- Howard Astill and his team at Astill Design restore #66 Ford Cobra Venom
Howard and Dale go through photos and the details of restoring Cobra Venom, number 66 of the Cobras made.
Super Rare 351 Cobra #66. One of the limited run of 400. The car has had a Tremec 600 5 speed manual gearbox using a Mal Wood Automotive Kit. The 9 inch differential was upgraded with a Strange centre utilising Truetrac limited slip and billet axels. The car has been completely rebuilt to be like new inside and out. The seats were rebuilt by Global Trim in Albury, all the plating was done by A class metal finishes. The front suspension is from RRS Suspension and improves castor, and Ackerman, responds faster, creates a jacking effects, which will optimize the suspension performance. It also includes power rack and pinion steering.
The engine in the car was built from scratch by Westend performance in Campbelltown. It featured

We had these cars and we took them for granted. You wonder how many owners they've gone through, how many historical mods through the 80's and 90's they were subjected to and where they are now?
Yeah there aren’t many original ones.
Stamped out in Geelong and assembled in broadmedows , I worked as a tool maker at the time and remember so many of those parts. The golden years when we could make a great car .
Oh so true!!
Another one saved, excellent workmanship guys and great to see your still hammering away Howard and Dale 💥💥💥
Cheers mate, yes trying to get my van done
Love your work Howard.
you have made me a Better tradesman.
Thanks for following, lucky to have the right customers
Don’t really like watching a lot of these movie length things on UA-cam but gotta say really enjoying these series!!! All the work and the knowledge is incredible to listen to and see!!
Glad you like them! I try to keep them as short as I can but their is too much to tell.
A work of art. Thank you for sharing.
Our pleasure, your comments make it worthwhile
Another Aussie Icon restored by the Best in The Business. Thanks for sharing Howard and Dale. Never forget Louise either for her excellent editing skills.
Team Astill Rock !!
Yes Oh so true, Louise has to place all 500 photos, get the music right and come up with the intro. There is around 40 total hours to collate, film, edit, proof each Build series.
@@AstillDesign She's a Gem Howard. For sure.
Another masterpiece, beautiful work Howard!
Thank you! Cheers!
Wow, I think this might be my favourite car from your collection Howard - amazing!
Glad you like it, It is a shame very few people have seen it.
Beautiful build, weld done to all involved. Absolute pleasure to watch. Thanks for taking the time to put together these videos.
Glad you enjoyed it, running out of cars now
@@AstillDesign do you have anything on the XY GT replica you picked up and did a little work on?
Not a lot of photos, I need to check
Absolutle beautiful build and again a credit to you Howard. The poor bloke next to you made the video look like he was a puppet in the calls and comments . But hey, ALL about the car. Well done.
He wasn't real well that night, lol
That was a great breakdown. Thanks Howard.
Our pleasure mate
The Cobra’s have always been one of the best liveried vehicles around. Up there with the Martini Porsche, Gulf GT40, Zacspeed Capri. Beautiful car Astill’s.
Thanks Jim. Your comment is oh so true
My friend from the central coast once owned this Cobra (#66). I helped him make the shock tower brace for this car. We had the specs taken from Cobra #24 from Western Sydney at the time back in 1988 .
Cheers mate, it was a good job too on the brace. Thanks for sharing. I had the opportunity to work on #24 as well
Yes I know. I've watched the You tube video. It was me that made up the Motorcraft decals for #66. We had taken the cobra to Oran Park for a few laps back then. The Cobra had a five speed gearbox then. I remember filling the tank with a high octane mix when a piece of the funnel I was meant to hold. fell straight down into the filler neck and into the tank. The diff centre inherited my 3:1 ratio crown and pinion out from my XB GT hardtop. I still own the GT coupe. I once owned a Bathurst Cobra #10. In 1996, we took my bonnet scoop to a fibreglass fabricator and made a copy for #66. The scoop was given a lower profile. We fitted #66 with a Bathurst type front spoiler and white B45 Simmons wheels. The driver's front guard was replaced after a collusion. I would love to have you guys restore my XB one of these days. It does need a full resto.
