I was the manager of possibly highest turnover gambling pub in Kings Cross Sydney for some time back around 2010, and can honestly say I felt disgusting reconciling the pokies each morning. Some mornings after a busy 24 hour period from friday to saturday you could have up to $200,000 - $300,000 between 30 machines, sitting in cash in front of you, its hard not to feel ashamed of yourself... but when reporting figures to those above (like the guy from clubs nsw or whatever), its NEVER enough! Just take a look at how gaming rooms are run compared to the public bar... tray service, complimentary softdrinks and cakes, hot foods brought around at certain times with promotions every Tuesday and Thursday. All they care about is keeping people sitting in these rooms cut off from the world around feeding the machines every last cent. People don't understand how badly these venues manipulate their patrons and drain their pockets.
Thank you for this comment. I'm so disgusted by the people who think it's 100% the gambler's fault. They obviously don't understand anything about addiction and how the human brain works.
It is the gamblers fault, 100%. They are in the position they are in because of decisions they made. Not decisions other people made. I'm so sick and tired of people not taking responsibility for their actions. It's always somebody else's fault, You're not getting ahead because of racism or you are obese because there are fast food restaurants in every corner. This is all bullshit, you are simply making bad decisions for yourself.
Yes I also hate how gambling is becoming more and more accessible if that’s even possible at this point. I’ve struggled with addiction, not gambling, and people in my family have struggled with that as well as depression and committed suicide, so I understand the mindset. I hope that Texas never legalize casinos, I mean we have three within three hours but there’s horse racing already and poker rooms have started popping up, and we already have these “game rooms”
The worst part has got to be when 'the big jackpot' isn't enough close to enough anymore. I used to put money in machines that with max bet paid a max of $500 per spin. Lose a few hundred and that super rare max win wont even break you even after not so long. I couldn't imagine being behind hundreds of thousands, no bonus will be big enough at some point.
Also if you lose money you can get into that vicious circle of chasing your losses but compounding it further by losing more. But yes the wins are what keeps people going and thinking they can get that win again
The thing is, is to have the DISCIPLINE so the minute you hit.....you need o WALK and CASH in. That's how I do it. If I don't hit in 10 to 15 minutes. I walk. I get bored easy with gambling.....
@@DEE-o4v easier said than done with majority of winners ,new or old, establishments, the machine design's are made to help some type of hypnosis when you play, so it's actually wiring and briefly brainwashing you, alot of money is spent specifically in that by the machine designer's and creator's,my brother's one
I'm 34 years old and went to a casino for the first time in my life last year. i've seen all the depictions in movies, the glitz, glamour and energy, but when i walked into this particular casino (a fairly big and popular one just outside of Toronto, Canada) it was just full of people (mainly older) who looked sad, desperate and depressed. for a place that is supposed to be "fun", it felt like no one was having any fun at all.
My affair w/ casino blackjack gambling: * Won $70 in Tahoe * Lost $800 at the Horseshoe * Lost $500 at the Rio * Lost $250 at the San Reno * Lost $300 at the Gardens No more gambling for me..
Same. The scratchies almost had me. I won $170 1st buy, lost $60 2nd, won $100 3rd buy, lost $30 4th buy, and then lost $200 5th buy. It's strange how true it is, even for scratch-offs, they hook you early on but in the end you lose.
They are just capitalizing on our “microwave” society. People have no interest in building wealth over time. They want the quick, big payout without having to put in the sweat equity. These gamblers always think they have a strategy to “beat the system” even when they know it’s rigged against them. I don’t gamble for this reason.
I took my daughter to the casino when she turned 18. I gave her the same amount as I gave myself and left the rest at home. I am not a gambler at all, but decided I must give her exposure to this while I am there to guide her. After about 15 minutes she came to me asnd said "Mum, these machines are taking all my money, lets rather go and have a milkshake." She is now 39 and I think she never went to a casino again.
Yep, My second job was in a pub in Liverpool, I was 18. I play them occasionally with My Brother, only ever leisure dollar. I've seen the other side of it, what comes out at end of the night... all those miserable faces walking out used to hurt My soul.
the first ten times over a couple of years, that I got dragged along to the pokies by my friends, I thought they were soooo boring. Then next thing I knew I had an addiction that has made me want to kill myself many times over twenty years. Now I am like the lady in this story - I know I just can't enter a pub or a club.
That’s what happened to me. I lost $90 in a matter of minutes. I was so upset I just threw away that much money. On the last pull I won $96 and walked away quickly lol. I was happy to leave up $6. I’ve never gone back to the casino 😂
I know only too well about problem gambling. I first got hooked on pokies in 1973, and spent the next 45 or 46 years a slave to gambling. I would estimate I lost well over a million. I had a good position in an office with the rail way in NSW. Job was gone in a few years as I was helping myself to money that was not mine. I had a criminal record. I ended up gambling online and the stock markets. I in the end had to declare bankrupt. Spent my last months unable to work and totally penniless. I am now greatfull to be almost 5 years clean. I am on a pension and get by and manage to save a little. I am not against gambling. I am also an alcoholic, now 33 years sober. No one says ban alcohol. People are allergic to Strawberries. It would be ludicrous to ban strawberries. I know gambling and alcohol are not for me. I feel for those with a problem with any addiction. Thank you for this story.
Pokies are all about fooling the mind and robbing you of your money. It would be easier winning Powerball than willing a $1000 on the pokies. The old mechanical pokies had fixed odds. But when Ainsworth stopped manufacturing them at their Rosebery factory and started introducing computerise pokies on the unsuspecting public with odds of one in a million or 50 in a million and plus their introduction into Hotels destroyed the casual drinker/punter and unleashed a toxic addition that only benefits the few at the pointy end of town. The 3 legal addictions are alcohol, cigarettes and gambling/pokie machines. You can only consume so much alcohol and cigarettes a day, but pokies with waste all your money and all your time. Reintroduce the mechanical pokies and limit them to a 20-cent coin per spin. No flashing lights, no sounds and a maximum payout of $100. That will fix the problem.
At 6:56 the interviewer asks "If 95% of the population can use them and not get hooked, why ban them?" The guy being interviewed essentially answers that because 5% of them can't control themselves, so the other 95% shouldn't get to play them! THAT IS ABSOLUTELY RIDICULOUS!!!
@@halettebrennen8460 That is ridiculous because 24% of the population is under 18 years of age and they can't use them. Because of Government regulations, those under 18 years old can't even buy cigarettes and alcohol. If it wasn't for the 5% of the 7% of the 76% of the adult population that is addicted to pokies, the Clubs and Hotels would close down. Many Clubs closed down after the Hotels got into pokies, too much competition. So approximately 1 in 400 adults supply the majority of the money that subsidises the clubs, hotels, and casinos so their non-addicted patrons can have a cheap meal and channel $Billions of Dollars to their owners and into State Government Revenue. It's far easier to buy a restricted pokie licence from the government and see rivers of cash flow into your bank account. Just like cigarettes and alcohol is available in every shopping centre, pokie machines should be available too. The local Newsagent and the cafe should have a pokie in store so a customer can try their luck while waiting to get served. If Competition benefits the consumer, let all the shopkeepers have a chance to make an easy dollar. Maybe the novelty of the pokie-machine addition will wear off when they are on every street corner.
