    There is a chocolate based savory sauce from Mexico called Mole, ( Moleay). It's has a dark chocolate overall flavor but there are usually around seven different types of chili peppers in it, peanuts or peanut butter. It's tangy and savory and tastes like nothing else. I've lived in Texas my entire life and Mole is one of my favorite sauces on enchiladas, tamales and just about anything savory.

    The “omelette” in Spain is called a tortilla. Not as many eggs as you think. Mostly potatoes, but a very good dish.

    That breakfast omelette with some hot sauce sounds like a winner tbh. Heat, eat, go is a perfect camping breakfast.

    The omelet looked really good. I bought a couple of the Chef 5 Minute Meals at the Exchange (Military PX) for about $5.00 each, they were not bad but like you said a little pricy for what you got. Enjoyed the video, I think you can get good content with out having to put together a full MRE.

    Both the Americans and Russians abandoned "tube food" back in the 70s or so. Ironically, the only ones who still use it are U-2 pilots, because they can't open their helmets while in flight. Oh, and "astronaut ice cream" has never flown in space. It's purely a gift shop novelty.

    I have to admit this MRE was a little on the strange side 😂. But then again I could actually see enjoying the potato omelette plus the chocolate tamale with a cup of coffee. Overall it looked pretty good but I’d scratch the toothpaste pizza. 😂 That being said I would love seeing another video of the things you have left over. Sometimes in life strange can end up being very enjoyable. OVERALL A FANTASTIC JOB AND VIDEO

    Very interesting selection! The egg dish in a can seemed to me to be the most appealing. I've tried selection of tubed food that said it was for SR-71 / U2 operators. They all tasted like and had the consistency of baby food. The interesting thing was the device that squeezed the tube as you put pressure on the trigger. Thank you for the video.

  • @CMarie404

    I'm always down for the odd and bizarre. Nothing here I have seen before. The breakfast cup of noodles is something I would grab out of curiosity for sure. I think the egg & potato is the winner, especially with salsa. Heck yeh!
    I'd pass on tube pizza. I imagine that being my walking around snack, and any folks passing by would just presume it is a tube of toothpaste I'm snacking on.😆 Bet they'd keep their distance. 🙃
    Was hoping(?) it at least tasted something like pizza. I have had meal purees before. Not something I recommend as it is void of texture (and joy), but some taste exactly as they should, like down to layers of flavor and nuance. (I do product reviews/testing and have tried a lot of stuff over the years).
    This was a blast, thanks :)

    The tortilla de patatas is often served as a tapas, cut into cubes and served on toothpicks. Or you can cut into thick slices and make a sandwich. There’s versions with chorizo and I’ve seen it sliced and served with salad for a light dinner or lunch

    Not sure if youre familiar with south american style mole (moe-lay) sauce, but most of them have chocolate in it as an ingredient also. I make a budget version of it with barbecue sauce and cocoa powder. Lol

    • @dadbudgetadventures
      @dadbudgetadventures  6 місяців тому +4

      I am familiar with mole. Chocolate is so much more versatile than most Americans realize.

    • @JAB671
      @JAB671 6 місяців тому +1

      I was going to mention mole as that is exactly what the sauce looked like. As far as the almonds, it was mentioned that he couldn't see any almonds. Some Mexican sauces, including mole, often have almonds or some, other kind of nuts blended into them to thicken the sauce. I think 'chocolate almond' was just kind of a misleading name - it should have just said 'Tamale in Mole' because I think 'chocolate almond' does make it sound more like a sweet tamale.

    Great video! Today's food choices sparked some ideas for some new videos you might like to try:
    1. MRE Use Me First - the food in this MRE would all be packaged in containers you could reuse (for instance the omelet tin), so if you are in a crisis which requires you to survive on MREs for a multi-day period, you would eat this MRE first and use the containers to consume later MREs in less user friendly packaging.
    2. MRE All Cups - Everything comes in a cup like insta-noodles.
    3. MRE Super Hot - One item in the MRE comes with a self-heater like today's chili and you use it to heat everything in the MRE one after another until the self-heater poops out. How much could you cook before the chemical reaction stops and the bag loses its heating power?
    Keep up the great vids!!!

    This one was a lot of fun. I'll have to look for those omelets the next time I venture into World Market.
    As mentioned in another comment I suspect that tamale should have been called 'Tamale in Mole'. Calling it a 'chocolate almond' tamale gives an entirely, different presentation and it is completely understandable that you thought it would be a sweet sauce. I think it is a little misleading even though the most common mole does have cocoa in it and often does have almonds or other nuts ground/blended into the sauce to thicken it. I'm thinking the tamale would have been better as a side with the chili (or put the chili over the tamale and make what is called a 'full house') especially since you said there wasn't much food in the chili pouch.

