This moss has a nice appearance.
I got a sample.
I was not able to identify this moss or whatever it is...hope you can do better on this matter.

You know how it goes with plants...they are not in rush at all. And I am a slowpoke for that matter too ;)
I'm pretty sure that type of moss is Saber Tooth moss, or plagiomnium ciliare. It's pretty common around the City, in parks and yards, but not where there's too much concrete.
One note about collecting wild moss: It's pretty slow growing, especially at certain times of the year. Be careful not to over collect! Hobbyists can wreak havoc on ecosystems if they tip the balance too much. Private yards are good places to find moss, since there are fewer collectors moving through them, and they can be monitored easily.

I stopped all my attempts to identify mosses and plants - it takes so much time. Identification is important but very complicated matter even for well educated in this field. I figure that most people like me would go with visual description and try whatever they could get in local parks. Besides, the local variations often significantly different.
I have my share of worries about over collecting any wild samples. And you are right - unintentionally, harm may come even from too many people going through one location. For that reason alone I never publish exact location of where I collect things. My very cool videos about snapping turtle nests in Central park would never get to public - I am not sure if City park rangers aware of those places or perhaps they don't want to talk about it for the same reasons ;)

Another excellent video Michael. I will add a short video that shows moss in one of my tanks over the weekend. I believe that preventing snails is very difficult when you use land moss, a thorough cleaning and at least a few weeks of quarantine should help however. Snails will only multiply enormously if a tank is being overfed. It would be possible to ensure that moss is snail free by using a weak bleach solution dip, but I would always be concerned about adding dipped plants to an established aquarium. Keep up the good work.

No, not really...I did it that long to make sure it grows - otherwise it may get spoiled in the aquarium messing up everything else. Even samples of moss that I had previously check and know that it grows underwater may get spoiled. Usually it happens in the first week.

I did it, because they multiply very quickly and their feces filled my tank.
Yes. It is snail. I keep them in my all aquariums alone with other tiny critters (seed shrimps, cyclopes, planarian and daphnia). Guppy have snail eggs for snakes ;) Planarian do too. And I add adult snails in fish food flakes.
I think my guppies don't find the snail eggs tasty, cause they don't eat it at all. so i have to remove them all. but thank for sharing your thought anyway. this vid is great as always.

I got a few types of mosses in my backyard. They didn't really die in the tank but didn't really thrive either. The mosses stopped growing after 2 weeks.
I ended up taking them out and put them in a terrarium for propagation.

I prefer to use at least 2-3 types of plants in my small aquariums. You will have more room for more plants :)
It's good to have slow growing plants for low maintenance, fast growing plants for fish food and oxygen, and something between. The short answer is yes.
I have youtube friends from different parts of the world, including Britain. People have different experience growing land moss underwater regardless of location. I have samples of the same moss yielding different results. It seems more important not where the moss was collected, but how thoroughly it was cleaned. Well, of course there are many other factors that may contribute to the end results.

how to test which moss type gives the most oxygen? are bubbles the only way and how often to check?

Presence of oxygen bubbles is one way. Though, it may work only if moss or plants are exposed to appropriate light wave long enough to produce noticeable amount of oxygen a day. For example, I keep it on a windowsill exposed to direct sunlight - that is where it is very noticeable. Nurseries placed away from window get much less light and I see less or no bubbles at all. Yet, rate of plants or moss growing is another way to look on it. Fast growing moss/ plants should produce more oxygen even you may not see oxygen bubbles.
Also, fish keepers use commercial test stripes and such to test oxygen (and everything else) level in water. You can look it up in your local pet stores. I don't use those types of tests and could not tell you much about them.

Different mosses respond differently...
Some fast growing mosses shown signs of growth in a matter of weeks. The slow growing may stay without changes for months.

I am with guppies until get a stable strain of dwarf guppy. Then I may get room/ aquariums and time to try different fish ;)
I do not know if that is a moss or a miniature fern, or a combination of both.
This year I am going to take a closer look on it - on the back side of the leaves, to see if it is a fern.

Temperature in my apartment is set all year around between 72 - 76 F. It looks like close enough to the temperature in your home. Guppy like tropical temperature which means lowest 64 F all year around (all year around is important part ;) Warmer temperature ( around 78 F) prompts guppy for breeding. Though, my guppy breed about 9 times an year - so it should be alright.

Thanks so much Michael for getting back to me. I have a little container set up right now with some pothos which has some algae on its roots & a tiny moss ball. The temp of the water is reading 67.5 °f so I think this should be okay for some fry. Like yourself I really enjoy experimenting, which gives me some different options to try out.

