This doesn't sound like the Eagles the Eagles sounded like him after he joined the band. Lol. This album predates his tenure with the Eagles by several years.
"Not the eagles, man! I hate the fucking eagles!!; I'm with Lebowski on this. I love Joe and pretend he was never in the eagles. Or I tell myself he only played with them to get more cocaine/ vodka money.
This song was written in 1972 about his feelings about leaving the James gang and moving to Colorado. It was a few years later that he joined the Eagles. He had a big impact on their sound.
Watch Joe on "Live from Daryl's House" (circa 2012) when these 2 Icons jam out together for the 1st time. It is.... indescribable. There aren't any words that can describe or paint this picture. You just have to experience it for yourselves.
Some time after the Eagles broke up in 1980, I heard Walsh in a radio interview asked if the Eagle would ever get back together and Joe said, “I’m still an Eagle! I didn’t break up. All the other guys left, I’m just waiting for them to come back.”
Let's not forget he formed the band Barnstorm in between JG and his solo career. This is actually Barnstorm's last of 3 albums, released in '73. JW insisted to the record label ABC-Dunhill to put his name above the biplane, which truly broke up the band so he could begin his official solo career.
@@dunhill1 I saw this tour...was leaning on the stage. There was a vase with roses in front of his mic. He threw it out over the crowd...the contents....not the vase...haha. Point Blank opened up. Like $6.00....

With all due respect, this is not a James Gang album. This is after them and when JW formed the band, Barnstorm. I bought this when it came out in the fall of '73 under the ABC-Dunhill record label. The rest of the band that played on this album were the rest of the Barnstormers, Joe Vitale, Rock Grace, and Kenny Passareli. It was produced by famous Eagles producer, Bill Szymczyk. I'm looking at the back of the album cover now. They were only together for 2 years and made only 3 albums. What confuses the public at large is the fact that Joe Walsh had only his name put on the album and that's what split the band. The James gang was made up of Jim Fox and Tom Chris. I just wanted to correct the record so to speak.

Joe Walsh was first known as the leader of The James Gang, who's big hit was "Funk 49". Then he had a solo career before The Eagles added him to their lineup years after this to give them more of a rock edge. He was a big fan of Duane Allman's slide playing, which is why he tunes his guitar in open E. He used the talk box which he got from pedal steel player Pete Drake before Peter Frampton popularized it with "Frampton Comes Alive". There is also a Y.Tube video of a live Jeff Beck performance of the Beatles' "She's A Woman" using one which says 1974. Also see Y.Tube clips of a precursor to this used by Alvino Rey in a 1944 movie, where it was known as Stringy The Talking Steel Guitar. Before Walsh sobered up, he was known for trashing hotel rooms like Keith Moon. This is referred to in the lyrics to his song "Life's Been Good To Me".
Keith Moon actually coached Joe n2 some of the "hotel trashing" but it was usually Keith Moon himself doing the trashing while he convinced Joe to hang out. Joe actually discusses this in a yt vid while explaining how "Life's Been Good" came to fruition. U should give that a listen, it's pretty funny.
Let's not forget he formed Barnstorm between James Gang and his solo career. This track is actually from Barnstorm's last album. I bought it new in 1973 and the other 3 members listed on this album are rest of Barnstorm and not the James Gang members. Barnstorm led by JW released 3 albums over just 2years and they were produced by Eagles producer Bill Szymczyk and on the same ABC-Dunhill label.
Walk Away was about as big a hit as Funk #49 I think. I don't think either one was super high on the singles chart, but they've remained more popular over the decades than most of the songs that topped them I daresay.

Been to see him a few times, last time was 5 years ago, going to a JW concert is like going to his house for a party, he is very happy you came and appreciates that you came to see him, like going to your neighbors house, just a real guy.
Yes Yes Yesssss, first class on every level! Joe Walsh is one of the coolest and fun guys! Vocals are just as they should be, everything else falls into place with this song. Love!!
Joe Vitale is Joe Walsh's drummer and long time childhood friend. I love how you noticed his work with dynamics. You hear so much in the drums when you know Joe Vitale is on the kit.
