I remember that Sakhir race so well. His performance that day was out of this world and I almost cried when he won. It was like: “This can’t be it. We need to see him do this again.” He’s not Max, Lewis or Fernando. But he is a damn good driver that deserves to be on the grid more than a whole lot of others.

Like he had multiple solid races, wasn’t THAT far off Seb in quali (beat him quite a few times during the title fight, monaco 17 almost was Kimi, and to think if If in 2018 Seb got pole and won in monza instead of Kimi getting the tow and pole. MAN. So while he underperformed more often overall (not to say it was that much worse), he was still reliable, fast, and showed that on his day he could still win. He almost won more in that 2nd Ferrari stint. Bahrain 2015, Hungary 2017, Monaco 2017, Spain 2016, Australia 2018 (first race of the year and he was straight up faster than Seb in qualifying and through stint 1, pressuring Lewis on pole, and Seb won through strategy.) Red bull aren’t going to just straight up forget about Baku 21, France 21, Mexico 21, Turkey 21, Abu Dhabi 21, or plenty other incredible moments of Checo brilliance. Did he have his stupid moments like UK 2021 sprint for example, yeah he has, but bottas spun under the safety car during his SECOND Mercedes race at China 17. Took his first pole in Bahrain (race 3), almost won race 3, did win Russia (race 4). Had some really shaky moments (Turkey 2020 anyone) but also had some killer moments (Austria 2020, Australia 2019)

@@atromics2907He absolutely is and you’re delusional. As much as I love Fernando he has a big ego and does not like being #2. That’s why he left Alpine because they had Ocon and treated him like gods gift to Earth. So not Nando. Lewis? Do I need to say more? Albon had his run, he cracked under pressure now he’s at Williams and doing excellent work as their main driver. Yuki would be my natural pick but Yuki still has some maturing to do. I’m a Yuki fan and he’s the driver I cheer for every weekend and personally I rank him top five in talent if we put all the drivers in a vacuum but the guy has a temper and he would not fit with RB at least not yet. Max would break him. Pierre Gasly maybe but he seems pretty confident at staying with Alpine and has made no remarks of displeasure with his team so that’s a solid maybe but probably no. Lawson is too new, Ric is headed for retirement. Lando embarrassed him at McLaren and Checo’s pace is far far far superior than Ric was in the previous 2 seasons. Checo spins during quali and practice but he delivers when it matters. On Sunday. So he’s more reliable as well. Everyone else has just about signed long term contract extensions so they’re out of reach. There isn’t a single driver that RB can rely on to be their number 2. The fact of the matter is, Checo performs time and time again when it matters despite the hate for the man. RB has no reason to look for a replacement anytime before Checo’s contract expires in 24’.

Honestly I think a major reason people do not like Stroll so much is because of how him having a seat has forced better drivers out of seats. He's forced both Ocon and Perez out of a seat. His presence has almost ruined multiple careers with only a few fairly lucky podiums to show for it.
He's no longer a rookie. He has more experience than Leclerc, Russell, Norris, and Albon. He's made massive mistakes and lost out on two wins. In Monza he got extremely lucky with a red flag and in Sakhir his teammate won despite being in last at the end of the first lap.
Being reminded how good of a season Perez had in 2020 really makes it a bit infuriating that Stroll has pushed these drivers out of a seat.

For me, the low point of Perez's career was when he was at McLaren in 2013. He openly said when he joined the Woking team that he was aiming for the World Title, which at the time, considering McLaren ended 2012 with the fastest car wasn't far fetched at the time. However, Hamilton's departure for Mercedes coincided with McLaren starting their decline that lasted until 2019. Neither Perez nor team mate Jenson Button scored a podium, let alone wins and title contention. Perez seemed to struggle to recalibrate his mindset to this and although generally matching Button on pace, McLaren chose to oust him in favour of Kevin Magnussen for 2014. By the end of 2013, Perez seemed to lack motivation, looking like Gasly, Kvyat or Albon did (in a body language sense) when they were dumped by Red Bull down to Toro Rosso, he mooted the idea of racing in series other than F1. But Force India saved his career, their car, longer term, proved better than McLaren and he rebuilt his confidence. With a podium in race 3 of 2014 in the first night race Bahrain staged, the Checo from 2012 (that had impressed people with his performances on Sundays) was back and possibly stronger from his tough year at McLaren

thank you for this! Mid 2021 I returned to being interested in F1 again (since 1985) and only since late 2022 I was starting to follow, support and search back for more career info regarding the RB11 driver.. considering what happened in 2020 it seems like a re-occuring situation for him ? All I can say, I don't doubt his fighting spirit and determination and I think sofar he has been a brilliant wingman at RB, deserving more credit and less harsh criticism. I do hope whatever the future brings he won't throw in the towel just like that or without good reason and I wish him the very best!

