An "All-Stars" menu of your favorite items from all the places you've been shopping would be great. After all, that's what Uncle Sam does with the DoD MREs, they build a menu and go to a variety of contractors to source the items.

Multistore and two person MRE's would be cool to see. What also would be a novel idea would be themed ones such as Mexican, Tex-Mex, Asian, Italian etc.
On one of your videos I watched more recently, you mentioned accessory packs, I think that would be pretty cool to see those completed and trialed with your homemade MRE's.
I'm actually quite surprised that the channel doesn't have a bigger following considering how well done your videos are and your ability to present them so well.

Years ago, I hosted and ran a post-apocalyptic roleplaying game loosely based on the Fallout computer game. One session, I thought it would be fun to have the characters discover an abandoned prepper site and one of them found an opened box of MRE's. I went to the local surplus store and bought a case of MRE's so I could give each of my players one, at random so they would know what eating an MRE was like, "pay back" a couple of the guys for bringing snacks and drinks, and to have a little fun and some immersion.
I ended up with beef and gravy. A minute after I opened it, one of my friends sniffed at the air and said, "I smell Alpo. You don't have a dog, where did that come from?" Turns out, he was smelling my beef and gravy from across the room. So....I bought a can of Alpo and sure enough, it smelled and tasted just like the beef and gravy MRE, which is also what cheap canned beef and gravy smells and tastes like. They're all prepared similarly, partially cooked and then the canning process finishes off the cooking process. Honestly, the cheap canned beef (like that stuff at Ollie's and Bargain Hunt) is pretty gross, Alpo actually tastes better and has some crunch to it. The MRE tasted best of all three, but the Alpo crunch is neat. I give Alpo 3 Mad Max's and 4 to the MRE Beef and Gravy entree.

I have a Barocook set and it's great for heating meals in the passenger seat while you go off on a road trip adventure. Those candies look just like the cherry drops (and lemon drops) that used to be stored in 5 gallon buckets in the Civil Defense shelters that we stocked during the Cold War (that's the one that Reagan won for us). You make a mean MRE.

Man, this stuff is just neat. Awhile back, my wife and I picked up a case of HDRs to have a ready to go dinner option. It was never really about emergencies, but rather not having to stop for food if we were traveling. I think it worked out to be $2 a meal. In the USA, apparently Walmart do a Merlot (13% vol) for 2 bucks 92. Of the seven ninety two budget that leaves enough for two cans of that chicken and a cent remaining. If it is to be heated, a small amount of the merlot in the chicken _(the can-water of which would be firstly removed and used with a penny's worth of stock in some other dish or soup)_ would be pretty decent compared to some instant packet meal _(even though some of those are not too shabby)._ Then there would be some wine left instead of those snacks which are largely carbs _(as the wine has carbs)._ Even after 4 meals made form the above, it'd take a while to get bored of it. You also get a free glass bottle out of it (about 750ml). Given the approach of making multiple MRE kits _(because SHTF or prepping scenarios are unlikely to be prepped to be solely a single day in duration),_ a person would be able to eventually include a cigarette in the kit (wrapped for fresh storage). Variations can include something like cocoa powder and raw sugar, however doing without the sweet or candy foods would be worth it for the above for which herbs and spices have not been included and plenty of that is grown for free in USA _(sage in a plant pot or thyme or rosemary or whatever)._ To make the dish that "complex" _(which could be debated since some easy version recipes can be prepped in advance)._ You guys in some places of Yankland have citrus growing on a tree just kicking about like it's no big deal, and fish can "cook" in citrus juice (like lime or whatever). A large subset of food science is still Victorian style ingredients like vinegar, sugar, stock (or stock-cube) and salt as preservative. There are some modern stabilisers and so on but if it is only a year, things can be done. Also reading the back of the dried seasoning or food-mix packets reveal things like chill-con-carne has a teaspoon or turmeric or so in it. Such spices, sugar, salt, vinegar, can be stored in sealed (e.g. the healed-sealed "straw" trick)._ The "food prepping" come the disaster-day really just involves flinging all those spice-sugar-salt ingredients with vinegar into a small cup and mixing it with a metal stick (or whatever) for a minute. Considering that gadget or the military MRE bags take 10 minutes or so to cook, that extra minute would be worth the "labour". I would not be surprised if that gadget had a bit more mileage in it such that covering it with a folded tea-towel or similar insulation means raw (albeit rinsed) rice might cook in it's own heat with water _(whether or not a cardamon pod or some flavour had been added)_ for an extra 10minutes so that 20 minutes (strictly keeping that lid on) cooks the rice. That saves a bit of budget (maybe a quid or buck) because basic rice is far cheaper in a dry bag. It would be tempting to stir half way but it might be counterproductive (or it might work) and probably causes the heat to vanish, thereby requiring a 2nd heat-pouch. Realistically, the chef of these dishes is not going to be in a foxhole and so some level of normality in the SHTF scenario can be assumed when using that gadget, even if it is outdoors (or in a building). The video concept mentioned it being in a drawer (furniture) not a wilderness foxhole via an alice-bag.
If the bloke next to you bust out wine a cigs as his "MRE" with some meat on that prepping-scenario day, he'd have levelled-up in the morale highscore table. In that moment, he'd probably acquire new friends immediately, whether he liked it or not.