I have had several cuttings of Pothos in jars of water for mths now. That is why some of them have algae on their roots.
I live in South Eastern Alberta, Canada.
I also forgot to mention that I put a little piece of Indian Almond leaf in my fry container. I have it on hand for use in my Betta tank. It releases tannins in the water & is suppose to be medicinal with antibacterial & antifungal properties.

at least you've got the patience. i love your passion man, but aquariums are so expensive. pls show how to make one diy. i've turned my pool into a pond, but found a passion for moss also so i need some seperate aquariums for that. my whole garden will be a rainforrest/fern/moss garden one day. we can dream. and my pools will always be clear. i started introducing grass on the pool surface on polistyrene slabs after watching your vd on it. did i say i love your passion?

@@tonymontana3949 There are couple ways to spot whatever tiny critters you may have in water. One way is to drain the water in clear plastic or glass jar and let it sit. Then look if you can see any moving dots in that water. Use a pipette or whatever tube you use to drain water to catch and transfer them where you need them.
Another way is to stir water gently in one direction, for example clockwise. Then look if anything moves across or against water current - those are live critters ;)
I found that same Moss in forest near River AND get İt..but its not growing in aquarium with led lighting.. u can See in my videos
It depends on what light wave your LED emits and power of the LED. I am working on video about using LED lights for this matter, thought it is long way before I publish it.
Most mosses that I know of don't like direct sunlight. Try putting it beside the window or put some shade mesh over it. Also, some mosses put off chemicals that keep other plants from growing near it.

There are many mosses...surely there are some that like sunlight more than others do.
Initially, I grow all samples exposed to direct sunlight. Those samples that start growing underwater gets moved to aquariums with fish - I don't keep those aquariums exposed to direct sun light (I keep them closer to a window though). The chemicals that mosses (and some plants) use to protect space is...well, it's interesting topic for long conversation. There are compatibility issues between mosses, plants and all other live creatures as well. I use up to 4 types of plants/ mosses in my aquariums. Those are already tested by time - seems doing good, less or more. The only compatibility issue I came across so far is between filamentous algae and moss (actually it's with plants ;). Though, it is not a chemical.
Your biggest clue will be how much light is where you found it growing. I suspect at least 1 of those plants is a fern.
The one shown in this video could fern. I did not identify it yet...It grows in the same spots where I picked many other samples of mosses (and those are mosses). I am planning to make couple more inquiries this year about this particular sample for identification purpose.
I added moss to my Aquarium yesterday but some parts of it dont look very good i hope it dont die. Today im going to buy endler Guppies because they are very small i try to breed them smaller i hope It works just like it worked with your guppies

Michael Langerman i wanted to do the same but i there was to much Moos so some parts didnt get much light but the parts which Look healthy produce oxygen and my shimps love the moos btw u should add shimps to your Aquarium too, very nice animals

I'm pretty hopeless at keep aquatic plants alive. I'm trying Again in onew new Betta tank atm with good old Valis and 2 other ants I can't recall sorry (a week in and the Valis isn't looking so good, at that's even using ant growth substrate 😩🤔😔
I want to try taking land moss and doing similar to what your showing. I'd luv to be able to get a clean land moss to then ant in my two aquariums, one with a Betta and other with male n femalir pair of Peackock Gudgeons.
But I may even try a creature free glass jar full water terrarium also moreso to see how it all grows, then to cut n multi mosses etc as you've done. Really interesting watching these videos. It's amazing how life and our ecosystem can alter n thrive.

Among aquatic plants I personally like a dwarf lily. Well, I have elodea, hornwort, hairgrass, Marimo, and duckweed in every aquarium. There are really easy to grow.

Michael Langerman I would like to ask you a another question.Does money plant/pothos grow fully submerged in water and do you have any tanks only with that plant as I would like to know if it provides oxygen for fish when only its roots are submerged
@@kishor5389 Pothos grow fully submerged underwater. It grows very slowly. Plants do provide and need both: oxygen and CO2 as result of photosynthesis. Plants release and consume oxygen/CO2 through leaves. Oxygen released in air may get indirectly into water through water to air surface exchange. Roots in aquarium serve only for intake.

I put some Moss I found in the woods, and they started growing very fast. They’ve slowed down know tho
This way it should grow. Moss as algae and plants need sunlight and nutrition to grow. In aquarium it takes nutrition dissolved in water. It should slow down grows once the available amount of nutrition (waste) is reduced - meaning that water in aquarium gets much cleaner ;)
I trim moss to use it either in other (new) aquarium or to make fish food flakes - creating cycle (fish eat - poop - plants consume fish waste - repeat it again ;)

Yeah, love your videos. I took your advice that you gave me through comments on previous videos and I’ve taken used Gatorade bottles and have algae, and moss samples in them. :) if they’re good to go, my next guppy batches will go in containers with them because my last guppy batch was born in a 60 and they were eaten by my eel. :( may even use the method to separate my Betta fry when I have to do that.
Edit: of course I’ll use higher bottles than Gatorade. I’m just using those to sample mosses that grow in my yard so I know exactly what species can grow in water
I am testing different way of adopting land mosses/plants to grow underwater.
Will make a video update as soon as get some results to show ;)

Michael Langerman awesome! I will be waiting for it :) this hobby keeps me busy, that’s for sure! But it’s a good kind of busy. Very relaxing. I know that in my area, the species that doesn’t grow flowers or pods, can survive in water. I think I have... 3-4 different species of moss right now. One I’m having a hard time determining if it’s the same species. They look similar but one has bulbs and one doesn’t.

