I became addicted after experiencing 3 family deaths in a 3 years, using gambling as an escape instead of grieving and dealing with my emotions. I tried to self-ban myself and was told the person was not there, to come back the next day. This is against the Gambling Commission's rules and ultimately they were fined when I called the State Board. They sent somone to help me complete the self-ban form. I have not gambled for 7 years. Casinos prey on the older ,lonely and isolated. Senior groups who take buses to casinos are not doing those who are addicted or prone to be a favor. It is a growing problem that is not talked about enough.

I was thinking the same! They put a certain amount they'll gamble in the machine. Towards the end, as the money runs out, they win back the amount they put, essentially gambling the same amount forever until they pass. Sort of tricking them.

I drive a casino bus they have fun they run every 2 to 4 hours during the day. Older people are just like anyone else you have to be responsible with your money.
I am 86 years old and drive 1200 miles to Las Vegas to gamble once a year. When I can't drive to Vegas, it means that I am not capable of gambling either. I am smart enough to play only craps with 20X odds and $5 minimum. I quit when I lose $700 or win $1700, whichever comes first. When I win, it is a free vacation and when I lose, I debit it as a recreational expense. When my brains go, it's time to stay home.

What people fail to recognize is many of the seniors in these homes could have been teacher's, doctor's, lawyers or a decorated veteran. If they want to go, let them go! They paid their dues! However, in the elderly care facility they should also have weekly meetings about addiction and ensure the elderly have a set budget. All they really want to do is escape, be with friends and feel a live and young again. I gambled many years and speaking from experience. Family that abandon a person that goes to the casino, is just upset that when they pass they're not going to get their money. Here in America door to door service would have casino owners and transit CEOs rolling in the aisles. Here you pay between $30 - $40 to get to casino and back. When you arrive you get a bonus depending on what casino you frequent. Usually its between $25-$35 dollars. That's not anything to get excited about, the slots (pokies) eat that up immediately. There no food vouchers. Our casinos make sure you "pay to play". The perks only come to you after the cash comes to them first.
Not enough is being done. So true. The cost of transporting people means they indeed become captives for as long as the casino designates. And don't worry about running out of money. you're right, they should target 20year olds and middle aged people. It's well-know that those people have a ton of free time during the day on weekdays (between 9am and 5pm)... and North American population is getting younger. Gambling has a lot of similarities with drinking. Most people can enjoy a glass of wine with dinner or enjoy a beer or two at a ballgame and it's not a problem at all. For others, they don't know when to stop and drinking destroys their family, career and health. I enjoy playing poker once or twice a month but I only buy in with chips I can afford to lose if things don't go well. Most players at the table are the same way but I've seen some that clearly can't afford to be there. When those players lose it's a bit disturbing to see their anger and dejection because you know that they're going to have to beg, borrow or steal to make their rent payment that month.

I think gambling at casinos as an activity foisted on elderly and disabled people in independent living facilities is just plain wrong. If this is such a fun and harmless activity, why not take kids in summer camps to casinos on school buses and gamble using their weekly allowance money? When you have a captive audience with limited capacity for being able to get around on their own and reduced mental capacity to think through what they’re doing before they do it, what you’re doing is stealing from them. It’s why children aren’t allowed to gamble. No one would ever suggest that gambling for kids is fine as long as they don’t gamble beyond their financial resources and attend courses on how to curb their gambling activities if those get out of control.
An elderly member of my family got hooked on to gambling thanks to those brain-sucking slot machines; became so financially unstable and blind due to the addiction, that she desperately sold the family homestead to pay her debts without consulting other family members. This action made my relatives upset and till this day they hold a strong resentment to her for giving away our family's heritage -built & set by our ancestors. Nobody is willing to take care of her now that she's older, she still gambles and spends her pension asking others for more money, and takes antidepressants to cope with the abandonment of her loved ones.. This makes me very sad because this issue creates a lot of conflict between my family, no one wants the responsibility of dealing with a selfish and narcissistic being like my grandmother. Any advice?
Indeed the casinos are targeting seniors -- the young -- the old. Older people get to still have some fun. The problem is people who spend too much. I go to Casinos all the time. And we have mostly elderly on our plane trips. I see the older ones playing, but never big, they can set in front of a penny machine, etc.. for hours.
Here's an idea for a senior. Pace yourself when you get to a casino. Play a little. Get up and walk to get lunch. Play a little more. Get up go to the bathroom. Get back. Play a little more. Get up and go watch the band play a few songs. Never sit in front of one machine for 5 hours straight. It usually will zap you.
Lottery is just a "hidden tax" on the poor. The odds are clearly stated but people still plunk down a couple bucks just to be in the running. I can't blame or fault anyone who buys lottery tickets or plays the Lotto but obviously they aren't buying with any expectation of "really" winning, but are instead buying Hope. I became addicted after experiencing 3 family deaths in a 3 years, using gambling as an escape instead of grieving and dealing with my emotions. I tried to self-ban myself and was told the person was not there, to come back the next day. This is against the Gambling Commission's rules and ultimately they were fined when I called the State Board. They sent somone to help me complete the self-ban form. I have not gambled for 7 years. Casinos prey on the older ,lonely and isolated. Senior groups who take buses to casinos are not doing those who are addicted or prone to be a favor. It is a growing problem that is not talked about enough.