Here’s some advice from personal experience. Don’t know how it is in other countries, I’m in the US. I was 22 years old and looooooooved playing poker. Best thing I did was get a job at a casino. It did a few great things for me. It turned what I love into a job, so it became more of a task than a pleasure, I was not allowed to play at the casino because I worked there and I was exposed to all the horrors that this world can lead to. I play maybe once or twice a year and I have a completely different view of it.
He is sponsored by the gambling giants they pay his wages of cause he will say pokies any gambling in general is not addictive pokies machines are made too get you addicted too them even with the music they play and the lighting of the machine help do that basically brainwashing the victim's CIA and black ops government organisations all around the world used the process now the pokies machines makers are using the same principles into making people think they can't live without playing pokies every day every of every waking moment I have seen it first hand and been addicted too pokies people become pokie zombies where you will rather put money in the machine instead of paying bills or buying food every cent you have goes in the pokie machine.
If you actually breakdown the numbers, the 5% with addiction problems actually feed 90-95% of the total revenue proceeds. If they were to assist/help the problem gamblers (i.e. compulsive gamblers), then they would lose 90% of their revenue! It is an absolute shame they would rather exploit people than help them!
Most of the therapists I know who work in addictions won’t take a client with a gambling addiction and will refer them to a specialist in a large practice. It’s the addiction with the highest suicide rate, and of course, most people don’t seek help until they’ve lost almost everything. Online gambling has made everything worse.
Yeah you can't even watch a sports game anymore without an advertisement to bet on the game through a sportsbook. Plus it's so easy to deposit you just login to your bank account and click deposit. No matter how hard I try I cannot keep myself away from online gambling. I wish it was never a thing and only land based casino's/sportsbooks existed. It's every month taking any extra money I had plus some bill money if I go too far.
@Yizee I'm pretty addicted to online gambling myself. I ended up going over all the apps and signing the self exclusion papers. Set deposit limits and so on. Has worked pretty well
@@hindukushdestroyer yeah I need to do that myself. It's hard when there's overseas online casino's that don't really let you ban yourself cause htey'll just let you reopen the account if you wanted. So it's tough. Have to have self control.
@@Yizee Thank God here in Italy gambling advertisement is completely banned, because otherwise it would've been way harder for me. And also, but I'm sure this applies to other countries too, you can self-exclude from gambling sites and it takes 6 months after you decide to remove the self-exclusion to be able to gamble again. For me that meant that when I felt the urge to gamble I had to wait those 6 months, and after 6 months of being unable to play I just didn't feel the urge anymore and I would self-exclude myself again immediately. Unregulated overseas casinos are almost inaccessible from here, so I never even have tried to play on those. Now I don't gamble anymore and thanks to my wife and children my life is great again, I feel extremely lucky I eventually was able to come out of that black hole.
@@orfeoassiti6669 Sorry for getting back so late. I self excluded myself for a year from sportsbook gambling sites but now I'm back to casino gambling sites. And these are overseas companies where you can't really ban yourself. It's too hard to ban from everything. It's a monthly struggle for me probably for the rest of my life.
My husband is a pokie addict. If it weren’t for me hiding money, we’d starve and be homeless. On the other side of things, he banks on me doing so. It’s madness.
I had to end my marriage with my wife because of these pokies. I had warned her that if she ever had an addiction to gambling that would be a deal breaker... I would have stood by her through anything else... but not this..
Fuck the algorithm. I admitted I am a gambling addict and that I'm powerless over algorithm/ gambling..AND I give it to my higher power. Continue to take inventory over my addiction .one day at a time and live my best life
11 years gambling free but I’d been gambling for 25 years prior on & off. Now a full time Artist. You can overcome this disease, with self belief, support & always think that there is a way out no matter where your rock bottom is. Life is the answer, people will help you. One day at a time.
I ran a hotel for 18 months. The hotel had terrific meals for cheap prices, cold beer for low prices, free music jukebox, free pool tables, and great friendly service. If people needed more space or wanted some privacy, I had other large rooms that I would open up to accommodate their needs. And my hotel had ZERO poker machines. I refused to allow them in. And my hotel was relatively a ghost town, while the hotels with poker machines were crowded all day. Lots of people - including potential customers - put a lot of pressure on my to put in a Pub TAB and a room of poker machines, but I stood my ground. And lost a hell of a lot of money as a result. So much for the good guys ...
It's a business. Guests could have drinking problems, but drinks were still served. Guests could have eating disorders, but food was still served. If guests want entertainment in the form of machines, why not give them the choice? It's not about being good or bad it about allowing adults to make their own choices and about making smarter business decisions.
@@TheDatingLab Fair comments. I was just saying that I provided what so many problem gamblers say they want - a hotel without pokies or any other gambling options - and they never patronised my business. They all continued to go down the street to nearby hotels with rooms full of poker machines and Pub TAB. At the end of the day, of course it is their choice. But problem gamblers say one thing and then fall into their usual habits.
I'm from the US in Oklahoma where we've had casinos on native lands for decades. This is a SERIOUS problem in parts of our community. You can walk into these casinos and see people seemingly glued to the same chair for hours, punching buttons mindlessly, absolutely hooked. From where I sit right now, there are 10 different casinos within 10 miles.
Here in Oregon it's state sanctioned so bars restaurant s and game rooms are everywhere. I live on the coast and also have two casinos in a town of 20,000 people
Here in the Australian state of NSW, we have about 10% of all the poker machines in the world. We don’t have to travel 100 miles to an Indian casino, we can access them a few hundred yards away at the nearest bar.
These machines are all over the world .They have one aim to make a few fat men rich at the expense of hard working innocent people. One day in the future they will be banned when decent people rise up & take power. Vampires.
Perfect addiction - you win you want to win more...you lose you want to win back what you lost - it Never ends until you destroy everything that's important in life
Going to Casinos gives a high adrenaline, excitement to win, then when losing, you are going back to take a chance to get back the lost money. That that is the beginning of losing everything.
I doubt that you are an addict, because that is not the story of most addicts. Most addicts make excuses to walk in knowing they are unlikely to win. Most addicts spend their winnings straight away if not the next day. I used to walk in just hoping I wouldn't lose too much - but I nearly always lost control once I went into the trance and emptied my bank account. I have to have a very strong mind driving around my own city because here in Australia there are pokies on every corner begging you to walk through their filthy, evil doors.

