars of pasta sauce, anything else I reach from my cupboard.
The carnation instant breakfast is good with powdered milk. something else that's good with powdered milk is jello pudding. made some with cold filtered stream water and it was perfect for 2 people.
For the milk option, you can use nondairy creamer and water as a substitute. Also, you can use powdered milk. The milk powder can be separated into cup amounts in an air sealed bag.
A great attempt considering the limited selections. I agree, the Carnation was too much water... Idea for future items: Japanese curry WITH meat in a pouch (amazon, or asian market), and a rice pouch. Starkist beans/tuna combo pouch Loma Linda pouch meals (the taco meat is excellent over rice or in burrito.) I did find Indian meals with wheat flatbread and there are mexican meals with shelf stable torillas, or even taco shells.
That tactical spork is cool. I bought a quart of Prairie Farms UHT whole milk at the grocery store last month to try because it doesn't need to be refrigerated. It has a self life around seven months. My plan is to try it in a few months. It says it's 100% milk . I had never heard about the UHT process before.
Have you ever made an MRE from a gas station convenient store? The reason I ask is I think the one year shelf life might really be a deterrent. They all have sandwiches that I can rat in a day or two. The gas stations all have the small canned goods too, but I have never looked at the dates. It would be a challenge for you. Cheers!
The dinty Moore stew with the rice would be my choice with the hormel compleats but I grew up eating that when I was a kid. The carnation instant breakfast is good with a cereal as the milk for a 24hr meal. Instead of oatmeal. Or with granola keep up the bonus item it’s a good option.
No rice or macaroni with my chili, but I admit I eat the rice cups in my lunch. Might try the rice with chili. I used to add a tablespoon of dry milk to the Carnation breakfast powder and water. Gave a little milk taste to it
For new places, Aldi's is big on this side of TN, not sure about East. Have you had any trouble with durability for the homemade mre's? I saw someone complaining the Compleats weren't durable enough, so I'm curious about your experience. For the bonus item, you could add something to "personalize" it, like show us if you find something with extra fiber, or high in fat, or so on. I don't know if that's harder, it just sounds more useful than just calories.
We do have Aldi but I haven’t had any luck with them because they don’t carry much in the way of shelf stable items. I know their product is constantly changing so I will keep looking. I definitely like the idea of a customized extra item.
Never thought to mix rice with chili but I bet it's pretty good. Will have to give it a go. I always liked to mix a piece of cornbread into my chili though which I imagine a lot more people would find weird than they do mixing in rice. Have a Samoan friend who swears by mixing a spoonful of mayonnaise into chili which I thought sounded horrible so I had to try it and it was pretty good kind of gave it an unctuous texture and a deeper richness to the flavor.
How about trying Swiss Miss packets, hot or cold. Highway Patrol officers often heat up their meals on the engine block of their patrol cars. Maybe cook on a stove and heat your drink on the manifold. I would like to see the 2-person MRE when you get to 15K.
I had a thought for your budget MREs. I know a lot of MREs are intended to be lighter, but what about doing a C-ration? I am confident that I would prefer a can of Wolf Chili to a Hormel pouch. If it's a local emergency or one for the car weight isn't as big an issue.
I just found your channel, so I have a lot of catching up to do. But of course I have a couple thoughts on this video. First with the Carnation breakfast. I've seen a bunch of hiking content suggesting that it mixes well with coffee. Having a "fancy" coffee drink seems like a win to me. Second, Kool-Aid isn't something I personally want to drink. I grew up on the stuff, and have happily avoided it for a few decades now. Instead, try Propel drink mix. It's more mild, provides some electrolytes, and it's pretty cheap at Wally-world.
I think going forward I’d definitely mix it with coffee. To be honest I find myself drinking water more so than the drink powders when I’m out and about. For the videos though, I like to offer some option for flavor. Definitely helps if you’re purifying your water with tabs or drops.
