  • Malory School, Downham, Kent.
L/S of a school building from the outside. Students are browsing around. C/U shot of a school plaque, blue shield with a sword and a little ribbon with writing on (too small to read). Cut to L/S of crowded school yard. There is a fountain in the school yard. This is one of the new comprehensive schools, Malory School in Downham, Kent. School is new and fully equipped. There is a machine room, kitchen for domestic science class, 36 new typewriters - all that students need.
M/S of the machine room. Several students are seen working on machines under supervision of a teacher. Cut to a commerce class. Teacher is explaining correct typing technique while students (all girls) are sitting in front of their typewriters, listening. C/U of girl's face as she listens. C/U of hands on typewriter.
M/S of the girls sewing - dressmaking class. Camera pans to show several girls at work. One girl is ironing(!?) and two girls are cutting fabric. Cut to L/S of two girls pinning dress onto third girl (she is standing on a chair or a little table). C/U shot of several items made by the girls.
High angle C/U shot of a hand decorating a cake. C/U shot of the girl decorating cake. Cut to a medium shot of the other girl cooking. M/S of the girl getting a tray out of the oven. Tray is filled with grilled bacon and sausages. Girl puts the tray on table and makes up a plate which no school nowadays would promote - greasy fry-up! Bacon, sausages, chops (not sure pork or lamb), mushrooms and tomatoes!!! As all unhealthy stuff it looks delicious! Several shots of four adults, a headmaster and three women, tasting the food made by students. Traditional roles for boys and girls - good for illustrating institutional sexism?
Note: Some of the people featured in film are Michael Moore, Alan Potts, Joan Dowling, Sheila Marsh, Rita Ekins, Joan Smith, Pat Pinkersol, Marjorie Willimott, Key Pamphlett.

I wish my high school would've had sewing classes. That is a wonderful art to learn! A lost art!!

I went to this school between 1971 to 1976. It really was a great school. Sadly it closed back in September 2005. A new school (Haberdashers Aske's Knights Academy)has since been rebuilt on the site and opened in Easter 2007. Good to see this old footage... I had great memories at my old school.

My High School is literally still like this minus the dress making and cooking. I went to an all boys High School ( 2004-2014 ) and we had typing classes, engineering classes and drafting classes which focused on civil, mechanical and electrical engineering. What we drew and planned during our drafting classes are then applied to our shop classes where we turn them into actual projects like bottle openers, folding chairs and blinking lights. I remember my final project was turning my planned house floor plan into an actual model full with working lights.

Oh wow, it's really interesting to see what activities and classes students had to do in the 1950s

There were such lessons in the USSR. The girls had home economics, the boys had carpentry and plumbing. In high school there were educational and production workshops.

That’s my dad at 0:25 turning around to look at his school mate!
Obviously they had different health and safety standards back in 1959!

Now that's what you called Education, not that Education where you just sit in a chair for whole day listening to subject that doesn't affect our lives