Im just 19. I lost my business to gambling and ive probably lost close to 10k (thats a lot for a freakin 19 yr old). It destroyed my life starting at 18. Im trying to let it all go but with all the online casinos and enticing deals and promotions that come with them its really hard to let go. Gambling is definately the worst thing to happen to me
I'm 19 as well and have waged around 50k in my life, and it has ruined a part of my life. The most I lost in a day was 4.6k, and I honestly couldn't function for hours after just wanting to take back those bets. I work as a bartender right now as im in school and knowing I just lost that money that would take me a few months to get back was so hard. It made going to work feel usless because I just wanted to win it back at the casino. If you are reading this, have people keep you accountable; even if its hard to tell people about the shame that comes from gambling, it will help.
I am 21, and was into gaming when I was younger. At 13 one of my friends told me about CSGO, I put $50 in bought a knife and discovered gambling the next day. I worked up the courage to try it out and had the run of a lifetime on csgoreaper doing coinflips. By the end of it I had 6,400 in skins and cashed out through OPskins using BTC. The total amount was 4.5xxx BTC worth around 1,200 a coin at the time. When I look at that transaction today it says $4xx,xxx…
My first time outside Western Australia as an adult , it astounded me how little room there was in pubs for anything but the stupid bloody pokies . no pool tables. no darts boards . front bars that couldn't hold more than 20 or 30 people. but hundreds and hundreds of pokies . I'm so glad I live in the only Aussie state NOT to have them in pubs and clubs. What a sad thing 😔
I won $5000 on a quarter poker machine. That was when the problem really started. Thankfully, the first time I lost our rent money, something kicked me in the head and I immediately went to the gaming commission and had myself banned. I still went at times, but I knew if I won big, because my name was flagged in the system, they wouldn't pay me. I was limited to winning $200, I think. Any more than that and I would have to sign my name and be subject to prosecution for trespassing. That took the joy out real fast. I haven't been near a casino in over 10 years now. Insanely, though, sometimes I really miss it.
I feel your pain. That's why I did similar to what Marie in this blog did. I took my son when he was 21 to Vegas and gave him $100. He lost $100 of it and I told him I would give him ANOTHER $200 and he could keep the additional $200 or gamble some or all of it. He decided to keep it. And my eyes lit up and I told him I was proud that he made the right decision and explained to him that I took him to Vegas for the very reason of teaching him that gambling is bad. It's been years now and he has never gambled since.
“Thankfully the first time I lost our rent money” lmaoooooo 😂 nothing to be thankful about that! If I was dating someone who can afford to waste money on casino, it’s over. It’s one thing to ruin your life but to drag others into your hole, that’s a whole lot of different level. 😂
I’ve worked in pokie venues for 15 years, the worst part about the whole thing is the reps for the machine manufacturers. There’s a gaming convention every year in Sydney and they bring the managers of high turnover venues from all across the country and wine and dine them and pay for flights/accomodation.
Australians calling poker machines "pokies" is one of the best things I've heard this month. It's the sweetest, most charming thing I've ever heard. It's as cute as a kitten's meow. I love Ozzies so much. They're such a silly funny bunch.
My father has a saying “control as many of the variables as possible.” I went to a casino once with a friend, lost $50, and thought, “fuck that” I hate losing money I hate being out of control and over stimulated. My family says I thrive in chaos, and I do, when it is of my own making. I genuinely feel bad for people who can’t stop.
I have family that I grew up with that had gambling addictions and its a major problem. So many people don't walk into a casino understanding that you need to spend what you're able to afford to lose. When I gamble on the slots I only spend $100 dollars and I bet $1.50-2.50 on the penny slots and if I dip below $60 I cash out and leave. The biggest issue with gambling addiction is always thinking you will make the money back that you lost
I own an old Mills "Black Beauty" slot - all mechanical.......that thing does pay out every now and again...but not all the time. And yeah...I'm bored by gambling frankly.....If I don't start hitting within 10 minutes....I quit.
I went to vegas for the first time last year and it was my second time gambling. I can totally see how people get hooked on these machines and games. I kept getting this feeling that the next time I hit the button would be the hit where I would actually win. I "won" $50 after 4 days of light gambling, in reality losing all the money I set aside for gambling during the trip and came home feeling absolutely used. I won't go back to a casino again because I already have an addictive personality (13 years sober) and I would rather spend money on things worthwhile instead of a conglomerate that doesn't give a crap about its customers. My heart goes out to gambling addicts, it's legitimate.
when you are defeated on these machines you get this thought "they should ban these pokies".. the best insight of the pokies but only the victims see this... disgusting
What people don’t realize is those machines are Scientifically designed to stimulate your Dopamine receptors, they use all sensory inputs, to include sight, sound, touch, and in Oklahoma, they serve free soda, as well as allow smoking. According to my research, the worst thing that can happen to you is to win a fairly large amount, and the more times you win even small amounts, in affects your reward receptors, which will start to make you crave for more stimulation to get the same feeling. It’s like any addiction, but I feel gambling may be worse, as it affects all your sensory inputs. I thank God every day, that I’ve never won enough to keep me at the machines. The Risk Reward is Not there for me! ****It’s sad that 60 Minutes did not bring a Mental Health Expert in to explain this!!! 🤔🤔🤔🤔🤔🤔🤔
You are absolute correct they purposely are made to manipulate the brain I've watched a documentary where designers ask the companies what percentage they want them to pay its nearly always the very lowest - they have many games now with the perception jackpot sizes and other gimics don't effect how they pay and play and that's so misleading with a very tiny one line which is a play on words written somewhere on them. I fail to understand how it's allowed many other products that mislead you and prey on your powers of perception are deemed illegal when challenged these things have free reign it's disgusting.
I’ve been addicted to all the common stuff, cig’s, alcohol, buying shit, every kind of drug, etc but NEVER have I enjoyed gambling. I’m so grateful I never felt that rush with gambling.
Unfortunately I had really good luck the first time I gambled . I had 40 dollars and I tried roulette. I kept winning and said to myself . Okay I'm at 220 if I go down to 200 I'll stop then when i got to more money id say the same okay im at 480 ill play until 450. The problem is I kept winning until i made 1400 dollars . I was so lucky. That's what got me hooked
@@Gabewindsor the worst thing that can happen to a gambler is winning the first time they play. Hooks you line and sinker. People need to understand that just cause you have a lucky streak and win one night, doesn't mean you can do it all the time
I lived 3.4 hours from big Casinos and I became addicted going my first time with an ex-girlfriend. I won a $4k jackpot and I was hooked. I spent a lot of my free time driving back and forth because of the hope of winning big again. I lost a lot and moved back to my home town further away to start over. Well unbeknown to me there was a casino across the border 1.5 hours away and I fell off again. But years later I got tired of loosing and no longer had the desire to go. Just don't step foot in casinos because you never know.
I think that’s the same problem with me. I’ve hit a couple of jackpots with one being $6000. It’s that pull that you can do it again. But in truth I’ve lost way more than I’ve won.
You should always go to casinos at every chance because you never know.....if you will win big or not until you try! You can see big wins in every casino every day. It really happens.
as a poker machine gambling addict myself for over 10 years i can assure you this video is 100% correct "the more you play the more you lose". my recommendation is if ignore the machines, but if you cannot then see it it as a little bit of fun, if you spend $20-$50 and win 2x-5x more then *LEAVE RIGHT NOW* because it is downhill from there, the machine will slowly drain your winnings and the longer you spend there you think you are almost going to win something, you think you are entitled to winning at this stage so you keep putting more money in to get that "entitled win" or at least get your money back, but you don't.
anyone know what the piano song is called at 3:20 ? Its also used in The Assasination of Jesse James but Ive never been able to find the piece by name.
Look up "Song For Jesse" on youtube, it's track #03 on the soundtrack. I love that movie... just about crapped my pants when I heard it in this video lol...
Just watch next they'll be banning gambling videos on social media this crap has to stop 🛑 and I don't mean the pokies I mean governments telling people what they can and can't do who's that saxophone think he is
My sister was a problem gambler advisor. It was amazing the number of broken families due to this addiction! I don't understand why the government gives licence to this 'entertainment' that splits families apart and causes a lot of addiction and homeless in countries that could otherwise flourish. It's a sad state of affairs
The government gives it licenses because it brings in revenue.... Surprised you didn't think of or consider the revenue for gambling businesses and government
@@aquariusthompson8212 I know they do! This is really just a “bribe” so they can continue to make a huge profit from those too weak to help themselves.
Similar to why the government doesn’t ban painkillers even though some become addicted and lose everything. The vast majority of people who have gambled or gamble today aren’t addicts who lose everything. I’m 31 and go to Vegas often. I’ve lost about 50k total and that’s over a 10 year period. Is it bad that I lost that much? Sure. Did it destroy my life? Not really since it’s usually a fun time. If I didn’t gamble, I’d probably be spending that amount of money elsewhere. When u go gamble, set a limit and have the will power to stick to it. Easier said than done but definitely possible
@@lynette599 ya that’s an easier example. Kinda crazy how both political sides hate the government yet then want to include the government in everything
As an American it's crazy to see almost every pub has slot machines, not a surprise there are so many problem gamblers. I have a casino just a 20 drive minutes away, but knowing I'll likely lose is enough to keep me from going. But if there were big jackpot machines at the bar down the street, I'd be tempted.
There are little slot parlors in every strip mall every bar and restaurant and the gas stations here. Mix in the title loan and payday loan places and you can see why the mob had to go. Just like the lottery the tax is imposed on the poor and those poor at math.
I've seen them everywhere in LV and MT it can be difficult where I live. But I'm happy to control my gambling, try not to at every bar, and never let myself spend more than $40 so I don't get into any addiction. It can happen to anyone and I'm glad this video spreads awareness. Also from the USA❤
Yea some dude that owned a store around my way had a couple machines in the backroom. Me and my dad would play all the time and I was kind of hooked on it but never played much money. My dad gets hooked on stuff very quickly, he passed it on to me lol. He got caught though and they took the machines away. If they had them in every store I’d definitely be tempted if I had time to kill. They’re fun to play but you have to know when to stop! I saw 2 friends get hooked in gambling in front of my eyes. They would go and bring a certain amount, but as soon as that was gone they would ask to borrow money or use the expensive atm in casinos! The withdrawal fee is like 15 bucks!! I would see them gambling and they weren’t having fun anymore. They were riding that rush you get when you win or lose, and they didn’t even know it. I knew it was bad when they dropped me off, took a shower and went right back! It was a 2 hr ride! I know they told themselves, let’s just go us 2 so nobody can stop us from playing more. One of them won 5 grand one night and the next day it was gone! I don’t speak to them any more but I bet they’re still gambling. The crazy part is, they SUCK at gambling lol. One of them got into poker the same time I did and he had no idea what he was doing. He would go play every weekend though, getting cleaned out by any decent poker player. Poker is one game that you can win with skills! That’s why the same people show up in the final of WSOP.