@@dadbudgetadventures Yeah, I'm definitely a water guy too. It's always water, black coffee, or Propel for me. I feel better when I keep some electrolytes in my diet, and I don't like taking pills. I also avoid most anything with sugar, though I do drink a Diet Pepsi about once a month. Somehow it's required with the occasional pizza or Chinese takeout. 😂 For water treatment, I'm a Sawyer guy. I keep one in my backpacking/camping kit, and one in my car's get home bag.
I am not sure what preppeung gear you have on hand... but a pressure canner i have and use. My parents have a fancy chamber vac... so i am going to get some retort packs. They are like the mre packs woth food cooked in them. I have liads of mason jars... but they are heavy, fiddly, don't stack well and the shelf life is 5 years on retort foods. I have allergies like tomato, fish and apple just to start the list. I keep thinking... chili sounds good or some beef or chicken with creole seasoning... or that roast everyone makes with the butter ranch and pepperchini peppers. I fully intend to rotate through and use them. It will require some experimenting.
@@dadbudgetadventures I just read my original comment, I understand why you didn't understand that because I use voice to text and it didn't spell snack, it said stack lol
I’ve done one from Walmart. It never goes away. I think people need to get over the idea that these need to compare to kits designed for strenuous combat activity or that someone will be living off of these for the apocalypse.
How about this idea? Your chanel, your rules. We appreciate the many new products we learn about. We understand that our local Philippine supermarkets will only stock or order a small percentage of these items for us. Still, we are happy to be able to obtain more variety than we otherwise would have. To keep boiled water (could be a necessity in an emergency situation) palatable, most of our family have settled on sachets of ice tea mix, intended to yield one (1) liter. You are free to adjust for personal preference. . The tea is available in many flavours including apple, lemon as well as tropical fruit flavours. Most markets do not stock fresh milk in the dairy case as we used to have in the US. One (1) liter nitrogen packed cartons are the norm. Fortunately, there are several high quality brands of powdered milk imported from Europe and the sachets are available in a variety of sizes. We can work with these products. We do have the S&R wholesale club, and that store stocks many Kirkland brand products.
How about a break a rule video?Assemble All Star ⭐️ MRE sourced from wherever you want. Do a little more cooking then normal or do a 6mo best by instead of a year and so on!
I do break the rules for building camping MREs like the one in the White River Monster video. I think the need to break the rules once in a while is definitely going to come into play here and there like the one from Amazon.
When you taste the cool aid you look like you are sampling a fine wine. You should have it in a fancy wine glass. That would be a morale booster.
It’s gourmet Koolaid 😂
Unfortunately the nearest one is six hours in any direction. However I will be hitting one in a couple months so we will see what the beaver yields.
Powdered milk is a thing even if they didn’t have it there. Cool vid, thanks
Carnation breakfast actually has milk powder in it already.
A couple of packets of creamer is a great idea. Thanks.
Great suggestions!
Thanks! I hope it happens soon!
Maybe instead of a calorie add on you could go with a electrolyte add on
Or both. Both is good
Definitely a good idea
This is some of my favorite YT content! Keep up the great work!
P.S. I would love to see you collaborate with “Camping with Steve”……it would be the ultimate mix of stealth camping fueled by homemade MRE adventures!
Thank you so much! I’d love to meet Steve and do a video. Might be hard to coordinate with him being in Canada but it would be fun!
@@dadbudgetadventures Yeah I definitely think it would be an awesome and entertaining collaboration if it were to come to fruition! Regardless, what the future holds…..I thoroughly enjoy your content! 🙌🏼
That would be a dream come true!Unfortunately Steve is grieving right now 😢 but would be great in the future
@@Icebearhaswares Yeah, poor Steve has dealt with tragedy lately…..R.I.P. Crazy Neighbor 🙏🏼
In the event that a desaster hits people will need a nutritional boost of either a drink or food
Definitely. Food is morale.
