As a huge fan of the first I was so pumped for this. I didn't like it at first and put it down for months but finally came back to it. Actually ended up really growing on me, plus the combat is not bad at all, pretty refined. Taking out the gun combat from the first really helped.
I'm playing through this game now, and played through the original 2008 version, and this review seems a little harsh. I'm loving this game a lot, flaws and all, and think it's worth more than a "decent" all things considered. This version of Frostbite shows its age with shadow maps drawing in all over (made more obvious by the mostly white and glass aesthetic of the city) and at night things in the distance are blurry like there's a depth of field effect showing off the wrong sort of thing, but overall the game is a joy to play. I love the simple plot and the characters are doing a fine job of getting me to care. Has a more relaxed, realistic vibe to the dialogue and overall characterization. It's not a perfect game, but the amount of things to do and how much more fluid and fun the traversal feels while still holding that torch of controlled parkour controls that the first game pioneered makes it absolutely worth it to own. Plus it's nice to be in a setting that isn't dark, depressing and fraught with dread like so many games on my PS4 tend to stick to. The depressing bits are subjective, but the gameplay isn't. Reminds me of chasing agility orbs in the first Crackdown, except in first person and with more nuanced controls.
I feel like just about everyone doesn't understand how the combat of this game is suppose to be done. You're not suppose to engage by simply punching and dodging. You're suppose to continue running around. Running off walls and following through with a kick as he keep going. Jumping and spring off railings and landing down on your targets with all that momentum and weight.
Love finding this channel and these videos. Simply one of the best games journalists brandon! And simply one of the best and most comprehensive reviews. No fluff, crisp detail and impressions, information of the games systems. Keep up the great videos guys!
I take Damiani's review a on case by case basis because of his bias Star Fox review for Wii U. In this one, he makes a lot of good points so I'm inclined to agree with him. When Zelda: Breath of the Wild is released, I want Bloodworth to review it out of all the EZA members because I think he is the most impartial one of the group despite having favorites of his own.
This was really informative. I feel like a more enlightened consumer. Sadly, I've already bought the item you're talking about but I'll be sure to curb my spending habits next time around and take full advantage of the advice your humble channel provides.
@EasyAllies Guys, dont worry about the reviews being a little "late". As word spreads out people will always gather around the Allies for the superior reviews.
5:25 - Hacking billboards was actually one of the better side-tasks to do IMO, as it wasn't about hacking billboards, but finding a way up to the billboards. I'm surprised you didn't talk about the ridiculous times you have to get in the delivery missions (And how you somehow fail them if you arrive just a second too late).
The sense of wonder is stronger than ever with the vast open world and visuals. Yea this setting has been in a lot of movies but not in many games for us to breathe in it. The combat is also very satisfying if you use it as intended, with the environment and momentum in mind. The combat is like the parkour, amazing when you're firing on all cylinders, but both dependent on your skill. I haven't beaten it yet to talk about the story, but so far it's much better than the first game Progressive ad cutscenes and terrible story.
I don't understand why a reboot was nessecary. The story in the first game was good and built up some really cool characters. Especially the blue guy...forget his name. So many more ways to continue the story instead of redoing it. I think that's what hurt it most.
I bet they rebooted because f the artstyle. it's not just a reboot of the story, the whole time it's set in is different. Mirrors Edge 1 had zero scifi tech in it, it was basically set in the present. Catalyst tho is really scifi, the architecture is scifi. the technology like computers, trains and aircrafts are totally scifi too.
The game's story is based on the Mirror's Edge Comic Book, which I guess you can consider a retelling of the Original Mirror's Edge? (I don't actually know, I never read it) I guess the comic did pretty well and dice took that story and used it as a blueprint for catalyst
I played and beat this game. So I was thinking what my score would be to see if easy A and I align. Short answer we do. Thanks for all the hard work love the stuff you all produce!
