    I Paid 'Pro' Drummers To Create An EPIC Drum Part For My Song! • I Paid 'Pro' Drummers ...
    Time for round 2 on Fiverr...but this time it's all about metal drumming! A metal song played by metal drummers with metal cymbals ;^) what can we learn by hiring 6 metal drummers on Fiverr to record their own interpretation of a metalcore song? Even if metal music is not your cup of tea, I think we can all learn a great deal by looking at what each one of these metal drummers played to this metalcore song..
    Some of my most valuable feedback and lessons learned have come from evaluating my drumming in a recorded setting, getting feedback from other musicians, and being willing to improve my playing based upon that feedback. As well, I can learn so much just by watching another drummer or picking apart their drumming. So, I wanted to create a Fiverr gig and use it in this drum tutorial. Fiverr gig marketing has become a great way for some drummers to get work...but what type of quality is there? In this video, I paid random drummers that specifically said they specialized in metal drumming on Fiverr to record a drum part to a metal song I had produced. Since I am hiring them, it's my job to play the part of the producer and evaluate what I think works and what I think doesn't work with each of their drum parts.
    Leave a comment below and let me know who you think played it the best!

      Hello there Kalonica, just watch your full version playing in your channel (good you did that). WOW you have talent!!! I'm amaze! You've mastered the drums in such a young age and as a former drummer myself, i must say you played much better among them which I believe much older than you!! You've learned a new lesson here, be more thorough! But imo if Stephen as a senior drummer had good intention he could increase the volume (not hidden your amazing drumming) and he would have the pride to be part of supporting you. Here another lesson you've learned to know people, some people might envy but remember good people does exist too. You have a very long journey ahead, never stop learning. In response to your comments on Kalonica's track, and something that would be helpful for the musicians you are hiring as well as yourself, don't ask for stems, ask for multitracks. If you ask for stems, (assuming the musician knows what they're talking about) what you'll get is a single stereo file of the entire kit. Multitracks are the individual raw tracks. Although you can ask for the multitracks to be processed as well. But if you asked her for the stem of the drum track, you'd have saved yourself a headache by asking for the multis instead.

      @rparas34 3 роки тому +26

      @@StephenTaylorDrums I agree 100% with that. My favorite take was the 1st because it fit the song. Sometimes drummers tend to over complicate a song and it doesn't work in both recording and live settings. The goal to grip a listener is to know when to simplify and when to spice things up. Perfect example is Ken Shalk of Candiria or Gene Hoglan of every metal band in existence lol. They both can go nuts but also know when bring it down a notch to let the song breathe. At the end of the day you do what's best for the song in a "Band" setting.

      I would've preferred more clash and bang over the tom rolls at the end, but otherwise it was the most kinetic and thrashy take. Amazing!

    Kalonica should have sent stems... But did she send you her drum tracks on their own, or did she mix everything and send you a final song with the music? I would hope she sent the drums separately (even though just stereo). If so, it wasn't her fault that the drum levels were too low. Where did the final mix take place?

    So, after working with many people on Fiverr, I learned early on that you'll typically get exactly what is in their "package description". For Kalonica_Nicx, she never offers to send full drum stems... only an "hq audio file". For $125 (which is her standard price for playing an original drum track), you'd expect to get stems, but you can't get mad about what is never offered in the first place. With her situation in mind... whoever mixed/mastered these tracks for you did a bad job. The entire point of this video is to show off the drum tracks, but all of the drum tracks were buried in the mix. If the guitar/drum volumes had been swapped, it would have made more sense. Also, there's no excuse for having Kalonica's drums so quiet in the mix. Mixing/mastering engineers need to do whatever is necessary to ensure that the tracks sound right (if possible). In this case... simply giving the drums a db boost would have alleviated the issue all together.

