  • The $500 Camper Build continues! Going to be moving things in a new direction, kinda. We are dropping the idea of keeping mobile and dare I say it, turn it into a tiny home.
Sorry for the distortion on the microphone, it was windy as usual.
This is 1978 Coleman two room Pop Up Camper, Valley Forge model? Not too sure. I picked this up for $500 and started remodeling it and converting the canvas soft side to a hard side. But, after working on it I realized that would not be the best Idea to try and tow this thing around, even with the upgraded axles on it. We are still going to do the Soft Side to Hard Side conversion, but now we will not be as concerned with weight or mobility. This will open up a lot of possibilities for the build. So, with a little piece of land to park it on we are turning it into a permanent campsite with our very own tiny home that when we are not using it will rent it out on Hipcamp and Airbnb as a short term rental for camping, or Glamping if you prefer.
You'll notice I am not permanently securing any of the panels, this is mostly a mockup build. Once happy with the results we will tear it all down and take all the pieces down to the property to re-assemble in its permanent home.

This is the only Pop-up conversion that retains the actual space that the canvas sections provided , , ,kudos to you man , , im certain you will find a way to reinforce the exterior sections in a clever way , , , heck after while people could pay you to convert their pop-ups 👍🎃👍👍

So if you are going to be moving this trailer to a permanent Location on a piece of property that you own to reinforce those kickouts for the front and back extensions, you're absolute method to do that is to build walls on the sides and the front or outer facing. Wall and make them giant storage cabinets! In other words, you're going to build storage compartments that go up underneath to support those! Because with a pop-up pamper like that, you are at lack of storage space! So instead of using just 4 / 4 to support it, build a compartmeant that you can permanently place underneath there and if you ever have to move this camper. Well then , you can slide them out and you can move them into another location where the camper will be at!
They also have fiberglass paint, which is used specifically for boats! When you make whatever it is that you're going to support those extenders with even deciding that you have on the outside. Because this is the first video that I'm actually watching. And I am now a new subscriber. You can place that on the exterior and you don't ever have to worry about penetration from water and weather!
The other thing you could do is create more space because if you are going to move this camper, what you can do is on the left side as you walk in, you can actually put a kick out beyond the back of that camper, so you can actually lay flat.
Instead of instead of making space on the inside of what's already existing.

If you gusset those outriggers with triangular 2x4 frames , maybe 4 or 6 of them , it will be solid as a rock.

If you ever do another one. Use foam board.

Mistake you made is that you didn't extend the bottom of bed first. You could have put a plywood underneath the original plywood that overlaps much as it needed to expand the size of the bed. Than start building onto the new plywood instead of the old base. This way you could fit into that bed because you made it longer than it was originally or kept the same length. All that material that you put in takes up many inches making the whole bed area much smaller than originally was if you don't expend the bottom 1st and build inward.

Just finished converting my 2001 Jayco and all i can say when i see your project is one word: Weight?
I used essentially no plywood or any sheets of wood for siding on my project and the whole trailer is pretty heavy even without the slide-outs. Without cabinets or other fancy interior features (have not got around to doing that). Also wind resistance is huge - a towing nightmare. I'm really curious to see how you'll make out and if there will be no leaks with the moving parts... and towing will be challenge, just a heads up.. i actually blew the head gasket on my 3.5L V6 towing mine for the first time, after about 25 miles. And yours looks way heavier...

I guess you've discovered that the tires cannot support the weight. I made the same mistake. Second time I did this I used leuwan and painted with flex seal. ½partical board? Too heavy!

I changed out the axles and tires. Had to make a custom axle for the additional weight.

Disassemble and then reassemble when at location. It will basically be a tiny home, too heavy now so change of plans.

He should have built it at his camp so it didn't have to be moved.

It's a mock up built at home where all my tools and power are, then disassembled and put back together on location. Didn't want to drive 2 hours to the closest store for a screw or 2x4's.

R.I.P wheel bearings.... tires, springs, brakes, tongue, frame. These lightweight trailers arent designed to handle all that additional weight youve added- they can barely handle what they are. You always see them on the sides of the highways jacked up with blown out tires and hubs. 😂
Another youtube genius will find out soon enough.
