This is still by far the greatest heavyweight boxing match in history (if not the greatest boxing match of all-time). At the end of the fight, Muhammad Ali even went as far as describing Joe Frazier as "the greatest fighter of all-time...next to me."

After hearing about this fight for so long and then finally watching it in full, I can honestly say this is the best fight I've ever seen, even better than Hagler vs. Hearns. Here are two of the greatest warriors to ever live, fighting with everything they possessed until all that was left was sheer will. Arguably the last of the greatest performances of Ali's and Frazier's careers.
Also, when Ali said at the end he wanted to retire...it really makes you think what could have been if he'd left the game sooner. Maybe he would have been healthier for longer, maybe he'd still be here. Rest in peace champions.

You think this fight was something , you have got to see the first fight. What's amazing about the second fight and this fight was that both men were still alive , let alone still boxing after the first fight. In Ali/Frazier I, both men were rushed to the hospital in an ambulance after the fight. What a funny sight of Frazier being carried on a stretcher to the ambulance, and Frazier was smiling and so happy that he won even though his face was swollen. I was lucky enough to see this classic fight "live" via closed-circuit TV at the Spectrum in Philadelphia! There was no cable tv or pay-per-view back then. You had to buy a ticket and go to someplace that was carrying the fight. The Spectrum held 20,000 people and was sold out! When Frazier did not come out for the 15th round, the shouts of "Ali....Ali" erupted from the majority of the crowd and continued all the way out to the parking lot!!! Great moment!!!

Any Heavyweight would’ve got knocked out cold by Fraziers heavy left hooks but Ali took it like a champ and fought him the whole way… That’s why he’s the greatest not just him in the ring or outside of it… it’s how much he was willing to take to the head and still keep fighting. He never wanted anyone to feel bad for him even when he got old. That’s why he’s my favorite sports athlete in history. He’ll take you to another level you don’t wanna go and keep going cause he’s a CHAMP. The greatest. RIP MUHAMMAD ALI AND JOE FRAZIER ✌️❤️

I always wondered how much the blows he "willingly" took to his body slowed him down. Ali seemed to be amongst the few that gauged wearing the opponent out with direct access to his own mid section. I never heard him describe how well that tradeoff worked for him behind his bravado. He made everyone look like a fool. He entertained millions and befuddled opponents with this calculation. But how much did it help or cost him in a 15 round fight with heavy hitters? I'm guessing that it's one more reason that he truly is the greatest.

This was a fight between two super giants. Ali the maestro and Frazier with a heart of a lion. Ali had to pull out all the tricks in his bags to conquer a train that kept coming at him relentlessly. He had it all by the end, but Frazier could have changed the outcome with one last frantic blow. Ali knew this, and even in the end when everything was going for him, Ali did not leave room for this by not getting too close to Frazier.
I have watched this fight five times, but am fascinated by it each time. The three fights between Ali and Frazier will go down in boxing history as perhaps the best that we could ever see. After the fight, Ali said it was the closest he had ever come towards death.

What isn't talked about often enough is that Muhammad Ali might have had the best chin of any heavyweight ever. Of course, enduring all that punishment is what caused all this health issues later in life. But when he was in the ring, he could take a punch like no fighter before or since. Those three fights with Frazier would have literally killed anyone else.

In rounds 1 & 2 Ali sat down on his punches and got Joe's respect and slowed him down, then he coasted with medium punches until rounds 13 & 14 where he sat down on his punches again throwing hard crisp punches. Ali knew how to conserve his energy for when it matters.

I think it was the right thing for Fraziers handlers not to allow him to answer the bell for the 15th. They both were spent and Frazier was not going to knock Ali out, even with a lucky punch. Frazier didn’t have the energy and Ali’s chin had no equal, and I think that was in Frazier’s handlers mind in making the decision not to let him continue. The fight was over and they knew it.
