He's been a favorite of mine as well. You're right Tony, he does have perfect tone and clarity and I believe it's due to 2 things. He has an ear for perfect pitch and knows how to set up a guitar's neck, bridge and pick-up heights to get great intonation and of course he's a great guitarist who plays from the heart.

Love the way Joe plays with the backbeat, slipping over under sideways to the rhythm section. The backbeat is the key to the blues and Walsh is so inventive and smooth as he swoops around the beat. Just a beautiful player.

Joe not only played fantastic with the James Gang and solo, he played on a lot of hit records in the seventies uncredited. He played the great slide on Jay Ferguson hit single Thunder Island. Not sure there was a better guitar duo than Walsh and Felder. As great as Walsh is, Felder may even be on a different level. That's how powerful a duo the Eagles had.

No one expected Joe Walsh. We were all cool with Hendrix and the Stones and old Cream... but then, you're sitting around and what the .... is this? The talk box was revolutionary, it was monstrous, other worldly... and the slide with the echo feedback on the original Rocky Mountain? It made you drop your roach clip.
Joe Walsh is all about the noises he can make... the artistic sounds that he can either bring out of a guitar or breath through the guitar. He was avant-garde in the early 70's. The distortion, the bending, the "taking all the time to get where you both knew where he was going" stretching and reshaping sound on top of sound.
My immediate reaction was that I wanted to buy a 5 pound bag of whatever it was that Joe was smokin'. I could only imagine brother Walsh sitting around all day screwing with sounds to see what gave him the giggles and that he could adapt into a song. He is really a clever and sly dude. That's why I think everybody smiles to themselves when Joe steps up to play and sing. They know Joe worked on something that was going to tickle their ears in a different way.
Sophie Lloyd has a video out where she receives her "talk box" receiver/pedal. After going through and explaining all of its gizmos she sets it up to play it for the very first time. She barely makes it whisper... which knocked me out again about Joe Walsh and Peter Frampton. You gotta get your lungs into it to make it squall and squeal! Even more appreciation for the one and only.
Soundboards can replicate the basics of the talk box but they can't replace the ingenuity and imagination it takes to make unique and memorable sounds. "Canned is Canned." As Joe says, 'the artist has to 'authenticate' his music by putting himself in front of an audience. Until he does, he cannot 'testify' to the realness of his sounds. That human emotion and physical release of sound is real, all else is just trash can garbage.

Very underrated player, IMO. I love his style. Knows when to come in and doesn’t overstay his welcome. Michael Schenker had the same ability of making the guitar talk, was very tasteful. Joe used to spend a good deal of time in Chicago in the late eighties and I heard him on the radio telling this story. He was sitting in the back of his limo because they wouldn’t let him drive anymore and Don’t mean nothin by Richard Marx comes on the radio and it starts with this guitar solo and Joe says “Hey, that guy’s pretty good...oh yeah, I forgot I did that”. He’s hilarious. Every time he was on Steve Dahl and Garry Meier’s show I would laugh so hard I would have tears streaming down my face.

