  • Early spring on the trout lake has a special vibe of new life, expectations and hope for the coming season. After the spring turn-over of the water column, trout can be anywhere again.
But as soon as the spring sun warms the shallows, the food chain kick-starts in the protected environment in the reeds along the shoreline.
For a short while… that narrow line between land and open water can be a bit crowded, and trout, perch and other predators cruise close to shore. Follow us under water and see litterally thousands of sticklebacks swim - and act like one organism.
We love watching wildlife films from National Geographic, BBC and others, but we also feel a rush of joy and amazement every time we put an underwater camera down in local streams and rivers.
Hope you enjoy it as well.
    Thanks for watching :0)

Hi Michael, nice footage and narrative. Not that we visualize the same as feeding fish, but I really keyed in on the big eyes and red throats of the baitfish. Excellent! Steve

Thank you, Steve. I am also a firm beleiver in eyes and gill/throat markings on flyes, jigs and other lures. Cheers, Michael 🙂

Well that was worth waking up for. Brilliant cinematography with audio backing gives the whole subject an air of professionlism mixed with a generous amount of reality. Give yourselves 5 gold stars for subject research and delivery.

Wow! Michael, Ulla, you two do so many things and do them very, very well. This video's level of professionalism rivals those big time producers that you mention and I also love to watch. I see that close to shore activity quite frequently while fishing Oneida Lake in May for walleye as schools of Emerald Shiners, what we locally call "buckeyes", follow the rocky shoreline. Their bodies glisten holographic as they turn in the current then disappear only to show their eyes and lateral line of their semi transparent white bellies. Awesome video guys, thank you!

Thanks Joe. I guess that time of year present more or less the same scenario anywhere in the world. Just different kind of prey and predators. Those Emerald Shiners looks cool, I had to google them to find out. Looks a lot like smelt and other slender baitfish. Cheers, Michael 🙂