I have to disagree on this one. The review is missing the point of the game - the flow and freedom of the movement. I was very sceptical going in, but Catalyst stays true to what made the predecessor a cult classic and improves on every single aspect of it. For me it's a very strong contender for game of the year even before games like uncharted 4. I love it, the atmosphere, the freedom, the movement, the immersion, the flow, the style! (1) The core of the game (the parcour gameplay) is better than ever. For example i got in Catalyst a better feeling for the flow and the movement. It was less likely to break the momentum because of a badly timed jump or not perfectly turned corner. Also the new possibilities and the open world greatly added to the sense of freedom and choice where the first game strictly felt linear. (2) Combat: The shooting in Mirrors Edge 1 was horrible and interrupted the flow of the game. The melee combat in Catalyst is now very similar to the movement: It's all about controlling / maintaining the momentum and flow. If you break the momentum, the combat feels equally as awkward and terrible as when you break the momentum during running. But if you stay in the flow during combat its like beeing Neo in the matrix movie. Just amazing! For me a big improvement, because the new combat system supports the strength of the game instead of playing into its weakness. (3) Story and characters: Yeah... the story is equally as forgettable as in the first game, but way better presented. Every storymission is impressive and at times breathtaking presented like the story missions in the first game. But this time the cutscenes between story missions are "real" cutscenes in the style of the game and the world feels thanks to the open world way more cohesive and connected. Most characters remain stereotypes (same as in the first game) but Faith worked better as her own character in Catalyst. (4) Open World: Could have gone horribly wrong, but enhances the gameplay instead. The open world greatly supports the immersion and the feeling of freedom. Yeah... some side tasks are open world nonsense and feel tagged on, but they also never distract (me) to much from the fun or feel forced. They at least provide some variety and diversity when needed or wanted. All in one i felt that the positive effects of the open world greatly outweigh the (possivible) negative effects. Yeah... We didn't need the skill system or some of the collection tasks, but i can ignore them for the most part if i don't like them.
Darn it, I can't believe 2016 have 2 gaming IP sequels with good potential to become massive disappointment. Why did Mirror's Edge Catalyst and Homefront Revolution have to be this disappointing ? I feel like the publishers allow the games to be release, so the gaming community would stop asking for more sequels of them. It wouldn't make sense though, because the publishers have to fund a lot of money for the development of these games.
+Excuritas Well Tomb Raider is already a well and long established franchise compare to the Homefront and Mirror's Edge series. Homefront and Mirror's Edge has only 2 entries compare to Tomb Raider's over 10 entries.
Completely agree with the score you guys gave it. I've been playing it on and off since it launched and I share your sentiments. For a newcomer to the franchise, I feel like this game really has a hard time making the running aspect feel natural and smooth. There is a lot more weight to it and I find it clunky. Maybe I'm the only one who thinks that...
The main thing Call of Dooky has on Dice is their ability to make a decent story. Dice always, especially in Battlelag games has a nothing throw away plot: uninspired, boring, repetitive, wisps of nothing. Love the first Mirrors Edge for its feels and gameplay, not for any endearing characters or fancy plot points. But, I'll wait to get this one.
It's a shame, after all the waiting. The first one felt fresh and unique, really loved that game even with all of it's flaws. Still going to buy this, but when it's on sale hopefully later this year.
They shouldn't have removed the ability to pick up guns. That feeling of being able to get the enemys guns out of their hand and shooting them with their own gum was very satisfying in the first game.
Honestly, I ended up enjoying the game more than I thought I would have. Although, the short time required to 3 star all of the time trials is fucking disgusting. It also makes no sense. "get this product across town in 4 seconds!" If your product has that small a shelf life, what the hell is the recipient going to do with it? I blasted through the main game and had a fun time while the narrative lasted, but there was no reason to stay in Glass after seeing the credits role. This game should have been a much more reasonable $40.
i loved gametrailers and happy that you guys are continuing to do reviews and other gaming stuff. Easy Allies, interesting name. it's already better than the other EA :)
Its true that the controls in the first one were bad and its sad to hear that not much has change in that matter. The best in this games has always been the visuals and the art style. By the way the theme song from Churches is great!!!!!!!1
I'm really not sure whether DICE can actually do great single player games. Bad Company 2 and Mirror's Edge 1 come to mind, but they're not really fantastic campaigns
It is in the beginning just when you get out of jail and are standing on the rooftops for the first time. And it's also the first song on the jukebox at the safe house.
You guys got a Mighty Number 9 review in the works? Interested to hear what your thoughts are. Been seeing a ton of negative reviews but I can't tell if it's become popular and click-baity to just shit all over this game without giving solid reasons for why its bad. Love to hear a more objective review.