Sorry but this will be rambling. I'm enjoying seeing younger people discover Joe. I'm not a guitar player but have some personal history with Joe and have followed him since the James Gang in Cleveland. "How ya doing?" Through his drunken years (post Eagles) I would tell people how great of a player he was but most didn't take him seriously. After all he was a mess. Thankfully he cleaned up and is still showing what he's got. He's 6-7 years older than me. Right after he joined the Gang around 1968-69 he somehow needed a place to stay and wound up sleeping in the basement of a nearby hippie house. I was around 14-15 and we used to watch the Gang practice in the garage. We thought it was cool when we got to help them load their equipment a few times into a POS rusted out phone company van. I think it was Jim Fox's. In those days Joe seemed like a dick in person because he wouldn't look you in the eye. Dale was friendly to me and Jim Fox didn't waste his time talking to us young punks lol. I think Joe actually has attention deficit disorder and he has said that himself in one interview I saw. I'm no doctor but maybe that explains his rocking back and forth and always seeming to be playing somewhere instead of finding other hobbies. Doing the steady touring like he does at his age is amazing. I remember he used to be like a zombie for about 4-5 songs then it was like he suddenly woke up and played great. When I was around 16-17 we used to get into night clubs in the area under age. We got to hear some garage jam sessions which was really what they were about when playing in the clubs. He still rarely plays the same the same way twice. Funk 49 was derived from a jam they used to play in the middle of other tunes. A few times we got out of school and we woke Joe up about 3:30 in the afternoon with a cold 6 pack of PBR. He slept on a mattress on the basement floor. I doubt he does that nowadays. That lasted several weeks I guess and he eventually moved out of the hippie house. Back to his playing style. Tell me if I'm crazy but he seemed to have a habit of doing his solos at the end of his songs as it was fading. Not all but a lot of them. Sometimes you have to listen for them. I never understood that. Locally people thought his guitar sounded like a singers voice in some respects. I never heard that opinion again until Glen Frey mentioned it in the Eagles documentary. Pete Townshend mentioned Joe is one of the smoothest players. Slash said Joe was his second favorite behind Hendrix. I saw a story from Peter Frampton that Bob Heil was in England showing Peter his new version of the Talk Box. There had been several home brew versions before Heil's. Heil shipped the same unit to Joe in Colorado and he used it to record Rocky Mountain Way. Frampton I think is the only one I've heard able to mouth words with it. At the time I had no idea where Colorado was but heard Joe went there. His reasons for leaving Cleveland the the Gang are well documented (Rocky Mountain Way). A couple of people in my home town talked to him once in a while after he left. When the Kirscher Rock Concert show was on a bunch of us gathered at some girls place to watch it. Joe had talked to one of the girls earlier in the week to tell her what was going on with it. I eventually moved to Colorado and in 2012 had a meet and greet with Joe. I told him I was one of those punk kids that hung out and helped them load their vans. He laughed and said he remembered that stuff. I figure there's about a 99 percent chance he was just trying to make me feel good but it was cool anyway. He's a real nice guy in person. I meant to ask him some questions and got kind of tongue tied. Oh well. Bill Symczyk introduced himself. Another real nice regular guy. Anyway it's interesting to see the younger generation appreciating his playing. He is unique and I can't think of any of his tunes being covered by other bands at least trying to make it a hit record. My last comment is I keep seeing arguments about Walsh versus Felder. They were good friends, challenged each other to play better, but they was different but complementary styles. Felder sounds good to my ears and brain, Walsh feels good to my heart and soul. My kids never want to hear these stories to thanks for putting up with this. Maybe a few other Cleveland people will jump in and add their memories.

Keith James+ Great story, followed Joe's story and his music, ups and downs. I'm from UK and his style probably appealed to Pete Townshend because his style is rhythm, raunchy and rocky with lead thrown in. It was essentially the birth of heavy rock because his James Gang earlier stuff is definitely heavy. Walsh has a unique guitar style that I have not heard anyone match or come close to, I can recognise it as if someone talking it is that distinctive, plus the voice gives it away. The only guitarists that come close in style/tone are Steve Lukather, Peter Frampton, Jimmy Page.
Great feel for the guitar and his handling is masterful - expressive, gutsy, raunchy, rocky - embodies rock guitar music at least to me - not a shredder, not a speed fret wizard - pure melodic well constructed guitar passages, riffs.
Few guitarists from this era and to present day who I really admire for his talent, his charisma, his jovial goofy nature.
Joe was given a real boost by Pete Townshend to UK to support the Who in their hey day, which really helped him with James Gang, during that time they supported Jimi Hendrix, Sly and the Family Stone, Yes, Jethro Tull, Deep Purple, Three Dog Night, Mountain, Iron Butterfly, Allman Brothers Band, The Who and many more names from that period. 1969 - 1975. Joined Eagles in 1976. An old Rock Encyclopedia (1975) wrote that his forthcoming tenure with the Eagles would likely be a short one !! I think he would have picked up a lot from touring with The Who both in terms of style, rock musical style and other bands that the band supported as they were typically a support act rather than a headline act, so the name had less of a resonance than other band names at the time. Played everywhere, The Who played all over UK in major cities, so must have given them great exposure.
      When Keith mentions:-
" I saw a story from Peter Frampton that Bob Heil was in England showing Peter his new version of the Talk Box. There had been several home brew versions before Heil's. Heil shipped the same unit to Joe in Colorado and he used it to record Rocky Mountain Way. Frampton I think is the only one I've heard able to mouth words with it."
Peter Frampton played with a group called Humble Pie and when the James Gang disbanded after touring, Joe was asked by Steve Marriott to join Humble Pie to replace Frampton who was leaving. The connection is not only with the talk box but the band. Joe decided to set up Barnstorm in Colorado, Rocky Mountain Way was born from time in Caribou studios. The rest became history.. The Eagles in 1976 probably a year after this video.
His autobiography would be a great read of the ups and downs, famous people he's met (Keith Moon), guitarists, celebrities (John Belushi), rooms trashed, high and lows of drugs/alcohol, marriages and affairs, that's outside the body of great guitar work he's produced.
A highly respected rock guitarist from many quarters: Jimmy Page, Eric Clapton.