I am 86 years old and drive 1200 miles to Las Vegas to gamble once a year. When I can't drive to Vegas, it means that I am not capable of gambling either. I am smart enough to play only craps with 20X odds and $5 minimum. I quit when I lose $700 or win $1700, whichever comes first. When I win, it is a free vacation and when I lose, I debit it as a recreational expense. When my brains go, it's time to stay home.

What people fail to recognize is many of the seniors in these homes could have been teacher's, doctor's, lawyers or a decorated veteran. If they want to go, let them go! They paid their dues! However, in the elderly care facility they should also have weekly meetings about addiction and ensure the elderly have a set budget. All they really want to do is escape, be with friends and feel a live and young again. I gambled many years and speaking from experience. Family that abandon a person that goes to the casino, is just upset that when they pass they're not going to get their money. They should be ashamed of themselves and happy their loved one is having fun once a week. Again, in moderation.

Here in America door to door service would have casino owners and transit CEOs rolling in the aisles. Here you pay between $30 - $40 to get to casino and back. When you arrive you get a bonus depending on what casino you frequent. Usually its between $25-$35 dollars. That's not anything to get excited about, the slots (pokies) eat that up immediately. There no food vouchers. Our casinos make sure you "pay to play". The perks only come to you after the cash comes to them first.
Not enough is being done. So true. The cost of transporting people means they indeed become captives for as long as the casino designates. And don't worry about running out of money. The ATMs are ready to charge you big bucks while you drain your account in the heat of a gambling fever.
I recently saw that a female attorney who has emerged from a rock bottom gambling addiction is going to sue the casinos for not taking responsibility or even recognizing the role they are playing in producing this gambling epidemic.

People still need to be accountable. SOME may lose control, but they still decide to step onto a bus to go to a casino. If their retirement homes were actually in the casino or maybe physically beside one, then your comment may have some merit. These casinos are not a simple bus ride away, it can be 1.5-2 hrs ... one way.

It's well-know that those people have a ton of free time during the day on weekdays (between 9am and 5pm)... and North American population is getting younger. Gambling has a lot of similarities with drinking. Most people can enjoy a glass of wine with dinner or enjoy a beer or two at a ballgame and it's not a problem at all. For others, they don't know when to stop and drinking destroys their family, career and health. I enjoy playing poker once or twice a month but I only buy in with chips I can afford to lose if things don't go well. Most players at the table are the same way but I've seen some that clearly can't afford to be there. When those players lose it's a bit disturbing to see their anger and dejection because you know that they're going to have to beg, borrow or steal to make their rent payment that month.

I went on the fun bus (senior citizens bus) to the casino. They are at the casino for 6 hours before the bus returns. A lot of older people have nothing else to do so they spend their social security money.
I actually know ken, his situation is a lot more complicated than just being broke. The wife and kids have merit to leave! But ken himself is still one of my favourite people, and i look up to him!