You certainly are a perfectionist Howard, what an amazing job. These series really highlight just what it takes to do a quality job and why they can cost as much as they do. It would be interesting to hear how you customer likes the Holley Sniper fuel system. The biggest disappointment and mistake I made with my rebuild was in fitting a FiTech system its junk ( in my opinion), 3 months and its still not running properly. Looking forward to the next build. Cheers Phil.
Hi Phil, not sure about this one but had a lot of feed back when we were building the car that all these style injection still need to go to someone initially to get things sorted as a base so they can then fine tune themselves. A lot of comment about oxy sensors and distributor setup.
FANTASTIC!.....Thank you Dale.Thank you Howard
Our pleasure
I had a top loader in my xd of the time and did the same alloy block for the shifter to bring the handle to the centre it was a Hurst Indy set up and worked perfectly
Thanks for the feedback
Beautiful job well done!
Thank you very much!
Another beautiful build Howard.
Thanks mate
Very helpful I’m building XB coupe at the moment great clips photos
Check out coolmint coupe, Blackman’s coupe and the other cobra
What a build. Always enjoy seeing a restomod because it shows the owner's and your design influences in addition to fixing factory "features." I have to say, workmanship and quality of the build aside, that engine alone is worth the admission price. What a beast. I truly hope it is still in good shape.
Hi Paul certainly was a nice build, I'm sure is is being looked after.
Another amazing Astill Falcon.
Glad you think so!
This is gold guys! Thank you. I currently have my XA blown apart and have the plenum off. Gives me confidence I have made all the right choices. I have also added the stepper cross member stepper plate and the V8 rad support. My car is a 6 with a 2V and a
I’m also converting to factory A/C. One owner in the family car.
Glad it helped! Nice to have some family ties
Re fan clutch's, these were P5 LTD, XC's never got them so not original per se, but hey' it's a resto mod car so why not. They came back with the XD's though. Great vid by the way. Having done a full resto on an XC Cobra, a while back now though, this brings back many memories.
Thanks for the info, It seems as though the XC a/c cars and outback pack and police pack cars had Clutch fans from the factory
Thanks Howard and Dale for another great video. How awesome was that engine on the dino.
Glad you enjoyed it
Nice one Howard you certainly do it right and superb 👍👍👍
Glad you enjoyed it
Thanks again Howard and Dale, this really has been a fantastic journey.I am still in awe of what you and everyone you work with have achieved and still achieving.I have, whilst watching your series’s come to realise that I don’t think there is enough gratitude given to guys like yourself for the work you do and what you have brought to the car industry.(PS How do you get hold of Ben at Global I need some seats for a ESP done, he’s a hard man to get a hold of)
If he is like me email or Facebook message
Absolutely Beautiful workmanship I just love it. I just wish I could afford to do a resto like that. Well done guys. I love that you are a perfectionist at the whole process. 👍
Thank you very much!
Good comment regarding Rare Spares - Same for Rotary panel bit god bless Phil’s Rotaries, as we would not be able to get a lot of parts to keep our cars nice
Right on
I'm sorry I drooled about this
That’s ok
Rolling art work! What can you say but amazing work👍
Thanks mate, appreciate your support
Incredible workmanship! What ever this cost, i would have been worth every cent! I'd send my rig to you if i had the funds!
Cheers Dean
Great vid Howard that come up mint 👌👍
Glad you enjoyed it, it sure did
Bloody awesome car and a beautiful build. Must say though I prefer the globe Bathurst wheels on the Cobra but the Simmons are a nice wheel as well.
Yeah he has both, lucky boy
@Astill Design As a rusted on Ford guy I love your passion.
Would love to see you guys do a Holden Monaro 😉
I think that opportunity has passed.
Beautiful resto ✔✔
Cheers mate
Hi Howard , really enjoying this build.
You mentioned about not doing to much to the brake booster, if you can cast your memory back say 30 odd years or more ago.
I worked for a company call Better Brakes , for ten years .they had services centers all over Australia , there was one division at Burrows Rd St Peters.
This was called the Remanufacturing Brake Components' Div, or RBC , where they had departments that reconditioned bonded brake shoes , master cylinders, calipers, and Brake Boosters.
I worked in the Power Brake Dept and eventually became foreman . I was too slow in stepping back so I got landed with the job LOL.