    Beautiful Bride has been scoring a few new items each week at the Korean food shops popping up around town. Absolutely, we try everything out at home and get a "score" from the gang before it is considered for addition to their school emergency kits. Some of these products such as Korean Bulgogi noodles have become family favourites and Maria purchases them in the economy five(5) pack. ***Follow up on the tamarind from a past video. Maria informed me that it is available as a dried powder in small sachets and is finely ground the same as spices like pre-ground pepper. She always attempts to use fresh tamarind in her cooking saving a few sachets for emergency use, if the fresh product is not available. She agreed that what you displayed in the video surely looked like tamarind. You may not find it in the ingredients list as many things like this have different names in the various regions where it grows

    Just found your channel and am enjoying it. May I suggest listing the MRE items in the video descriptions? Also, is there a reason you use mylar bags rather than just using ziplocks? I use mylar for storing raw rice, beans, etc and drop in oxygen absorbers. All the items I've seen you use (so far, I just started watching the videos) come in their own packages so I'm not seeing the need.

    • @dadbudgetadventures
      @dadbudgetadventures  6 місяців тому

      So the reason I don’t list the items in the description box is a bit self-serving. My concern is that people will click the video and go see what’s in it and stop watching. This would crush the algorithm and destroy my channel.
      As far as the Mylar bags, I use them to keep light out but also it’s about visual appearance for the video. Ziplock bags don’t look good and don’t allow for any element of surprise as I reveal the contents.
      So you can see there is a formula to the videos that requires people to want to stick around for the big reveals.

      Not at all. I deliberately cut after taking a bite because I don’t want anyone to have to watch or listen to me chew. I find it a bit off putting myself so I try to make sure it doesn’t do that to the viewers.

    The Russians aboard the ISS usually eat canned foods such as borscht and canned meat and potatoes, along with packages of dehydrated food. Very much like old C-rations or K-rations. They don't use tubes any more. It's easier to send a commercial can of tuna fish than sending a specialized tube.
    The Americans, on the other hand, will use a variety of different MRE-type components and dehydrated and preserved food. They've displayed improvized "pizzas" and "burritos" that they made out of tortillas with MRE cheese to stick the toppings in place.
    But, whenever a supply ship is in town, it's highly popular because they usually get fresh fruit on the shipment.
    Spicy dishes are popular in space because your face becomes puffy due to the lack of gravity to pull your blood downward, so you can't smell or taste as well as at home. Freeze dried spicy shrimp cocktail is a classic US favorite.
    The astronauts from different countries trade items during meals, just like our soldiers do with MREs. Eating is a community event to share time together.

    going to have to go in search of the omelette in a can they look so amazing.
    One thing i recently tried was self heating rice meals from Fairiemor, these come with a water activated heat pouch and taste so good, one thing to note all of the instructions are in mandarin, however the google camera translate converts the cooking instructions perfectly, worth checking out

    I tried the Fillos Walking Tamale Salsa Roja and it was absolutely delicious. Excellent corn and bean flavor, and a surprising amount of heat, although labelled as medium heat...They sell them at my Walmart, and I'll try the Salsa Verde next. I'm going to skip the Habanero one, which is labelled as hot, and the medium heat Salsa Roja was plenty hot for me.

    Couldn't find those kind of canned omellette on amazon but after searching "thickit canned food" I found two options of canned omelettes along with a whole host of other canned food purees for people with swallowing dysphagia. So texture will be drastically different I imagine.

      I found same on Amazon. The purees are thick, and oddly taste just like the food they are supposed to be (Hormel makes a version. I had opportunity to try their turkey and dressing, and its a super soft mash. Yet tastes exactly like their regular version. Found it nice on crackers), but no-- not likely something you want if you dont need it. Was curious if that toothpaste pizza would have similar vibe, but sounds bland. As DBA mentioned the product he has is a World Market specific item. I eventually found it. Really sounds good!

    I think Billy Idol said it best... More, more, more... more more more!
    I finally built my first two MREs this week. Though I am going for more of an all day pack, to be supplemented with other emergency ration types of food and relying VERY heavily on snacks like nuts and other high protein items with only two entre items per day (one that can be heated for dinner and one best eaten cold for a quick lunch). Mostly put together for a day of heavy activity, like hiking distance, with minimum number of breaks. So really just going for energy to stay moving without much care for comfort, with the dinners being something to look forward to at the end of the day, for morale. 🍻
