Thank you so much for this special podcast.
To be honest, due to propaganda against Aurat March on social media and mainstream media every year, I couldn't understand exactly what the Aurat March stands for.
I understood it today. You should invite them all time and again for such discussions because jitna zada ye baatein discuss hongi utna hi people will know the realistic side of women's struggles in our country.
All of them raised quite reasonable demands for all marginalized communities.
I just can't imagine how all these communities spend their lives on a day to day basis in this country.
My prayers for all of these communities and admiration for these organisers who have become their voice. ❤️

As an Indian, being brought up among ladies at home ( mother, sisters) I've seen the problem women face in the world.
I owe most of my success to my mother and sisters.
If I had one power, I would have made menopause pain disappear from womens body.

@@yugsavla3872 Hindustan(diverse) is different than Pakistan, you can't merge India as one group on any issue.
South India, Sikkim, Northeast India, Goa, Ladhak cities like Ahemdabad(I've seen mother wid children eating street foods, moving around the cities, celebrating alone, even after midnight) etc are more women friendly in comparison to North Indian states.
Plus, you can say Pakistan==Punjab(54% of ppn)->every issues r quite similar for majority ppn+throughout the country.
On constitution n paper, India do have equal rights for women on same lvl as western countries(except on marital r@pe), have more safeguards than Pak, like anti domestic violence laws, equal inheritance law(only for Hindus, Indian muslims follow sharia under AIMPL), but on ground you can say North India is just Lil bit better than Pak, like you can see women driving 2 wheelers, car, going to pubs, clubs, see em wear Western clothes like jeans, skirts etc.. which I haven't seen in Pak(In vlogs, other videos) even in big cities like Lahore, Karachi...

I’m 25 minutes into this video and the only valid point I’ve heard is about domestic workers. Rest has been such a shallow conversation that it’s disappointing. If Aurat March is truly for right of women and real issues faced by them then the organisers have to do a much better job of communicating it to the masses. If the organiser is still going on about apna khana khud garam karo aur mein tou aise bethongi then they are doomed. Dowry, sexual harrassment, acid attacks, marital rape, lack of economic opportunities and forced marriages are some of real issues faced by a large number of women yet, Aurat March has failed to communicate that to the masses.

An excellent discussion, thank you to the panellists for sharing their views, and to Shehzad for organising it, even though it wasn’t for free 😉
I live in the UK but have a special place in my heart for Aurat March and its organisers and supporters who have invested so much into this movement consistently for the last few years whilst facing so much criticism and hostility from different segments within the society. You are true champions! To be honest I would’ve liked to know more about the two march organisers, like who they are an what they do, unless of course they don’t want to disclose these details.
On the social security bit, I tend to agree more with Preh’s argument that instead of a benefit system across all social classes of women, there should be more encouragement on economic mobilisation of women as this will not only benefit them financially but also give them confidence, and of course the personal fulfilment that they are contributing to the society. A benefit system is not only too far-fetched in the current economic situation of the country but also keeps women dependent on the state if not on their husbands/fathers etc. So in my view perhaps a little bit of a shift is needed in the priorities. What I do admire of course is how open they are to have new ideas on board.
Lastly, do we feel that the Aurat March movement needs a leader or a public face, or is it deliberate that it should remain more of a public movement with no leader along with their team?

The female issues r so many so deep rooted n all around that i feel sometime slogans express it more profoundly then anything. Like:
    WOMEN R HUMAN?
ALL Human Beings R Entitled to Fundamental Rights.
    WOMEN TOO HAVE RIGHT TO:
    CHOOSE
    DECIDE
    EXPRESS
    GO OUT

Well great podcast shahzad we want more like these on Aurat march and feminism not only in once a year where there is more echo than words, it will be great if they talk more about the social issues and practical solution for that and pointing to all those baseless arguments (Khaana khud garam krlo, mera Jism meri marzi) like these things I don't think so will add value to it but rather more divides between those who really want to know more but can't go further because of these comments.
    2. I love there socio economics points, especially the one organizer made like for all weather govt or establishment they should be questionable because these are the same things which the movements like PTM, jibran nasir, Muzammil shah and people like you raised and it will help women also as they are specifically demanding these rights for women because no movement get successful without the involvement of women into that so kudos to them.
    3. It will be much better if they give more islamic touch to thoughts like these because there is nothing they asked about which is against Islam but the way they portray or just giving a general remarks may shift women or a non/less critical person towards more radical approach to the social life of married men or women.

Completely agree with Preh memon, she's clear about what she wants out of the movement and also agree that demand for equal work opportunities, empowerment, financial mobility, are more effective and valid demands. I doubt I have ever seen social security really help anyone in getting on their feet.