I was at a pub recently having a beer, I watched a mother and daughter win 13k on a pokie machine. The minute she won and was paid out, the first thing she did was pump more money into the same machine. I'm not sure if it is stupidity or an addiction or a combination of the 2. Crazy.
Covid and gaming rooms closing over that period was the best thing to happen to people addicted to the pokies, although I guess they just transferred that addiction to online gambling.
are you kidding me? I know SOOOOOOO many people in recovery who started out of boredom because in Canada EVERYTHING was locked down so people would just pump money into online gambling. It's what set the addiction in motion for me too... Still struggling to this day to snap out of it.
I'm in California and glad we don't have online gambling. We have tons of Vegas style casinos and I love going but it does scare me. This hobby can turn into an addiction very quickly.
No one does that. You min bet until you lose 3-4 in a row. Then max bet until you hit. I’ve been doing that for years. Sure I’ve lost $25K, but that would easily be $100K if I didn’t use my strategy!
I'm even beginning to think that buying lottery tickets, sports betting is the newest form of addiction. My coworkers go ham every Tuesday just scratching and losing! will be doing it all again come Friday. Imagine putting the money aside they could be debt free or a quarter of a million dollars richer by the end of the full year its crazy . Granted you do win sometimes but you're still losing more than you'll win
@7:40 That guy never understand because he never touched those machines. To be able to identify the severity of the pokies, you must play and experience in order to judge how destructive these machine to the psyche of the player.
I think a lot of people have had a stint with playing the pokies, putting those wins back in and thereby seeing it all for what it is. It's a mugs game. Years ago I had a little taste of the addiction because just like they said in this story, you get drawn in with big wins at first, then slowly start losing it as you chase "the big win". Over a couple of months I won about $4000 and then put it back in, so luckily that experience turned me off playing the pokies. So now rather than thinking about all the money I could be winning, it feels much better thinking about all the money I've saved from *not* playing. I do feel bad for these people who are terribly addicted to pokies, but at the end of the day it's supposed to be a free country and no one's forcing them to play. Like all destructive addictions, they have to admit they have a problem and make a decision to seek help.
By that logic, some people enjoy crack and no one is forcing you to smoke it. They have to admit they have a problem and make a decision to seek help So then why not legalise crack?
The only place one can gamble pokies in WA is in Casino. No pub or clubs allowed to have legal machine. Hopefully it helps the WA residents in problem gambling.
What will turn the addiction off is the acceptance of the realisation that the pokies are not machines where you can win money, until then its all a delusion. I spent years around pokies but my brain came to the natural conclusion of no profit gaming and sitting there by myself tapping a button, seems a little crazy. I never play or want to play the pokies, you are just lining the pokets of the elite few who own and run this scam.
My great grandfather was a compulsive gambler, he gambled all his life savings away and if that weren't enough his marriage broke down, he even went so far to pawn off his eldest sons (my grandfather) belongings just to get more money to gamble with, my grandfather always told me and brothers to never gamble and we always stayed far away from anything to do with gambling even lottery tickets.
I am a recovering alcoholic with over 2 1/2 years of sobriety now. I never understood gambling and was never tempted to try. But I will not point fingers at those with a gambling addiction. We are all addicts to different drugs and stimulation's. I am no better than the next guy, and might even be worse.
Am a compulsive gambler and I don’t understand people who drink alcohol can’t stop after one drink, I guess what I trying to say is you’re right we all have different addictions😞
There was an English politician, cook, raconteur and all-round interesting guy called Clement Freud (grandson of Sigmund and brother of Lucian), who was a gambling addict. I saw him in a documentary he did about his gambling back in the 80s. He claimed that gambling addicts don't want to win; they want to lose. He said that when you've lost far more than you can afford to lose, you initially feel gutted, but underlying that feeling is another one. 'I'm alive, it didn't kill me. I can carry on.' I don't know if that's true for other gambling addicts. I'm just remembering the story.
I got into a relationship with a gambling addict, for many years he justified it to me, it ruined our lives and yet he couldn't stop. I loved him dearly but after 10 years together believing he would give it up, i had to throw in the towel and walk away. I sat with him many times and watched him cry hysterically when he lost it all over and over. Its not about the money to them in all honesty, its the rush and high they get from it that matters, the consequences are you lose everything. My ex went to pokies with his grandparents and parents as a child, family arcades. He was around it since a very young child. Its very sad.
Although this is an old episode the problem gamblers are still gambling on the poker machines. For years I was the same, and spend hours of the day gambling. I tried different actions to trick my mind in to avoiding the machines. After attempting suicide my Doctors changed my antidepressants. My Son bought an online poker machine game. Then one day the obsession for these machines just stopped. As I walked in to the gaming room to play the pokies. The room was full of people the same as I was and I left. My addiction to the monsters was over. The people interviewed need help as the constant desire to play them is a living hell.
I am so happy for you that you were able to innocence get sick of it. I’ve struggled with a different type of addiction and I’ve acted out a little in the last few years but overall I’m done with it and I know it’s more of a choice now because it doesn’t really feed the same parts of my brain. Thanks to a great therapist, myself trying, running marathons, God, teaching middle school history and my best friends I was able to finally get to this point.
@@clayscloset2618 , something in your mind says ; I hate to be controlled by this. I have not spoken of this before. I wish the very best for you . God bless you .
There are actual methods to fighting this addiction. Self-banning is the best place to start. Then continuation of support groups are highly encouraged. It’ll never go away. It’s always waiting for you to come back. It’s cunning, baffling and powerful
Back 10 years ago I had a gambling addiction to these machines. I must of spent 30-40k. I finally got a grip and haven't played since. I do get the urge from time to time but I moved to a city that doesn't have them and I no longer go to casinos. It's an addiction.
@@KimJilene I moved away from Portland Oregon to a state that doesn't have poker machines or casino's. I don't go to Vegas anymore and online gambling doesn't do it for me. Stay away from the atmosphere.
The government will never ban poker machines or tobacco, they get too much revenue from them. They care more about their next pay rise than your future.
My friend spent £15,000 on slots over the last two weeks, went through all his savings and now he's at rock bottom and he still won't stop. I've stopped commenting on it to him as he turns it on me. As his friend it tortures you to see someone voluntarily throwing their life away.
Like all compulsive disorders, these problem gamblers are not attracted to the game but the fear that if they don't play they will miss their opportunity to win the big jackpot.
I had an uncle who used to run drugs.. Once every 6 months twice a year- for YEARS… He had a modest higher blue collar life, kept one job his entire life working on a farm a 9-5 , 2 weeks vacation a year and a wife and 3 kids. Just picked up and dropped off- He told me one day, if people would buy the Hell out of strawberries I’d run strawberry’s, if they bought The hell out of pineapples I’d run pineapples. His model was, if not me it’s him or You- Do I contribute to mayhem and Chaos , deaths and robberies? No, I contribute to peoples needs. Bless his soul, he was the hardest working man I’ve ever known. 47 years at the farm. All in all I understand what he said to me, moral of the story, Never get high on your own supply-
Right. Because addiction is a disease and is defined by the behaviors the addict exhibits surrounding the addiction. Once she fought the addiction, she got her life back. Why are you shitting on her? Isn’t this what we want to see? People getting their lives back on track and in order, even if only for the young children that depend on them?! What’s wrong with you?
I’m assuming you think she’s on top because her child is on top of a horse? Looks like her second husband is 20 years older. Don’t worry she pays for it in other ways, just like any other one else in similar situations. You’re welcome to do the same 😂
She obviously had a wealthy husband. To blow $1m, not all of it her money, and still walk away with a beautiful rural property of her own. They were loaded.
Hats off to those interviewed ! Takes allot to admit and tell others in warning of the slippery slope ahead if gambling begins to become predominant in ones life. Cheers from Northern California ! Same story half way around the world ! Overall , responsible Governments are in place to protect society as a whole not just profit margins for the rich to get richer! Regulations are crucial for a prosperous healthy society . These casinos should be thankful that they are even aloud to operate in the first place .
I can relate to this! I was a long haul truck driver and I would plan my breaks around the available casinos. I lost thousands of dollars over a ten year period! I finally did a trial. If I felt the urge to stop and play I would instead take that amount of money I was going to gamble with and put it aside. When I got home I would buy some sort of tool. Now I have any tool I will ever need in my retirement. Very hard habit to break. I was always trying to just get back even.
I remember as a schoolgirl we had a chippy near us that had a poker gaming machine. One day me and my dad were waiting in line to get served and we noticed this man playing, putting money in and ultimately losing and started cussing at the machine but eventually sat down at a table, then my dad asked if I wanted to try and gave me some money. I never played anything like it before and didn't know what to do, I shouted over to dad and he said just put in a coin and pull the lever and I did. That one pull won me the jackpot and everyone in that chippy cheered except the man who lost before me. The next thing I knew I was on the floor and the man was dragged out the door and beaten up by my dad other men and I was told that the man had pushed me to the floor and tried to take my winnings. To this day I still have horrors watching people play away their money for in an instant they can and will turn on anyone no matter who you are even a little schoolgirl. These people need serious help.
My ex blew millions in them. Still at it 30 years later. She’s down to nothing and can’t stop. Trance is the right word. It’s a drug for these addicts. I find them boring, 5 minutes I’m done with them. It’s a brain chemistry thing. I did a lot of research on this. Bad addiction
I go to the casino in America and it seems like you are in a trance especially when you are winning. My husband and I was doing good and we lost track of time and didn't realize we was there for four hours.
The first guy said he spent hours infront of these pokie machines and only lost 600 hundred dollars for me thats a good night I could lose thousands in 3 hours
Far more damage is done due to alcohol addiction but these people trying to ban the gambling are not trying to ban alcohol as it’s something they want to consume themselves.
Its one of the biggest things I noticed moving out here from the UK. Pokies machines and 'vip' sections everywhere. No surprise there's such a widespread problem

