Floyd Patterson is one of my idols not just as a boxer but as a man. He was a humble modest gentleman who cared about people and he was so logical and cerebral of his views of the world

Mr Patterson visited my Uncle’s gym, the Main Street Gym, in California while training for the Jerry Quarry fight. He taught him some tricks with the peekaboo stance (60% weight on the front, 40% back). You’re on your heel on your front and your toe on your back. This will line the hips up. Notice when you take a step when you walk in your everyday life, you take a step with your front foot and your front heel hits the ground. Also, you leave the ground on the toes of your back foot for the next step.

Floyd was one of the most God blessed people to ever walk our earth. I only met him once but as I learned more about him as a person , I only wish I could be half the man he was and that I knew him much more. In the 1980's a co-worker who was a friend of Tracy Patterson told me about Floyd's barn/boxing gym and how open he was to letting anyone work out there. As hard it was to believe and because I couldn't afford anything at that time, I decided to check it out one Sunday morning at about 0700 hoping no one would be around to ask questions. Well, no one was around for about 15 minutes. Then , Floyd shows up. OMG! WTF!
This incredible man simply asks me why I was there and if I wanted to learn about boxing. After shaking like a martini and telling him yes sir, all I can remember is him in front of me, in the same boxing stance that he assumed against all of his opponents, giving me instructions on how to box. Unique feelings may come over you when you are positioned against a world heavyweight boxing champion in his fighting stance. Not so with Floyd. Calm, collected, patient, helpful, caring ........this man was remarkable!!

Training at Floyd’s gym was an amazing time for me from 1975 to 1982! Awesome memories. The video at the end of this documentary is of Floyd and I sparring. This had to be about 1976. I was 18 years old. Having the opportunity to spar with Floyd 3 or 4 times a week was an amazing opportunity for me! So many memories from that time! I hitch hiked 25 miles there and 25 miles back to Ellenville the first three years 5 to 7 days a week to get to the gym from Ellenville. So many crazy things happened trying to get to the gym during those years.

My maternal grandfather worked with Floyd’s younger brother Ray who lives in Torslanda outside of Gothenburg and was a truck driver at Volvo. He also attended the fight between Ingemar Johansson and Eddie Machen at Ullevi. I’ve also sent a letter to Ray praising him, Floyd and Ingemar for their accomplishments in boxing.

Floyd Patterson was my boyhood hero! I watched many of his fights that was televised locally. Remember, this was in the 1950's and 60's and sports broadcasting was in its infancy. I remember marveling at Floyd's hand speed and punch combination during his second fight with Tommy Hurricane Jackson. He was a fighting champion and despite his greatness, his humility endeared him to many. A quiet man, a great man, and he wore the Heavyweight Crown with much, much dignity. I have an autographed photo of him that resides at my home He stood at the very top of Heavyweight Champs in character qualities category and not one of the long list of Heavyweight Champions in the history of boxing was his better. Rest in peace Floyd, and thank you for your presence in boxing. Many, many fans of yours mourn your passing

unfortunately .... Floyd was borne with a GLASS JAW , and that berayed him many times like with with Johanson For a heavyweight he was on the small size .
For many years as champion he he dodged top contenders while fighting such LUMINARIES AS Roy Harris of Cut & Shoot texas , an unranked amateur which brought on a lot of criticism from the boxing world . Cus Damato hid him from real contenders as Zora Foley and ..... Sonny Liston !
Ali actually liked Floyd , and allowed Floyd to Call Him CLAY ... when he NEVER ALLOWED ANYONE ELSE TO call him Clay . Ali did say Floyd was the most skilled boxer he fought ... that says something . I wish Floyd would have gotten that third Liston fight to right his record . Floyds fight with George Chavalo was probably his best fight as far as showing how skilled he really was .
A class act is the final description that leves him so much respect as a huam being . R I P Floyd !