    • @prehmemon
      @prehmemon Рік тому

I have a very strong belief in economic mobility being the solution to the empowerment problem and am generally averse to protectionism and subsidies. If asked personally, I would very seriously prioritise the former over the latter, and only allow the latter as a short-term measure for immediate relief. But yes I'm not a big fan of social security - perhaps only till the extent of access to quality healthcare and education since those are essential human-development items that are prerequisites for a productive workforce.
However, I understand where the organisers are coming from. And I think the most important part of this conversation is that we can disagree with respect.

    • @tauseefshaukat6257
      @tauseefshaukat6257 Рік тому +2

@@prehmemon Agreed in that respect. Availability of a wide range of opportunities for learning and earning should be ideal.
However, it's a tall order without any real political power. I mean it's Pakistan frankly. Atleast, people are having this conversation right now. The challenge isn't just earmarking a budget for health care and education, but an effective allocation of resources under the right heads, and rationalization. No offense, but that kind of a coherent approach with clearly stated goals seems to be missing at the moment. It's understandable though, since the movement is still in a sort of revival phase. Even in management sciences more than 10 KPIs can be too cumbersome to manage at a time.
Protectitionist measures are usually insufficient to be any kind of alternative for income. Unless you're an advanced economy.
It's refreshing to see the scope of a diverse range of opinions and inclusivity though. Which I might add makes it even better than the western counterparts of the feminist movement. Keep it up.

    Such a relevant subject folks!
If you don't address from where it comes, this discussion becomes irrelevant.... isn't it??
Unless you address the fact that the male in Pakistan has a different set of rules for women since it is written in the quran how do you expect the majority of the male to acknowledge this so much relevant concern.
Without women involvement no country could become complete in any type of growth or progress.
Women are the SHAKTI symbol and the actual kinetic energy that creates( which is why they are the real instrument of creation for humanity as well)
Unless you first address- education, burqa, talaq, freedom of expression and other rules that are given in your religious book - there is not much hope
Yet it is very very important to have such marches probably almost every month to keep it more and more relevant and address the seriousness of this subject.
My solidarity to the women of Pakistan and would have loved to join this march to add my number to give the eye ball of t this making it one huge number march.
This should have the entire Pakistani women on the street to show the seriousness of the entire population of women to be on the street.
Unless you have a huge number of the lower strata of women in this march you are going nowhere...- sorry to say that ladies.
In fact you should have brought one of your maid servant and other lower strata women to this podcast to get the actual reflection of concern for this subject
All the best to the women in Pakistan... our heart goes out to all of you. 💕

Just adding a reference here. At 55:50, the comment about female economic employment boosting Pakistan’s GDP by 9%-23% is contingent on Pakistan closing the female employment gap relative to Low Middle Income Countries. Unfortunately, it sounded like a mere random conversation involving the guests speaking on random topics without an anchor, devoid of a balanced discourse that help provide some spine to the issue at hand. The host should have at least challenged some of the points coming in from the guests but it rather seemed like a banner to promote.

you can correct me if i am wrong , but a country where newly self made doctors and engineers who don't have a strong background and sifarish are working low income jobs like in the range of 40-50k , how can they pay 25k to their domestic worker ? even iska half kr lo , wo b nai kia ja skta , jaise inki discussion pe kuch bol do to ye khti hain females kay issues ka males ko kia pata , waise hi elites ko a kay middle aur lower class logon kay masail discuss krny ka b koi haq nai hai
that sums up the whole aurat march , it's been hijacked by bunch of elites just like the politicial parties and every other sector in this country.

Great idea to bring the organizers on the podcast. However, the communication strategy is so weak. The language they are using is only understandable to people who are already on board. They should have a few key talking points that we the listeners could use to disseminate the message further.
The style was defensive. They could have used an approach to educate people. The poverty angle is not unique to women, it’s a larger socio-economic issue.
They should have presented some key statistics to make their points. They could also have shared some key accomplishments since the March began.
I am a feminist and a supporter but the panel gave evidence that sounded anecdotal!
Shahzad tried but you girls did not make good use of the platform and the opportunity. Be better prepared next time please so you can slap any counter arguments with solid evidence.
You have great plans but explain how you are going to bring about these changes? Are you working on policy development? Are you raising awareness? Get a professional communication professional to help you out if you don’t have that expertise yourself.
    A disappointed supporter! 😞