All interviews should have people hooked up to a lie detector and a car battery. That especially goes for corporate types and politicians. Watch them jump around and you'll learn the real truth from them.
I feel so bad for these people. I go to the casino maybe once a month or every other month and get a room there. To me it’s a nice little vacation from home for a night. Food, drinks, leisure gambling on the slots. I have never been addicted to them but have been going for years as a form of entertainment. I can’t imagine what these people are going through.
People go and spend all their money in one night as soon as their wage comes in. Some go every day to spend 100$. Just going once a month doesn't mean you are not addicted. As long as I only spend a tiny amount of my money it's okay for me.
I'd seen people addicted to mystery boxes on Facebook games, it was pretty sad. They lost so much money. I think a certain type of personality is more susceptible to gambling addiction.
Years ago, my then girlfriend convinced me to accompany her to the casino. We arrived, I signed up for my entry to the world of gambling, lost half my pay check in ten minutes and that was the first and last time a casino will see me playing slots. I play poker for money, both online and live and it's definitely more skill required than luck. I'm nor condoning it as an alternative though.I will never get myself into debt over gambling. I do understand addiction and I urge all who struggle with ANY addictions, to seek help.
Mark, as a former professional poker player myself who succumbed to Gambling Addiction I remember saying every word out loud that you have posted here yourself. The one thing I never realized until it was too late was that just the simple act of placing a wager on anything causes chemical changes in our brains like water causing erosion on surfaces. I knew the mantra and stayed away from Slot machines during a cash game poker "career" that saw me fulfill my financial obligations almost entirely with poker winnings while slow brewing a devastating addiction to action chasing for 15 years. Once I did start playing slot machines it was Game fkin Over and everything I build was toast. I couldnt get away from them and I couldnt play a single orbit at a poker table without wanting to chase slot money Gamblings Gambling. It's a drug at worst and dysfunctional thinking at best.
Myself and 2 mates attended the opening of the Burswood casino. We all played with $20 only. I played the 20c pontoon machine and won $60 from a single coin by rolling it over. Cashed out and went home. Never been back since 😂🤣😂🤣
The scary thing is that there are now online casinos that advertise here on UA-cam. I wonder how gambling addicts and vulnerable people react to it. It is terrifying to contemplate.
I'm here after hearing about a coworker picking up extra shifts to feed their addiction; he drives 40 mins every single day after work. 'Indian gaming' casinos are growing and expanding in Northern California and I keep hearing people casually talk about losing a few hundred dollars like its nothing.
Damn, I feel guilty spending 5 dollars US every once in a great while whenever the Lottery gets extremely large... I cant even imagine dropping these huge sums...
My brother was a casino manager. What people don’t realize are the slot machines aren’t random. They are programmed to take a certain amount. State law requires the casino take a certain percent. So payouts and jackpots are paid out when the casino is over the percent that they have taken in.
@@briansefring4981 my brother was literally the manager of Harrahs. That players card you enter is so they can keep track of the money you’ve lost. Once you’ve lost enough, they’ll come over and pretend like they don’t know what’s going on and then comp you a bunch of stuff so you can lose more. They literally have smart phones with everyone’s data. And like I said, the slot machines aren’t random. You think every time you pull, it’s random? No it’s programmed. Just like a scratch off ticket. You don’t even need to scratch it off. You can just check if you won or not. Those people playing slots or scratch off who were just one away from a big jackpot, put in more money. You’ll win next time.