Thanks for the informational video. Keep up the excellent analysis of your meals. I have eaten a few compleats and some are good some are bad. Thanks
Thank you!
Use hot water for the chocolate milk powder and add one half of the half of the Milky Way bar! Delicious!
Ooh, that's a great idea.
Great video and a lot better cooking option. I use the sterno stove quite often. I appreciate that it’s inexpensive and fits into a day pack for a day long hunting trip. Because I always pack extra food just in case. Thank you
And it's super lightweight too. I have many fond memories of cooking on those things as a Scout.
@@lskazalski I have one of those I may feature in a future video.
I dont see a problem with repeating places or going to similar places again, so long as you avoid duplicates. Also same place but avoiding the obvious choices you got elsewhere, so finding new items to show.
That's exactly what I try to do. Man it gets hard once in a while but that's part of the fun.
I think it would be really fun to make an "MVP MRE Challenge"! Maybe even a 24 hr version to get more items in it?
Rules:
1) Normal Rules Apply
2) Each item must be the "best of" for its class.
3) All items must conform to a single criteria
Ex - "Best Price Challenge", "Best Taste Challenge", "Easiest to Eat", "Best Nutrition Profile".... ect
That would be fun. Need to make it happen!
Make an mre from the Food Lion grocery store. I enjoy watching your videos.
We don't have them around me but I'm always looking when I travel so hopefully I will find one somewhere.
Thanks for the mre ideas. I would like to see the 2 person mre ideas. Happy camping to you.
You're welcome. That one is coming soon!
Hello, I have a suggestion for you, in a form of a question. That Carnation instant breakfast drink that you mixed with water and said that it wasn't that creamy. What about adding a couple of those individual packets of powdered coffee creamers to it to make it creamier.
I was thinking the same thing or even powdered milk.
@@HummerGirl88 I also thought about powdered milk but I don't think they sell it in individual packets
You can get it in quart packets. If you do a 24 hour MRE could use it in 2 meals. Hardly anyone only drinks an 8 ounce drink. My thermos holds 24 ounces
@@lskazalski yes, that's true, but I only use powdered milk when I bake something, can't stand the taste as milk.
@@DavidTodd-id2fl Neither can I, but mixed with something like a protein shake, it's not bad
I think I am going to try the carnation stuff in coffee sometime see what that tastes like
I've put a scoop of my high protein meal shake mix in coffee. I use Orgain. Either the chocolate or vanilla work pretty well, but I prefer them shaken with either cows milk or soy milk. Soy adds lots of protein.
I like that idea. I think it would really work well.
Name suggestion:
T.O.N. MRE’s…This Or Nothing 😁
Store suggestion:
There are 27 Piggly Wiggly stores in Tennessee.
For a regular MRE I would add them.
another great one. tried doing a dollar store one but the one year shelf life was hurting me because they seem to get a lot of hand me downs there lol
With dollar tree becoming $1.25 Tree, many of the "deals" aren't any more. Some are... But I was shocked at how many I could beat in Walmart or other stores.
I can usually find what I need for a single meal if I go to one of the larger stores but some just don’t have a lot on hand.
It really did. And depending on how much your mom loved you would dictate how much sugar she put in it 😂
Fortunately my mom loved me a lot!@@dadbudgetadventures
I've never heard of Superlo Foods, new store for me. Thanks.
They are a smaller store and may be regional. There are only a couple in my area.
If you need an idea. A non hiking meal might be a C-rations. This was a military staple for years and there is more variety of products available with a longer shelf life.
I grew up with C rations and always loved them. Been debating making my own version for a video.
Great video DBV, I really enjoyed it.
My wife and I were Full Time RVers for just over 2 1/2 years. I really miss camping and hope to be able to get back to it someday.
Have a great week.
JT
Thank you. I really need to get out to the campsite again soon!
i put the vanilla carnation in my coffee in the mornings while backpack camping.