With respect, I'm not sure I agree with the comment about the style being defensive nor do I agree with the approach being non-educational. The podcast was titled "What are the demands of the Aurat March?" Many of the demands were clearly laid out - giving domestic staff 'worker' status, liveable wages for everyone, universal social security, and ending the thaikedaari system. And beyond that, they talked about evidence such as changes to essential legislation (such as the abolition of the 2 finger test, the Domestic Violence bill, and the Workplace Harassment Bill), economic mobility of the middle class and the potential boosting of GDP, ending gender-based violence and various other subjects. To be clear, statistics are used to support arguments - statistics are not the actual argument. So as far as the topic of the podcast goes, my personal view is that the key demands were clearly articulated. You can choose to agree or disagree with the demands but they were discussed in detail.
As for poverty being a larger socio-economic issue, sure. It is. But poverty is not equal - credible institutions such as McKinsey, Brookings and WEF (to name a few) have put out literature that confirms and explains how macroeconomic shocks have a seriously gendered impact and disproportionately disadvantage women and other marginalised groups systemically. Sharing some topics below which might make for good reading.
"COVID-19 and gender equality: Countering the regressive effects" - McKinsey
"Why has COVID-19 been especially harmful for working women?" - Brookings
"This is why women are bearing the brunt of the cost of living crisis, according to research" - World Economic Forum
"The Economic Crisis: The Impact on Women" - OECD USAID
"Inflation affects women more than men. Civil society can help" - World Economic Forum

@@prehmemon Thank you for taking the time to read and respond. When doing activism on something like women rights in a country like Pakistan, you need to be more succinct. Every opportunity you get to speak about it should help you get more allies. More people who listen to you should go away with a few points.
I am not saying you don’t have a worthy cause, I am saying you all did not do a good job of articulating it in a succinct manner. For example, when asked what are the accomplishments, the panel scrambled to come up with an answer. You came to the rescue after the tech glitch and provided some context.
My criticism was not on the March but how you missed the opportunity to articulate its purpose clearly, what you are doing about it, what is the end goal, what do you want the audience to do?
The way you listed the points in the reply should have been your talking points for the podcast. This is how you should have listed that we are fighting for 1,2,3. Our biggest problems are 1,2, and 3. This is how you can help us by doing the following. That’s it.
Towards the end, one of the panelists talked about the community work you all do. That should have been highlighted way early in the conversation.
Also when you came to the podcast, you should have given robust arguments for the common criticisms hurled at the women March.
Statistics are not an end in itself but they are powerful and extremely important in advocacy work. Your accomplishments should (no matter how small) should be on your fingertips). The girl who said she is 40 did mention some of the legislation passed in the past.
So the panel did answer some questions in a haphazard way but it could have been more structured and made better.
Criticism is not fun but please review mine and know it’s coming from a good place and from an ally. I hope you will be better prepared next time as people like me rely on you for knowledge and arguments.

@@kalsum77 I appreciate where you're coming from but to me it seems like at least part of your queries are linked to the format i.e. a conversational podcast. Typically, TPE podcasts are completely unscripted and it's kept that way to keep the conversation flowing freely. The only talking points that are relevant here are the demands of the Aurat March which came up one after the other in the discussion as it progressed. But Shehzad's podcasts have never been scripted one-on-one interviews so it's a little difficult to factor that criticism in. Not all questions are addressed by all talking formats.
The other part is the subject. Not all conversations about Aurat March are intended to address all criticisms about the Aurat March either. The subject of this particular podcast was "What are the demands of the Aurat March?" So long as that part was covered, any other conversation on ancillaries is just value addition in my view.
Having said that, I do think there is merit in your feedback being addressed in some other formats such as FAQ-type documents, published literature about successes, etc. Thank you for engaging!

I think Aurat March people should work on the availability of resources from Govt. side like they want to cut their spending where exactly and how much.
Where are the opportunities to work, across all the industry and where the population is? I am sorry to say
The problem they are talking about is common across men and women things can only improve if govt are efficient and objective in their short and long term objectives. Last thing this non binary term is absurd and absurdity has no limits.

Totally waste of time. Which of us has not seen placards in aurat march Lahore? How vulgar slogans can support a noble cause? Why majority of women want to keep themselves at distance from this organisation?
And when I feel threatened for the moral and ethical education of my kids in this LGBT+ based crisis (I have 100% respect for people who are born with defect) then why I should not oppose the vulgarity at display in my society by any organisation? We all know the fate of Qum-Lut.

the main question is, are their fancy words in this podcast resonate with what they do on streets in the guise of aurat march? no, its not... aurat march is a festival of privileged women where they come and spew venom on opposite gender, if you ask them about the problems of a common women, i am 100% sure that not even 10% would have answers... this is the main issue, if you are really serious about women rights, then fix aurat march and its toxicity... i am not against feminism, but i am in a war again toxic femininity....
PS, tum logon ko jeans pehenna hai ya kuch bhi nahi pehenna hai is ka mardon se kia talluq hai? ye to religion aur society decide karti hai... spain mai shalwar qameez pehen k ghoom k dikhao... jail hojaegi, log terroris samjhengy.. wahan ka culture alaga hai, isi tarha yahan nang pana karo gy to log aadi nahi hain.. wo awaz uthaengy... ya to declare karo tum logon ka na Islam se koi lena dena hai na yahan ki society se taky sab ko pata lagy fancy words k peechy ki kahani kia hai.... maqsad sirf women rights nahi hai...