    • @SiVlog1989
      @SiVlog1989 9 місяців тому +3

@SuperPassionflower I may be a bit biased, but I like to think that I became interested in the sport at an interesting time (I started watching the sport in 1996 and including that year, there have been 13, by my calculations, seasons where the title battle, at least mathematically, has gone down to the final race). Indeed, my favourite race I've ever watched unfold live was the 1999 European Grand Prix at Nurburgring. Although the championship battle was finely poised, with the top 4 being separated by just 12 points (10 points for a win at the time), the title battle ended up taking a back seat with the mix of great strategic calls, moments of madness, good and bad luck and mixed weather conditions that culminated in an unusual top 6 by the end of the race. Of the title contenders, Mika Hakkinen (the reigning champion from 1998) came home 5th after a poor race where he seemed to give up in the early stages when he was called in for wet tyres too soon, but put on a spurt towards the end to get 2 crucial points. Next closest was his closest rival, Eddie Irvine, who finished just outside the points in 7th, and the other two contenders, David Coulthard and Heinz Harold Frentzen, both retired. The other points finishers other than Hakkinen were as follows: Johnny Herbert (who despite qualifying 14th came through to take the first and only win for Stewart, which the following year became Jaguar, which in turn became Red Bull in 2005), Jarno Trulli (taking his first and his team's last podium with second), Rubens Barrichello (taking the second Stewart to third), Ralf Schumacher (doing his injured brother proud by fighting towards the front for Williams and only dropping back with a puncture) and Marc Gene (finished 6th for an increasingly rare points finish for Minardi, which in 2006 became Toro Rosso, which in 2020 was renamed Alpha Tauri).
In conclusion, this race was everything I look for in a race, highs (like Johnny Herbert winning from 14th), lows (like Luca Badoer in the second Minardi suffering a heartbreaking gearbox failure while running in a brilliant 4th place) moments of brilliance (like Herbert timing his switch to dry tyres to perfection, contributing to his win) and moments of madness (like Eddie Irvine's first pit stop, when the Ferrari mechanics sat there waiting for the right rear wheel to be brought out of the garage, resulting in a 27 second stationary time in the pit box, costing him the chance of points).
You may have noticed that I did not mention Michael Schumacher. Although he was 5th in the championship at the time on 32 points with 2 wins, his championship battle was brought to an abrupt end with the accident he had at Silverstone (he had a brake failure that pitched his Ferrari nose first into the tyre barrier at Stowe corner at high speed, so fast in fact that his car hit the concrete beyond the tyres, resulting in him suffering a broken leg). Mika Salo was drafted in to sub for the German for the subsequent 6 races and did better that people expected (he should have won the German Grand Prix for example, but Ferrari ordered him to let Irvine through, maximising his championship challenge), achieving 2 podiums in that time, a highlight being standing on the podium in front of the Tifosi at Monza, and Nurburgring proved to be the final time he drove for Ferrari before Schumacher was back in the seat, but that's another story.

Checo talked to Christian Horner in 2022 about how demoralizing it is to see someone get so much more out of the same car than you do.
Much as I want to see him fighting for wins with a top-tier team, as he's my favorite driver, in terms of his mental health and life as a racing driver, I'd honestly love to see him in a situation like Valtteri's.
In the past, he's been brilliant at extracting performance out of midfield cars. He may have had 5 wins with RB, but 2020 was an incredible season for him (and I'm glad he won his first race with his longtime team).
Do I think he belongs at a top-tier team? Yes. Given his history, and the fact that he's had multiple podiums this season and won two races, I'm not ready to write off his talent.
Do I think he'd be happier somewhere other than Red Bull? Absolutely.

That is why i think that Lewis overdone it with the driver comparing claiming even Bottas was better than Checo...Bottas is more consistent in quali, but checo makes up for it in racing with a car that is not his preferred setup. Lewis did get stuck behind Checo in Abu2021...How bad can Checo be? Would love to see Checo as Lewis his team mate in a car that Checo would handle better because of the setup.

Looking back I think we all underestimated just how good that 2020 Racing Point actually was. I mean it was literally a copy of the 2019 Mercedes and probably not to much slower then the Red Bull and a lot easier to drive. Ofcourse you can compare his performances to Stroll, but I also think we all underestimated back then just how bad Stroll was. Especially when you look at his recent form.
So this is not to say he didn't do a great job that year, but it does explain why he has been a bit disappointing in Red Bull. As people just rated him a bit to highly at the end of 2020

Being Maxs team mate is a death sentence. It’s like Schumi at Ferrari the team is built around him and he held all the power. No one is going to look good compared to Max at the moment with the possible exception of GOATs like Hamilton or Alonso but neither will happen obviously.
They may as well keep Checo for the time being. Badly and Albion were devoured by the pressure I don’t see anyone else doing any better.

Yo mean how Checo (so called Legend in Abu Dhabi 2021) destroyed his career by changing to These Guys who simply doesnt support and aprechiate Number 2 drivers or Number 1B. (Ferrari2.0) He was able to win a race in thethird best car a d now after to wins in the first 4 races He has become paralysed. Its the same thing Ferrari did to Barichellofrom 200-2005 and to their reigning World Champion Kimi Raikkonen in 2008, the same thing RedBull did to Webber, the same thing Mercedes did to Bottas, but they didnt do it to Rosberg and He became World Champion.