Joe Wash's career was established long before he joined that California Band. He's the best thing that ever happened to the Eagles. He's one of the most respected guitarist in the business. He's played with a virtual Who's Who's of rock's elite.
@@rundoetx I just googled them and you are correct. I can't remember where I got the (false) information that they originated in Detroit. It never did quite sit right with me. I always thought they sounded more West Coast than the home of Suzi, MC5 and The Stooges after all. Cheers mate.
@@stevious7278 The original Alice Cooper Band cut the u teeth there too. The 1971, prepunk punk band Death, hails from Detroit too. Rich rock history in that town.
Only Glenn Frey came from Detroit. The rest of the Eagles came from other various places in the country. The only one that actually came from California was Timothy B. Schmit and he was the last one to become an Eagle.
The structure of this song is like getting off the phone with your friend and he says hey I'm driving by so and so's...and run run down to so and so's and meet him there. He told you where he was heading on every bar and you were still excited to run ahead and meet him there with equal enthusiasm. Pure Joe joy
Joe Walsh quote before playing Rocky Mountain Way at a concert. "Well, if I knew I'd have to play this song the rest of my life I probably would have wrote something else. But it's too late, you're stuck with this one." My feelings exactly.
Joe Walsh has been around since 60's "James Gang" etc and he's been his own man with his own creative style, one of the greats in writing and guitar playing has a funny sense of humor.
OMGossshhh! One of my very fave Joe Walsh songs! So cool..& I knew u guys would luv it! He did this one b4 he joined the Eagles..when in the James Gang..or as a singular artist. But..this is abt Colorado where I live now. Saw him in a sm venue @ Ft. Carson Army Base in '92..we got on front row..only a few ft away from the stage that was @ audience level in the aftn. So great! Thx 4 this one, guys! 🙂🙂☮☮✌✌💕💕
Joe is a ham radio operator and I used to work for a company that manufactured shortwave radio accessories. He used to order occasionally and I would smile every time I saw his name on an invoice. Also, Gordon Lightfoot. 😊✌️
I'm a ham operator too, and Joe has bought several pieces of equipment from me like vintage microphones and shortwave receivers....He sent me a signed copy of the When Hell Freezes Over album on CD....Kinda cool...!!!
@@jordan390a nice!!!! The customer service rep had a signed photo on the wall in his office, he'd met Joe at some ham fest or another. If I remember correctly, he told me Joe is partial to the old Collins equipment. Said he's a super chill and nice guy. 😊✌️
Joe was on his own and kicking ass way before the eagles. They (eagles) wanted and needed a rock guitarist and they reached out and got Joe and that is that a masterful move for sure
Saw Joe with The Eagles a few years ago. In the middle of the set he played this and Life’s Been Good. He still smashes it out. The original guitar gunslinger.
I'm so very grateful I was able to see The Eagles in concert. I love them all and they had such a great connection to each other that worked together. Joe Walsh is also very funny...I absolutely love his sense of humor!
Guys, Joe Walsh is the same dude who was funking it out on "Funk 49" with the James Gang. He has inspired a lot of guitar players, including Joe Perry. One of the top 10 guitar players on the planet.
Watching you guys always makes me smile, and I think I've figured out why. Showing my daughter movies and music that I like almost always gets the eye roll, and a Daaaaaad. You guys actually enjoy and appreciate it. It's like having kids that listen to you. My kid is great and I wouldn't change anything, and she does "get it" most of the time but that may be why so many old people like me watch.
I walked right by him..... I was so into taking my Rhodes 88 stage home that I just finished paying off and I wasnt paying attention. I was at Profound Sound in Andover, Kansas... And as we left there and drove home, my bass player said.. did you see who we just passed... and I thought for a bit and we both said at the same time.. 'Joe Walsh'! I almost turned around to go back... but we had a band practice scheduled and I really wanted to play my 88 with the band.. It fit in so well with my Vox Super Continental...
“The Confessor” is another great song that came out around 1985 and has a great heavy guitar solo! He started however in late 60’s with several classic songs through the 70’s! Most of us boomers have heard them all!