I had the privilege of seeing Joe with James Gang during their first national tour, circa "Rides Again" and then a couple of times with his Barnstorm ensemble. A very creative and accomplished composer & musician and I don't think he is appreciated enough away from the Eagles. He certainly added a lot to the Eagles, too. As an aside, regarding Joe's personality, I was listening to my favorite FM station in my car on a Friday afternoon during the 70's in Kansas City, MO. Joe was playing live the following day and back then, stations often invited the musicians into their studio to talk about the upcoming show, etc. Joe came in with an acoustic guitar and proceeded to play a song in one key on the guitar and sang it in a different key. I play and I didn't unsderstand how he did that and still don't to this day.

Most of us knew that he recorded at Caribou in the hey day of that studio and felt really attached to the party atmosphere of his rock. I can remember hiking and camping or just ditching school in the late spring to go to a natural wasterslide of smooth rock and water or hanging out on a sun drenched cliff to wipe out the winter blues. Frampton was first introduced to the Voice Box by Nashville pedal steel player Pete Drake when they were both working on George Harrison's 'All Things Must Pass' album. According to Frampton, during a break Drake said to him, 'Hey kid, have you ever seen one of these?' It was an original voice box as popularized by Drake in the 60s. But the concept goes back to about 1939. The Who used a Sonovox for voices on an advert on their '67 album 'The Who Sell Out'. Kustom Amplification introduced in '68 'The Bag', which was used at the time by John Kay of Steppenwolf and Mike Pinera of Iron Butterfly (check 'Butterfly Bleu'). Jeff Beck later used one in Beck Bogert & Appice. But the Voice Box that Walsh and Frampton used came from the country scene; Joe Walsh met Speedy West, popular pedal steel-playing husband of country singing star Dottie West, and he gave one - or what remained of one - to Walsh. Joe used it for recording 'Rocky Mountain Way', but it wasn't powerful enough for live situations, so he and Bob Heil - they're both electronics freaks - reconfigured the concept to make it more powerful...which added to the rumour that the vibrations would loosen one's teeth. In chronological terms Walsh and Frampton both first recorded a Voice Box on record around the same time. Walsh used his on the album 'The Smoker You Drink The Player You Get', Frampton used his on 'Frampton's Camel'. Recording for Walsh's album started in 'late '72' and the disc was released in June '73. Frampton's album was recorded between Dec. '72 and June '73. The difference was that Walsh had the hit with 'Rock Mountain Way', while Frampton, still struggling with his solo career, used his as a minor effect for the opening of this tune: ua-cam.com/video/IyC8Pu44vaU/v-deo.html

I went with my band F.L Flyer to a concert at the Sacramento Memorial Auditorium in (as I recall) 1975. The James Gang had just come off the road. Joe's tenure with The Eagles was just about to start. Their opening act was Link Wray. I could spend an hour on Rumble alone; however the James Gang did all the stuff for us like Funk 49 and Seems To Me. It was over the top great. During all this, one gold top Les Paul sat on a stand, not touched. We KNEW something was up when the last song was done. The lights went down for what seemed to be an eternity....then several roadies carried a wooden packing crate onto the stage under one spotlight. From inside the box, Joe kicked the front side of the crate to the floor. He was wearing a railroad engineer's hat. He stepped onto the stage and picked up that Les Paul and fired up the slide intro to Rocky Mountain Way. You should have been there. I was, and it was better than you can ever dream. Damn.