Probably the best at to use it
great idea.
If you had a flask with everclear or vodka that koolaid would make a nice cocktail to end the day! 😁
You are correct. There's a morale booster right there!
That’s a great product, especially for hikers needing to conserve on weight.
The stove and Fuel is in the price range of most of your viewers. Dollar tree carries the fuel. Walmart has the folding stove. The Expensive cooking items are not practical with r budgets. Great job today
Thanks. Glad you enjoyed it.
Getting there! That MRE for 2 is coming soon!
I appreciate your "rules" because they provide me some guidelines for creating my own with the highest quality possible. I thank you very much! ❤😊
You’re quite welcome. Thanks for the kind words!
That sounds like an amazing outing. You’ll be making great memories. Have fun building the MREs together. It will make the experience so much better!
Our nearest Buc-ee’s is about six hours in any direction. I do plan to try when we make a trip in a couple months though.
Fun video, I enjoyed the variety of how you're cooking/warming up your food. That spork is amazing! Can't wait to see the "MRE for couples" 😃
Thank you! Bringing that video soon!
Thank you! Let’s hope we get there soon.
I really kinda like the spaghetti. It’s a bit rich but definitely decent.
I like rice with chili off an on, I like mac n cheese mixed with it too as long as its done right.
That sounds like a great mix-in!
@@dadbudgetadventures it is, makes a small meal bigger and more filling too
Awesome video!
Wow, that brings back memories. As a Navy brat I grew up with my dad bringing home C rations. Loved the spaghetti!
I'm really enjoying these homemade MRE videos. Keep up the good work.
Glad you like them!
These are aome great ideas to create an MRE for bikepacking. Really appreciate your content. Thanks muchly!!
You’re welcome. I think I’m going to do a bikepacking video soon with MREs and the new eBike
Maybe your government food regulators have higher standards. That's not a bad thing, for sure.
A few ideas to consider if you wanted to recreate this MRE just for your use - all the items may or may not be at Superlo.:
Great ideas. Thanks!
Thanks Dad.
You’re welcome!
What a cool idea! Might need to try that out.
Love me some chili mac! Always good when you can take care of coworkers.
Another great video thanks! I find it hilarious people calling you out on the rules that you set.
What's funny is they get the rule completely wrong when they do. Trolls gonna troll.
Cool video, I never heard of SuperLow but they sound nice. Hormel has plenty of menu options so it's nice to see more from them this time it looked much better.
I’m sure they will show up again someday
Good video. Congrats on finding a new store. Most places you are left with only a few stores who have a stranglehold on the market. Finding alternatives is a challenge. Glad the spork worked out. I am going to try a local Hispanic store.
Thank you. And again, thanks for the spork. Love it!
The extra calorie item would just be a bonus. So...There may or may not be a bonus
There's that
I love your channel. Thanks so everything you show us. You are the coolest. I love your tactical sport.
Personally I think chili and rice is weird but do you. 😅
Thank you so much!
on your carnation breakfast -- one of these Nestle La Lecherita Lowfat Sweetened Condensed Milk, 3.5 Ounce will turn that into a superlative portable meal.
Ooh, that’s a great idea!
That’s a great idea
Tactical spork was cool
It was. I like that thing.
Thanks for your videos! I personally like the Completes Beef Stew. I have them for lunch occasionally.
The beef stew is pretty dang good
The spork was neat. firestarting is important.
For sure. Love those sporks.
Purely a quibble, but as long as you're making hot water for many of these, you might as well offer a dehydrated item as an alternative meal.
It’s fine if people want to do that. I’m just using the rules as a parameter to keep me from getting lazy and adding dehydrated food because I didn’t want to look for something else.
How you ever tried putting aluminum foil inside the stove to reflect the heat upwards in order to improve the output of the stove?
I have not but it’s a great idea
Being a natural born Texan, I do not put rice or beans in my chili. My wife is from East Texas and her family does put rice in their chili. Another chili idea would be chili, Velveta single and Fritos for Frito Pie!