Such a great song/abt Colorado. Wish u guys had the 1976 live performance of this one..so cool! Joe Walsh was in the James Gang b4 he joined The Eagles. 🙂🙂☮☮✌✌💕💕
Great reaction, gents! Joe Walsh was making bangers like this well before The Eagles had their first hit. Please listen to Funk 48 and Funk 49 for early Joe leading a power trio! Also, I love them both, but it would be Joe Walsh over the Eagles for jamming in the car for me!
I was listening to Joe Walsh well before the Eagles. He is pure Rock and Roll and awesome on the guitar, with an original voice to go along. Major talent! I would listen to Joe Walsh before the Eagles. Still do.
Most impressive part of the reverb snare is that was 1973 - really hard to find that in any song of that era. Seems that you guys are up on stuff, but consideration of the times - nobody had ever heard a talk box before. A lot of stuff you guys play, when it was released was revolutionary for the times.
"...nobody had ever heard a talk box before." Absolute nonsense. Stevie Wonder used a Kustom one on a TV special the year before this came out, and the wider definition of "talk box," which includes throat microphones goes back to 1939.
@@rollomaughfling380 "nobody" is in reference to most guitar players that I knew or even the general public. Of course Joe Walsh didn't invent it. Before that record, "most" people were unaware of it. Frampton later utilized it in being a big part of another hit record ( several ) - Nazareth - Hair of the Dog and others also used it.
@@rollomaughfling380 What a troll. I can assure you that I am not out of my depth, because you took a normal sentence and took it as literal. I worked in the industry for decades and was old enough to know what was well known in the industry at that time. Even if you don't understand, doesn't give you the opportunity to call something "nonsense" and then give examples of the alternate that are not well known at all. When Rocky Mountain way was a standard radio add, the talk amongst guitar players was, how is he getting that sound on the solo? It is just a point that there was very little popular singles featuring a talk box. Sorry if that somehow offends you.
Headed to Philmont, NM to spend three weeks hiking in the Rockies (with the BSA) and this song had just peaked. Heard it (and loved it) in every city and town we went through from Ohio to NM! 🤙
The Eagles put out seven albums. Joe Walsh did 11 solo albums, plus four with Barnstorm and two with James Gang. So Walsh's catalog is actually more than twice as large.
@@davidluke7996 Maybe they should listen to the song Hotel California or Take it easy. these are 2 songs that these guys most likely never heard of. I am STILL convinced they are Amish born without electricity or just scammer liars. ok I dont believe they are not Amish so then....
Joe Walsh .... dudes a trip.... guitar work is sooo original and erratic. Music he created was his, and unmistakeable when you hear it you know who it is
Good time rock and roller and full-on life of the party... even as a sober man. The Eagles manager suggested Joe's approach as the model for production and reaching a broader audience. Seen him with Eagles in 79 and solo twice in the 80s. STUD!!!
Fun story about this song: Joe was staying in the Rocky Mtns. to get away from it all and he was out mowing the lawn on a riding mower. While mowing he got the idea "Rocky Mountain way, better than the way we had" and got so excited about the song idea he jumped off the tractor and ran inside the house to get it down. Unfortunately, the tractor kept going and plowed through his neighbors garden. He said it ended up being an expensive song to write after paying for the damage. :P
Andy and Alex - Thanks for the BIG smile today! It was sorely needed as of late. Joe Walsh is a one of our quirky national treasures. To answer your question... I listen to both Eagles and Joe Walsh. I can't separate them at this point. This reminds me of summer and parties at the lake or dive bar fun (works anywhere). Beautiful week to you! (i may be quiet lately, but i am watching. take care!)
Yes that would be Rocke Grace, legendary keyboardist. This is actually Barnstorm's last album before JW began is solo career officially. People always forget he formed Barnstorm between The James Gang and his solo career. Hat's off to Barnstorm led by JW for this great song.
No party, in the late 70s, was complete without this song. My first choice? Eagles, hands down. But each of the members, at some point, did solo work I find completely awesome; so there's that. 😏
Last time I saw The Eagles in concert was around 2003. A surprisingly young man and his wife sat next to me and my friend, and he screamed "Rocky Mountain Way!!!" after the end of every song until they finally played it. Then he almost stroked out from the excitement. I was like, same dude, this song is LEGIT.
Joe is my primary reason to listen to the Eagles, I greatly prefer him as a solo artist because it lets him do more... he was always just the part of Eagles that gave them a rock edge to their sound, with too many egos in that band that had to be satisfied imo...