The thing with gambling is no matter how much you win it is never enough, and no matter how much you lose it's always too much.
Winning a billion trillion dollars is enough. It would make winning or losing any amount after that irrelevant.
@@stant7122That has to be the most pointless comment ever
Like alcoholics ones too many and thirty ain’t enough.
I get what u mean. I work in a pub with pokies. 99% of people who win big aren't that happy, they say "well that just about covers my losses"
You nailed it. It's that immediate rush and the inevitable crash that's the hook. It's called intermittent reinforcement.
They are going after you…..
The worst thing to happen in pokies,is if you have a big win, that's how it hooks you in , you forever chase that win again
Also if you lose money you can get into that vicious circle of chasing your losses but compounding it further by losing more. But yes the wins are what keeps people going and thinking they can get that win again
Then u chase the money that u have lost and it never ends
So true, I once hit the jackpot in pokie machine and since then I'm hooked.
The thing is, is to have the DISCIPLINE so the minute you hit.....you need o WALK and CASH in. That's how I do it. If I don't hit in 10 to 15 minutes. I walk. I get bored easy with gambling.....

Thank you for sharing. Congratulations on turning your life around!
Maybe the novelty of the pokie-machine addition will wear off when they are on every street corner.
how though? they are as boring as 5h1t
I love how he said he believed that addressing problem gamblers wouldn’t affect profits. It’s both a lie and not realistic