Also, Hormel and Armor both have chili that comes in retort pouches. Pace also makes Compleat style meals that come in retort pouches. They are called Ready Meals.
That sounds wonderful
I like the rules, but I would like the idea of seeing an "Ultimate DIY MRE" video that pulls in from any and all sources to get some really quality MREs. The current format gives me TONS of ideas, which is good, my shopping list is already two pages long and will take me on a tour of like 10 stores around town. 🤣
I am for sure going to do that at some point. Right now the single store meals are going strong but that will need to be changed up before long.
LOL
Can you post a link to the Teemu mess kit you have there? I wasn't able to find it.
I will have to try that Carnation instant breakfast. Walmart has the quart pouches of powdered milk, should be interesting to test them out together. (It might be easier to portion this in an MRE-for-two or a family MRE.)
I’ll see if I can find a link. I’ve been using the app so I gotta see how that will go.
Love my Sterno stove. Brings back great memories.
I like that you use a pot like a double boiler. I do that while hiking and I also make a buddy burner (tuna can filled with cardboard and wax)
That's a cool idea. Might do that in a future video.
Mmmmm...Chili 😊😊😊 Never had Chili with rice before. I like the spork.!
Oh...almost forgot. "Commenting to help the channel" 😂😂😂
Thank you for the support! It is truly appreciated.
Those bubbles disappeared pretty fast. You sure that was water… 👀🤣
Rice goes with chile, beans go with chili, tortilla goes with chile, chips goes with chile, chile goes with chile
So what you’re saying is…we need more chili
Every time I watch your videos I think Mel Gibson is on the screen. Cool videos!
I’ll take that. Thanks!
Great video Would like to see you make an MRE from Safeway or albertsons That's in my location in Washington state You may have it where you are Thank you again for the video You're great
Neither one is nearby but I always look to see what is around when I travel. Might come across them one day.
2 person mre could be a add water only segment. (Casserole vibe or burrito bowl) It's time for another camping adventure and firepit cooking 🔥
Let's go 15k 👏 💪
I need a camping outing so bad right now. Hopefully something will come up soon.
Hormel Compleats Chili contains a whopping 990 mg of sodium!!!
Yes something your body needs, in large amounts, especially in a survival situation
Yep if you're working, hiking , one the move. And it's hot. Or you just sweat you'll need to replenish salt
It does
I dont know if you've had the hormel spaghetti, but that stuff is amazing. I eat it cold all the time, great cold, great hot.
I have and it’s pretty dang good.
The carnation instant breakfast is good with powdered milk. something else that's good with powdered milk is jello pudding. made some with cold filtered stream water and it was perfect for 2 people.
Great ideas!
For the milk option, you can use nondairy creamer and water as a substitute. Also, you can use powdered milk. The milk powder can be separated into cup amounts in an air sealed bag.
Also as weird as it may sound, powdered baby formula can be used too. My 8 and 9 year olds love to do this with the breakfast essentials.
Sounds like a reasonable option!
A great attempt considering the limited selections. I agree, the Carnation was too much water...
Idea for future items:
Japanese curry WITH meat in a pouch (amazon, or asian market), and a rice pouch.
Starkist beans/tuna combo pouch
Loma Linda pouch meals (the taco meat is excellent over rice or in burrito.)
I did find Indian meals with wheat flatbread and there are mexican meals with shelf stable torillas, or even taco shells.
Great ideas. Aaaaand now I'm hungry!
I make pasta or mashed potatoes to go with my chili
My grandmother would put leftover chili on rice or mashed potatoes. Sometimes, she added elbow macaroni noodles to stretch the batch.
I love it with pasta. Haven’t tried mashed potatoes though. Might have to test that out.
I’m going to try the shelf stable milk soon. I’ll have to break the rules if I do a video of it.