There's one main thing you need to look out for is the valve body which is made of Barker lite if dropped they can crack and that's when your day starts to go bad other than that there's the rubber diaphragm which can perish and this is common on old engines that dump fumes into the boost through the vac hose. we used to have test benched to make sure all the unit working after re building them .
We also used to have few celebrities call , I met Collin Bond on one action , he was picking up some brake shoes they where testing out with a new compound on them.
Anyway I thought you might be interested in that bit of trivia , keep the great work appreciate the time and effort you put in each week.
Thanks for the feedback, It's becoming a through away system more and more but these old cars we still need to rebuild them
@@AstillDesign Thanks for your time as per phone conversation this afternoon cheers
Love that car 😎👍
Sure was nice
That engine is different I like it
Thanks, always trying to please the customer and keep it looking ford
Amazing little of rust this Coupe has Howard my Hz is the same mate..
What a beautiful machine mate, credit to you and your staff..
If you did Holden's mate, I know where my Hz would be going, mate..
Thanks for the great content 👍 👌
Glad you enjoyed it
Great work, super nice. Rear bumper fit could be better. Prefer the globe wheels 👍👍👍👍
Fair enough!
Love it
Cheers mate, me too
I was just on a page saying they were selling brand new Clevelands off the US Ford Racing Catalogue.
That would be good if they are.
Love your videos Howard, I'm pretty sure there was something else I was supposed to do tonight, but i'm buggered if I can remember what it was now.
Your memory sounds like mine
Really enjoyed watching the built and show. Is the fuel tank xc only because I have one i want to put it in my xa .I know the tank is the same size and i know I have to do a few changes
It will fit, You will need to block off the pollution control lines and the fuel filler is slightly different
Hey hi guys, I’ve got an XA coupe that I’m about to start shortly. I’m only a back yard restorer but I have high standards. I intend to unpick and remove the rear quarters to get right into the car to repair any rust. I’m wondering if you have any videos of rear quarter removal and repair. I’ve done a plenum before so I’m not afraid of the quarters on my coupe. I just want to get my head around it before I begin. Thanks for your efforts
Jason
Jason have a look through the ASTILL design Facebook photo albums. Blackman’s coupe, cool mint coupe, cobra 400 all had the quarters off. There are hundreds of photos
@@AstillDesign oh yeah thanks so much mate… I remember the cool mint coupe vids.. I knew I’d seen one of your vids with a de-skinned coupe
Loved seeing this awesome build come together, I'm curious how you went about painting the window trim black? Would you mind telling the process and products you used. Thank you
HI, Trims are repaired, finished with medium scotch brite on the linisher, First coat PPG CF black epoxy primer, then black base coat, 2 coats of PPG satin Clear. all applied wet on wet
Thanks Howard, appreciate you taking the time to answer my question. Have a great Sunday
Im loving the cobra videos. Im not loving the wheels. But as you say it's not my car. I do find it funny how the globe style wheel just looks so good on a cobra. Or maybe it's just what I'm used to. Or maybe it is the little bit of white on the globes. Then I'm not sure I want globe style wheels on any other car. Choosing a wheel is a real struggle. I took a year to settle on convo pro. Im still not sure I got it right. Luckily it's only 20 wheel nuts and you can fix it. The real job is in the getting the car itself the best you can. Im not upset about the modifications to this car. I think just lifting up the mechanical a spec or two to everything is just a nice balance of angry street car vs drivability and ofcoarse the body work and attention to detail. In my eyes thats a perfect muscle car
Yes wheels can make or brake a car. In this case he had both so he could pick and choose.
The razor cutter is a tungsten block ..
Was this the engine builder that was recently killed in a accident ?
What are your concerns with spray filler?
That’s the one, tungsten.
That’s correct Sam Fenech
Spray poly just seem to fill everything including all the small details in the panels. The car looks fat.
To get rid of the bituminous residue or glue use a bit of diesel or acetone.
Why not try a NARDI steering wheel, to be different or a hand built Moto-Lita steering wheel built by the og builder?
Cheers mate
@@AstillDesign your welcome, I used to work in the tarmac trade and tested asphalt for 8 years.... Tested new stripping procedures, and the acetone to use is tolurene. Which as a odd fact is part of the TNT make up, and is one of the 'T' s of TNT.
