Tebaldi's voice was always so beautiful! Even Callas had said she wished that her own voice was as beautiful as Tebaldi's. BUT, Callas had EVERYTHING ELSE! There was so much more to Callas than just a beautiful voice! Beautiful voices are not difficult to come by. But when you add in Callas's impeccable musicianship, her charisma and magnetism, her ability to control and adapt her voice to match what was happening dramatically and musically with each phrase, her unmatched sense of drama, etc, then it stands to reason that in this or any other comparison with Tebaldi (or any other singer for that matter), Callas by far excels.

Opera begins and ends with Maria Callas for me. Different strokes for different folks. Maria Callas was not only a great singer, but look at her stature, attitude, inflection and determination as this "TIGRESS" jousts with the Orchestra and Audience alike. Her stage presence was second to none. None only was she a singer, but she was a great actress of the Opera. No one will ever be able to challenge her....NO ONE!!!
lionofusa1 Just today I discovered a version of Habanera by Conthita Supervia (JUST today !!! And I am over 30!). I have no words to even discribe it. The passion, the way she "belches out" 'Guard yourself", I am speechless. Love Callas as well of course and Conthita's version may not be for everyone, but I sure am a fan. I hope you listen to it if just to hear the passion.
Interesting comparison. In my opinion, Tebaldi starts way too timidly, almost like singing oratorio. But then that chest voice at 5:31 is chef's kiss! And she kinda continues singing with that energy, but eventually it's like it reverts back to the more "stylised" singing. Also the fact it is in Italian, and I barely make out the words, yet Callas' version which is in french (arguably more difficult to pronounce and for me, more difficult to make out the words), sounds as clear as day. Callas is dramatic, yet feisty and playful. So many colours throughout her interpretation. Tebaldi's singing is generally "equalised", but I don't think it's the correct stylistic choice for Carmen.
Very interesting. I must say that I liked Tebaldi's much more than I thought I would. It's clear also that she has a wonderfully solid and smoky middle/lower voice. I just wish she didn't flat or lose tonal quality every time she went up for a high note! Callas's chest voice is legendary, and here it serves her magnificently. In terms of characterization, well, Callas sings in French and Tebaldi in Italian. Both have their magnetic qualities.
You don't take into account this is late Tebaldi. The part she would have sung in her youthful prime is Micaela. As to the language, T. always said her technique was so much connected to Italian that she could not sing in other languages.
Tebaldi’s voice has a sharpness that slightly clashes with the orchestra whereas Callas has more depth and works better at giving a fuller, richer tone like a dark bell.
I have been in this discussion for a lifetime I chose the ice princess . I heard both at the OLD MET with it's incredible sound ringing back at you. TEBALDI ( not in this role) or Girl of the Golden West ( The hugely underrated Dorothy Kirsten wins my heart) but otherwise Puccini or Verdi = Tebaldi
Ciao Marisa.
Neither singer was the definitive Carmen, but Callas was infinitely better than Tebaldi. Callas had emotion, fire, and sang from her heart. Tebaldi is too reserved and nearly emotionless.
Callas screamed, spread, wobbled all the time. I heard her Live constantly on WQXR's Live at the Met. I love her anyhow. Such an actress! And so intelligent. But de los Angeles & Berganza were the best Carmen(s).
How right you are! Beautifully said! There is no comparison. To paraphrase the great soprano Geraldine Farrar..."When comparing singers, there is one you must put off to the side and then you may begin"...that is Maria Callas.
Callas more often sings like she really is the character & really means it....which makes her great, at times.... Tebaldi, for me, a greater overall singer.
Personally Renata has a heavier tone and thats what I love about it also if you put headphones on and listen to the chorus and orchestration on her version its magnificent I love the Italian lyrics as well Callas has a lighter tone and carries it wonderfully however I like the Habaneras with chorus more than the ones with just the orchestra the chorus adds to the drama and the suspense of the song especially during the belts but when there is a chorus you can't fully hear the voice of the singer (pick your poison) both are great but I love Renatas more than I do Callas. A lot of modern opera singers can't belt louder than the chorus during this song (These two demonstrate how this song is supposed to be sung) they need proper breath support to push from there diaphragm, control over there vibrato and to In my opinion (crescendo slowly and carefully) and a passion to really knock it out of the park. Tebaldi did not sing this in French and that was a loss. Her voice is different, softer, also less appropriate for this role, a defiant and bold woman. But, for example in Madame Butterfly things are reversed, Renata is the one there. Basically, each one has a voice profile that is better suited for different pieces and it is a loss for anyone that compares them and opts for either one.
This is an odd thing to say, especially on this video, since Callas most definitely did not even perform this role on stage; I'm not sure if Tebaldi did or not. But in any case this deification of singers from the recent past in order to disparage contemporary ones is just bizarre, and not really respectful of art in my opinion.
