  • Mark Gruenwald loved comics.
He worked at Marvel Comics for 18 years. During that time, he became an editor, mentored dozens of future comic creators, and wrote some of the greatest stories that have ever been made in the medium.

It's interesting to think about how Mark was probably among the first generation of what I'll call, for lack of a better term, post-modern pop culture consumer. Today, while we may engage in varying degrees, we are all largely aware of fandoms and continuity and 'shipping and cosplay and fictional universes and spinoffs and prequels and such.
This wasn't so in the 70s and 80s, and only started emerging in the 90s. I was a kid reading Captain America and Quasar in the early 90s. Mark was parents age, and I can't imagine them or any of the other adults around me engaging with fictional universes the way Mark did.
Other commenters have asked, "what would Mark think of how things are today?" with an implication that he'd be negative or disappointed. No, I don't think so. He'd probably be just like any other fan. Happy about some things, unhappy about other things. But probably content with knowing that these cool little characters have reached the level of cultural penetration that he knew they could achieve!

I was telling my brother the other day, the MCU is gonna need a Gruenwald soon, their starting to lose track of their canon, and that’s incredibly important. Great video as always!

I'm not afraid to say Mark Gruenwald revolutionized comics. Before Watchmen! An unsung hero.

Mark Gruenwald is the one who introduced me to the concept of Omniverse, which inspired me to believe in the Omniverse theory to all of fictional reality and medium.

I've been pushing for a Mark Gruenwald Captain America omnibus release over the last few years and eagerly pre-ordered Vol. 1 coming out this summer.

Try Marvel Epic Collection. They've got like 9 trade paperbacks worth of his 10-year run on Captain America

I've been reading his work on Squadron Supreme and his iconic Captain America story-arc "The Captain" for a few years now, and they are both fun. Squadron Supreme was ahead of Alan Moore's Watchmen by a whole year, and yet it remains an underrated cult classic from other similar works like Kingdom Come, Civil War, and The Boys.

The Boys has fallen pretty quickly from its podium. The show/book comparison made readers look back at how poorly written it was, and how it didn't subvert comic book tropes, it simply insulted them mindlessly. Civil War is another work that has not aged very well because of how hollow it is and because of the mischaracterization of many heroes

Probably my favorite writer, perhaps because Cap was always my favorite, Ish 332 made me hate Mark until Ish 336. At 15, I took that pretty hard LOL, but the build up to 350 was one of the greatest rides in my life...and I've done stuff than read comics, your piece on Mark was great, thank u for letting me remminac😹

Currently at 3:45 into the video. Is that a digital copy of Omniverse I see? There a link anywhere for it? Been keen to read it for years!

@@DIEGhostfish It's amazing how cohesive Marvel was during the 70s-80s. It truly felt like lightning in a bottle, a real SHARED UNIVERSE. Characters would go through arcs that changed them completely from the beginning of their runs and other heroes would pop in and out in other titles because they could - they made sure the readers understood New York was crowded with supes, for example.
Since the 90s it's become the norm for writers to disregard previous stories of the teams/characters they're writing for, and consistency between titles AND inside their own titles is almost non existent. A shame.
