If you're a new player, or just want a handy reference to the background of the Elite Dangerous universe, these videos will lay out the history of Elite Dangerous itself. This time: How Elite Dangerous came back from the brink.
Drew Wagar is an official author for Elite Dangerous, having written many missions, lore entries, in-game narrative and two official books - Reclamation and Premonition. Find out more from his website - www.drewwagar.com
I've sunk just about 2000 hours into ED over 10 years. The vast majority between 2016-2019, with a short stint around the time Fleet carriers dropped. I've returned this year, due to the hubbub surrounding it, and I've been having a great old time.
I even bought new peripherals specifically to play more E:D, so I'm stuck in for the long haul. And I gotta say, for once since 2019, the future is looking pretty good.
Thank you Drew for these videos, even though I was present for a lot of this, it's nice to be reminded why I fell in love with the game so long ago. I should probably buy a few of your books.
Coming back to this game after a few years, SCO is honestly so underrated, despite being quite highly rated.
It decreases the time sink in practically every aspect of the game, honestly that alone could have saved the game for me if it had caught my attention when it released.
By underrated and highly rated you mean highly rated?
@y_ffordd I mean, it's highly rated, but I think it's even better still. It's probably the best addition this game ever got imo.
I haven't played the game since maybe Horizons came out? Or longer? I can't remember. I backed the kickstarter and played at launch, then I guess Steam release? Its been a very long time. Ironically, it was your old let's play videos on Elite 2 that I stumbled on. UA-cam randomly recommended it to me. I watched a few and thought, that would be fun to play, but knowing myself better at this age, I knew I'd enjoy watching you play and explain it more.
BUT, it planted a thought: What if I fired up Elite: Dangerous instead? I haven't touched it in forever. That might be interesting. And here I am. Absolutely addicted to the game for the past two weeks. From my vague memory, it *seems* theres so much more stuff to do and QoL improvements vs when it came out. And I was actually able to make some initial money quickly enough to start buying and trying other ships. And then I went on my first real "exploration" trip, about 1,000ly out from Sol, farther than I had ever been, in hopes of discovering new stuff, seeing how the exobiology system works, and bringing back a bunch of money. Success! About 4 days out in the darkness, I came back with about 800 mil and found a bunch of uncharted planets and 1 star.
Anyway, I'm rambling. I would love to see them flesh this game out, or may a new one (carrying over all the data) to take advantage of modern hardware features and hopefully, seamlessly stream in planets and terrain etc without all the hitchy jump phases. I also decided to buy some ARX, mostly because I wanted to support the game, and just a couple paint jobs, but I wish it wasn't for cosmetics. I feel like I'm sending the wrong msg buying cosmetics (although its not the end of the world), I wish I could vote with my dollar towards features and content. I would love for them to add a tier or two of ship between the largest and fleet carriers. Something for personal use, that could dock like 1 medium or small ship, have storage, and jump around. But without all the station features of the Carriers or the crazy upkeep cost. Sure, use Tritium to power it maybe? But much smaller amount. Maybe it charges via solar energy instead so it has to sit for a time to recharge. I dunno.
Of course it was the best year ever. I joined that year!
Meanwhile No Mans Sky has just had another huge update, Worlds 2.
It's great to see you covering Game Play and not just story in the Elite Universe again! My channel has been covering Rebel Galaxy Outlaw. I've been making Light-hearted Jokes about political organizations in RGO's Dodge Sector of Space. At least a couple of those jokes have included "God Save The King". There may be Monarchies in that game. Humorously, I must ask can an American say "God Save The King"? I happen to be American. Nobody's perfect!
I am glad it's not pay to win.
I own the Python Mk2, the Type 8 and the Mandalay, but i still find myself doing missions in my old Python Mk1.
It's such a versatile, strong, can do anything ship.
Love these Mr. Wagar Keep it coming!
THE METALORE!!! I like that.. top vid 👌
Hi Drew. Did you take your latest live stream down from UA-cam? Or am I going mad. I'm sure I'd started watching it but decided to wait for Saturday morning to watch it.
Cheers, have a good weekend 07
2024 was a good year, yes.
But 2025 is going to be a better one, and probably the best ever... why? Distant Worlds 3 !!
Its a great time for returning players, and for new ones too who never experienced the previous two events!
I like the youtube handle. Nice bit of lore there. :)
Best year ever? Not really, but best year since Horizons? Probably yes. But that wasn't too hard considering barely anything was done between Horizons and Odyssey. And Odyssey's botched released really placed our expectations at a record low.
Crash and burn Mav! nice summary of the year, new ships and the powerplay2 nerf ;)
Disagree with the complaints regarding monetization, everything they've done so far is industry standard. Monetization before was a joke.
I agree with you. With no money coming in, there was little incentive for them to add content.
In last week's investor presentation, they specifically mentioned Elite and said if players are happy to spend some of their money on new ships, the company will invest it in new ED content.
I've seen many, many new players saying they bought 'half a dozen' prebuilt ships when they started out. Compared to other games, ED is dirt cheap (and ridiculously cheap on sale), and the way they're raising funds is perfect.
I'm still hoping they release one ship with an interior, for about 50-100k ARX. I have zero interest myself, but imagine what they could use all that money for.
I'm fine with monetization as long as I get something in return. When I purchased Horizons I receive a load of content to enjoy, it was more than worth it. But since then absolutely nothing was added to the game, that I would enjoy anyways. Even Odyssey I'm still waiting for it to be worth the money I paid for that expansion, since I couldn't care less about on foot content. SCO drives and the new ships are a good start for sure, and am curious to see how colonization will work. But as for PP 2.0 so far is as uninteresting as it was before, just received a new skin.
Its still a great game, but theres a lot of other great games. I finally got the oddessy for Christmas but still haven't played it yet, I'll get there in time.
One thing I hope is FDev reverts to old planet generation system - even if that means rerolling whole galaxy. It's OK - I bet playerbase would welcome this change. Not that new system was even popular in the first place. There are no planets loved by the community - and many left the game because of Odyssey system. So if it's possible to revert to old system - and somehow blend it with new colonisation feature - FDev shouldn't hesitate and just do it, becuse when the colonisation kicks in - changing it will affect players' systems, so if there's good time to do it - it's NOW.
I doubt it's possible given that the old system couldn't generate the fidelity necessary for on foot activities. :(
@@drewwagar it doesn't really matter imo - textures on terrain can remain as they are now, same with rocks etc. - it's about drawing the landscape (canyons, mountains, plains etc.).