Joe Walsh added to the Eagles sound pallet, giving them a greater "edge".
“Turn To Stone” (So What version) is essential. Walsh doesn’t have the same polish as the Eagles, but his rawness is a huge strength.

"In The City" is another great song. Glad you enjoyed it!!
Andy has the feels... Alex has the analytics. That's why y'all work so well as a pair. Love it boys, cheers!
Check out Little River band! Glenn Frey of the Eagles refers to them as the best singing band in the world!
Yes Yes Yesssss, first class on every level! Joe Walsh is one of the coolest and fun guys! Vocals are just as they should be, everything else falls into place with this song. Love!!
Excellent choice guys!! Next up is "All Night Long" because Joe Walsh doesn't have a bad song.
I think they are gonna like I.L.B.T's
He really doesn't 👍🏼🤘🏼
Exactly
Absolutely. All Night Long is arguably my fave Walsh song.
I agree wholeheartedly...But didn't The Eagles come out of Detroit?
@@stevious7278I think they formed up in Los Angeles
I was 13 in '73 when this song came out. Loved it from the start!
Try “The Bomber” James Gang - Joe Walsh
Tons of SAUCE
So many don't know about this gem!! Glad to see others have found this kick ass groove!!
The Bomber is a miust
Classic song, love what it says on the inside of Rides Again. “MADE LOUD, TO BE PLAYED LOUD” truer words never spoken.
Who can resist the most badass guitar riff of all time?
"I'd Love to Change the World" by Ten Years After.... they played Woodstock
Joe likes almost anything with vacuum tubes in it...! Collins, National, Globe, Heathkit etc.... Just like me...!
SUNDOWN!
@Marie Lavery & @Jordan390a did either of you ever deal with Henry Radio in L.A.? I used to work for them. 🙂
JW: The Confessor. His TOTAL performance will reward your patience!
James Gang - "The Bomber", Barnstorm - "Turned to Stone" both great, vintage Joe Walsh
Definitely S-tier!! This is my favorite Joe Walsh song!!
I agree, Always loved this Song! The Snare drum is Wicked!😊
Saw the Eagles live a couple of years before Glen Frye passed away. They gave Joe Walsh his own set to play, stole the show!!
Joe Walsh is a legend. The stories of him on the road destroying hotel rooms and partying all night long are the best.
totally! His songs even tell of his exploits to a degree. Pull from your reality and pen a amazing tune...
Joe? Really?
not if you're the hotel manager
Joe is a beast!
@@TeamPill 😂😂
I'm so very grateful I was able to see The Eagles in concert. I love them all and they had such a great connection to each other that worked together. Joe Walsh is also very funny...I absolutely love his sense of humor!
Not everyone rates it as highly as I do, but I love "The Confessor" by Joe Walsh.
I do..I love The Confessor!
That’s a goose bump song. “The Confessor”.
I confess… love “the confessor”
Confessor is my favourite too
Guys, Joe Walsh is the same dude who was funking it out on "Funk 49" with the James Gang.
Maybe you can adopt one or both of the guys???
@@mikeclarke1961 They're doing pretty good. They're more like the guys at a party you want to show your record collection to.
You're the kids I never had . . . instead of the kids I DID have, who are a couple of slugs.
Michael McDonald - I Keep Forgettin'. You can't go wrong with this song!
“The Confessor” is another great song that came out around 1985 and has a great heavy guitar solo! He started however in late 60’s with several classic songs through the 70’s! Most of us boomers have heard them all!
"A Life of Illusion" is another great Joe Walsh song.
Wife here.., Soooo Glad I saw the Eagles on the "Hell Freezes Over".tour...Joe Walsh was Awesome!!!..As we're they all...Great Reaction!!!
Nice Tuesday bonus. Go with "A Life of Illusion" for the next Walsh.
Awesome song and the lyrics are eternal
I second that motion.
@@DrumAndDrumber - Lol! Well, if you like one...
For those of us old guys, this song has been a staple on our Rock n Roll Wall of Fame since the 70s...and it STILL ROCKS!
I have always been partial to "A Life Of Illusion" from Joe. Worth a listen.
