It's the "JoJo" rig. "All" you need (not that this is cheap/easy to acquire, lol) is a "black" label Boss OC-2 Octaver pedal with the OCT 1 knob all the way up and the OCT 2 and DRY knobs all the way off. That gives the synth tone. The filtering (being controlled by an expression pedal) is being done with a Moog Moogerfooger Low Pass Filter pedal. Although an Iron Ether Xerograph can also be used in that role. Although, they're also pretty expensive and difficult to find, lol. He's also likely using a touch of some kind of overdrive or distortion either from a pedal or his amp. That though is far less crucial to acquiring that bass guitar sound than the Boss OC-2 and Low Pass Filter pedals. If you get those, any decent drive will do.
@@AnodyneHipsterInfluencer how did you figure all of this out? :0 that’s awesome, thank you for sharing, I’ll visit back when I have time to buy more bass equipment. Focusing on getting a drum set for now
@@KD-vg2yn It's a known commodity in the JoJo Mayer community. He's made all the bassists who've played with him buy a Boss OC-2 and a MoogerFooger Low Pass Filter. Thank me later after I show you how to use them."
it’s always so rewarding watching Jojo play - someone with decades of both instrumental mastery AND complete dedication to the practical and philosophical advancement of percussion and music as a whole. we don’t deserve Jojo.
Saw Nerve at the Halifax Jazz Festival many moons ago. As a Drum and Bass fan I was blown away - who was this guy who could play all those insanely fast grooves on an actual kit? Amazing....
Jojo is great and we know. Though what is not pointed out is that the group is great. The total result is beautiful. Jacob Bergson and Aaron Nevezie are the ones taking me back to time of old school when dnb had musicality. They are bringing back the memories of dnb of the 90's which is unique and unforgettable!
I've seen this tune played live a few times and it's different every time because that's the way Nerve operates, with all the improvisations. Good stuff.
I remember watching Jojo at the drumming festival when I was a younger kid. I recently ran back into his work and I’m blown away and going on a jojo mayer binge 😂😌
His kit is so cool and unique. Really love the way he uses those BT-1 bar triggers. Seeing them live was so so so good. I went into knowing nothing about them. A drummer friend took me because he had an extra ticket and I was so so grateful that he did. I had heard of Jojo and seen him in drumming magazines but had no idea about what kind of music he played. I didn’t see he Pearl syncussion replica. Also he only uses a Roland TM-2 module, so mind blowing. I’m surprised Why he wouldn’t want a TM-6 pro for his kit. It would have much more control over his sounds, direct sound outputs, be able to layer trigger sounds with acoustic drums
No he's not! He was born the same year I was: 1963, on Jan 09, he's 59 now. I'm 58 it's Jan 25 2022 today. That was filmed in 2020, when he was 58, and he doesn't look a day over 57! Daaaaaaaaaaaaang! Are you like 10?
Got to see them live at the Ardmore in PA and they set up with each member in a different part of the room so you could stand behind Jojo and walk around and watch each musician individually. It was really cool and Jojo put on an absolute masterclass. Got to smoke a cigarette with him after the show, super dope.
go back and watch his Modern Drummer appearance in 05'. ua-cam.com/video/2VSGSFWagl4/v-deo.html It's an amazing performance but his clinics are quite informative too.
His hands DVD and foot dvd are the only dvds u will ever need....i promise if u practice what he shows you everyday....u will be 10x a better drummer then u are now...but EVERY FUCKING DAY EVEN WHEN U DONT WANT TO...WORK ON IT...
When you close your eyes, you wouldn't be able to tell if the drums were real or electronic, played by a human or just a drum machine much less if it were live or recorded. That's what Jojo is.
Also, I imagined the rimshots while they werent' audible cause fuck the lack of sound, I know how Jojo does the do and it's a little better to know he left us with such confidence in his abilities that we can totally musically hear his actions though not audibly. This is the quality musicianship I adore. The sound engineers, errrrrrrrr- Thank you for trying your best to capture one of the best D&B drummers ever?
Jojo's and nerves music is sending me to the shoulder of Orion and the Tannhäuser Gate since 2005. (its when i got to know about this band from Modern Drummer Festival 2005)
She played great in her own sense and interpretation of the beat. However, I liked the video because of her message and her testimony at the one of it 👏🏼

Bringing drum and bass back to drum and bass - simply amazing
Yeah better to have a real drummer
This is Jungle! ☝️🙂
his ghost notes are simply amazing. everything about his playing is amazing.
Too bad that the snare is gated so hard that you can't really hear to nuances...
@@phasesofperceptionmusic what? what are you hearing
@@phasesofperceptionmusic even then, its electronic music, what else did you expect
@@spitgorge2021 Just the gate on the snare mic is pretty hard. So you can't hear all that tasty ghost notes. For example @2:55 the rim clicks are gone
The hits are there, but ghost snare notes are all about that human touch.

He's insane. Another dimension.
With jojo I wouldn’t have gotten to see Matt McGuire slay it with the push pull technique 😂
Yeah dude, I gotta learn that push pull technique from you guys

Jojo is like fine wine
the coolest electric bass sounds I’ve ever heard in my life
He's triggering a synthesizer, you are not hearing the actual bass.
@@Bob-of-Zoid Why wouldn't they just get a key board player in there. Seems more likely he would just apply filters and effects to it.

Man those three hits twice on bass drum at 1:44 were just so insane.
Jojo was really ahead of its time. "Why compete a drum machine?" I asked myself 22 years ago. Now I get it....
Human drum machine. I love the mix of acoustic and electric drums in his setup. That electric left pedal really works well for the bass lines.
💯💕💕
He is still getting better. Beautiful touch.
Hell yeah. Saw nerve live in Atlanta back in 2019. Still one of the best live shows I've seen
Masterpiece. His drum kit is his dance floor. All about technic and musicality
That's probably the best synth bass tone I've ever heard come out of an electric bass
Heavy phaser, heavy enveloper, auto filter… sounds like they took a heavy synth effect and modified it to suit the bass
oc-2 + phaser maybe something else
Jacob chillin' in his professorial turtleneck. What greatness!

I met Jojo at his clinic in NZ years ago, amazing guy! And seriously one of the greatest players in the world. A true honor
Woah a hospital for drummer? Nice
Great creative and technical drumming! Jojo Mayer has an irresistible style by looking like Disco Stu after 30 hours of no sleep..
This guy is pretty good. I hope he makes it big one day.

Jojo is gonna be 90yo still playing sicker break beats than the new kids.
MorbidManMusic Again Hmm. JD is more Chris Dave than Jojo in my opinion. Either way JD is indeed a badass. 🤘
Noah Bird seconding that. i also think jojo is a far more nuanced player than JD, but that’s to be expected given the gap in experience.