As always I like the review due to the effort put into it... But I disagree with a 3/5. I was a huge fan of Mirror's Edge back in 2008, and even when people were giving it lackluster scores I defended it. History has repeated itself by hearing that a "new" game (I.E. when ME one was coming out some people flipped at how cool it was, then it got lackluster scores, fast forward 8 years and the same thing happens) coming out with hype...Then it comes out to 6/10, 3/5... I disagree heartily with that. It was essentially taking the same formula and amping it up. The story *is* predictable, but was the first one golden? Not at all. I actually felt like a story was happening this time, and again I loved the first ME. *breath out* Yeah I sound like a cliché fanboy, but I just feel the, "Meh...." and then move on attitude is a bit rude to the people who made this game considering they looked at their first attempt and wanted to improve. Most gamers don't program or design and yet we have the nerve to scoff at those who are attempting to let us do what we love, game.
yeah :) It's my game of the year so far... Catalyst improves on every single aspect of the original and at the same time stays true to what made the original a cult classic (the flow, the movement, the immersion, the freedom, the artstyle). Even the combat is a big improvement for me because now it supports the strength of the game instead of playing into its weakness. It's all about controlling / maintaining the momentum and flow. If you break the momentum, the combat feels equally as awkward and terrible as when you break the momentum during running. But if you stay in the flow during combat its like beeing Neo in the matrix movie. Catalyst still has minor problems like story or characters, but that was never the point of the game. Same with the open world. Did people expect an "Assassins Creed" clone? I'm amazed how true Catalyst stays to the original, while improving it.
I loved the first ME, I haven't bought Catalyst yet, but I plan to. Story sounds bad, but if the gameplay of running around is as good as part 1, I won't care. ME is a unique game that no one else has recreated, which means MEC is also a unique game. Here's to hoping for an even better part 3!
I've seen a lot of shit talk about the game being a reboot, people claiming that it's to soon to reboot and stuff like that. But how is this any different from any Zelda sequel? Every game is like a reboot with different amount of changes. Sure there is this crazy Zelda timeline stuff but frankly that's kinda like grasping at straws for most players and only relevant and interesting if you are a really hardcore fan.
It seems to soon for a reboot to me because the universe and gameplay isn't developed enough. With Zelda, they established a fantasy world that remains somewhat consistent with reoccurring characters like Zelda, Gorons, Ganon, Zoras, and Bokoblins, and the elements of gameplay like dungeon exploration, puzzles and sidequests. It's still recognizable even though every game is drastically in certain aspects, and as such each game can be different but still draw people in with familiarities. With Mirrors Edge, we had one cult classic with a simplistic and fun world and story and trademark parkour, so it needs more of a sequel to expand upon it and establish itself more. With this, it feels like Dice just went "uhhhh, DO OVER" without much of a reason. They could've expanded upon the world and gameplay with a sequel just fine, but going down the reboot route feels needlessly confusing for both fans and newcomers. I haven't played catalyst, so I can't say too much.
Aidan Perry Yeah the Zelda series does it very well. But I can't really see any reason that Mirrors Edge or any other series too for that matter can't do the same thing with their series. The games universe can still be expanded even when you reboot. You are of course still entitled to think that it's too soon and should just be a plain sequel.
The difference is that every Zelda game is still a sequel, they retread familiar ground but are still telling a new tale, it's something Dark Souls also does. The problem with a reboot is that you're now telling every fan to forget the game they love, this game is the new canon, which can be disappointing for anyone who wanted a sequel. I haven't played Mirror's Edge, maybe both Faith's are connected somehow I wouldn't know, so I'm just speaking in general about reboots.
Tizzy13 But what does it matter when the game are about as connected as AT&T internet? Mirrors Edge 1 and 2 are just as connected as any 2 Zelda games. The only difference is that they slapped the reboot sticker on the front of one. Bloodborne and Dark Souls are more connected than some Zelda games and they aren't even in the same game series.
What a waste, I just CAN NOT understand how can publishers still make this kind of mistakes. ANYBODY who played the first one could have proposed ideas to make a MASTERPIECE. Give this game to modders and we'll get it!
