  • As Arden continues his guide through the history of the Avengers comics, today we're going to talk about, what, in his opinion, constitutes their first major misstep. In spite of some cool features, ranging from the origins of Mantis, the arrival of Beast to the Avengers roster, the beginnings of Scarlet Witch and Vision's relationship, and even the then well-regarded Avengers-Defenders Clash, Arden just didn't enjoy this one as much as he would have liked. Even behind the scenes, with amazing artists like the returning Buschemas, the then newly arrived George Pérez, some art from Jim Starlin, and Lein Wein coming over to edit couldn't save this series! Though, there are some fun features, including a story featuring Black Panther we quite enjoyed.

There's something wrong with the 1970s' comics. Maybe the spirit of creation in the 1960s had worn off? It seems a lot harder to create good characters then than in the 1960s. _The Defenders_ started in 1972, and maybe they needed the Avengers help with that cross-over to get off the ground?
I heard there was also a spike in paper prices in the '70s that caused Marvel and DC to cancel several titles that weren't performing well that they'd only recently started.

Better than anything Bendis did with Avengers!

For the core series, agreed. Bendis did some interesting stuff with New Avengers, but i don't know if you even count that

Not sure, but there are lots of great resources online for that. If they're in good condition they could be owrth something.

A few years ago I picked up some comics that I missed from the 1980s that weren't too expensive (i.e. collectible) and some trade paperbacks of Thor. I don't know what the back-issue market is like now that you can read them online. For _The Defenders_ I'd contact my local comic book store before and after _Doctor Strange: Multiverse of Madness_ comes out to see if there's added interest in Doctor Strange. For instance, now might be a good time to unload my _The Amazing Spider-Man_ comics with the popularity of _No Way Home._ Although I've been told that super-hero movies aren't increasing comic book readership.

@@sandal_thong8631 I think comic book movie announcements drive up sales more than anything, like secret wars comics might be worth more now, rather than after the movie releases

@@darthdragoon101 I went to a comic book shop in February and I think they said they only pay 25% of retail price. It might be better to sell on eBay then, to cut out the middle man.

I am having an OK Boomer moment. I started reading comics in 69. Oh man, your vid flashed Mike Ploog's art. Even a a kid I was a Ploog admirer.
    I miss nostalgia.

This one's biggest problem was how grating Mantis was. This one feels her dialogue is like nails on a chalkboard. This one also tired of what a Mary Sue she was and how her supposed martial arts mastery somehow put her on a level with Thor and Iron Man.

I don't know if the media is coming around to healthy relationships between humans and artificial intelligence. Look at Westworld Detroit Becoming Human Battlestar Galactica among others it's less than pleasant.

I think a lot of those shows are much more open to the idea, even in the examples you give. Take BSG or Westworld, where the conflict is largely human driven and reflecting individual choices of AI to make human-like decisions of war and violence. But other AI in both shows readily show love and affection for humans in a way that's not entirely negative - even with genocidal characters like Baltar/Caprica Six. I chose not to include it, but I was going to bring up Ex Machina, even. Yes, that isn't exactly an example of a healthy sort of a relationship, but it was very human.
Also, I'm really just saying I get the sense of this idea being more openly received these days. It's not like the idea of conflict has vanished entirely. The point is, really, that Vision and Wanda, to date, still represent an anomaly, I would just say they were slightly less unique at this point.

I guess you could use star wars and star trek the next generation with data c3po. Then again I thought more about star wars it seems like a lot of the a.i. are more like loyal pets or subservient entities to biological life forms.