I learned to play behind the nor\team, just a little late and it makes the song so much better with such emotion...I also learned the importance of a clean smooth vibrato. I also learned the way to step on the high notes cleanly and with strength...yes I listened to a multitude of guitar players. He was my favorite talk box...Wah-wah from Jimmie Hendrix, and a whammy pedal from satriani !

Hi mate. Great video. Listened to an interview with Joe back in 86. He said Bill West, husband of country singer Dotty West invented the talk box and gave it to him. In 75 Frampton left Humble Pie and Walsh considered replacing him. He showed Frampton how to use the Talk Box. He eventually turned Humble Pie down and joined the Eagles.

I used to have DVD copy of Eric Clapton’s Crossroads Festival, which featured Joe Walsh. On top of being a world-class musician, he’s also really funny. He came out on stage and just before playing Rocky Mountain Way, he said, “If I’d known I was going to have to play this song for the rest of my life, I’d have written something else.”

      Redbeard,
Speaking to Joe's sense of humor. The other day I ran across across YT vid of Joe, from early 2012. He comes on stage pre-show, sits on a stool and describes how he wrote "Life's Been Good". As he's going through the lyrics, "I live in hotels... Tear out the walls" specifically. He tells a short story involving Keith Moon. This was from a time when The JG was supporting The Who's Tommy tour. He said, "One of the most terrifying things that ever happened to me was when Keith Moon decided he liked me". Pure gold.

"The James Gang used to play in Nashville,” explained Walsh,” and I became good friends with Dottie West, the famous classic country singer. We would go to her house and people would come over, and we would sit around with an acoustic guitar and pass it around. That could be anybody - Chet Atkins, Glen Campbell, Roger Miller -- whoever was in town. Dottie’s husband, Bill West, was a pedal steel player. He actually invented the talk box that was used on Pete Drake’s album. One day, while I was at Dottie’s house, Bill went out to the garage and got it and gave it to me. He said, ‘Here, you plug this end into your mouth. You’ll figure it out.’”
Walsh said it took a couple of months for him to become proficient with the device. “After I got the hang of it, I then figured out how it was built. I went to a hardware store and got some parts and made one for myself. ‘Rocky Mountain Way’ was the first time I used it on record. I showed it to a friend of mine named Bob Heil, who has a manufacturing company, and he [started making] them. I still have the original -- the one Bill West gave me -- tucked away in a storage locker.”
In fact, the original talk box used on “Rocky Mountain Way" had only enough volume for studio use. Together, Walsh and Heil developed a unit powerful enough for live shows

What a classic. I haven’t heard Rocky Mountain Way since high school. I remember when these talk boxes were all the rage back then. The guitar salesmen I used to deal with at Washington Music Center back in that day told me that many people were complaining that those boxes were knocking their fillings loose.
I found it hard to believe that it could do that by sending the signal through your mouth cavity, since the signal pre-amp really isn’t that strong. It may have been a false rumor started. If I heard it from someone on the street, I would have immediately dismissed it, but this guy really knew a lot about the analog guitar processing back then. Anyway, I didn’t buy one because of that and I think I bought a flanger or something instead.
Speaking of that, I have a trivia question for you Fil, or anyone else in music. Where did the Flanger get it’s name from. No fair cheating and googling it.

Joe has the 'slow hand' to be sure...and you can tell he has a lot of fun on stage.

I remember my brother and I watching, listening to Joe doing this. Then taking a Les Paul, a Marshall, and an aquarium aerator and making a "talk box". It worked, but not at the level Joe (or Peter) did

Great vid Fil! I've been a Joe Walsh fan since he first joined the Eagles. I went back and started collecting all of his creations. I love his musical expression playing live, especially when he's playing slide. I attempt to play, but I'm not even the same Galaxy, LOL. Keep up the great work with the video's! Love 'em! Yes, I did subscribe, also!
