    • @SD40Fan_Jason
      @SD40Fan_Jason 3 роки тому +1

      @@rx7sportscar Usually knuckle breaks are the culmination of several different impact forces on the drawbar. I have personally seen knuckles that were ±90% broken for weeks or months even, and finally broke the rest of the way through with just the slightest force on an uphill grade. The last time I saw this, it was Car 78 of an 84 car autorack train, so there were only 7 loaded cars tugging on that knuckle, but it still broke. It was also a long walk for the poor conductor. Even if they had DPU in the middle or on the rear, damage like that would have gone unnoticed until it broke. It's probably a little less common between cars that couple and uncouple often but for unit trains and cars that remain coupled for thousands of miles, they may never know until the equipment fails.

    • @SD40Fan_Jason
      @SD40Fan_Jason 3 роки тому +4

      Probably not. Usually flat spots are caused when the wheel is stationary and dragged with friction force of brakes applied, rather than while moving and friction force applied. In other words, flat spots do not happen much when stopping, but they happen a lot when starting while brakes are applied. This happens often when conductors forget or neglect handbrakes. Just the same, any time a train has gone into emergency while traveling at a speed of 10 MPH or more, the equipment and the tracks have to be inspected before they get rolling again. If the track buckles or equipment fails, they need to know before it becomes a major hazard.

    If it bad train handling my engineer is about to do some walking. If its just a bad knuckle drop your knuckle on the ballast walk back to the end and turn the glad hand off so the air can charge. Once the engineer gives the ok and the air is charged and brakes released ride up get your knuckle. If its at night pop off some flares next to your knuckle. Shove back to your cut of cars and put your knuckle in. The easiest way keep an extra belt on you to hold the cut lever. Once you installed the knuckle walk back up to the cab and proceed. Yeah it sucks but MOW ain't always gonna be there to save your ass or your road foreman. If your a green conductor do it for practice. I promise you'll do it again, again, and again. As a conductor I've changed hoses, knuckles, angle clocks, shoes and so forth.

      Probably just didn't see it in the video. Though there were many hands on that equipment and 20-ish cars would take a while to bleed off enough to roll. Poorly maintained railcars even though they were on our line they would never pass a class 1 air test. I never rely on air. Ive seen a many conductors fired for not doing something simple as walking back and putting 2 or 3 handbrakes on a cut of cars. If the yard, road foreman doesn't get ya. The FRA definitely gonna catch ya.

    • @SD40Fan_Jason
      @SD40Fan_Jason 3 роки тому

      @@jasonbooth5182 yep I agree. I had a rock train in Texas that should've been decommissioned and scrapped 15 years before I got it. Instead we were using it to haul Rocks and rubble to the seaport. It took 15 lbs reduction to get any brakes at all and by the time the rear had a set the front bled off. UP said it was okay though and yet we had to keep using it. I didn't trust the handbrakes I really didn't trust the air. On a slight grade I was ordering the crew to put 30 handbrakes and then test it. I was glad to see it not ever come back.