    • @StephenTaylorDrums
      @StephenTaylorDrums  3 роки тому +1

      Totally get your points. Let me give you some info:
      1. I communicated twice begore recording asking specifically for the stems in the final package. I also told them to give an adjusted price if they needed for providing those. However, after files were sent, to keep it fair to all, I couldn't go back to one without going back to all of the others. This time around I was SUPER clear on what was needed and what would happen with the final product.
      2. The initial mix turned in did have all of the drums boosted. I requested they be brought down so it sounds like music instead of a play along/drum cover where the drums are intentionally boosted. You will find that on most of these types of vids I do, that is the approach. My goal is to emphasize music, not just drums. The song, in the end, is the goal.
      3. We leveled out all of the mixes when mastered so there was a consistency. When you're working with 5 tracks that have individual stems vs one track that is a stereo of the entire song, it gets tricky. Kalonica is an amazing player and I loved what she did.
      Hope that clarifies a bit!

    • @mr.nervedamagegaming8050

      @@StephenTaylorDrums Thanks for the extra info. If you had reached out to her, and she agreed to send the stems but didn't, that's definitely an issue. I guess that ultimately, I still have difficulty wrapping my head around the concept of leaving her mix (mostly) inaudible in the final master. Unless she only sent you a mixdown of the drums *and music as one file (I'd be pissed), it seems like it would have been fairly simple to boost the volume on the single drum track in the mix. I do that with demos from my drummer all the time while I'm waiting for the full stems, haha. In regards to the rest of the mixes... it truly is one of those scenarios where mixes are quite subjective, haha. If I were just guessing from the mixes, without knowing the point of the upload, I would have assumed the guitars were the focal point. It's all good... I would have just liked to hear the drums a tiny bit louder than normal... especially on hers. I checked out her page and she does some great work. I could never see myself paying someone that much for a single drum track, especially for only a single file, but talent wise she sounds like she's worth it. Also, random, but I had instantly assumed that James was the $300 work, haha... he did phenomenal with the track, as well as the video.

    • @StephenTaylorDrums
      @StephenTaylorDrums  3 роки тому +1

      Oh, for sure. His track and video were next level. We didn't get in to the audio file side of things...but he sent a final mix that could have been used. And that was only $100.

    Let me just say...all of these drummers did amazing takes. On a normal session, we would have done one round of adjustments and punch ins and any of their takes could have been used. Really happy with all of the players on this one.
    As a drummer, some of my most valuable feedback and lessons learned have come from evaluating my drumming in a recorded setting, getting feedback from other musicians, and being willing to improve my playing based upon that feedback. As well, I can learn so much just by watching another drummer or picking apart their drumming. So, in this video, I paid random metal drummers on Fiverr to record a drum part to a metalcore song I had produced. Since I am hiring them, it's my job to play the part of the producer and evaluate what I think works and what I think doesn't work with each of their drum parts.

    This is very cool...BBUUTT!!! There is a multitude of jobs going on here it seems! 1st)There's being a DRUMMER....wich is to be expected ok....2nd)There's being an engineer, you gotta mix your own shit! 3rd)Or really second, is your your own PRODUCER cause you've gotta decide if your gonna do samples, what mics, preamps, compressors your gonna use, etc. 4th)Your a VIDEOGRAPHER you gotta film your project, figure out how to use some sort of video program to make all your shots line up correctly, which I have no idea how to do. Can use Pro Tools, Cubase, Reason, Live, FL Studios, etc. to mix and record your audio, but video I tried with 3 different programs, and couldn't figure it out! Spent 3 yrs messing with it and still can't figure out how to edit a video to make it line up with my audio track! Can't even figure out how to get the audio track off of the video, export it into ProTools to redo it and add my own spice to it, then re-Import back into DiVinci or HitFilm and line it up with my video! And I've been doing audio work since the 90's so you'd figure it wouldn't be too hard to figure out! No siree! Still have no idea! Just saying! Oh and Mixing is it's own artform, and THE MOST IMPORTANT one as you can take a TURD and make it sound fucking awesome! Or make it sound like a monkey taking a dump! Lot's of hats!!!!
