Is Rincon the Most SURF Friendly Wave in California?

- Rincon is still the Queen even though her minions are growing.
I headed to Rincon on Wednesday January 25th to catch a a fun head high swell. Every time I go I am amazed on how nearly perfect her waves break. The crowd definitely kills the "fun" mood though.
Thanks for watching! I'm Brad Jacobson and I'll sea ya on the sand.
I used to hang out at Rincon with my Father. He would park there in his motor home and I lived in Ventura. Great times. He is gone now, s o thank you so very much for this video. ❤️
Sweet me in 12 friends of mine from Riverside are packing up the Econo van right now with soft tops and boogie boards. We're going to come dominate
Have you heard of Lunada Bay?
That’s hilarious.
Malibu invites and welcomes you to its shores
I have been seriously entertained with your recent footage keep it coming
Rincon sections alot more than it did in the 50's and 60's. The ocean floor around the point and inside has shifted and changed. When it got big back then, it rivaled Malibu for the 'perfect right'!
You should’ve been here 60 years ago
Jesus Johnny. You've lost all credibility with the malibu comment. Rincon still is and always was better than malibu.
@@Elloguvanah Both waves are great waves when there is size. I prefer Rincon for it's long walls, but Malibu can get pretty freaking good. Unfortunately for both places, crowds.
It was my go to spot in the 80's. I lived right up the road. Fun back then to crowded now.
I surfed Rincon in the mid 60s. Coming from south you could just pull a U on the highway and park right next to the rocks, climb down and paddle out. No leashes. I broke a board on the rocks. No huge crowds. No wetsuits. Those days are long gone.
The Indicator and RIvermouth were my favorites, never as crowded and the cove.
I moved to Carp when I got kicked outta home in SD. Mostly a 'tar pits' guy but used to get down often enough. Was really fun at 3ft or so on my tiny twin fin. I remember watching a young grom absolutely wrecking the left at indicator(?) He turned out to be a world champ.
Tom Curren
Its been close to 18 years i have surfed Rincon. to crowded. but most spots in ca are crowded now. Was a great place to grow up and surf in the 80's Would ride my bike every day after school to surf rincon.
It isn't crowded north of SF
Thanks Brad!We appreciate Your Work!
your videos make me appreciate my right coastline
You captured the highs and lows of Rincon on this B minus surf quality day. The long rides there are definitely a treat, unlike most waves along the SC coast. That crowd scene is ridiculous, taking much of the fun out of surfing there. I remember a day there long ago. Sunny, warm, incredibly glassy waves averaging maybe 4', so definitely small by the expectations of most serious surfers. But the waves were as smooth as butter, and the water was so clear that I often could not see the trough--just transparent water through which I saw the rocky bottom rolling by underneath me. It was beautiful, but strange trying to orient myself on the face of a wave that clear. And as I recall, almost no one out that day. But as I said, that was long ago. There's a certain reef break north of there that was my favorite spot, and I had similar days there many times--glassy, shoulder-high or so, only three or four surfers in the water on a perfect day. I guess those days are in the past.
Slo County has some reefs that you can score empty... sooo empty in fact, you'd almost wish someone would paddle out to join you
@@Elloguvanah That's farther north than what I meant, and I don't know anything about surf breaks in the SLO county.
Nice new vehicle, Brad !! I'm looking at the Highlander ($$$$). Tough decision. Thanks for the visit to The Queen :)
The triple drop in’s look really friendly and lots of fun😂😂😂
Great stuff brad, the traffic nose adds to the beauty
I love your videos brah. Cali has some amazing waves. Stoked to see and thanks for sharing. Aloha from Hawaii! 🤙
No, there is a million people on it everyday no matter the conditions. Not worth the drive, there are just as good spots other places.
Well, Idk about “just as good”, Rincon is a damn good wave when it’s breaking, and absolutely insane when it’s “on”.
But yeah, you won’t find me there, either. For the very same reason you stated. There’s 300+ people out on the epic days and 275 on the crap/blown out and barely breaking days. I can’t for the life of me understand what goes through people’s minds who regularly paddle out there. I mean, I obviously get the allure, it’s a goddamn great wave. But the odds of catching one of those great waves and also avoiding interference by Drop In Darrel or Adult Learner Larry, or both, is like 250/1. And those type of odds are only realistic if you commit to jockeying/buzzing around the lineup like a crackhead in full agro mode. It’s just not worth it to me, but to others it is- and that’s cool, whatever floats your buoy. I’ll be down the way at a still fun but lesser quality wave with less besties out.
Ah man, it’s good to watch these, but I’m still not getting in until it warms up here. I HATE cold water! 😅
Such a good vid. It captures everything I LOVE and HATE about my mythical favorite break. I say mythical because if there were no crowds it would be amazing. But because of how crowded and lack of etiquette ridden it can be at times, brings out the worst in mankind.
Nice🔥I’m using my friends phone. My name is Mark Corey Point Loma San Diego Native❤️Class of 88 PLHS. Anyhoo your video and enthusiasm for The Queen is Awesome!! Definitely a very special spot that has marked my surfing journey at different times in my life. At 19 years old, (53) now my uncle Joe got me into being a commercial sea urchin diver. One time in December I really wanted to tackle Rincon on a Glassy Big Day. He said Nope, work first… But we left Oxnard Harbour and went straight to Rincon and my Uncle Joe let me surf as much as I wanted. It was great dropping anchor and surfing Rincon by boat. Plus I was out at 5am and it was Cracking🔥🔥🔥
All the good spots are overcrowded even on mediocre days. Rincon (like Malibu) is insanely frustrating when it's on because you're either dropping in on someone, getting dropped in on or slalom coursing your way through everyone inside.
it's magic when it's big and wrapping around the point.