Oklahoma is looting money from Texans with these casinos
Here in Oregon it's state sanctioned so bars restaurant s and game rooms are everywhere. I live on the coast and also have two casinos in a town of 20,000 people
Here in the Australian state of NSW, we have about 10% of all the poker machines in the world.
We don’t have to travel 100 miles to an Indian casino, we can access them a few hundred yards away at the nearest bar.
These machines are all over the world .They have one aim to make a few fat men rich at the expense of hard working innocent people.
One day in the future they will be banned when decent people rise up & take power.
Vampires.
Lmao i remember driving there from Texas and the first thing i was greeted with after crossing the border were acres of casinos

My heart goes out to these people. I'm a 22 years sober recovering alcoholic, and I think I'm a lucky one. Process addictions are so much harder in so many ways, especially gambling and sex. I hope these folks can stay sober and get their lives back.
Im just 19. I lost my business to gambling and ive probably lost close to 10k (thats a lot for a freakin 19 yr old). It destroyed my life starting at 18. Im trying to let it all go but with all the online casinos and enticing deals and promotions that come with them its really hard to let go. Gambling is definately the worst thing to happen to me
You can do this🩷, you have such a long time ahead of you to live a life free from gambling.
you're only 19 though, you have a lot of time to make up for it
i hope your doing better these days
The truth hiding in plain sight!
Why did you do that. You could have just walked away. How did you win 5000 did you get a royal flush.
@angieangiel2666 a few months back, I sat next to some lady who won 10k on a poker machine. It does happen, for sure.

Depends on the Australian.
When they first started calling them “pokies” I was thinking they were talking about video poker, not slot machines.
Scottish people call them Puggies
They don't sound devastating to lives, families for sure, calling them a Pokie.
wait til you hear what they call electricians
Years back I solved my addiction to a certain slot machine by buying one to play at home. Got bored by it quickly and it solved the problem.
Interesting, stay strong !
Not a bad idea for people
I own an old Mills "Black Beauty" slot - all mechanical.......that thing does pay out every now and again...but not all the time.