How odd coming across this video,I’ve been thinking lately about making my own MRE’s,but I haven’t said a word about it to anyone.I like your MRE,but I’d add single serving juice mix & probably 2 packets of single serving coffee, maybe a chocolate bar or a couple of mini bars like the Halloween kind and I’d increase the food quantity enough to make it into a 24 hr package including emergency water packets because they come in compact plastic/foil containers that take up less room than conventional bottles, unless space isn’t an issue.

Reason I'm asking I hate nursing home food and buy several packaged salads to eat delivered from grocery stores but I would love a hot meal or soup but no way to heat it. That pack you just used was heating the food no flame no electricity that would be ideal for me.

I am allowed a small fridge at this nursing home but not a microwave. You just can't believe how bad the food tastes. I would love a hardy soup or pasta as a change from cold items. My biggest complaints about MREs are the Overfortification, and the Experimental Entrees. I've yet to eat an MRE that doesn't taste like a whole bottle of One-A-Day Vitamins as an ingredient. The entree, sides and even the drinks are way overfortified with vitamins and minerals. Your body can only absorb so much of this, and then you excrete the rest, but it really effects the taste, and to my pallette, it's just plain Nasty.
Second, the entree combinations they come up with are just too exotic and often poorly done.
I do keep some ready to eat foods, but for longevity, I prefer freeze drieds, and our B.O.B.s reflect that.

    • @dadbudgetadventures

To be fair they are designed for a certain level of performance that a civilian market doesn’t really meet. So all the extra stuff really isn’t needed by most people. If you aren’t rucking 150 pounds of gear in 100 degree heat it’s kind of a waste.

The barrel cook is an interesting device simple but interesting a bit overpriced considering what it is it's basically a Tupperware container I may attempt to make my own barrel cook and see if I can make it cheaper
However there was one thing that was an instant no an instant turn off about your flameless heater and that's the price of the heater packages $26 for 10 of them? That's $2.60 per meal That's absolutely insane there is no reason for those things to cost that much they should be pennies
Do you have a more affordable source for the water activated heater packets?

I'm going through your videos a bit and I wanted to know if you tried any 24 hour MREs or a breakfast style MRE that might have decent breakfast food? I have a emergency tin of scrambled eggs, I'm sure just finding those by themselves in a individual bag would be difficult without just going to the camping supplies. Just interested on your take. I've tried a lot of those pre-packaged Chicken, Tuna, sardines and other seafood and they would be pretty good, even if its for breakfast. Again, thanks for the videos!

Great video, I really enjoyed it.
One of the things my wife and I always keep stocked up in our emergency food pantry is Keystone Canned Meats. I came across this video that showed how Keystone Canned Meats are made, and I was amazed that there are only 2 ingredents in Keystone Canned Meats, it's just Meat & Sea Salt, that's it. You can literally open a can of Keystone canned chicken and make sandwiches with it. And then use the broth to make soup later if you want. Check out this video on how they make Keystone canned meats: ua-cam.com/video/p40gaCou2Qs/v-deo.htmlsi=UcDmWjIdsW_QuSPK .