I see why you do these build series vids with Dale.
Tell me more
Hi mate. When would you suggest I do my seam sealing. I have been told to do it before colour so I don’t make a mess while sanding primer. Cheers
I like to do it before the last coat of primer. It can be done before colour but I have never been game to try it.
@@AstillDesign ok thanks. I wasn’t keen on leaving until paint being a blue metallic.
@@AstillDesignanother question i have is, if I use a grey high build primer and rub it back to 600-800 wet for a metallic blue is that ok or should I use a wet on wet primer over the high build to put the colour on to. Cheers.
@@AstillDesign next question, would you use seam sealer or filler where the window frames meet the doors on an XC? Thanks
Seam seller
I preferred the original wheels myself
He has the option to choose
Howard it's called tungsten tip
not sure on what your referring
Hi there, love your channel
Any chance your interested in doing a Datto 1200ute? I got a A15 which has spun a bearing unfortunately not long ago now running A14 with twin dellorto carbs
If not I got a Datto 120Y 2 DOOR SEDAN NOT THE 2 DOOR COUPE. Goggle will tell you how many came to Australia, Fair as I know less than 30 are still alive
Sorry mate, if I do anymore it will be an x series ford
No worries then thanks for the reply back,
See you at the Nats when I get it done ✔️
Or catch you at the Rocky Nats Easter weekend if you're heading there?
It jogged my memory because I saw it in a magazine the other day, but Howard will remember this one - because he was on a magazine cover with it. The Orange FJ of Darryl Mcbeth in 95 is what got me noticing and respecting custom cars. And I noticed it had been on the market several times and doesn't have the blown motor anymore but whoever put the Flamejob on the front should be shot (and I will say this to their face) complete sacrilege!! I didn't know about the Magna he had gone on to do and isn't that a trick thing!
Hey mate, You must have been watching the Melbourne showdown video. Yes the Magna was pretty out there when it was done
@@AstillDesign No, actually I was looking for the FJ on a whim, because I had a pang of Nostalgia - and I saw a link for the Magna on the page I found, and went WOW naturally 😅 Darryll says he's pretty burnt out doing show cars after all these years and just wants to do his own thing now, which is understandable..
Why would you butcher something special like a Cobra. I just can't get my head around it. Excellent work gents.
The first 200 where 351 with the exception of #001, the publicity car that was a 302. #002 to #031 were the Bathurst cars. They evened out the numbers by making car #351 a 351.
Not for me to reason why, Yes was having a bad night on the numbers. Thanks for your input.
@@AstillDesignTo be clear. Didn't mean you Howard. Whoever put in the huge stereo and those gauges in the dash.
They should have given Farah Fawcett Majors one of these coupe's instead of the Mustang ll Cobra. Coupe's.
What do you think about this idea lol?
Sound good to me.
Yes, never been a fan of that spray filler used it once never again doesn’t have long Jevity?
Cheers Peter
XC Cobra for my favourite Ford car
Yes they are a nice thing.
Simmons were always the cheap copies of the beautiful BBS wheels. Most of Moff’s XB/XC’s wore these. You can still get them.
Oh so true
Hey mate. Watched you since I was a teen. My first car was an XA Superbird. Had 3 COUPES (😄) and many XA to XC's over the years. Suspension specialist...so I do hope you got the clamping force correct and tightened those U bolts down? The whole surrounding package on the leaf was critical to axle tramp and leaf wind up. Those added plates, I used to buy different pack clamp sizes from the wreckers, or manufacturer that plate. I have helped Mark King and his crew develop many of their products, and Graham at Fulcrum was a long term customer, Kevin from Kmac, Ron Pedder, andmore used our hand built items (a while ago now), because my business specialised in, and had early access to most day old vehicles for package upgrades, and specialised in reconditioning obsolete or making custom parts. If you ever bought 90/10's or 50/50 drag shocks, 80% chance I hand built them.
Travelling soon, would love to drop past if that's ok?
Hey mate shoot me an email on astilldesign@hotmail.com I would like to chat about the van and what I'm doing with that. We can work out a visit, Cheers H
