Surfers at Point Mugu Rock (a year ago)

At time 1:19 you can see a man floating in the water with a big camera at the bottom of the screen. There were people with cameras all along the shore as well and other drones in the air too.
It's amazing how many times I've seen that rocky outcropping on TV commercials, especially car ads. It's sort of a fabled little surf break that never (or rarely) gets really good.
Used to catch that spot a few years back with no one around, it wasn't really surfed that much, but its a rare bird and if its showing everywhere else is too.
It's not really Pt. Mugu, It's called Mugu rock, locals call the spot Murphy's. Mugu is in the distance, and is part of the Naval base, there's a couple good spots there, but that's a different story and the Navy guards it jealously. No pass-no luck. Murphy's is usually pretty marginal, at best, but once every few years when the sand and swell direction is just right its a fantastic thick barrel from the outside. Good luck catching it though, as it also tends to blow out under it's optimal conditions, and it grinds uncomfortably close to those rocks. Losing a board is pretty much a write-off for that board, and just getting out of the water on a bigger day is super dicey.
But if you're lucky, it's a really great slab type sand barrel. Oh, and there's a fanatic local crew that will drop everything if its good, and they have it dialed. Good luck getting a wave from them, the prime takeoff zone is the size of a phone booth.
If that place is breaking, everywhere else is much better ..
I have no idea. My drone video isn't that great TBH. Here's a sample of what I got with my pocket zoom camera. It was a pretty good show as surfer watching goes. Half the surf community never knew where this place was , even in pictures off the rocks in the background. Now they do.
It’s shame such a great wave gets ruined
Not really….. only breaks 1-2 a year and most those waves were close out 2 sec rides

Either, or. However I did work on point mugu as a civil servant and mugu rock or point mugu rock is not on the naval base.
Man has the surf scene in SoCal gotten desperate. Looks like you'd be more likely to break your back on a rock than get a good solid ride. I've seen it much better but in those days didn't seem worth the risk. Good documentary though. Thanks.

It’s called Magu rock. Most folks refer to the naval base as the proper point magu

All this vid, and all these guys confirm is, this is not a surf spot. About 3 minutes up the road is a much better option for these conditions.
That spot was probably over crowded. I got a base sticker though ;)
driven by that place so many times in 80s and 90s....surfed it couple of times and really its pointless, when this seems like a viable option you know the surf we get generally sucks or is way too crowded.....

I'm no surfer and my drone video here doesn't have a lot of good rides. I was there looking for whales offshore a friend told me about. Something interfered with drone signal so I gave up quick on that. I did see some pretty good surfing though (from my non-surfer perspective). Ususally you have to wait for ppl to catch a wave, but that day it was quite entertaining as waves were being caught one after the next. I did post a short clip I took from my pocket zoom camera too.