Michael Langerman I’m taking into account the way they grow and where they grow so I can do some research. Just found some more kinds, some are very long and thin, some like like tiny Christmas trees, and some are almost spongey. I’ve found some on my trees, some just on my lawn, and some on my back porch steps. It’s very interesting :) I’m building a summer garden pond to place my Betta until I find them homes (after they grow) and I’ve decided to put a whole piece of driftwood root system, and I’ve covered the pieces just out of the water in moss, all around the pond where dirt is, and some on rocks... I put them accordingly to the way I found them, for a higher chance of success with it. Just wish I had a better idea of what mosses Illinois has naturally and invasively

I have a question, can I use chlorinated water for growing moss.
Short answer is no. Chlorine kills organic: bacteria, algae, plants, tiny critters.
I use chlorinated water to initially wash moss and to fill up the nursery - initially. Chlorine evaporates from water during the next 24 hours. After that, add only dechlorinated water.
PS: NYC use chlorine for disinfection of tap water. Chlorine evaporates in 24 hours from water kept in open jar.
That is how I get dechlorinated water.
Many cities use chloramine for disinfection of their tap water. Chloramine does not evaporate! It can be boiled out (over 20 minutes of boiling).

that's a Plagiomnium species, likely P. cuspidatum (since you're in the US). I wonder what's the current status of it?
Thank you for identifying it! I completed the project growing land mosses underwater in 2023 to make space for new projects. There are a couple species of all mosses I like the most among those that I tried. They all are local to NYC (Roosevelt island and Central park). They grow underwater in long strings and continue to grow out of water. Eventually the strings protrude out of the water start bending under the gravity and keep growing in water again. Currently I experiment with land mosses growing in high humidity on land platforms mounted above water level in my paladarium. Will share more about it in future videos ;)
That sounds great! I actually looked into comment from the aquarium society and one way to suppress the etiolation of the stem in this species is to boost CO2 level in the water, but personally I think the morphology you’ve obtained is already gorgeous

Goldfish eat moss clean. So, I assume shubunkin fish would love it too. Though, I can speak only for my guppies to tell you for sure ;)

No. No man-made filters in all my aquariums.
Though, I did used filters and air pumps before 2016. And for about one year I used HOG.5 algae scrubber in my HD aquarium for experiment sake (love it!).

It grows in parks of NYC (that is where I got it), and I've seen it often as a carpet covering flower beds in front of buildings (apparently, you can get it at garden shops).

You may find them in most freshwater ponds and lakes during warm season. Keep them in separate from fish tank, for breeding. From that tank you can add them as needed to your aquarium with fish.

Yes. One can use either fast growing or slow growing land moss depending on the design of aquarium landscape.
I may show in future videos how to make it with fast growing moss. With slower growing moss is straight forward - it would stay as you plant it for all year around (it yet to be seen if it stays like this for longer then 1 year ;)

To separate newborn guppies from parents. Any aquarium with the narrowest side 3 times the fish size would do - including appropriate size bottles or boxes.
To breed guppies in general and to breed a dwarf size strain of guppies in particular.
Those are just a few reasons out of many.

Perl moss is an aquatic moss. I am not sure if perl moss could grow on a land the same way as the sample of moss I picked in the park for this example.
@@4me it can! plagiomnium affine typically grows on land but is often used for aquariums. but i’m not sure if it can grow in NYC.

No. Not every moss that I tried. But, I've been trying about a dozen out of many dozen thousands of land mosses. Also, some land mosses live underwater but seems not reproducing/ growing...There are much more left to explore ;)

I used land moss from my back yard and after 2 days of keeping the moss in water it gave the worst smell ever
Bad smell is the first sign of spoiled samples. You still can wash it thoroughly again under running water and give it another try.

Moss will die in water if you don't clean it thoroughly.
He was no where near rough. Besides that you can literally put moss in a blender and it will regrow.

Not exactly thriving. I would leave those temperate zone mosses in the wild ( you shouldn't collect wild plants,and I think you know that) where they can grow there best.

If everybody took wild plants- they would go extinct. At the very least,that nice cold climate Sellagina will take a decade or more to grow back to that size on that park rock. If it ever does. Plenty of cheap tropical mosses at the fish stores,and nothing depleted from the wild . Hopefully.
Next time..collect from your yard,or moss on your home or apartment complex...just not the wilds.
