I would go as far as to say that in qatar, the McLaren were on pace with the red bulls. Also like you said the McLaren car works even better in short quick fire stints. This also explains why they were fast in the main race, because it was basically 3-4 sprint races stuck together. But this is also where maxes ability and experience comes in to play.

Although some remarks. The 2021 rule change was anticipated to hit the high rake cars. About challenging Max, to beat him in a championship fight, it's not about the other driver winning while Max doesn't. It's about being consistent over a season with maximising every single point. If Max isn't winning, then he is most likely to be second (or at least in the top 3 given the car), Lewis learned that the hard way in Sochi 2021.

@patepulkkinenvtec2403 Luck definitely played a part. Lewis would've got p2 if Lando (and especially Mclaren) used his head and switched to inters on time.
Max started in p20 due to engine penalties and got up to p6/p7 before the rain. He got lucky, but he made the right decisions at the right time that race, which granted him p2 while Lewis won the race. I remembered quite well that the celebrations of Lewis's 100th win weren't exuberant, Max wasn't supposed to end up in p2 starting dead last. This was Lewis's opportunity to create a good gap in the standings, but it didn't pan out that way.

The rules for 2021 were absolutely not targeted at Mercedes. If you're talking about the floorboard rules, they were put in place because Pirelli used the 2019 tires for a 3rd year and after Silverstone, they were worried the cars were getting too fast for them, and they even expected it to hit high rake cars harder, it just happened to be the opposite.
If you mean the DAS, then yes, they made a loophole in adjustable suspension illegal, but they were aware of that one basically before even racing it. And it was banned before 2022 because it was originally banned with the 2022 cars (at the time intended to be 2021 cars before corona) and they left the ban on DAS in place for budget reasons since the budget cap was not delayed

It was toto who kinda pressured pirelli into changing something after multiple tire failures, pirelli then asking fia to do something bc the tires couldn’t handle aero loads, and fia coming up with the floor regs.

I genuinely believe Max to be one of those rare beasts, a master of his profession who can extract extra performance from a car that isn't there when looking at data and testing. Senna was another, able to run his car consistently not just on its level of performance but over it too.
If he's in a top 6 car, he's winning races no doubt. The 2023 season has been a stroll for him, but in a less competitive car he'd still be in the mix I reckon. He's so fast and consistent, and more importantly still brimming with the drive and determination required to be as successful as he is...

But, seeing Aston Martin in 2nd place at the beginning, then an equal fight between ferrari and mercedes over that space and now McLaren gunning for it at the end... is that not the definition of a competitive season? This season has been greater to watch than the Mercedes years where you have one driver, Hamilton, twitching his party mode knob as dictated by the pits and "Valtteri, it's James..." calls that make him the #1 driver. Hamilton has been greatly propped up by a hugely dominant car. You can see how Hamilton cannot even perform overtakes. Ruining the races of Piastri in Monza or Russell in Qatar. Nah. Hamilton should have quit. He is far removed from Max' caliber. There are better people on the grid. Like indeed Alonso.
Piastri is more championship material than Norris, though. Can see that throughout the last few GP clearly.

It is Max's and Red Bull's consistency that make them so strong. So even if you give the other drivers mentioned a competetive car, the driver and the team altogether need to show a similar level of consistency in the next two years. Yes, even the driver's championship is a team effort as we experienced in 2022 with Charles Leclerc. He did make some mistakes, but who knows how his mental fortitude would have stabilized with a proper functioning team. And don't forget that Max also made mistakes in 2022: For example, out of the blue he spun in Hungary driving towards his next win on P1. He only regained first place because Ferrari put Leclerc (against his will and even seeing the performance of other hard runners) on hard tyres and therefore he was basically a sitting duck as Max easily caught up to him again.
Or as Max binned quali in 2021 in Saudi Arabia in the very last corner as everybody thought he had that pole safe with that 2-3 tenths lead over Hamilton.
Nobody is perfect und unbeatable. But the combination of Max, the car and the team Red Bull is surely a very hard and tough opponent to go against.

Prost was at the top for six or seven years. Shumacher was at the top for six or seven years. Hamilton was at the top for six years or so. Vettel was at the top for five years or so. Verstappen has been on top for two years. He's got two to four years to go. And I don't think the next "big thing" Is even in F1 today.

Never heard so many complaints about dominance or boredom when Hammi was winning.. Such bias!
The entire Red Bull/Honda operation are functioning at likely the highest level of consistency we will ever see in F1. Shame the complainers keep themselves from appreciating the remarkable accomplishments we're witnessing the lastast couple years.

RB should go after Fernando for their second car. They’ll still favor Max but add to his legacy (if they’re as invested in that as it seems they are) by giving him a champion as a teammate to beat.

He will be stopped when FIA decides to
    Look at everyone in history, Schumacher/Ferrari 2000-2004, Hamilton/Mercedes 2014-2020
When they will release new rules and changes affecting them directly, which I suppose will be around 2026
    Then he will be stopped

      @EntropicExergy Рік тому +2

The FIA can't, because RB has built a car that does not rely on gimmicks like merc, ferrari and even previous domination RB. And since the new regs are not even known yet, there is no saying what 2026 will bring. Might well be RB acing their engine with all those merc and Honda engineers they hired for RBPT and continuing the domination.

Realistically Mercedes weren't stopped until 2022 with the ground effect. They still won the constructors title in 2021 and depending on the circuit still had the fastest car on the grid.

I just hope Max isn't dethroned the way Lewis was by an FIA regulation change. I'm convinced that that regulation change back in 2021 specifically targeted the low rake cars. It's not like that's the first time that the FIA has nerfed the team that dominated.

I think Max is the great differentiator at this point, a few others for sure caught up, Mclaren most def are on pace at times and sure predict Piastri too to become extremely hard to beat in the future? Max is just mature now combined with that raw speed, super fast I don't think anyone at the grid can beat him in that second RB19, was not always the case. I used to think Lewis, Fernando are on pace and hated it haha, now I just have no choice but wonder at that young mans pace.
Leclerc is not up there imho, neither is Lando, don't get me wrong the yare super good drivers, not at Max level though he is just one of these one in a gen and perhaps then some? Piastri is imho the next hope, Fernando too is mentally strong and refuse to drop pace but Max is Max, combined with a car like that no wonder

When he gets bored or wants to tone down. I don't think his goal is to stay at the top for a long time. He's here for a good time. If 26 cars aren't fun I see him likely hopping off and going into endurance racing within a few years.

I don't see Lando, Charles nor George being able to beat Max over a season, especially when you look at the mistakes they have made and ruined great achievements (although Lando hasn't made any huge mistake in a while now). Can it be Piastri? Maybe. He hit the ground running and is really close to Norris in his first season, but at this very moment, I think only Lewis and Fernando can put up a fight, and still, it's gonna be very ugly. As long as he is at least three tenths behind the fastest car, he's good enough to win.
