One of the best scenes in what I consider one of the best movies ever made. Tevye may not have been rich, but He was pretty smooth, using the experience of 25 years with Goldie, He tricks Her into giving His baby girl what She really wanted, Love.

And of course the stunning acting. When we see CGI now I’m sure we know at the back of our minds it’s all done virtually, part of the Magic is lost. Whenever I see this scene I’m still in awe of how it was achieved physically.

For those of you who don't know the whole musical, Tevye promised Tzeitel (oldest daughter) he'd work on Golde so she can marry her tailor love. The obstacle to this is Golde who is set on Tzeitel to marry Lazar Wolf, the rich butcher. Sooo Tevye cooks up the dream to work on Golde's views by having her beloved Grandmother come back from the dead to tell the parents that the tailor is the one--then seals the intent of the 'dream' with the terrorfying Frome Sarah saying she'd come after Tzeitel if she marries Lazar . Tevye is cleverer than Ulysses and Solomon but together--and Golde changes her mind regarding the tailor for a son in law. Shalom!

Omgosh You got it down pat! It was one of the greatest musical on Broadway in Manhattan, NY I was lucky to have a wonderful husband (R.I.P.) that took me to see it in 1976 it has been in my heart ever since!
I of course love this entire play/movie, and like many others this is one of My favorite scenes. But a small detail always makes me sad--the fact that a few of the dead were children. I mean, it's no surprise--to manage to live to adulthood back then was a victory. But it still makes me a little wistful to see them dancing with the other dearly departed.

I was lucky enough to see FotR live a few years ago for Topol's final performance tour, and I can attest that he's just as magnificent live, as he is in the movie! This sequence in particular was even funnier live, as Topol ad-libbed a few gestures before "waking" the show's Golde. It was such a treat!
I would have liked to have had the opportunity to see Topol's last myself but at the time all we had just moved and had just setup my radio to listen to while unpacking and heard that it just happened so I missed out.
Reading some of the wonderful Ruth Madoc's obituaries I was surprised to learn she played Fruma Sarah in the movie. I loved this musical growing up and was terrified of this scary vengeful ghost. Ruth Madoc was very versatile.
I LOVE TEVYE!! He's such a great, simple, peaceful and beautiful (inside) man. God bless!... This movie has became my favorite musical since I watched it!
I like how at 0:37 Tevye is all dramatic and Golde is just looking at him like "God you drama queen." I think this is the best part of the entire musical. :D
maybe because I was also a kid when I first saw this over twenty years ago, but seeing the little kids dancing and all the younger relatives who were dead was always sad to me.
When my high school did this, we had Fruma Sarah sitting on the shoulders of the tallest boy in the choir for the role. She TOWERED over everyone and the way they chased our Tevye around the stage was fantastic.
My favorite part of the whole movie! Completely brilliants on his part, a natural spinner of tales. He was so clever to come up with all that on the spot AND convince his wife. :D Once again, brilliant.
I've been type the same mistake lately-'teh' instead of 'the'. I'm right-handed BUT my right hand is slower than my left when typing(and my right hand mainly uses one finger and my left hand uses all its fingers) Is that weird?

"An eye for an eye, and a tooth for a tooth." "Very good. That way the whole world will be blind and toothless." I love this movie, I'll have to go dig out the vhs :P.

I love how gleeful she looks when she's talking about how she'll kill Tzeitel if she marries Lazar Wolf. Also, I have to give Tevye credit for dreaming that up, no pun intended/
A bit funny that 'rest in peace' is used here since it's a uniquely christian phrase- the phrase used for the dead in jewish tradition is 'may their memory be a blessing'.
People talk about how Fruma Sarah was frightening I was more afraid of these folks at 3:16 Especially the one saying “Who could be mistsken” He scared the L’chaim out of me
Dark elements of this scene: - The director diluted the colors because he wasn't sure if people dream in color - The cousin Rachel died young - The whole event takes place in a graveyard (even the head of the bed looks like a pair of tombstones) - 2:52 Among the dead are a pair of four children (two girls dancing and two boys playing leapfrog) who also have died - Fruma Sara (duh), her jealousy over her husband - somehow wanting him to always remain a widower and keeping her "PEARLS!!" Not to mention is willing to strangle the new bride after 3 weeks - After jumping in the grave, Fruma Sarah and the dead relatives are burying them alive! - Realizing that Tevye's got quite an extraordinary imagination for that whole moment!
Bullshitting skill: Level Tevye
I’m using this with my theater friends from now on
I'm amazed Tevye didn't bullshit his way to ruling Russia by then.
You could also say Tavye was pretty smart in this trick of his since he was smart enough not to incur the wrath of his wife.

