- Archive recording from 1959: The "Primadonna assoluta" performs together with the then NDR Symphony Orchestra (today: NDR Elbphilharmonie Orchestra) in the Laeiszhalle. Also on the concert programme: Vincenzo Bellini's "Oh! S'io potessi" from the opera "Il pirata". Nicola Rescigno conducts.

There is nobody else that could take all that intro with just the orchestra and give you a masterclass in acting, no singing, like she did. It is just out of this world.
This presentation is one of the beautiful performances I have ever seen and heard. Maria Callas is perfect. See how she tells us the character's story without uttering a musical note and when she starts singing she transports us to the most perfect drama. It's an iconic performance! No one can do this better than her.😃

Das Vorspiel ist freilich sehr lang. Aber durch die Persönlichkeit der
Sängerin lässt sich das auch überbrücken. Dann ist man der charis-
matischen Diva hilflos ausgeliefert und in der Kritik machtlos,
es ist einfach hinreißend! 🤍