Tony G Because 5 is an odd number, so there is no middle. And whats a 4 start out of 5? Is that like an 8/10 or a 9/10, cuz a 5/5 must mean 10/10, tho some will say that 5/5 just means 9/10 and 10/10. This is why a 0-10 system with .5 increments are better. Cuz If you think San Andreas is 10/10 and Vice City is 9/10 but you think GTA5 is better than Vice but not better than San Andreas, then you can simply place it at 9.5/10
***** so why not 0-10 ? 5 start is basically 0-5 (and lets hope there is half stars). in a 0-10 system 5 would be the middle which would translate to mediocre/fair game, 6 being decent, 7 being good, 8 great, 9 being amazing, 10 is perfect (an instant classic everyone should play). But 0-5 what is the middle? 2? 3? 2.5? and again, what does 4/5 translate to? an 8/10? a 9/10?
man, most of what i'm hearing is "just like the first game, kind of like the first, it's like the first but tweaked, if you played the first..." etc etc. sounds like no reason to buy in to this one. which sucks, because then they won't make more. self fulfilling prophecy and all that.
Purchased the game recently. Am greatly enjoying myself with it, so far. Looks great, too! And I'm playing the Xbox One version, which runs in 720p. Doesn't really bother me, though.
5 stars is more than enough. In a 1-10 rating scale no one gives scores below 5 anyways (professional reviewers, not metacritic trolls). If anything even gets a 5 it's seen as complete garbage. Look how the fanboys lost their mind at Jim Sterling giving BoTW a 7. 5 stars is more than enough to convey how good a game is since it just cuts out the unused 1-5 part of the 1-10pt rating scale.
Can't say I completely agree, but I see where you are coming from. On a side note, zelda botw was definitely a 7.5 stars maybe 8 for the switch version. No game deserves perfect score.
guess i'm talking more about the commenters, on how dice turned into slaves of EA and all that. but yeah, the first game did just a couple things right. the story was bad, the combat awful and the second half wasn't that good (i didn't like the interior environments). it's just that it did a few things REALLY well
So it keeps the flaws of the original, without the charm of being the original? Disappointing; I didn't see why a remake was justified this review seems to reinforce that, why not a new game in the series? A new character? I don't think many people were that attached to the story anyway.
lol... I love your reviews usually guys, but this one seems to miss so many good and bad points to the game and just focus on the middle ground. It presents the game as a mediocre title that will only ever be mediocre, when, personally, I found the game to be much MUCH more polarizing and likely to be amazing to some and absolutely abhorrent to others. Oh well, probably a bit late to have much impact anyway :P
As a huge fan of the first I was so pumped for this. I didn't like it at first and put it down for months but finally came back to it. Actually ended up really growing on me, plus the combat is not bad at all, pretty refined. Taking out the gun combat from the first really helped.

Love finding this channel and these videos. Simply one of the best games journalists brandon! And simply one of the best and most comprehensive reviews. No fluff, crisp detail and impressions, information of the games systems. Keep up the great videos guys!
I'm so glad you guys are back.
You are one of the few companies of which the score aptly matches the review given, great job
I take Damiani's review a on case by case basis because of his bias Star Fox review for Wii U. In this one, he makes a lot of good points so I'm inclined to agree with him.

@EasyAllies Guys, dont worry about the reviews being a little "late". As word spreads out people will always gather around the Allies for the superior reviews.
I love your guys' review style.
I'm so glad you guys decided to stick together after GT lol

I played and beat this game. So I was thinking what my score would be to see if easy A and I align. Short answer we do. Thanks for all the hard work love the stuff you all produce!
Anyone know the name of the song at the very end, when the score is up?
ZeroSilence91 I know im super late, but its the main theme for this game

+Lynch85 Were you typing Doom as it was a disappointment or it was well worth the wait.
Fuss Coopland A pleasant surprise.
Pretty much agree. I still like the game, but the first game had something special that i dont feel in this one.
Where is the theme song grayish
featured? I loved STILL ALIVE
Nice review guys. Pretty much what I expected.
Love you guys...keep up de good work

Music is from ME1.
Thought this would at least get a 7.8. Good review guys keep it up. Better late than never
Nah not enough water
Uhh no mention of the level design being worse and not just being red things you can jump to instead of a "go this way" line?
yeah you can turn that off. there is a classic mode.
How I miss your Reviews, I just found out you guys had a channel.
It's a shame, after all the waiting. The first one felt fresh and unique, really loved that game even with all of it's flaws. Still going to buy this, but when it's on sale hopefully later this year.

worth getting when it goes on super sale a year from now
idk why but I actually really liked this game
I also liked this game.