Fiddler on the roof
This scene is the stuff nightmares are made of.
Taka Ono 💀👁
Reading some of the wonderful Ruth Madoc's obituaries I was surprised to learn she played Fruma Sarah in the movie. I loved this musical growing up and was terrified of this scary vengeful ghost. Ruth Madoc was very versatile.
This song sticks in my head like chewing gum. xD
agreed
Same!
POGO
I've seen this like 5 times today I got it real bad
I wish, I'm in this musical and I'm grandma Tzietel...I have to have my lines memorized by Monday! It's not sticking to me
Both Grandma Tseitel and Fruma Sarah are gorgeous!!!!!! I love them!
Fruma Sarah's cackling reminds me of Moaning Myrtle.
Paulina Ruiz It wouldn't surprise me if the author of Harry Potter was inspired by Fruma Sarah.
Grandma Tzeitel reminds me of Una O'Connor from Bride of Frankenstein.
The lady playing Fruma Sarah went on to become famous for the line "good morning campers. Hi De HI."
I think they were both inspired by silent movie characters
@@mkaplan1383 You have a good point
I LOVE TEVYE!! He's such a great, simple, peaceful and beautiful (inside) man.
God bless!... This movie has became my favorite musical since I watched it!
I could watch this over and over again, cant believe I actually got to see the stage production with Topol years ago with my Mother. Awesome!
Fruma Sarah watching this from Heaven, just like "well, he ain't wrong.."
Does anyone else burst out in cackling laughs when the chorus of ghosts pop out from behind the Graves to echo Fruma-Sarah's verses? 😂😂😂😂
I like how at 0:37 Tevye is all dramatic and Golde is just looking at him like "God you drama queen." I think this is the best part of the entire musical. :D
My parents had this on vinyl, and when this song came on...I'd have to run out of the room. It was scary!
maybe because I was also a kid when I first saw this over twenty years ago, but seeing the little kids dancing and all the younger relatives who were dead was always sad to me.
In comparison to the live shows, this Fruma Sarah is FANTASTIC! I wish they'd have this version for use for community/high school musicals!
Cccvvvvb
When my high school did this, we had Fruma Sarah sitting on the shoulders of the tallest boy in the choir for the role. She TOWERED over everyone and the way they chased our Tevye around the stage was fantastic.
My favorite part of the whole movie! Completely brilliants on his part, a natural spinner of tales. He was so clever to come up with all that on the spot AND convince his wife. :D Once again, brilliant.
I saw this more than a dozen times when it came out. After the 7th time, the theater manager let me in for free.
The characters look terrifying, but for some reason I find this scene very funny. For example: PEARLLSSSSSS!
This is probably one of the funniest scenes in the movie. Anyone agree? :)
I'm gonna be Fruma Sarah in my school production of Fiddler on teh Roof!!
Cool. Best of luck.
It's LeviOsa, not LevioSA! I am also a HP fan, and I am Hodel.
AWESOME!!!!!!!!!! It's a fun role, so enjoy every second of it!!!!!!!! :D
I hope you had fun! My friend played Fruma Sarah and I played Grandmother Tzeitel in my school's production ^_^
I've been type the same mistake lately-'teh' instead of 'the'. I'm right-handed BUT my right hand is slower than my left when typing(and my right hand mainly uses one finger and my left hand uses all its fingers) Is that weird?
This has long been one of my favorite parts of the movie.
One of my favorite movies scenes. Brilliantly executed. I played Fruma Sarah in our elementary school play as a kid. Had a blast! Beautiful memories 💖
gotta love tevye...such a riot
Wow, Fruma Sarah reminds me of Helena Bonham Carter! 😄
LOL!
If they remake this movie she'd be Fruma Sara or Yenta.
I sure hope Helena plays fruma sarah. She'd be perfect
I was thinking Carol Kane for Fruma Sarah
Nancy O'Malley Grandma Tzeitel almost behaves like Kane's character from Taxi Rivka
❤❤ im still watching this 2023 :) cant wait to show my two kids this movie
Lived a long life Tevye, rich on earth and no doubt now in heaven.
I could always see him going to the cemetery the next day with flowers apologizing for using them in his deception. But it was for his children who were in love .
OMG this scene gave me nightmares when I was a kid, and still freaks me. "Pearls! Pearls! PEARLS!"
Every time us kids acted out, my mother would threaten to call out the wrath of Grandma Shaney, and I always imagined it looking like this.
For a woman who's dead 30 years, she looked very good
lol
I love how the chorus keeps popping up from behind the gravestones
I love the guy who says "who could be mistaken" it is so creepy. He had one line in this movie and he nailed it!
"An eye for an eye, and a tooth for a tooth."
"Very good. That way the whole world will be blind and toothless." I love this movie, I'll have to go dig out the vhs :P.
OMG I play the villager who says the "eye for an eye" line in my theater's production!
Fiddler on the roof
MY UT-MOST FAVORITE MOVIE OF MY UT-,MOST LIFE SPAN!!! AND.. I was able to see TOPOL in O Town!!! I am still SO STOKED !!! I am a Catholic/Lutheran . Yet I grew up LOVING the character Tavia.. I Adore and Live my Life by this AMAZING Movie!!!
I love how gleeful she looks when she's talking about how she'll kill Tzeitel if she marries Lazar Wolf. Also, I have to give Tevye credit for dreaming that up, no pun intended/
Tevye is such a great dad.
A bit funny that 'rest in peace' is used here since it's a uniquely christian phrase- the phrase used for the dead in jewish tradition is 'may their memory be a blessing'.
I first saw this on the tv when I was a kid and was scared witless!
People talk about how Fruma Sarah was frightening
I was more afraid of these folks at 3:16
Especially the one saying “Who could be mistsken”
He scared the L’chaim out of me
Dark elements of this scene:
- The director diluted the colors because he wasn't sure if people dream in color
- The cousin Rachel died young
- The whole event takes place in a graveyard (even the head of the bed looks like a pair of tombstones)
- 2:52 Among the dead are a pair of four children (two girls dancing and two boys playing leapfrog) who also have died
- Fruma Sara (duh), her jealousy over her husband - somehow wanting him to always remain a widower and keeping her "PEARLS!!" Not to mention is willing to strangle the new bride after 3 weeks
- After jumping in the grave, Fruma Sarah and the dead relatives are burying them alive!
- Realizing that Tevye's got quite an extraordinary imagination for that whole moment!
Was the goat a dear departed too?...
1712Overture weird...
+1712Overture awesome line
I see what you did there-One of their 'kids'!
@@1712Overture lol
Looks like the goat that was banished to the wilderness, carrying the people's sins!
I thought, What A Great Dad. He only wanted his daughter's happiness!