*Love the new 4runner 🤘🏽 Rincon may very well be Californias best right hand wave*
Thanks! I love it too.
lolsssssss seen better up in santa cruz and more north than that way better
Give me a hard breaking beachie any day over this. Good work ,keep the vids coming😎
It's so damn crowded, lucky to catch a couple waves. 100 people out!!
Brad, yes it takes more gas, it’s a truck. But in the long run you should be happy with your choice of the 4Runner. It’ll take you anywhere with confidence, hold its value more than other vehicles, and you’ll be stylish along the way😺 Congrats on the purchase!
The crowds can be crazy, which is why I always go out at Indicators. This past fall I got to be there for one of the best days ever, with peaking lefts and rights. Shame you missed those lefts.
That old guy with the blue longboard and the helmet is a danger to Rincon. We consistently tell him not to burn people but he gives no fucks lol
I don't give a f*** who you are there's too many people now you have to be cool that's it 1975 is over I'm an old guy but I understand there's a lot more people now where I grew up we wouldn't even let him down on the beach all kinds of bad things that's stupid not cool and not how you should treat people so anybody who still is acting like an idiot sometimes you just got to clean up the beach project they find a better path
@@BigDaddy-hn7oh I totally agree.
There are some places where he'd have to walk home for doing that consistently...
@@walterpeters6858 yeah… we are soft hippies in SB. He wouldn’t last a day in Hawaii.
I like your inclusive style of your videos.
Imagine being able to transport back to the 1940s with todays boards
RC surfer riding the inside peelers!👍
I dated two sisters that lived up at Indicators next to the creek I was living at Mussel Shoals. Later I was to live on Bates road for 7 years. I was the guy riding the Liddle hulls. Circa 71/79
😮
Thanks Brad i miss the Quinn
It is if you tell the crowd to leave... 😆
I've gotten held down and dragged around the point on big days, it can be a beast if you go down in the pocket.
Nice 4runner!
I’ve spent hours out there without getting one wave, then when I finally do get one I get smoked by some as$hat
Yup- it takes a special, patient mind that’s able to handle and compartmentalize the non-stop drop ins and overall hectic quagmire that is Rincon, at any size or quality.
I do not posses such a mind. I really wish I did though. Because I’d LOVE to be one of the 300+ people who willingly paddle out there when it’s firing and be all positive about it. Like having fun and whatnot. Instead, I’m walking down to the sand already picturing being a human buoy for 3hrs and/or getting dropped in on by adult learners and people who lack a clue all morning.
I need to work on being more positive I guess.
They call him the Taylor Steele of the Southbay/Socal
That you brad
Is there still tar and stuff?
Can't wait to sponge it...
Haha no Laers allowed to surf this weekend!
Can bodyboarders surf Rincon?
Trestles is pretty easy going wave
better ride it in all the way cuz you aint catchin another one.
Try and F250 talk about a gas guzzler the last time I surfed there I'll never forget I think I used to break a lot better what a ride was there 10 people in the water a long time ago I want to say when they were planting or shortly thereafter words avocados across the street up-top so it was a number of years ago am I that bloody old
Why'd you get 4WD? Do you really ever offroad?
Crowds and long periods of no surf drove me away from surfing.
If you like it now, you should have seen it in the60’s
Snake Valley, almost as bad as Malibu.
I live in Hawaii we just had the Eddie I call it Waimea this video I'm sorry it's not doing much for me but thank you anyway good luck bro I'm on speaker and it doesn't do much for Hawaiian words sorry about that
one of those guys looks like my cousin dan....
It is SURF friendly until the size hits about 6 feet. After that its brutal
5:48 smh lol
Does anyone just surf the inside? Is it rideable just on the inside?
so many kooks so little waves
Just down the street at Ventura point double overhead pumping 😂
The crowds make this wave trash just like Malibu
Lunada Bay is ALWAYS firing, and with nobody out too! 🤫
Even that little inside section at C is more fun than this madness.
This thing is not easy to surf as it looks
Only place I’ve ever been punched on a wave was there. Perhaps it was well deserved.
If it was in 93 or 94 I'm sorry
Love our school beaches forget Huntington beach Newport is better
Jajaja ah no. Malibu can be kinder.
I miss seeing longboarders cruising on the nose!...is that a bygone era thing , or what?
It's all about stomping the wave to death with aires. Flow left with Curren.
@@WhiteNacho isn't it a pity
NOOOOO.... IT IS NOT FRIENDLY!!!
Crowds of clowns... Clouds or crowns???
If you live south of Oxnard or north of Santa Maria you shouldn’t be able to surf Rincon
Why would you post this. Stay in LA
I came down from santa cruz was not that impressed at all we have way better up here and way better shredders....nor -cal
first world crisis, meanwhile service members all over the world eat at times... shitty food... horrible living conditions, and you live with options to live a great life.
Smooth...
lol how’s them cali gas prices treating y’all
How are those Midwest waves?
Honestly not that bad with wage adjustments. Would rather pay $5.00 more total at the pump and live on the CA coast.
y’all buggin lol
@@Surfingsucksnow Wage adjustments don't even come close to compensating for the cost of living here.
You need to make at least $100k a year to live comfortably here. IF you are single . If you live close to the water $2500+ a month for a studio apt.
If you live inland a ways maybe $1800 for a 1 bedroom.
But, then you use twice as much gas driving to the beach.
You gotta really want to live here. I know a lot of surfers that live in their van nowadays.