I was listening to Joe Walsh well before the Eagles. He is pure Rock and Roll and awesome on the guitar, with an original voice to go along. Major talent!
I would listen to Joe Walsh before the Eagles. Still do.
Joe was also in the James Gang. So you have heard and reviewed more of his song than you thought.
I'm sure they knew that since they already reacted to Funk 49
and he also formed Barnstorm, which this track is from their last album released in '73.
I consider myself extremely fortunate to have been listening to Joe Walsh for more than 40 years
You reviewed Life's Been Good before so this is actually the second Joe Walsh song you've heard.
This video was on patreon quite a while ago. I think it was the first "Joe Walsh" song they listened too.
Another Rock and Roll Party Anthem that came out of the 70's. Been there done that! R&R is not complete without Joe Walsh and Rocky Mountain Way!!
The Confessor is the real banger.
Been requesting "The Confessor"🔥for over 2 years now!💯😁 My favorite Joe Walsh song!🤗 Hope them young'uns will get around to it one of these days!😂❤️✌️
Nah. Turn To Stone.
Beg to (slightly) differ - "The Bomber".
The James Gang Live is the definitive guitar showcase for Joe Walsh. Top 10 live album for sure, Vic in the Berkshires.
great song great guitarist.... Thanks again guys....you rock try Walk Away...
Most impressive part of the reverb snare is that was 1973 - really hard to find that in any song of that era. Seems that you guys are up on stuff, but consideration of the times - nobody had ever heard a talk box before. A lot of stuff you guys play, when it was released was revolutionary for the times.
Drummer Joe Vitale released a solo album, Roller Coaster Weekend. His guitarists were Joe Walsh, Rick Derringer and Phil Keaggey! (All from Ohio too.)
@@JimRobinson-colors You're out of your depth.
Good mornin guys. Good banger. Thanks
I have a handmade purse made from this lp cover.
Headed to Philmont, NM to spend three weeks hiking in the Rockies (with the BSA) and this song had just peaked. Heard it (and loved it) in every city and town we went through from Ohio to NM! 🤙
You guys already did “Life’s Been Good” by Joe, my personal favorite. With that being said, I prefer The Eagles, obviously a much larger catalog
The Eagles put out seven albums. Joe Walsh did 11 solo albums, plus four with Barnstorm and two with James Gang. So Walsh's catalog is actually more than twice as large.
@@davidluke7996 that may be true, but what I meant was hits.
@@danhunt1830 True.
Music he created was his, and unmistakeable when you hear it you know who it is
"Keep Your Hands to Yourself" by The Georgia Satellites.
What a fun song this is
Also love "She ain't pretty, she just looks that way"
One of my all times faves.
This was way before the Eagles. This is why Glenn wanted Joe in the band, to inject a little rock n roll and attitude into the band.
Joe's the man! 😊
That snare goes all the way down the hallway
Love it
Andy- chics rock out too! “Woman in the car.” 😆 at least we did back.in the day! You’d be surprised what I played in MY car..
it was going 185, just like his Maserati. you can't overlook the details!
I'm sure he was heavily medicated as well.
(i may be quiet lately, but i am watching. take care!)
The piano is killer.
Adds so much to the sauce.
Yes that would be Rocke Grace, legendary keyboardist. This is actually Barnstorm's last album before JW began is solo career officially. People always forget he formed Barnstorm between The James Gang and his solo career. Hat's off to Barnstorm led by JW for this great song.
Dudes - fantastic memories in the 70”s cranking this in the car with buddies. Think summer time at the lake. Good times.
I remember this one ✌️ try reviewing Turn to Stone 1972 or In The City 1978. Both great, both different.
Joe is great with the gentler songs like Indian Summer.
Hurray!! I've been waiting for this one for months! Thanks guys!
Hotel California is the only Eagles album I own (if you don’t count the Hell Freezes Over laserdisc). And Joe is the only reason I bought that album.
Just got home from work, driving through the rain, what a treat! Thanks guys!
Next up with Joe...."Life's Been Good" (especially the Live from Daryl's house episode.) You'll not regret it.
I love this guy since late 60s I think.....
Can't remember exactly.
James Gang best ever.