123doomdoom glad to see im not also, this game is fun and beautiful
lol daimani fell so much well getting footage, you guys should put it in a falling montage
Man I hope they can get a better mic for Jones. His voice deserves better !!!
The lifebars above the enemies' head is really off putting.
I wish this reviews were a bit longer, can't get enough of Jones in the background
Solid review, but I personally enjoyed the combat.
I played through the whole game and never heard that theme song warning call?
It is in the beginning just when you get out of jail and are standing on the rooftops for the first time. And it's also the first song on the jukebox at the safe house.
Brads voice is velvet 😃

Thief the Dark Project still does first person platforming better than most first person platformers. Go figure.
I agree although I'm having quit a bit of,fun with it.
Sooooo 7.8?
too much running
Not enough cookies that need love

Absolutely loved the original - really bummed this reboot looks so disappointing. Will most likely be skipping this :(
This guy sounds like gametrailer guy
Thats because he IS the Gametrailers guy 😉... Easy Allies is created by the old GT staff
so bloodworth voices now...
+Easy Allies anyway congrats on patrion and gl in the future 👍
+Easy Allies With you since day 1 ... Was really sad that GT was shut down ...And then the good news came ..Easy Allies 😊
no the voice over is Brandon Jones. Bloodworth is the one communicating with you in the comments tho.
Wait its a reboot? I thought it was a sequel. Wow, why.
Maybe the first attempt wasn't cliche and boring enough.
You dont know what a reboot is do you?
Tizzy13 But what does it matter when the game are about as connected as AT&T internet? Mirrors Edge 1 and 2 are just as connected as any 2 Zelda games. The only difference is that they slapped the reboot sticker on the front of one. Bloodborne and Dark Souls are more connected than some Zelda games and they aren't even in the same game series.
they were fair but they still tore this game a new one
Going open world is pretty much the worst thing they could have done with Mirror's Edge.
What a waste, I just CAN NOT understand how can publishers still make this kind of mistakes. ANYBODY who played the first one could have proposed ideas to make a MASTERPIECE. Give this game to modders and we'll get it!
Ahhhh Come on EZA... the 5 star rating system is by far the worse rating system.
Should have gone with the 0.5 increment system.
Why is a star rating system the worst?
and again, what does 4/5 translate to? an 8/10? a 9/10?
there are half stars... ratchet & clank got 3.5
+Ricardo Alvarez A 4 out of 5 is a 4 out of 5.
Can we expect a review of Inside?
man, most of what i'm hearing is "just like the first game, kind of like the first, it's like the first but tweaked, if you played the first..." etc etc. sounds like no reason to buy in to this one. which sucks, because then they won't make more. self fulfilling prophecy and all that.
Also you guys should ADVERTISE your COMEBACK !!! Damn I missed this voice!
Purchased the game recently. Am greatly enjoying myself with it, so far. Looks great, too! And I'm playing the Xbox One version, which runs in 720p. Doesn't really bother me, though.
Limiting the scoring to 5 stars doesn't give a clear enough picture. Please up it to 10 stars.
Tbh the government in this game isn't really so bad
so, the flaws of the first one and a big, open world without those cramped levels of the first? and that is somehow bad? ok then
They never said it was bad, they said it was decent
guess i'm talking more about the commenters, on how dice turned into slaves of EA and all that. but yeah, the first game did just a couple things right. the story was bad, the combat awful and the second half wasn't that good (i didn't like the interior environments). it's just that it did a few things REALLY well
To be expected.
Just remember, 7.8 = 10
So sad I didn't like this game ;( I wanted to but it just didn't do it for me...
DECENT / 10
So it keeps the flaws of the original, without the charm of being the original? Disappointing; I didn't see why a remake was justified this review seems to reinforce that, why not a new game in the series? A new character? I don't think many people were that attached to the story anyway.
lol... I love your reviews usually guys, but this one seems to miss so many good and bad points to the game and just focus on the middle ground. It presents the game as a mediocre title that will only ever be mediocre, when, personally, I found the game to be much MUCH more polarizing and likely to be amazing to some and absolutely abhorrent to others. Oh well, probably a bit late to have much impact anyway :P
gametrailers 2.0 !
Great review, D. Gonna pass on this one.
7.8
Looks as shitty as i thought it was going to be.
Could be worse. Could be Zelda.
SCATHING
meh
disappointing :(
