Green Frog Popper - Pike bass popper fly tying tutorial

- Full tying tutorial and surface action footage! For warm days and nights and surface feeding predators. Bass, pike and even large trout love frogs and other amphibians. This imitation makes a lot of noise and wiggle those long legs. It sure will call up most predators. I’ve used the premade Double Barrel heads on this version, but you can make the heads yourself using foam from flip flop sandals, sleeping pads or whatever you have at hand. I’ve used cork on many of these as well.
Tied in smaller sizes they are fabulous for perch and smaller trout as well.
Happy tying… and thanks for watching
Ulla and Michael

That's absolutely tremendous Michael fantastic looking popper stunning work my friend have a great weekend you and ulla thank-you.Derek
Thank you Derek. Cheers, Michael 😀
Very nice!
Thanks a lot. Cheers, Michael :0)
Nice tie Micheal, just wondering .Are you fishing these with a wire trace or Flouro ? Gearing up for my yukon trip in June . Defiantly tie up some of these .
Thanks Doug. I use 0.60 mm hard mono (nylon) leader for the fly rod. Never really liked wire (and the added weight) for fly fishing - but use it on the spinning- and baitcasting rod. Woah, a Yukon trip sounds great. Cheers, Michael 🙂
thank you so much , i would like to start fly fishing and interested to tie flies ,, would you please recommend good fly rod for me since i know nothing about fly fishing :(
Thanks Shoja. Sorry I missed your comment in the first place. If it is your first fly rod, I recommend you choose a 9 ft. 6 or 7 weight rod. That will enable you to fish dry flies, wet flies and even large streamers. But it is hard to give precise advice, when I don't know your home waters and the fish you will be chasing. For the best advice you should go to your local fly shop or fishing tackle shop, and let a experienced local dealer guide you to the best tackle.
Hope this was useful my friend. Cheers, Michael 🙂
Thank you so much 😊
That's a big one in St. Patrick green no less. What weight line and leader do you use for that? They're fun to make and fish. I've cut them from a foam block that pops on the gunnel of a canoe to car top it. I used a metal cigar tube to cut it, then shaped with scissor and razor. I've made smaller ones with smaller diameter tubes or just plain cork. Deer hair is fun to use, and yes I've a stack of old flip flops too. My favorite top water lure goes to the spin fishing camp, an Arbogast Jitterbug. Sometimes I could get them to tip forward and "jitter" on just the metal cup, looked like those "Jesus" Lizards running on water. There's a tier that makes a lot of those old bass lures I think out of deer hair for the fly rod. I think it was in Fly Tyer quite a while ago. Thanks Michael, Ulla, and all those fish that eat our creations!
Thanks Joe. The St. Patrick approved colors are a coincidence. Didn't think about that, before I saw your comment. But cool non the less. Might enjoy a glass of the Jameson St. Patrics Day special whisky I got from a good friend long ago - and send a thought to the good Irish saint.
Yeah it's a lot of fun making poppers. And the Jitterbug is one cool surface lure, as is the Heddon Crazy Crawler.
Another crossover lure/fly is Larry Tullis Wiggle Bug. I tied a lot of those decades ago. Might need to revisit :0)
Cheers, Michael 😀
@@MichaelJensensAngling Sounds apropos for today I haven't had Jameson, but my mom won a bottle of Old Bushmills Irish whiskey in a bowling tournament. I was of age so she gave it to me. My parents were Scotch drinkers, namely J&B. I favored Dewars, a sweeter taste than J&B. When I tasted the Bushmills it had the same smooth "sweet" finish as the Dewers. I rarely drink the hard stuff anymore, I do have a bottle of Jack Daniels, I use to cook with. So we'll have corned beef and cabbage tonight. Hopefully with some Guinness or a black & tan. On the 19th I'll be celebrating St Joseph's Day. 🤓👍Amazing, you know about Larry Tullis! I have his Nymphs book. Never tried to tie the Wiggle Bug. Its like those "banana" lures, Lazy Ike, Flat Fish, etc. Ever fish a Canadian Wiggler lure? I had a walleye follow one all the way to shore and put it's chin on a rock as I lifted the lure out! No lie! Have a good one buddy!
@@joeduca8582 Hey Joe! Yeah like the Ikes, flatfish and the Canadian Wigglers for trolled slow and deep walleye (great for Lake Trout as well). All productive lures! Cheers!
@@MichaelJensensAngling Mike, a big black Crazy Crawler is my favorite lure for fishing bass at night... nothing like a violent strike (and a shower of water) right beside the boat to make sure that you are awake!
@@hankvana2149 Hey Hank! How's it going? Yeah Canadian Wiggler, what a find that was. A plain Jane lure, but boy what a wiggle. I was thinking of you, Mr Spoonplug ;o) as I wrote about those lures. Happy St. Pat's. Cheers!
Thanks Michael, you could dress up that popper head by sharpie or spray paint, the bare head looks er....bare.
Haha. You are right about that, Anablak. There are so many options to make the head more interesting. Guess I'm just a bit lazy. But... great tip. Thanks. Cheers, Michael :0)
Michael, poppers are fun! Thank heaven for crazy glue for tying them though. I still have some of those "Z "bent hooks needed to prevent the cork bodies from spinning on the shank ...guess I'm dating myself again LOL!
I was tying up some of those "Triangle Bug" poppers (I prefer size 10 long shank hooks) for panfish the other day. ( ua-cam.com/video/rjDYj-CDh3Y/v-deo.html ) You got me going, think I'll go tie up some larger green ones for bass.
TTYL, and HI to Ulla!
Thanks Hank. I got some of those hook myself ;0) That Triangle Bug is super simple and pretty cool.
Cheers, Michael (and Ulla) :0)
Going to get smashed! #ComeOnSpring!
Thanks Adam. I sure hope it is... and that we have a camera running, when it does :0) Cheers, buddy :0)