Look around you at vegas. For many people, pushing the button one more time is the win. Learn to gamble smart, like they do.
when you are defeated on these machines you get this thought "they should ban these pokies".. the best insight of the pokies but only the victims see this... disgusting
I worked at a casino for many years and witnessed the heartache of these machines

Well put. I agree
100% it's the win that kills you not the loss
You are so right about that. It is really sad.

But in truth I’ve lost way more than I’ve won.

as a poker machine gambling addict myself for over 10 years i can assure you this video is 100% correct "the more you play the more you lose". my recommendation is if ignore the machines, but if you cannot then see it it as a little bit of fun, if you spend $20-$50 and win 2x-5x more then *LEAVE RIGHT NOW* because it is downhill from there, the machine will slowly drain your winnings and the longer you spend there you think you are almost going to win something, you think you are entitled to winning at this stage so you keep putting more money in to get that "entitled win" or at least get your money back, but you don't.

Similar to why the government doesn’t ban painkillers even though some become addicted and lose everything.

It’s happened to me, it’s sad and shocking for others. Horrible addiction
The government will never ban poker machines or tobacco, they get too much revenue from them.
They care more about their next pay rise than your future.
So true.
My friend spent £15,000 on slots over the last two weeks, went through all his savings and now he's at rock bottom and he still won't stop. I've stopped commenting on it to him as he turns it on me. As his friend it tortures you to see someone voluntarily throwing their life away.
It is addictive especially when you winning. But you need to know when to stop
Addiction , he is chasing losses now
Lol I play with a cap of £150. The rest is profit money. Once I lose that it's done.

Like all compulsive disorders, these problem gamblers are not attracted to the game but the fear that if they don't play they will miss their opportunity to win the big jackpot.
-"There's no warning light telling you 'Have you fed the kids? Have you paid the bills?'"
Most of us call that warning light "common sense".
All in all I understand what he said to me, moral of the story, Never get high on your own supply-
I wish 60 minutes here in America was true journalism like this
They just did a report on horse racing, doping and gambling this month.
Hard hitting journalism. Gambling is bad. What a fresh revelation😂
She stole money broke up her marriage hooked another Mug and still ended up on top, unbelievable.
You’re welcome to do the same 😂
@@silentblackhole Dont be stupid.
She obviously had a wealthy husband. To blow $1m, not all of it her money, and still walk away with a beautiful rural property of her own. They were loaded.
She's pretty, and the geezer seems happy. What do you care?
Such a brutal addiction. Im sure the guilt and the shame is unimaginable...
Reporter - "When people lose hundreds of thousands or millions of dollars on your machines does that affect your bottom line?"
CEO of Clubs Australia - "No, I don't believe so"
Reporter - "So when people give you money it doesn't make you richer?"
CEO of Clubs Australia - "Many have an alternative view but no, I really don't believe so"
All interviews should have people hooked up to a lie detector and a car battery. That especially goes for corporate types and politicians. Watch them jump around and you'll learn the real truth from them.
It's an addiction and it's terrible, but like cigarettes and alcohol the govt. does very well in tax revenue. Poker machine reform is needed now.
So you've been going for years but not addicted?? DENIAL😂😂😂
@@davidvincent9545 do you know what addiction is?
People go and spend all their money in one night as soon as their wage comes in. Some go every day to spend 100$.
Just going once a month doesn't mean you are not addicted.
As long as I only spend a tiny amount of my money it's okay for me.
Every video on gambling addiction portrays it as something stupid that "they could never do"
I'd seen people addicted to mystery boxes on Facebook games, it was pretty sad.
I couldnt get away from them and I couldnt play a single orbit at a poker table without wanting to chase slot money
Gamblings Gambling. It's a drug at worst and dysfunctional thinking at best.
Myself and 2 mates attended the opening of the Burswood casino. We all played with $20 only. I played the 20c pontoon machine and won $60 from a single coin by rolling it over. Cashed out and went home. Never been back since 😂🤣😂🤣
Smart man
The scary thing is that there are now online casinos that advertise here on UA-cam. I wonder how gambling addicts and vulnerable people react to it. It is terrifying to contemplate.
The ad that played before this video for me was Ladbrokes. How's the irony?
I'm here after hearing about a coworker picking up extra shifts to feed their addiction; he drives 40 mins every single day after work. 'Indian gaming' casinos are growing and expanding in Northern California and I keep hearing people casually talk about losing a few hundred dollars like its nothing.
A few hundred is nothing
Wife and I lost $300 playing a slot machine back in '83. That was the end of our gambling career. We never once played again.
Damn, I feel guilty spending 5 dollars US every once in a great while whenever the Lottery gets extremely large... I cant even imagine dropping these huge sums...
There is two types of people that play machines, people who hate it and the people who love it so much that its as bad as drinking or smoking.
My brother was a casino manager. What people don’t realize are the slot machines aren’t random. They are programmed to take a certain amount. State law requires the casino take a certain percent. So payouts and jackpots are paid out when the casino is over the percent that they have taken in.
wrong.
Ur dumb.
That's bullcrap, they are programed to pay a 87% usually over a long period of time but the payouts are random, r.n.g operated,!
You are a liar and never worked at a casino with that take.

"honestly I can't understand it", shouldn't really be your job as a reporter to judge these people
How is that judging? I dont understand it either. What part of that is judging?
She’s not judging them. This is an addiction just like drugs just like alcohol.
If your reaction to not understanding someone is to judge them then there’s a problem with you. It’s perfectly fine to not understand something, it’s when you act on it then it’s bad.

Over 20 years I put all my disposable income, day in day out, to the tune of 700k into the pokies. Now, in retirement, I have no financial security. I'm now dependent on tax payers to fund my living.
