    I still use these things in the way they were designed and made, but have SO many that are damaged or falling apart. This is a great idea to put those back in service. I was so pleased to find a video that is honoring the maker and upcycling in a creative and useful way. Thank you! One last thought...these are truly art pieces and you could actually frame them. They would be like doilie collages. Beautiful :)

      This was my intention, we have a large family and only a limited amount of pieces, so I put a piece in each block and then all the girls can have a part of Grandmother, or Aunts, to pass on in something useful.

      Thank you! I come from a large family, and thought it would be nice for each of us to have a little piece of our grandmother's work. Much more likely I think to be handed down, than a set of doilies that one person has. It's really good fun to see what you can make with them.

    This may seem like a dum question, but what is the difference between overlock and serging? I am glad I found you, these are beautiful and love the detail of attaching. Love them. TFS

    • @sewsmartwithelizabeth286
      @sewsmartwithelizabeth286  Рік тому +1

      Thank you for your inquiry.
      Serge is an American terminology and over-locking is used in most other countries. They mean the same thing. Serge/over-lock machines often cut the seam edge, which is useful, but, over-locking can be done on your domestic machine. There is an over-locking foot you can buy for this. I use the domestic machine, as I find it quite sufficient.
      Hope this helps you,
      Happy sewing!

    What size did you make your bed runner? I have a king size bed

    • @sewsmartwithelizabeth286

      I measured the width of my bed and added 36" on - you can make it as deep as you choose. I just worked with the amount of doilies I had at the time.
      Sorry I didn't pick up your question before, it slipped past me!

    Can you tell us why you did hand stitching as well as machine?

    • @sewsmartwithelizabeth286
      @sewsmartwithelizabeth286  Рік тому +2

      Hi Kristin,
      I did the hand stitching in addition to the machine work, as sometimes the edges of the crochet, if they are very old, can be worn a little. when you machine over them they can gather up. so on a few of them I just hand sew to secure and preserve them.
      Regards, Elizabeth

      No, all are just washed and pressed carefully before I used them.
      I like the beige/ecru shades. I do use coloured, embroidered doilies, but not as often as the cream shades.

Kind regards, Elizabeth
