    The Bleach Bypass dctl expects linear signal as input. Your video and blog setup is wrong. Just to let you know.

      @ColoristFoundry, you mentioned using a 'custom version' of the bleach bypass DCTL, but I'm skeptical. If modifications were made, why not highlight them in the video or blog from the start? Mistakes are a part of learning, but it's important how we address and move forward from them. Not everyone reads UA-cam comments, and stating you used a 'custom version' could lead to confusion and incorrect application of the DCTL by viewers. Could you either correct the video section or share the modified DCTL with proper instructions? Acknowledging and learning from mistakes is crucial in color science.

      Genuinely apologise here. I understand how things might be coming off as skeptical, let me make things right. Blog indeed seems quite confusing. Allow me a couple of days to update it (i am sure if time was a luxury i wouldn't have made a mistake in the blog or video). Everyone who downloaded LUTs or dev-tool will receive an update email. I surely want to be respectful to learnings and the community (unlike how it used to be at colorist factory). I am trying my best, but that's no excuse. Again, apologies. - Jai

      Thanks. We buy the right to the audio via music bed. For longest time UA-cam displayed the tracks underneath for us, but they’ve stopped doing that since there is no copyright obligation from their end anymore (via something between Musicbed and UA-cam).
      But regardless, Good Advice, let me update music credits in all the videos and maybe will try to include the artist and music in video itself by the end screen from new videos:)

    They did not record to Vision3 film, that's camera negative, they recorded to intermediate 2254. The final grade was made before film out, the intermediate stock has a gamma of 1.0, so it can transfer the graded input gamma 1:1 along the straight line portion of the H&D curve. Vision3 has a much higher granularity than 2254, the only significant impact to the film out process is decreased spatial fidelity.

    • @creed3500
      @creed3500 9 місяців тому +12

      Correct, although iso is closer to 2. The closest grade that I've seen that emulates Dune's process is the power grade from film laboratory on gumroad although it doesn't work very well for indoor shots. It's the only one that uses a 2254 emulation with bleach bypass in the right order.

  • @christoffer886
    @christoffer886 9 місяців тому +32

    The reason people shouldn't match their grade to another film is that it's another film and the look should be your own. Replicating a look is perfect for learning the craft and processes, but whenever I see people trying to copy a grade for a real project, especially if it's a professional one, I just think they're hacks trying to ride the wave of more brilliant artists. Just like when True Detective came out and everyone at marketing agencies started copying the style of that show's intro. A grade should be what's fitting to the project or a look that has been fine tuned by an artist to be their own voice in visual storytelling. Otherwise people will just end up being bland knockoffs while believing themselves to be professional masters.

    • @DaddyRaiden
      @DaddyRaiden 9 місяців тому +2

      I think it's okay to copy a look, as long as it is then matched to whatever you're portaying in your film. Obviously different color grading fits different base material and vice versa. Taking inspiration from genius artists is morally justyfied, since it is heavily implied by the very nature of teaching and learning, so there shouldn't intrinsically be a problem there. The problem arises, when somebody tries to legitimise a work of their own, when in reality it's starkly influenced by other (probably greater) works and no credit is given. On the other hand, I think it's also okay to copy looks and so on, for the sake of learning the craft, not for distributive or profit-oriented purposes. Also, speaking from personal experience, sometimes it's just extremely fun and rewarding, to recreate something, just for the sake of doing it on your own; programming and various other things are good examples for this...considering, that many changes will be made, in order to suit a vision that sometimes could only be formed BY the process of copying, that's alright, I guess. But I'm just babbling away, I reckon.

      @@DaddyRaiden 100% agree with you. I honestly found this video really interesting and it would be an absolute shame if it was such a taboo to attempt to copy and learn from another film that people stopped trying. While I fully understand the moral and ethical standpoint of copying someones work, I believe examples like this video should not be under such harsh scruetiny as it is because, i believe, this is purely from a educative and entertainment purpose.

    Unfortunately the script for generating the split-tone-ramp doesn't seem to work on every kind of grade. I wanted to try out this method on a different movie (Asteroid city) but it seems like the script doesn't find the darkest and brightest pixels correctly.

    • @ColoristFoundry
      @ColoristFoundry  9 місяців тому +2

      I think Astroid city is a bit complex for the script. You would typically need something that does a deeper analysis of highs and shadows..
      For this script it’s better if we try shots that are in mono tones. All the shots I uploaded were cropped (no black bars) and were following similar tonality

Seems totally pointless to me. Secret to the dune look? pop a beige solid over the footage in color mode then bring back the blue of the eyes. It's a boring ass look anyway. These movies look like those old Obsession perfume commercials. I don't see why people are freaking out so much about them. The cinematography is 'pretty' for a quarter of the movie and then it just gets boring due to it's muted palette and constant wide shots. Empty and hollow like some high end fashion magazine. Or maybe some ultra modern brutalist mansion filled with lots of minimalist art, trinkets and furniture you can't touch. I hope this doesn't become a trend in Hollywood. Not like they're producing much else of interest, but I really don't need any more of Villeneuve's sterile style. Just my view.