I think gambling at casinos as an activity foisted on elderly and disabled people in independent living facilities is just plain wrong. If this is such a fun and harmless activity, why not take kids in summer camps to casinos on school buses and gamble using their weekly allowance money? When you have a captive audience with limited capacity for being able to get around on their own and reduced mental capacity to think through what they’re doing before they do it, what you’re doing is stealing from them. It’s why children aren’t allowed to gamble. No one would ever suggest that gambling for kids is fine as long as they don’t gamble beyond their financial resources and attend courses on how to curb their gambling activities if those get out of control.
An elderly member of my family got hooked on to gambling thanks to those brain-sucking slot machines; became so financially unstable and blind due to the addiction, that she desperately sold the family homestead to pay her debts without consulting other family members. This action made my relatives upset and till this day they hold a strong resentment to her for giving away our family's heritage -built & set by our ancestors.
Nobody is willing to take care of her now that she's older, she still gambles and spends her pension asking others for more money, and takes antidepressants to cope with the abandonment of her loved ones..
This makes me very sad because this issue creates a lot of conflict between my family, no one wants the responsibility of dealing with a selfish and narcissistic being like my grandmother. Any advice?
Indeed the casinos are targeting seniors -- the young -- the old. Older people get to still have some fun. The problem is people who spend too much. The person (Ken) is absolutely right -- you get to be with friends, not be sick, etc. If you bet minimum, then you can still have fun. Gambling Addiction is another problem. I am DISABLED .. I can play baseball, badminton, volleyball etc. I can hobble around the casino -- make some money, lose some money (more than I win). They money goes back to the Ontario government. Tou don't live long.
I go to Casinos all the time. And we have mostly elderly on our plane trips. I see the older ones playing, but never big, they can set in front of a penny machine, etc.. for hours.
Here's an idea for a senior. Pace yourself when you get to a casino. Play a little. Get up and walk to get lunch. Play a little more. Get up go to the bathroom. Get back. Play a little more. Get up and go watch the band play a few songs. Never sit in front of one machine for 5 hours straight. It usually will zap you.
Lottery is just a "hidden tax" on the poor. The odds are clearly stated but people still plunk down a couple bucks just to be in the running. I can't blame or fault anyone who buys lottery tickets or plays the Lotto but obviously they aren't buying with any expectation of "really" winning, but are instead buying Hope. No wealthy people (that I'm aware of) play Lotto or other games with millions to one odds. Sell "Hope" to the poor just to shake a few more bucks out of the poorest taxpayers..

I can confirm that on weekdays (non-summer period), most of the clientele in casinos are all elderly.

Since government is subsidizing casinos, then the government should give seniors a kind of subsidy for entertainment they can use for anything they want, to keep them from getting into depression due to isolation or abuses from their caregivers or just from being idle all day and I bet there will be a lot less lonely seniors. And happy seniors means healthy mind and body.

We go to the casino twice a month as a way to get away from "dead people" at our family funeral homes. Went yesterday and I remarked, I've been dodging walkers and wheelchairs all afternoon. I do worry about them not being able to afford being there.

I did not see one person being "dragged" Yes you can get an addiction but very few people do. I don't belong to any old folks home but I do love to gamble and I am 67 years old. I pay my rent and my bills and then I go gambling. I wont save my money for my kids or grandkids. I have kids that love to visit me. Not like the gentleman in this video where his kids don't want to have anything to do with him. I would think those kids were already selfish in the first place. I wonder how many kids would come to him if he happened to get lucky and win millions. I am so sick of people thinking because you are over 50 you no longer can think or yourself.
Iam 74 yrs old I just came from micho picho I spend 45 grand with my friend since we were children she to is a widow ! She like a sister to me! Her parents were well off only child so we are happy ! That's what I expect from all people. Adults shouldn't need hand-holding, especially by a government through regulatory action. Casinos are popping up everywhere now, but you don't have to go to any of them. Marijuana is legal in more places around the country every year, but you still don't have to puff if you don't want to.

AND of course, u CAN meet MORE people n make MORE friends!