Don't break the rules. I forgot about the rules.@@dadbudgetadventures
Cool idea
Thank you
I would like to see the 2 person MRE ideas, also see the channel hit 15K plus.
Coming soon. Both, I hope!
Cheers!
I have tried and failed but I’m going to keep at it until I get it done.
Great ideas!
No rice or macaroni with my chili, but I admit I eat the rice cups in my lunch. Might try the rice with chili. I used to add a tablespoon of dry milk to the Carnation breakfast powder and water. Gave a little milk taste to it
Great idea. I need to find the dry milk sachets people keep telling me about.
Wanna hear another one? Have a peanut butter sandwich with your chili
@@dadbudgetadventuresI do like a spoonful of peanut butter on top of a microwaveable burrito. I'm in to try that.
Pleasant surprise for this morning
Glad you enjoyed it.
How about trying Swiss Miss packets, hot or cold. Highway Patrol officers often heat up their meals on the engine block of their patrol cars. Maybe cook on a stove and heat your drink on the manifold.
I would like to see the 2-person MRE when you get to 15K.
Interesting ideas. Definitely looking forward to the 2 person and the 15k subs!
I had a thought for your budget MREs. I know a lot of MREs are intended to be lighter, but what about doing a C-ration? I am confident that I would prefer a can of Wolf Chili to a Hormel pouch.
If it's a local emergency or one for the car weight isn't as big an issue.
I have considered that. Maybe I will do a throwback to the ones I ate as a kid.
Subbed for the MRE2. Curious what you'd do with a 24 hour ration-type pack.
I have a 24 hour kit from Walmart I did a few weeks back if you want to poke around for that one.
This menu was a win! Everything you put in here i liked! Well besides the candy bar! (Im diabetic, dont judge me! Haha)
No judgment at all. The best part of these is that you build it for your needs and swap out what you want!
For water treatment, I'm a Sawyer guy. I keep one in my backpacking/camping kit, and one in my car's get home bag.
Im 77 an all ways loved rice with chili..
That video was my first time trying it. I rather like it. Certainly makes the chili serve more that way.
Great ideas. I’m not brave enough to make my own yet but we will see where this goes.
Booter stack is always a good idea, just in case.
I’m not familiar with that
@@dadbudgetadventures a calorie booster snack is always a good idea, just in case you have an emergency and you need those extra calories.
@@dadbudgetadventures I just read my original comment, I understand why you didn't understand that because I use voice to text and it didn't spell snack, it said stack lol
Meanwhile I’m over here googling “booter stack” trying to figure out if it’s something I need to know about so I can be hip 😂
If you are ever in the northeast, Stop and Shop, Market 32/Price Chopper, Hannaford, Wegmans, IGA supermarket.
I will add them to the list.
They do have shelf stable milk which could be a option
I’ve looked at it but the shelf life is too short for my requirements. I would definitely use it for a camping MRE I intend to use right away though.
Mix the carnations into coffee it acts like sweetener a bit still need some sugar and if you want to get fancy add a scoop of peanut butter powder
That’s not a bad idea
I have never heard of rice with chilli, I am intrigued and intend to try iit
Seems a little weird but it works!
@@dadbudgetadventures thank you for that feedback
Perhaps you'll consider a 24 hr ration after this series concludes. That might help the people hassling you about caloric concerns.
I’ve done one from Walmart. It never goes away. I think people need to get over the idea that these need to compare to kits designed for strenuous combat activity or that someone will be living off of these for the apocalypse.
@@dadbudgetadventures but the apocalypse is so much more fun to think about than their desk jobs.
For real
To be fair it is pretty much “my channel, my rules” but some people still gotta say something 🤷
We beg you to bring forth the MRE for two video.
It’s gonna happen. Hopefully soon!
What about adding powdered milk to the Carnation instant breakfast mix?
You can do that, for sure. They just didn’t have individual packs at the store where I got this so I didn’t want to include it.
