Where are you stuck in your drumming right now?

This might be completely trivial but I'm still having a problem tuning my drums for rock. Even went to the local Guitar Center and the drum teacher there told me it's all about my ear. Although I spent an hour with him playing around with a lot of different drums here. We did tune several there but he couldn't even get them in tune to what he thought he wanted and he was using a phone tuner. He could not really dial it in for me. If I want to play the drums like Angels to Airwaves sounds, on "Do it for me now" I'd like to know how they set up their tuning. You're absolutely right, I enjoy playing even though I'm just a novice. But when I can't get the drums in tune and it doesn't sound right it makes me feel terrible. We are emotional creatures. Just like you said. I agree with those statements... I'm still trying to learn that's why I'm on this channel.

Dealing with a mixer at church with only the one fader that has everything in it, which includes a loop I’m trying to play with. The last two Sundays has been sucking with the loop. Wish me luck I’ve put the loop on repeat for three days for tomorrow’s service to try to learn it so I can’t mess it up. It makes you feel like you suck during service even when you can’t hear everything in the headphones. It’s an African loop incidentally, and that’s not my background.

The thing I wanna fix the most is my feet then coordination. I need to work on everything but that's my biggest shame

"One of the fastest ways to get better is to figure out the component parts of a skillset and then find ways of getting more reps in less time."
As an. educator myself, ive learned how to figure out those component parts though my own experiences AND by also checking out the best of the best and collating and distilling the info.... you are part of that list of "best of the best"; no exaggeration.. i think you're a g.o.a.t. of music education.
idk if you'll ever see this but know that you've helped me to find my own voice as a teacher by the example you've set. I really appreciate your contribution to the wider drum community as a whole and more specifically to my life. Thank you Stephen.

I feel so much of this ❤ not sure about the mechanic analogy though lol if you've ever been in a shop where mechanics are having issues with stuck bolts, there's a LOT of emotion lol. And the air tends to be a bit blue 😂

A stuck bolt is nothing to get upset about. It's just a good excuse to get out the torch. 😏

I like your honesty and self evaluation. "Groove" is the most elusive thing. Zoro said it best " there's no better teacher of the groove than the song itself " . How did the great drummers get their feel? Is it God given? Listen to music that has the masters on the kit. Try to see as many of those drummers in person, so you can experience and understand "feel" better. I also believe in "back to the basics ". Pick some foundational rudiments and play them on a snare everyday with the metronome. Do they sound/feel good? Hows your touch? Study guys with great hands who know what it means to "stay loose". Study technique. Find some books with rhythms that challenge you on the kit . Rileys Bebop book is a good one. You will work on your swing and develop independence. "Play what you like, like what you play". Put some tunes on and play along with your drum heroes. This will help you better understand their "FEEL " . Another great reference is Daniel Glass. He digs deep into groove/feel and helps us all understand this elusive concept better

Hey Stephen, very good video! Very important. Pure gold and very good explanations. And the proof of how good it really is, you can see on the small amount of views... 😜😭 All the best and greetings! Jochen

Cool video. I actually just had one of these epiphanies. I thought I had done grid work with every limb pretty much at nauseum. What I hadn't done was practice playing ghost notes on all of the beats that weren't being accented with the left hand while playing an osteanato with my other limbs. I tried to play the first groove in your "advanced grooves" series and couldn't even get close. Now, I can work on that exercise first and go back to that groove later.

Hey, are you still playing with that gold iron cobra pedal

Thanks for the lesson. My question for you is when I am practicing, whatever that focus area is. I lose myself in what I was supposed to practice on and immediately seek out songs to alleviate the problem.
It isn't thar I don't want to practice but once I hit a wall, my brain is automatically thinking to play to music.
Do you have an answer that can help me gain better appreciation for practicing?
    Thanks
